DIVINE SERVICE I
Christian Worship Supplement, p. 15
HYMN: #483, Lord of All Good
STAND
M: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
CONFESSION OF SINS
M: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our
Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.
C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have
disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and
failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in
eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I
pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.
M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the
atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his
authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of
the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
3
PRAYER AND PRAISE
M: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord.
GLORY TO GOD
Gloria in Excelsis

5
PRAYER OF THE DAY
M: The Lord be with you.
C: And also with you.
M: Let us pray.
O God, you reveal your mighty power chiefly in showing mercy and kindness. Grant us
the full measure of your grace, that we may obtain your promises and become
partakers of your heavenly glory; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives
and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C: Amen.

THE WORD
FIRST LESSON: Ecclesiastes 1:2, 2:18-26
“Meaningless! Meaningless!” says the Teacher. “Utterly meaningless! Everything is
meaningless.”
2:18 I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the
one who comes after me. 19 And who knows whether he will be a wise man or a fool? Yet he
will have control over all the work into which I have poured my effort and skill under the
sun. This too is meaningless. 20 So my heart began to despair over all my toilsome labor
under the sun. 21 For a man may do his work with wisdom, knowledge and skill, and then he
must leave all he owns to someone who has not worked for it. This too is meaningless and a
great misfortune. 22 What does a man get for all the toil and anxious striving with which he
labors under the sun? 23 All his days his work is pain and grief; even at night his mind does
not rest. This too is meaningless.
24 A man can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in his work.
This too, I see, is from the hand of God, 25 for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment? 26
To the man who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the
sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who
pleases God. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.
1:2
PSALM OF THE DAY: Psalm 34, p. 80 in the front of Christian Worship
(Congregation will sing the psalm together)
6
SECOND LESSON: Colossians 3:1-11
Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where
Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly
things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is
your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality,
impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of God
is coming. 7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8 But now you must rid
yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from
your lips. 9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10
and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its
Creator. 11 Here there is no Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian,
slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.
1
VERSE OF THE DAY: John 14:23
Alleluia! Jesus replied, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will
love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.” Alleluia!
STAND
GOSPEL: Luke 12:13-21
After the announcement of the Gospel, the congregation sings:
13 Someone
in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance
with me.”
14 Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?” 15 Then he
said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man’s life does not
consist in the abundance of his possessions.”
16 And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man produced a good
crop. 17 He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’
18 “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones,
and there I will store all my grain and my goods. 19 And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of
good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.” ’
7
“But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you.
Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’
21 “This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich
toward God.”
20
After the Reading of the Gospel, the congregation sings:
APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy
Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified,
died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from
the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the
Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.
Amen.

HYMN OF THE DAY: #484, Brothers, Sisters, Let Us Gladly
SERMON: Genesis 15:1-6
LORD, Give Me a Faith Like Abraham's
After this, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: “Do not be afraid, Abram. I
am your shield, your very great reward.”
2 But Abram said, “O Sovereign LORD, what can you give me since I remain childless and
the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?” 3 And Abram said, “You have
given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir.”
4 Then the word of the LORD came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son
coming from your own body will be your heir.” 5 He took him outside and said, “Look up at
the heavens and count the stars—if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So

LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will
be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us
our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into
temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and
the glory forever and ever. Amen.
