Fourth Annual Summer Sounds at St. James begins July 3
The Fourth Annual Summer Sounds series opens
on July 3 with a performance by the National
WWII Museum’s Victory Belles, a charming
vocal trio who delight audiences with their spirited
performances featuring dazzling costumes,
audience interaction, and World War II-era musical
classics, all sung in rich, three-part harmony.
The Hot Club of New Orleans will perform on
July 10. With guitars, violin, clarinet, and bass,
the Hot Club of New Orleans presents deft jazz
musicianship.

What is Happening? Happening is a youthled spiritual formation weekend designed
for high school teens. It is an amazing
experience that changes the way you think
about yourself and your faith.
Happening is open to 10th through 12th
grade teenagers of any denomination.
Happening is staffed by youth who
have attended Happening in the past,

as well as adult “moms” and “dads”. The
Youth Rector is Caitlin Walpole from
St. Augustine’s, Metairie, LA, the guest
musician is Sam Hensley from Roanoke,
VA, and the coordinator is Amelia Arthur.

Nursery Open on Sundays
Infants and toddlers are welcome
at all services, but also lovingly cared for
by trained staff in our nursery on the first
floor of the Parish Hall between 8:30 a.m.
and 12:30 p.m. on Sunday mornings, and
for other events as announced.

Stephen Ministry
Ministry Training Planned for this Fall
Might you feel called to the Stephen
Ministry? Stephen Ministers are lay people
who are trained to care for other lay people
in crises, and a training opportunity
will begin in the fall for those who are
interested in this ministry. At present, St.
James participates in the Stephen Ministry
along with St. Luke’s, Trinity, Holy Spirit,
and St. Margaret’s Episcopal churches. This
gives us the opportunity to be part of a
larger community caring for those in need.

Summer Sounds at St. James, cont’d.
On July 17, Donna Angelle and the
Zydeco Posse who have played blues
and heritage festivals throughout the
US and Europe entertain. The Zydeco
Posse features accordion, guitar, and
rubboard and is powered by the
French dance melodies, exuberant
Caribbean rhythms, and bluesy vocals
which are the hallmarks of zydeco.
Baritone Stephen Rushing, the first
place winner in the Man’s Solo Voice
Division of the National Federation
of Music Clubs Young Artist
Auditions, will present an all-English
program from the works of Henry
Purcell, G.F. Handel, Ralph
Vaughan Williams, Keith
Bissell, Donald Swann, Cole
Porter, and others.
Season tickets are available at $30 for any
four concerts, or $40 for all five concerts.
Friends of Summer Sounds sponsorship
is $75 and includes two (2) four-ticket
season packages, or $100 for two (2) fiveticket packages. Patrons of Summer Sounds
will receive four (4) four-ticket season
ticket packages for $150, or four (4) fiveticket packages for $200. Sponsorships
assist in long-term planning, and will be
individually acknowledged in the concert
programs. College students with valid ID
will be admitted free. Reservations are

of blues, Tex-Mex and Cajun

the Blues, is full of Louisianaflavored blues and roots style
material.

The St. James Columbarium is located adjacent to the Chapel of the Twelve Apostles
exterior wall within the quiet meditation garden (in between Bishops Hall and the Parish
Hall). It provides 251 recessed compartments (niches) for the placement of earthly remains
after cremation. Two internments are possible for each niche. Each niche is enclosed with
a protective granite face plate engraved with the appropriate name and the dates of birth
and death.

The columbarium is
former parishioners, and their immediate families.
The $1,100 fee per niche is a one-time charge. There will be no additional charge for
the polished brass inurnment urns with name identification plate, or the memorialized
granite face plate(s). A portion of the purchase price will be reserved for future care and
maintenance of the columbarium.
A certificate of purchase will be issued granting the exclusive right to use the niche. Rights
to a niche may not be sold or otherwise transferred, but may be returned to the parish.

Special Opportunities for Learning and Fellowship Abound
Trinity Wall Street supports Together Baton Rouge Community Wide Bible Study
A grant from Trinity Wall Street supports
the Together Baton Rouge Contextual
Bible Study program. By bringing together
people from differing denominational,
geographic,
economic
and
racial
backgrounds to study the Bible, organizers
hope to foster an appreciation and
understanding of others’ points of view,
said an article in The Advocate on May 18.
The point of contextual Bible study, a
concept borrowed from post-aparthied
South Africa, is to get people of different
backgrounds talking about Scripture
in context of both what the Bible
stories would have meant to those first
experiencing them and also how the words
and stories might apply to the contexts of
those studying them today, according
to Broderick Bagert. Baptists, Catholics,
Episcopalians and Methodists have worked
to develop the studies, and facilitators will
use questions to guide discussions, but
not force any interpretation. The groups
will meet once per month beginning this
month, and there are numerous day and
time choices throughout the week to
best meet your schedule. If you have not

Bad Girls Book Club
The next meeting of the Bad Girls
Book Club is Monday, July 22, and the
book selected is The Secret Keeper by
Kate Mortan. A review from Amazon
reads, “From the New York Times and
internationally bestselling author of The
Distant Hours, The Forgotten Garden,
and The House at Riverton comes a
spellbinding new novel filled with mystery,
thievery, murder, and enduring love.”
The Bad Girls will meet at the home of
Martha Richard, 6635 Seven Oaks Ave. at

please bring $5 to cover the cost of dinner.
Barbara will introduce the Progoff
Intensive Journal Workshop with an
overview of this method, which features
dialogues between the writer and a subject
to elicit new insights; the Daily Writing
discipline which might encompass Life
Writing, generating ideas for creative
expression, and Morning Pages as taught in
“The Artist’s Way;” and, Focused Spiritual
Writing — writing with a religious intent,
such as daily thanksgivings, turning points
in religious life, a spiritual biography or
dream journal, and praying the scriptures.
Sandra Smith will be leading an Ennegram
workshop on Friday, September 27,
and Saturday, September 28 from 9:00
a.m. to 4:30 p.m., each day. During this

• attentional patterns and world views of
the nine Enneagram personality types
• gifts and inner resources of each
personality type
• energetic habits of each type
• strategies for loosening automatic
patterns of perception and behavior
Those new to the Enneagram will gain
insights into what drives their behavior
and the internal stories that shape
their perceptions. Those who know
the Enneagram will learn more of its
complexities and the felt sense of type.
Journaling Workshop offered in July
Barbara Sims will lead this series on
Sunday evenings from 6:00-7:15 p.m. in
the Parish Hall Parlor on July 14, 21,
and 28. The series is free of charge, but
registration is requested, as a minimum
number of participants is required for the

This system can be a powerful tool for
personal, spiritual and professional
development as we learn ways to “unstick” ourselves from fixed and limiting
patterns of viewing ourselves and
others.
Miscommunication
lessens
when we become aware of how we filter
information. As we deepen our spiritual
awareness, we become less reactive and
more compassionate.
Exploring Personality in the Spiritual
Journey: Nine Panels of Types Speaking for Themselves
This workshop will be of particular
interest to therapists, coaches, spiritual
directors and those who manage others,
or work closely with others, as well as
those who want to grow in their intimate
relationships.
What is my greatest obstacle to my deepest
prayer? What stands between me and my
experience of the Divine? I do, of course.
Which begs the question, “Who am I?”... a
foundational theological question.
Register by September 14 and the cost of
$135 includes workshop materials, basic
beverages, and boxed lunches both Friday
and Saturday. After September 14, the

The Enneagram Personality System names
type-specific paths to a compassionate
heart, as well as the barriers that each
personality encounters on the journey to
wholeness. The power of the Enneagram
is that it names the fears that bind us and
identifies filters of perception that blind us
to the love and compassion present in each
moment.
Sandra Smith, M.Div., has been teaching
the Enneagram throughout the southeast
since 2002. She creates and leads workshops
and staff trainings using the Enneagram as
a map for deepening self understanding,
and facilitates type and study groups, and
works one-on-one with individuals as an
Enneagram workplace consultant and also
offers spiritual companioning.
