ACCENT HISTORY
Introduced in 1995 as the Excel replacement, the 4-door Accent sedan competed against the
Ford Aspire, Geo Metro, Toyota Tercel and other budget subcompacts. Three models went on
sale: L hatchback (the lowest-priced Accent), and base versions of both the hatchback and
the sedan. Accents used Hyundai’s 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine, rated at 92 horsepower. A
5-speed manual transmission was standard and 4-speed automatic optional on all models
except the L hatchback. Dual airbags were standard. Anti-lock brakes were optional on base
models, but not available on the L.
• In 1996, a sporty new GT was introduced with a more potent, 105-horsepower DOHC
engine. Unique GT features included a firmer suspension and performance tires on
14-inch alloy wheels, a tachometer, rear spoiler, fog lights, full cloth interior trim and a
stereo system with four speakers.
• Changes for 1997 were the trim level of GL being adopted for sedans, with hatchbacks
being called the GS.
• In 1998, the GT model, along with its 105-horsepower engine, was dropped. Other
changes included revised front and rear fascias, and new headlights.
• Accent was a carryover for 1999, with the major change being the elimination of the
previously optional anti-lock brakes.
• The second-generation Accent was introduced in 2000 with a sophisticated European
look and refinements.
• A significant facelift was done in 2003, with refinements in changes to the hood, front
fenders, bumper, grille, headlights, taillights and rear deck.
• In 2004, air-conditioning, which was standard on the GL, became an option.
• For 2005 the base 3-door trim was discontinued and the 3-door GL was only offered as
a GLS.
• In 2006, an all-new Accent was introduced with only a single model, the GLS 4-door
sedan. It was equipped with a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine, with continuously variable valve
timing, rated at 110 horsepower. Standard safety equipment included dual front airbags,
front side-impact airbags, roof-mounted side curtain airbags, plus standard Anti-lock
Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD).
In 2006, Accent was all-new and represented by only a single model, the GLS 4-door sedan.
Joining the 4-door for 2007 is a 3-door liftback in GS and SE trims.
The GS 3-door provides all of the standard 4-door safety features of dual front airbags,
front seat-mounted side-impact airbags, and front and rear side curtain airbags, plus liftback
convenience at a price point below the 4-door.
Equipped with the same 1.6-liter 110-horsepower engine and 5-speed manual transmission as
the 4-door, the GS 3-door also has a long list of options, including:

• Power heated mirrors
• Remote keyless entry with alarm and panic alert
• 172-watt AM/FM/CD audio system
The SE 3-door adds desirable standard items such as:
• Sport-tuned suspension with 24% stiffer front springs, 11% stiffer rear springs, stiffer
shock absorbers and a larger front stabilizer bar, resulting in a 70% increase in roll control
• Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD)
• 4-wheel disc brakes
• 16-inch alloy wheels with P205/45VR16 tires
• Fog lights
• Power heated bodycolor mirrors
• Bodycolor door handles
• Tinted glass with windshield shade band
• Rear windshield wiper
