In case you hadn’t looked at a calendar lately,
it’s MARCH. What’s the saying .. in like a lion
out like a lamb or vise versa .. well, I do believe
that Mother Nature is completely messed up
this year so who the heck knows what’s going to
hit us next.
Hopefully when you’re reading this bulletin, the
weather has straightened out a smidge. I’m
tired of the swing in temps; not only for
dressing purposes, but the floods around my
house are getting worse and worse .. Fifth Street River is flowing.
As a club we’re picking up steam with the last part of our Kin year. Nominations are this month; have you
thought about putting yourself out there and standing for an Executive position? There’s so much to gain by
committing that bit of extra time and effort. You will learn and enhance skills, spend more quality time with
your fellow Kinettes AND get to vote at an Executive meeting!! I do hope you all consider doing something
different and challenging for yourself this year. Past President Barb has included job descriptions further in
this bulletin. If you have any questions about any of the executive positions, please contact myself or
anyone that has held those positions in the past to help you make a decision. Let’s fill the slate and have an
awesome election night in April.
Zone conference is also upon us. I’m thrilled so many of us are attending. There’s a lot of fun attending
events outside of your club; they allow you to meet members of other clubs, members of the zone and
district executive, members reaching out to win your vote, and most importantly, to see that all of those
members are just like you .. and you could do it too. Grow, Learn, Make Friends, Have Fun AND .. take a look
at what could be your next step!
To all attending “Green Beer Day” I wish you all the fun you can handle .. enjoy your day!!! Kate and I will be
HOPEFULLY heading to the London Sugar Bush to check out the sap .. looking forward to that for sure.

February General was another great turnout. A big thank you goes to Life Members Gretta Gill and Kathy Jeffrey
who amused us with tales of Kinettes in an earlier time. DG Lisa got our minds going with her quiz and news from
Zone. Caterer Kathryn’s meal was delicious. And we never thought we would find anyone to replace our Tim! Well,
Kathryn is close.

Books on Wheels February delivery report from Barb and Debbie: Had a great night delivering books – only had 9 deliveries but the people were so thrilled – got
hugs, kisses, welcomed into homes because it was so cold out. They really appreciated it! One lady from Chartwell used to live in Kirkland Lake and they
were pretty active so she was glad to meet us. Only took about two hours from start to finish.

Rheo Thomspon Mint Smoothie Sales, Katie: All sold out! Thank you to Barb for being the top seller. Have given $400 to Debbie, all monies have been collected. If
we want to do this again we’ll have to make sure someone is in the area to pick the chocolates up.
Spring Convention, Monika: Finally received the signed contract on the 18th so the registration form and the Zone Conference blurb are complete and have been
forwarded out for circulation. Hopefully the registrations start flowing in quickly. I am also working with Lisa to have a meeting with Cranberry for some
items that need addressing. BS & BM have delivered letters to downtown businesses. If anyone can get any items for the silent auction for cystic fibrosis
that would be great.
KINdness Day, Cathie & Debbie: Friday morning – Kim is on chats, meeting at 9:30am to the Peak and Enterprise to give them a tray of nuts and candies. Lots
planned for Saturday, meet at 10am in front of Town Hall. There are a total of 95 items to hand out.
Diva, April: Planned for last weekend of April – April is going to contact the church ASAP.

Magic of Children request Katie: Emailed Lori and she understood our stance on why we didn’t want to go through with the ArtsVest application. She said that
they have improperly worded the advertising in the past.

Diva on a Dime, Spring Edition, April & Kim: Nothing is new
Spring Convention, Monika: Plans are still being worked on. It was a no-go with the hotel to use the William
Watts as our own hospitality suite, but I am still in discussion with them about an alternate option which
MAY see us not having to run the bar, but still getting some proceeds. It looks like a viable solution if
Cranberry will go for it. We still do not have any registrations, but that’s not surprising with Kin lol. SO
once I’ve gotten more confirmation from Cranberry we’ll know what we need committees for and a good
idea about woman power. In the meantime, is there someone that would like to take on the challenge of
finding a costume for our Governor to wear for the weekend, in the 1964 theme?

chocolates in Stratford when she was there for January Council Meeting saving about
$60 on shipping cost.
Description of Event: Rheo Thompson Chocolates offers a fundraising opportunity
for their mint chocolate smoothies. Note that it was a very easy project to complete –
minimum order is 200 chocolates. Sold chocolates for $2 each.

Very successful! All of a sudden we had sold out of our 200 chocolates (within a week
or so). The only recommendation would be that a member can pick up the chocolates
in Stratford as it is quite expensive to ship (if we do it again in the future). Kudos to
Barb McArthur for selling the most chocolates!

Committee Report–
Collingwood Kinettes celebrating National KINdness Day
The Collingwood Kinettes spread National KINdness Day over several days. It began on Thursday evening at our General Meeting. A poster was presented to Monika and Katie McKean with the request that they take the poster to
their work (Goodall Plant) the next day. This poster Said “Celebrating National KINdness day with the Collingwood
Kinettes”. The rest of the poster was covered with bags of candies for the employees to help themselves.
On Friday morning four Kinettes met at the local radio station, the Peak FM where they presented a candy/nut tray
to the staff. We then visited the local newspaper, the Enterprise Bulletin were they were also presented with a
candy/nut tray.
Saturday morning 8 Kinettes met downtown Collingwood in front of town hall. Starting here we placed 7 scarves
with notes attached to flag and light posts. The notes stated that the scarves were free as part of our KINdness day
celebration. We then walked around downtown handing out KINdness cards with attached hot chocolate packages,
toonies and lottery tickets to people passing by and we went into many stores wishes everyone a Happy National
KINdness day. Over 100 items were handed out. Candy/nut trays were also given to a couple of local businesses
that have supported our club in the past. These trays were also taken to the local fire department and on Monday to
the local OPP detachment.
Though our hands, cheeks and toes were cold from being outside, our hearts were warm as we gathered inside for a
lovely lunch after all our goodies were given out.

two bursary applications submitted.
It was our unanimous decision to forward Rebecca Field's application.
Rebecca is the daughter of a past Collingwood Kinsmen, Ted Field.
She is working toward a career in Pediatric Nursing or Pediatric Occupational Therapy.
We wish her all the best.

Two little old ladies, Doreen & Evelyn were sitting on a park bench outside the local town hall where a flower show
was in progress. The short one, Doreen, leaned over and said, 'Life is so boring. We never have any fun anymore. For
$10.00 I'd take my clothes off and streak through that stupid, boring flower show!'
'You're on!' said Evelyn, holding up a $10.00 bill.
So Doreen slowly fumbled her way out of her clothes and, completely naked, streaked (as fast as an old lady can)
through the front door of the flower show.
Waiting outside, her friend soon heard a huge commotion inside the hall, followed by> loud applause and shrill whistling. Finally, the smiling Doreen came through the exit door surrounded by a cheering, clapping crowd.
'What happened?' asked Evelyn.
'I won $1,000 as 1st prize for 'Best Dried Arrangement.. !

9 Facts You Probably Didn't Know About the
Winter Olympics
While not quite as popular as the Summer Olympics, there's something uniquely magical and special about
the Winter Olympics. Whether it's the idea of warming up while watching these
cold events, the fact that these athletes are flying down icy mountains and slopes
at breakneck speeds or the fact that there's actually a sport that mixes crosscountry skiing and shooting, the Winter Olympics are an exciting and special
time.
1. Two countries in the Top 10 for winter medals no longer exist
At the Winter Olympics, the top 10 medal winners overall includes both the Soviet Union and
East Germany. The USSR collected 194 Winter medals, making it third all
time, between 1952 and 1991. Meanwhile, East Germany's participation
only lasted from 1968 to 1988, but managed to win 110 total winter medals
during that time, placing them 10th overall.
2. There's a lot of money flowing
during the Winter Games
At around $51 billion, the Sochi games are
the most expensive ever, just barely edging out Beijing's $43 billion price
tag. But past games have also seen a lot of money moving around, and
sometimes the host city ends up coming out better than other times. While
Salt Lake City turned a $101 million profit for their 2002 games, Albertville went into the red by about $67 million. Calgary made somewhere
between $90 and 150 million from their '88 games, while Lake Placid ran
a $8.5 million deficit.
3. Only one athlete has won gold at both the Winter and Summer
Olympics
Only one person in the history of the Olympics has ever won gold medals at both the
Winter and Summer Olympic Games. At the 1920 Antwerp Summer Games, American Eddie Eagan won the light-heavyweight boxing gold. Years later, Eagan was a
member of America's gold medal-winning fourman bobsled team at the 1932 Lake Placid Winter Olympics.
4. Norway absolutely dominates the Winter Games
Norway is a straight-up powerhouse at the Winter Olympics. With 303
total medals and 107 golds (both all-time leaders), Norway has been a
perennial favorite — especially in cross-country skiing and speed skating, the country's two best sports. Not only that, but Norwegian crosscountry skier and biathlon participant. Bjorn Daehlie has won 12 winter medals (eight golds) in his career, making him the most decorated
Winter Olympic athlete ever. Plus, the country gets good bang for its
buck. Per capita, Norway has won one Winter Olympic medal for
every 16,556 residents. The United States, on the other hand, has one medal for every 1,237,154 residents.

5. The Winter Games are getting bigger
When the first Winter Games were held in 1924 in Chamonix,
France, 16 nations sent 258 participants to compete in six different sports. At this year's Winter Games in Sochi, 88 nations have
sent more than 2,800 participants to compete in 98 events in
seven sports.
6. 18 countries have just one athlete at the 2014 games
While countries like the United States, Canada and Russia have
sent many athletes to the games (230, 220 and 225 respectively),
18 nations have just one athlete representing them in Sochi. They are:
Zimbabwe, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Timor-Leste, Malta, Cayman Islands, Mexico, Venezuela, U.S. Virgin Islands, Nepal, Luxembourg, Bermuda,
Paraguay*, British Virgin Islands, Hong

7. The Olympic flame gets around
Commemorating the theft of fire from the
Greek god Zeus by Prometheus, the Olympic flame has always been a symbol of
Olympic competition, dating back to ancient Greece. It was reintroduced at the
1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam, and in 1936 the tradition of the torch
relay was first established.
The 2014 Winter Olympics torch relay lasted 123 days and included stops in the North Pole (for the first
time with the help of a nuclear-powered icebreaker), in outer space via Soyuz rocket, at the bottom of the
deepest freshwater lake in the world — Lake Baikal in Siberia — and the top of Europe's highest mountain,
Mount Elbrus.
8. "Gold" medals in Sochi actually contain 516 grams of silver
The last Olympic gold medals that were made entirely out of gold were
awarded in 1912. At this year's games, a gold medal contains 516 grams of
silver and a measly six grams of gold.
9. Canada is the all-time leader in curling
After being included in the inaugural
1924 Olympics, curling was taken out
of the games until a triumphant return
in 1998 in Nagano. And even though
everyone's talking about the Norwegian team, it's the Canadians you really
need to watch out for. In both men's and women's curling, Canada leads
the all-time medal count and both teams have won spots on the podium
in every Olympic games since Nagano.

This past spring I travelled throughout the Mediterranean Region for a
month. Shared with close friends, the sailing, food, accommodation, and tourist
haunts all provided new and exciting experiences. Sounds like the perfect trip.
Yet, at the end of our travels, I was left with a rather unsettled feeling.
Unlike Canada, the unrest and despondency was palpable in most ‘ports of
call’. In Athens, dark graffiti and clusters of disgruntled young people created
angst despite the magnificent historical structures. One could not help but compare the ruins of the Parthenon to the economic state of Greece today!
In Italy, the atmosphere in every town and city visited was sullen and, as with Athens, it was obvious the young people were idle. Close to fifty percent in the
twenty to thirty age brackets are unemployed in Italy. In Rome and the Vatican, it
was not just the rain that dampened our spirits! While basically polite, people
serving and ushering us were sullen and there was a general sense of ‘hurry up and
finish’. Even our visit to the Vatican museum and the Sistine Chapel more closely
resembled cattle being herded through a sales market. It was depressing to see
sales booths set up in front of magnificent ancient wall hangings, more like a carnie stroll so intense was the ‘grab’ for funds.
In Peniscola, Spain, a holiday resort town primarily for Spanish people, glum
faces reflected the impact of the country’s dire financial situation. During our
week in Peniscola we only saw one person smile! We had made him laugh. Barcelona reflected the same tone. Watching business men walking Barcelona’s downtown streets reminded me of the frenetic looks on men in suits leaving high stakes
gaming rooms in Vega at six in the morning. These despondent people were a
strange contrast to the brilliance and yet frivolity of Gaudi’s whimsical architectural creations spread throughout the city.
In Turkey, sharp comments by tour leaders outlined the unrest which boiled
over the day after we left Istanbul. Imagine, the protestors were demanding their
long standing democracy, of which they were proud, be upheld. Citizens were appalled that the government had started enacting laws which were religious based.
According to our guide and news reports Turkey is over 85% Muslim but 80% of
those Muslims are not strict adherents to their religion and their pride in democracy surpasses their religious dedicate. Democracy, which we Canadians take for
granted!

Perhaps we were sensitive to the situation in Southern Europe because we were
aware of the threats of bankruptcies and political unrest prior to our trip, but the
gloom still took us by surprise. Perhaps we were sensitive to the situation because
we are Canadians with an eye to the ‘health’ of the world, but the downward spiral
still took us by surprise. Perhaps we were sensitive to the situation because we are
Kin and recognize those in need, but the enormity of the situation still took us by
surprise.
As Canadians I think we sometimes forget our own good fortune. We tend to
criticize Canada for the perceived higher cost of living here. We forget to take into
account the higher cost of building, transportation, communications, heating, and
food due to our northerly clime and the immense size of our nation. We forget to
take into account our world renowned Health Care, Education, and Social Support
Systems which provide us with the opportunity to live full, independent lives.
We forget to be proud of what we have. Freedom, health, diversity, and prosperity
represent a mere few.
This is not to ignore the plight of many Canadians! However, our problems pale
in comparison to those of many other nations.
We should also be proud of our citizens who belong to a wide variety of service clubs across our broad nation; Citizens who work to better the communities in
which they live; Citizens who raise more service dollars per capita than any country
in the world, or so I have heard! With this ethic ingrained in our citizens, it is no
wonder our country is quick to respond to the needs of others. It is no wonder we
notice the needs of others at home and while travelling abroad. Just like Kin!
I am Proud to be Kin! I am Lucky to be Canadian!

KIN EDUCATION:
At our March General Meeting, we will be having our nominations for the different
club executive positions. Please review the list of executive position descriptions
and consider what position that you would like to run for. Please note that Secretary is both Corresponding and Recording. To add some fun to our election night,
we suggest that you bring bribes to the April General meeting to win our votes. Also,
you may place an ad in April’s club bulletin to campaign for votes. Any questions,
please ASK!
PAST PRESIDENT - to act as Kin Education officer, by-laws chair, nominating chair and
rules of order chair. As Kin Education officer, responsibilities include: run a new members’
school (as needed), inform nominees and executive elect as to their duties and provide
monthly education articles for the Club Bulletin.
PRESIDENT - shall be chief executive officer of the Club and shall preside at all General
and Executive meetings. The President shall act as liaison with Zone and District officials.
VICE-PRESIDENT - shall assist the president in over-seeing service and money raising
projects. In the event of two Vice-Presidents, they shall divide the service and money raising projects. The Vice President shall also be the Awards Chair. Duties as follows:
1. Shall review with each Active Kinette member, current award status and what to strive
for,
2. Shall encourage and assist with the creation and submission of all Club, Zone, District
and National Award entries, and
3. Shall ensure the completion and submission of club project reports in a timely manner.
RECORDING SECRETARY - shall draw up and keep on record, minutes of the Club meetings and of the executive meetings, and shall be responsible for the submission of minutes
to the Bulletin Editor by deadline stated.
CORRESPONDING SECRETARY – Shall be responsible for picking up the mail at the club
post office box in a timely manner. She shall forward a list of all incoming correspondence
to the President at minimum two days prior to the meeting at which it will be discussed.
She shall conduct all correspondence for the Club and keep a copy of all outgoing correspondence in the Secretary’s records. She shall also be the Kin Supply Officer and shall
take over the duties of the Recording Secretary in her absence. The Kin Supply Officer
shall keep an up-to-date record of Club Kin Supply materials in conjunction with the
President.

TREASURER – shall be responsible for the preparation and submission of budgets to the
Club and all Zone and District Officers, as requested. She shall receive and keep accurate
records of all monies due to the Club and deposit it in appropriate General and Service accounts, in the local bank. The executive shall have the right to expend up to $300 per motion, with the favourable majority vote of the executive, at an executive meeting. The
Treasurer shall have the books up-to-date and available for review at any time. To ensure
collection of dues, the Treasurer will make overdue reminder calls two weeks following due
date. A written reminder will be sent after first month if necessary. The Treasurer will submit a written statement for the Bulletin. The Treasurer will supply information to the Director of Membership regarding the status of dues, as necessary.
REGISTRAR - shall keep accurate records of attendance for club attendance purposes
and district records and remind members of missed meetings. She shall be responsible for
the update, ordering and distribution of annual attendance tabs in recognition of club attendance awards. She shall be responsible for arranging meals and collecting payment for
it from each member. The Registrar will supply information to the Director of Membership
regarding the status of attendance, as necessary.
BULLETIN EDITOR - shall make all arrangements for the compiling of the Club Bulletin
and shall arrange for a copy to be sent to each member, and District and Zone Officers, as
required.
DIRECTOR OF MEMBERSHIP – shall:
1. Assist in the development and implementation of a Club Membership Programme;
2. Be responsible for the maintenance and submission of all Membership Reporting Forms
(ie – change of address, new member registration, member transfer, membership proposal
forms);
3. Ensure membership proposal forms are filled out and publicized in the bulletin and
membership kits are ordered;
4. Support, promote and encourage all Zone, District and National Membership Programmes.

I just got back from our Midterm Meeting in Stratford this past weekend, and I’m all pumped
for the rest of our Kin year!
Zone Conference is just around the corner (March 23), and just a friendly reminder to get
those awards submissions in to me so we can own the podium at Spring Convention!
Don’t forget about Speak Off and Joke Off at our Conference – looking forward to hearing
one from each Club!
And most importantly, I am stepping down after my term, so please encourage members of
your club to submit their papers for Deputy Governor. It is a wonderful rewarding position,

Dear Kin member,
The "Outside of the Box" Committee was formed in the Summer of 2013 through an
application process, by a group of committed Kin wishing to look at opportunities
and options for District One Kin to be more fiscally responsible, clarify items
in our house rules, and also to assist in making participation in Kin outside
of the club more appealing.
Our members include Shane Walsh (past Deputy Governor, incoming District One
Membership Director), Bill Harris (Past DG, Past District Treasurer and current
District One CF / Service Director), Wendy Rolfe (Past Governor and past member
of multiple District Executives, current District One Coordinator), Debbie Ruffley
(current Deputy Governor, past member of multiple executives), and co-chaired
by Terri Iredale (Past Governor, past member of multiple District Executives,
currently District One Communications / Risk Manager and Past Governor) and Monika
McKean (Past Governor, past member of multiple District Executives and Life Member).
These members all bring different views and opinions to the table, and during
the course of our communication throughout this year, we have struck upon a few
items that we feel are important to look at for continual improvement for our
District. This is "part one" of our presentation to the members of District One.
We have a number of other areas we are reviewing and that will be coming forward
in the future.

Our goal is to be able to tabulate the information and bring forward some positive

in Spring Convention business.

The National Risk Management Committee is once again looking for a new member
to join our team. This position will take effect as of the May face to face meeting.
As a member of the National Risk Management Committee (NRMC) you will be:
- Asked to complete a three year term
- Participant in conference calls as required
- Participate in a face to face meeting every spring at Kin HQ. This years meeting
will take place May 30th & 31st. Expenses are paid as per the National budget.
- Responsible for the research and education of Risk Management issues related
to the Association.
- The liaison between the National Risk Management Coordinator, the DG's, the
DRM's and the club members.
Our Goal is simply, MINIMIZE THE RISKS, PROTECT THOSE AROUND US.
