To become a Dynamic Catholic:
Compose your Prayer. Confessions. Receive the
Eucharist regularly. Volunteer to become a reader at
Mass or an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion.
Motivate your children to become altar servers or join
youth groups. Speak about God through good example.
Participate in a Catholic Bible study. Volunteer to
participate in some Church activities. Join one Church’s
numerous ministries that serve the poor, sick and
helpless.
Teen Conflict and relationship
You and the kids and the conflict can bring depth in
relationships! Another positive aspect of conflict is that it
helps a child learn how to stand up for him/herself.
First, find a way to agree with them in some way, while
holding your ground in regard to enforcing the rules.
Secondly, gently enforce consequences. "If I do that, I'll
lose my car for a month," or, "If I'm late now, my curfew
will be even earlier for a month."
Some parents haven't taken the time to set up and
communicate household rules and consequences, or
they just assume that their child knows where the line is
that they shouldn't cross.
All of this and more works but you MUSTspend Regular
Time Together. Listen. Lighten Up! Periodically review
the rules and pray together sometime every day.

The successful candidate in this position will have a strong working
knowledge of office practices and procedures. The candidate will
provide skilled secretarial and reception services for a large and
dynamic parish. Reporting to the business administrator, the ideal
person for this position must be able to multi-task, be self-motivated
and demonstrate discretion and sensitivity as the initial hospitality and
information contact for the parish community. Knowledge of the
Catholic faith and the ability to apply and express Christian values in
one’s work is essential.
Responsibilities:
Telephone and office reception, redirecting inquiries to proper areas
Providing clerical support to the priests and staff including typing,
photocopying and mail/email distribution
Publishing parish bulletins, forms, brochures and certificates
Maintenance of Sacramental records
Prepare Annual Reports of all Ministries for the Archdiocese
Maintenance of office supply inventory and office machines
Competencies:
An ability and willingness to support and affirm the work of the pastor,
administrator and pastoral ministries
Excellent telephone and communication skills
Familiarity with parish & diocesan policies and confidentiality
Strong knowledge of M/S Office programs, databases and data entry
proficiency
Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.

Master unruly activism by praying the Rosary
My dear people,
We live in a culture that seems to multi-task and always busy with constant activity.
Everyone is moving, doing various things, pulled in different directions, trying to do so many
things all at once. Multi-tasking seems to have become a way of life even in families and
institutions.
Our technologies, especially digital devices like cell phones and tablets are becoming more
than just tools that help us accomplish tasks and make our lives easier. It is changing the way
we think and the way we experience reality.
The question is: are we losing some of our attention span, our ability to concentrate? Are we
becoming more anxious about what to do with “downtime” and silence and the space
between messages and status “updates”?
The problem is older than the new technologies. In spiritual manuals of earlier generations, it
was called “activism”, a mentality that says that life is all about activities and “doing.”
All of us, I think, know the feeling of getting caught up and consumed by our activities, even
the good things we are doing to help other people and serve God.

The temptation is to use our work as an excuse and say we don’t have enough time to pray,
there is just too much to do. The danger is that we come to see time spent with God as time
wasted, time that is boring or not productive.

What we need is wholeness and integrity in our lives, a balance of work and prayer and rest
and recreation. We don’t need to reject technology or retreat from our responsibilities. But
we do need to make sure that we are keeping things in their proper perspective.

That’s how it is with our life if we are not rooted in prayer; in the natural everyday rhythms
of contemplation and conversation with God. No matter how tireless or generous we might
be in our service to others, no matter how much we are accomplishing for the Church in our
ministries, if our lives are not grounded in prayer, then we are not living the way God calls us
to live.
A life without prayer is never healthy and this is one of the reasons people “burn
out.”
Pope Francis cautions us against thinking that our Christian mission can be reduced to
activities, structures or programs. He calls “pastoral activism” an “ever-present danger.”
“What the Holy Spirit mobilizes is not an unruly activism, but above all … loving
attentiveness,” he writes in Evangelii Gaudium (“The Joy of the Gospel”).
Do you know that the Rosary is a contemplative prayer? We all need more contemplation in
our lives, more prayer. The Rosary is a perfect prayer for a time of activism. When we pray
the Rosary, our thoughts are turned with loving attention to Jesus, to the mysteries of his
life, to the face of God that he shows to us.
The Rosary opens our hearts to God’s plan, his loving will for our lives. This prayer teaches us
to listen and to watch as the Virgin Mary did for the signs of God’s purposes and work in our
daily lives. This prayer teaches us to trust God and seek to do his will in our lives again, as
Mary did. The more we reflect on the life of Jesus, the more we realize that everything he did
came from a deep place of prayer, from his loving dialogue with the Father. Big decisions,
important gestures and all were made after periods of intense and deliberate prayer.
With all the duties and pressures you face, pull out your Rosary when you come for your
weekly Eucharist and pray. Praying the Rosary before the weekend mass will calm you down
during the time of distraction and activism.

Masses will be said at 8:30 am and 7:00 pm. The
sheets for “The Names of the Faithful Departed” are
located at the entrance of the church. Write the names
of those you wish to remember who have passed away.
Sacraments & Ministries
BAPTISM: Do you have someone in your household under the age of 7 who requires baptism? The next Registration/Office visit date is
Mon., Nov. 28 – day and evening times available – you will need to bring the items listed in the baptism brochure (in brochure stand or on
parish website) to your appointment. Is your baby due to arrive early in the New Year? No need to wait until they are actually here to
attend the next Baptism Prep class which will be held over two Monday evenings on Nov. 7 & 14 from 7 -9pm. This is a requirement for
parents and godparents alike. (if you have taken it within the last 5 years there is no need to repeat unless you would like ‘a booster to your
faith’). Call Diane at 780-434-6313 ext. 233 to begin the process for baptism. Also, you may have a proxy to stand in for Godparents who are
not able to attend. Godparent choice is still the official one for duties therein and it is their name on the certificate and in the register. We
are to do our best to baptize our children as soon after birth as possible and also give them names with Christian sentiment.
CONFIRMATION 2016: The 200 young people (grade 7 and older) who will be confirmed in Nov. are busy preparing for this sacrament of
initiation. Catechism classes began in Sept. and occur each week through until Confirmation Sun., Nov. 13 . Archbishop Richard Smith will
celebrate two special Masses on Sun. Nov. 13. One is set for 3:00 pm and the other Mass is at 6:00 pm. Each confirmand has been assigned
to a particular Mass. Please keep these parishioners in your prayers.

MARRIAGE PREPARATION AT ST. THOMAS MORE will take place Mar. 17, 18 and 19, 2017. Registration closes Tues. Feb. 28. For details,

1st RECONCILIATION AND 1st HOLY COMMUNION: 1st Reconciliation and 1st Holy Communion are offered to children in grade 2. What

CALLED TO PROTECT TRAINING: is MANDATORY for all of our parish volunteers. The two-hour session provides participants with tools
to identify inappropriate behaviors, methods to report potential abuse, and best practices in ministering safely to the young and
vulnerable. These sessions are being presented by archdiocesan staff in individual parish locations. There will be a session held at St.
Thomas More Church on Wed. Nov. 23 from at 7-9:30 pm. If you have not attended one of these sessions then you are requested to

THE REMAND CHRISTMAS PROJECT IS BACK AND WE NEED YOUR HELP AGAIN! St. Thomas More Parish is once again asking all
parishioners to help them by donating chocolate bars (110 g) and picking up blank bookmarkers to decorate for our inmates at the Remand
Centre by Dec. 12th. Bookmarkers can be picked up by Monica’s office and Chocolate Bar drop off is also located there. We would greatly
appreciate your support!
SENIORS’ CHRISTMAS DINNER AND DANCE, jointly hosted by St. Thomas More Catholic Women’s League and Knights of Columbus Fr.
Bonner Council, will be held in the parish hall on Saturday, December 3, following the 5:00 pm Mass. Please save the date! Ticket sales will
begin in November.
KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS – FR. BONNER COUNCIL NO. 7599 is continuously recruiting members throughout Columbian Year 2016-2017. If you
are a Catholic gentleman but not yet a Knight, we invite you to join us to be the strong voice in support of the church, the family, culture of

ST. THOMAS MORE QUILT GROUP, “The Ties That Bind,” meet every Thursday, in the Choir room from 10am-2pm. New members are
welcome. Bring your own project and lunch if you plan to stay over the lunch hour.
GROCERY CARD PROGRAM: The St. Thomas More Parish Grocery Card Program welcomes more participation. Members of the Knights of
Columbus sell grocery cards before and after all Sunday morning Masses. They will also be selling grocery cards on the first and third
Saturday of each month before and after the 5:00 pm Mass.This is a great way to assist parish projects (i.e. upgrading the church lighting
and the cement entrance steps) and also to help the less fortunate. Please take the time to support the program on a regular basis.
THE ST. JOSEPH’S HOSPITAL AUXILIARY: is seeking donations of gently used Christmas decorations. Please leave your clearly marked
donations in the cloakroom of the church. If the item is very large and/or heavy, please contact Yvonne at 587-335-3484 to arrange drop
off. The last date for donating is Nov. 1.

ONE IN FIVE CHILDREN IN EDMONTON LIVE IN POVERTY. By providing a well-balanced lunch to children, E4C's (Edmonton City Centre
Church Cooperation) School Lunch Program is helping children to concentrate on their school work and not on their hunger. Please put
your donations in the lunch bags and drop them in the collection basket next weekend. Please make cheques payable to “Edmonton

PANCAKE BREAKFAST hosted by the Knights of Columbus, will be held Sun., Oct. 30, 9:30am - 12:00 noon in the parish hall. You and your
family are invited to enjoy pancakes with strawberries and whipped cream, sausages, scrambled eggs, coffee, tea, and juice. Cost is $5 per
person or $20 per family.
