KIMBERLY HIGH SCHOOL FAMILY
May 2016
NEWSLETTER
1
Washington Post’s America’s Most Challenging High Schools
http://apps.washingtonpost.com/local/highschoolchallenge/
It’s that time of year! In this lengthy newsletter you will find many points of pride and celebration, plans for
the end of the current school year, information about some exciting opportunities for students, and
information to prepare you for next school year.
We are truly proud of the accomplishments of our students in academics, the arts, clubs and organizations,
and athletics. Our successes are the result of student commitment, focused teachers, coaches, and
advisers, caring parents and a supportive community. Kimberly High School students and staff have been
given the resources needed to be successful and have strived to maximize these resources and our results
show the outcome of these efforts. Please take a few minutes to check-out the many success stories in our
newsletter.
Preparations for graduation and other end-of-year activities are also nearly complete. Graduation is June
1st at 7:00 p.m. Graduation information packets are in the mail and our senior class officers have been
working with us to finalize our graduation program. We look forward the excitement of graduation and the
post-graduation celebration party being planned by a team of KHS parents. Please be sure to review the
time schedules for the final few days of the school year.
We are in the process of completing scheduling for next fall and have been working to fill a number of
teaching positions necessitated by our projected enrollment increase of about 40 students. While we
continue to grow in enrollment I will repeatedly emphasize with staff members the importance of trying to
connect with all students at KHS. The goal is for every student to find a connection at KHS.
Planning for summer school and our wide-array of summer programming is well underway. Please be sure
to check with your son or daughter’s school counselor if you have summer school questions.
Finally, we are excited to move to full implementation of our Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program that
we have been gradually implementing the past few years. Basically, we are looking for every KHS student
to bring their own Chromebook or Laptop to school daily. We will be working with families who have
financial needs and our incoming students from JRG will be given their used Chromebooks in the fall. Over
75% of our teachers will be using instructional practice, like those at our middle school, that will require
regular, if not daily, use of the device. There is an overview of the program in this newsletter and more
information will be sent in the next few weeks.
Thank you for your support of education in our community.

A $5000 Herb Kohl Educational Foundation 2016 Excellence Scholarship was presented to
Keegan Downham at a recognition luncheon hosted by Herb Kohl.
The Herb Kohl Excellence Scholarship recognizes students who have demonstrated academic potential, outstanding leadership, citizenship, community service, integrity and other special talents.
The Herb Kohl Educational Foundation has been recognizing educational excellence annually
since 1990 to graduating high school students throughout Wisconsin. This year, Herb Kohl has
increased the scholarship amount from the previous $3,000 per scholar to $5,000. Since it was
established in 1990, the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation has awarded $10.2 million to Wisconsin students, teachers and schools.
AP Chemistry students competing in the United States National Chemistry Olympiad
(USNCO) 2016 advanced 6 qualifiers to take the National Exam! For perspective, in our region of
Northeast Wisconsin only 10 advance to take the National Exam and 6 of those are from Kimberly.
Congratulations to Matt Jacobson, Lindsay Heagle, Max Lom, Keegan Downham, Ethan Van Thiel
and Sidhanth Raman for making it this far. If they do well on the national exam, they will
become eligible to compete in the world championships and train this summer in Colorado for that
experience. Very exciting news and a first for Kimberly High School.

KHS Students participate in Congressional Art Competition
Each spring, a nation-wide high school arts competition is sponsored by the U.S. House of
Representatives as an opportunity to recognize and encourage the artistic talent of our nation's
youth. Since the Artistic Discovery competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school
students have participated.
The Artistic Discovery Contest is open to high school students in Wisconsin's 8th
Congressional District. Five students will be representing Kimberly High School, and will have
their work shown at the Neville Public Museum in Green Bay from April 23 rd- May 22nd. The
opening reception for this show will be on Sunday, April 24th at 1:00, where the winner for this
district will be announced. The winner of the local contest will be invited to a reception in
Washington, D.C. for the unveiling of their artwork, which will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol
for one year. This exhibit will include all of the nation-wide winning entries. Along with being
featured in the U.S. Capitol, students with the winning entries will also qualify for a scholarship.
The five students representing KHS were Mya Freund (senior), Kinley Hammatt (junior), Charlie
Biolo (junior), Hailey Buss (senior), and Shelbi Seefeldt (senior). Congratulations students!
This just in!!!!
Charlie Biolo takes 2nd place in the Congressional Art Show!
It's a very prestigious honor. The first place student of the
competition will have their artwork in Washington D.C. for a year,
and be flown out there for the ceremony for free with their parents!
This is the second year Charlie has had work in this show. Click on
the link to learn more about the art show.

NATIONAL HISTORY DAY 2016
National History Day (NHD) is an exciting academic enrichment program that helps students learn about
historical issues, ideas, people, and events. This yearlong academic adventure fosters students' enthusiasm
for learning and their love for history.
Students research a topic and create a project which goes through several levels of competition. Two JRG
and two KHS students advanced all the way to the state competition which took place in Madison on April
23, 2016.
Tatum Schwobe and Sydney Pittner (both KHS) created a website
about Nellie Bly, the trailblazing journalist and activist for change. Their
excellent project can be viewed at 80014826.nhd.weebly.com
Donovan Schultz, JRG, presented his
research with an outstanding documentary.
His project was about Jesse Owens, the four
times gold medalist at the 1936 Nazi
Olympics.
Emily Phillips, JRG, used her
considerable language skills to write a
historical paper about the women who fought in the Civil War. Who would
have known that there were about 400 of them?
Congratulations budding historians! You make the
KASD proud!

Nineteen students and two advisors attended the DECA ICDC (International Career
Development Conference ) in Nashville, Tennessee on April 22-28. It was a positive
experience for the entire Kimberly DECA Chapter!
The theme of the conference was "Be Epic" and that is what Kimberly DECA was. Danielle
Beyer earned a metal in her Marketing Cluster exam and her and her partner Emilie Dozer were
finalists in the Sports and Entertainment Promotion Plan.
The team of Charlie Fischer, Nate Tetzlaff, and Caleb Lacount were finalists in the Innovation
plan and finished in the top 10!
Nathan Endries, Travis Thyes, and Emma Peerenboom
attended the Thrive Leadership Academy, and Olivia
Thompson attended the Elevate Academy. The Kimberly
DECA Chapter will look to them to guide us through next year
with the new national slogan #OwnYour Future! Senior Brad
Gessler attended the Ignite Leadership Series where he
learned how to use his 4 years of DECA experiences at the
college level.
Three Kimberly High School students took first
place in the Welding Fabrication contest at the
SkillsUSA State Contest in Madison, WI on April
26th and 27th. The Welding Fabrication Contest
was a team event where three students were
expected to work together to fabricate a table at
Kimberly High School and bring it to the contest. The students were
expected to document the
fabrication and design process and present their table to a
judge in Madison. The students now qualify for the
SkillsUSA National contest in Louisville, Kentucky June
20th through the 24th. They're the only Welding
Fabrication team to advance to Nationals from Wisconsin.
Congratulations, Jacob Plach, Andrew Sandoz and
Hunter Mueller

The Washington Post has announced the America's Most Challenging
High Schools list for 2016 and for the 6th year in a row Kimberly High
School has made the list. Kimberly High School has ranked 22nd in the
State of Wisconsin and 1,310 in the Nation. Please view the link for information on this award and other schools who have made the list.
http://apps.washingtonpost.com/local/highschoolchallenge/
Jay Mathews, The Post’s education columnist who has been ranking America’s most
challenging schools for 18 years, writes, "The list reveals many schools that have decided
thinking and writing are as important as reading. With good teaching, they have found ways
to convince even the most laid-back, average students of the necessity and importance of
those subjects, too."
On Friday April 1st, 2016, Kimberly High School Teacher Cathy Krull
was recognized by WDTSEA for her 25 years of Service as a Driver's
Education Instructor. The award was presented at the 2016 WDTSEA
Spring Conference at the Chula Vista Resort in Wisconsin Dells. Cathy
has also been selected to serve as the Northeast Wisconsin Regional
Officer for the organization.
Josh Zimmers, a social studies teacher at Kimberly High School, is one of
16 educators in the country selected to participate in a National
Endowment for the Humanities summer seminar.
The National Endowment for the Humanities is an independent federal
agency that supports research and learning in history, literature,
philosophy and other areas of the humanities by funding selected,
peer-reviewed proposals from around the nation.
Kimberly High School psychology teacher Amy Ramponi was recently
announced as one of only three recipients of a national 2016 APA
TOPSS Charles T. Blair-Broeker Excellence in Teaching Award. The
APA TOPSS Charles T. Blair-Broeker Excellence in Teaching Awards
are given to outstanding high school psychology teachers recognized for
exemplary teaching, for advancing the science of psychology, and for
their commitment to academic and professional excellence.
This is a well-deserved award for Amy and the work she does at KHS to
support students and for her work with colleagues around the country in
advancing instruction in psychology.

Kimberly High School is going BYOD!
Starting next fall most courses at KHS will switch to the Bring Your
Own Device initiative. More details are on the horizon, but in the
meantime here’s what students and parents need to know:
1. KHS considers a device a chrome book or laptop.
2. KHS will release our recommendations for devices in the coming weeks.
3. BYOD necessitates students have a charged device ready every day.
4. Teachers have had ongoing training on making meaningful use of these devices regularly.
5. All courses will use an online learning platform to extend learning and communication beyond the
classroom and school day.

Frustrated with the congestion at Kimberly High School in the morning?
Please click on the link below to view the video put together by Fox Valley
Metro Police Department to help explain where part of the congestion
comes from. We know this is not the complete answer but if everyone
helps out and does their part to follow the traffic lanes it should eliminate
some of the congestion.
