Welcome Back!
I hope everyone had a blessed holiday, filled with lots of fun!
January is another important back-to-school period and a great time to recruit new PTA members. Our
January Membership Campaign, “New Year…New Opportunities” will help people who wants to start the new
year off with new opportunities to improve themselves, their lives and the world around them. Always remind
parents it is never too late to join the PTA and to make a real difference for our children. As you talk to
parents about joining the PTA also discuss the importance of parental involvement and the benefits to
students when more parents are involved.
Brag that we are the largest child advocacy association in the nation with more than 5 million members
networking and supporting all children. Go the National PTA website to explore the history of the PTA and our
involvement with the child labor laws, public health services and the improvement of school lunch programs.
Also, tell your parents about the “For Members” section which include a wealth of online resources, an
e-learning training program, even discounts from businesses like AARP, e-Trak, Hertz, Ifocus, RSC, MetLife,
Sharp, Staples and T-Mobile. No matter the reason, remember that students benefit from each and every
membership.
Since the PTA is largest parent organization, it is our responsibility to hold the election for the parent
representatives of the SBDM Council. Have questions? Want to know the best practices for the election? Need
to know how to set-up for the elections? Want to know why? Come out to the Training on Tuesday, January
14, 2014 at IAKSS Building, Conference Room C from 6 to 7:30pm. For more details, see the flier in the
newsletter.
Don’t forget about this month’s roundtable from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 16 at IAKSS in Conference Room
C. We will discuss how to write, call or visit your legislator and to show you how to find your legislators and
why it is important to contact them. As an extra incentive, we will give out prizes on who comes to the
meeting and knows who their legislators are. Last thing I would like to mention is the 10th annual
Children’s Advocacy Day. This year Thursday, Jan. 16 has been set aside in Frankfort. For additional
information about this exciting and important event, please read the article within the newsletter. Please try
to attend either event because advocating is the basis of the PTA.
If you need anything from the 16th District PTA, please contact us!
Have a great 2014!

Membership Corner
Many PTAs run only one membership campaign a year - in the fall. But those units that run more than one
campaign a year have, on average 20 percent more members! That’s because potential members have more
opportunities to say “yes” to become a member. Some facts:
* Nationwide, approximately 18 percent of PTA members join in January and February.
** Running membership campaigns more frequently reminds your members that membership is everyone’s
business especially if you weave membership into programs, activities and general PTA work too.
*** January is not too late for parents to make a real impact in the current school year. Plus, people who join
PTA in January will be ready to renew their membership the following school year.
The January PTA Membership Campaign theme, “New Year … New Opportunities,” plays on people’s optimism
that the New Year brings new opportunities to improve ourselves, our lives, and the world around us. For
parents, the world in which they want to make a difference is largely defined by children and schools.
Encourage parents to make it their number one resolution to be more involved in their children’s education.

2014 District PTA Scholarship application window is open
th
Applications are now being accepted for the 16 District PTA scholarships to outstanding senior students from Fayette County’s five
high schools to continue their education. Students from other academic programs can apply through his/her home school. The
th
objective of the 16 District scholarships is to give deserving young people the financial means to continue their education. The
scholarship is based on financial need, academic achievement and contribution to the community through extracurricular activities.
One scholarship is awarded to each of the five high schools within Fayette County. There is also a scholarship that is specific to
students with special needs. Applications and further details are available at http://bgcf.org/learn/how-to-receive/for-scholarshipth
seekers/ under 16 District PTA Scholarship or at www.fcps.net/pta. Deadline for submission is March 15. Historically, the award has
been $1,000 per scholarship.
Part of how these scholarships are funded is through contributions from our local PTAs. Please make sure to include a donation to the
scholarship fund in your spring budget. The more funds we raise, the larger the awards can be to our students. We are challenging
each PTA/PTSA to donate at least $50. This is a great way to support the mission and values of PTA!
Individuals are welcome to donate to the scholarship fund as well. It is easy to do, just visit http://bgcf.org/donate-now/ and choose
the William Ezzell PTA Scholarship fund. This is our endowed fund that pays for about two of the scholarships we award each year.
Past President John Price secured this donation!
Join the 16th District PTA as we march in the Martin Luther King Holiday Celebration on Monday, Jan. 20. We will meet as a
group in the ticket vestibule of Heritage Hall (entrance closest to Main Street Baptist Church) at 9:30 a.m. The parade begins at
10 a.m. Need additional information? Call Jaime Nebbitt 859-619-3949, the 16th District’s Diversity & Inclusion Chair.

UFEN Parents Learn to Make a Difference
Adrienne Thakur, 16th District PTA Recording Secretary, UFEN Core Team
On Nov. 21, the 16th District PTA concluded its inaugural session of the Urban Family
Engagement Network (UFEN) Training at the Northside branch of the Lexington Public Library.
Parents from elementary, middle and high schools attended nine weekly sessions and
learned how to understand specific ways to collaborate with schools to support their
children’s education ... and to address the barriers and issues that prevent urban parents and
families from being actively involved.
In feedback, UFEN Participants reported that they learned:
 About key Moments in Education History
 That every child has the right to an interpreter
 That there is a chain of command for solving school problems
 How to view their child’s comprehensive school file
 How students are classified as English Language Learners and that they can and should be
reclassified as mainstream when ready
 About the structure of the political system related to education
 How a bill becomes law in Kentucky and why it matters to education
 About different PTA programs such as Watch D.O.G.S. and All Pro Dads
 How to define a problem, to ask the right questions, narrow the focus and determine a goal for a
solution
Parents were also provided with resources to use and share at their schools, in their communities
and with other parents, including:
 A personal question-answer and discussion session with Superintendent, Dr. Tom Shelton;
 Meeting key players in Fayette County, including School Board Chair John Price; Vince Mattox,
FCPS’ Chief Officer of School, Community and Government Support; Andrea James, community
activist, SBDM member and former LFUCG councilwoman; and Kentucky PTA President Eddie
Squires
 Fayette County’s Parents’ Guide to Student Success
 The Missing Piece of the Proficiency Puzzle
 FCPS College and/or Career Ready Results
 School Council Proficiency
 Organizational Structure and Key Players
UFEN aims to train families in urban areas. To learn more, contact James Brown, 16th District
PTA Vice President and UFEN chair, at [email protected].
16th District PTA Roundtable
Our next Roundtable meeting will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 16
at “It’s About Kids” Support Services, 701 East Main Street.
At our roundtable meetings, you and all FCPS families have the opportunity to meet with
Superintendent Tom Shelton and other FCPS leaders.
Please consider joining in and learning more about what’s going on in our schools.
Children’s Advocacy Day at the Capitol
Children’s Advocacy Day at the Capitol
Children’s Advocacy Day at the Capitol began in 2004 as an effort to unite advocates from across the state
to raise their voices on behalf of children’s safety, health, education, and economic well-being. Hundreds of
advocates from more than 50 counties now gather in Frankfort every year to ask legislators to invest in our
children.
The 10th annual Children’s Advocacy Day is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 16. Last year, the
event brought close to 1,000 advocates to Frankfort to rally on children’s issues from the Blueprint for
Kentucky’s Children agenda. If you are interested in joining and being an advocate for children, please
check out the website at http://kyyouth.org/childrens-advocacy-day-at-the-capitol for more information
and registration.
Consider carpooling with other parents from your school. The more parents
who go, the more presence we will have and the more powerful we will be.

JA wants to bring more positive role models into our
schools. It’s FUN, EASY and REWARDING…
Junior
Achievement
WHAT IS JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT?

Junior Achievement is a non-profit organization that partners with volunteers from
the business community to empower young people to own their own economic
success.
Volunteers teach elementary students about financial literacy and their roles as
individuals, workers and consumers, and they prepare middle/high school students
for key economic and workforce issues they may face. All materials and curricula are
provided by Junior Achievement and developed specifically for each grade level.
WHAT WOULD I DO AS A VOLUNTEER?
Utilize JA’s FUN and EASY materials to talk to the students for about 15 minutes and then lead them in the handson activity for the remainder of the time. For K-5th grade classes, you visit the classroom five times for 30-45
minutes each. This is generally done once per week, but can be as flexible as you and your teacher want it to be.
The two of you decide on the time and day of the week. For 6 th-9th grades, you visit six times for 45 minutes each,
and for 10th-12th grades you will teach 7 lessons that last approximately 50-60 minutes. JA provides a one hour
training session that explains how to correspond with your teacher, what you do in the classroom & how the
teaching materials are set up.
WHAT PROGRAMS DOES JA HAVE?
