The Schaulager ('viewing warehouse') is neither museum nor
traditional warehouse. It keeps the Emanuel Hoffmann collection
in optimal condition and is primarily accessible for specialists:
conservators, curators, researchers etc. The heavy outer wall is
built up in layers and its outer surface scratched, exposing the
pebbles excavated on site. This material is not only a visual
expression of weight and storage but also, as a result of its great
inertia, an essential factor in the interior climate control. On one
side the box is somewhat indented, creating a forecourt, so that
the entrance side is visible from great distance. It appears to be
guarded by a small building with a gabled roof. The courtyard-like
space radiates urbanism and publicness. Schaulager is thus not
simply an anonymous box on the urban periphery, but rather a
place that is active and self-confident, expanding the public
dimension of the city of Basel to the south, towards the new
district of Dreispitz/Münchenstein.

REHAB Basel
Address
Im Burgfelderhof 40
4056 Basel
Switzerland
http://www.rehab.ch
.
You expect clinics to look, well, clinical, modernist, austerely
immaculate boxes, hygienically white inside and out. REHAB
Basel is a privately run rehabilitation clinic for patients with
spinal-cord or brain injuries, they can stay here up to 18 months.
It appears residential and natural, though not with a funky,
down-home earthiness, but crispy modern. Here, oak, pine,
larch, and ironwoods enclose and screen exterior walls, and a
rectilinear plan brings daylight and landscape into its precincts
through courtyards, grassy roofs, glazed walls, upper-level decks,
and skylights. The double and single rooms have daylight from
above and an outside balcony. The indoor swimming pool offers
views into the sky from a pyramid-like dome above. The floors
are very wide, open giving wheelchair-bound patients a sense of
autonomy. Almost a place where anyone would like to live.

Institute for Hospital
Pharmaceuticals
Address
Spitalstrasse 28
4056 Basel
Switzerland
.
The Hospital Pharmacie (in German: Institut für Spitalpharmazie)
houses offices, labs and production. The building is placed on the
Rossetti-grounds, and presents itself to the street with a green
monumental shield. The building marks the entrance to the city,
from the Spital-side. The position of the elevator, stairs and
entrance side for services was determined by the existing building
from the 1960’s. The façade is made with glass, covered by a
Chromogenic colour print. If you come close, you can see the
structure of the print on the green, semi transparent building
surface.

Four strikingly different structures are grouped around a
courtyard. The 1950's building houses the industrial trade school
and the Hochschule für Kunst und Gestaltung (College of Art and
Design). Also noteworthy are Hans Arps stele in the courtyard,
and the stepped pyramid the steps form seats by Armin Hofmann.

Apartment building
Address
Schutzenmattstrasse 11
4051 Basel
Switzerland
.
Sinuous cast-iron screens are used in the façade of this
apartment building. They resemble drain grilles. This inventive
use of unexpected but ordinary and readily available things is
typical for the work of Herzog and De Meuron. "Something
mysterious is revealed in the normality of everyday life".

St. Antonius Church
Address
Kannenfeldstrasse 33
4056 Basel
Switzerland
.
Architect Karl Moser envisioned a structure that stood flush with
the street's building line, with unpainted walls and large
stained-glass windows that would fill the interior with light
transformed into a maze of colour. The church is built entirely of
in-situ reinforced concrete and its plan is a simple rectangle of
remarkable size: 60 metres by 22 metres; the height also being 22
metres. The dimly lit, tunnel-like entrance area is a cleverly
staged introit to the church's long, bright interior. Eight
remarkably slim concrete columns carry a barrel-vault over the
nave and a flat roof over the aisles, both of them coffered on
structural and acoustic grounds. The choir is flat, closed off, and
over-furnished; the mosaic cross put up later by Hans Stocker also
seems out of scale. The opposite side, with the soloists podium
and mighty organ, has a grid of fine concrete ribs.

Switzerland

.
Jean Tinguely (1925-1991) grew up in Basel and belonged to the
Parisian avant-garde in the 1950s and 60s. He stimulated and
revolutionized the "static" art world with his kinetic works. The
Museum's permanent collections present a selection of the artist's
machine sculptures, reliefs and drawings from all the periods of
his career. The Museum also offers a varied and lively programme
of temporary shows devoted to Tinguely's fellow artists and
contemporaries - Bernhard Luginbühl, Niki de Saint Phalle and
Yves Klein - and to his models such as Marcel Duchamp and Kurt
Schwitters, as well as to related subjects such as contemporary
kinetic art.

Bank BIS
Address
Aeschenplatz 1
4051 Basel
Switzerland
http://www.bis.org/about/buildings.htm
.
This building sits on the edge of the downtown in Basel, about
halfway between the train station and the river. Botta's design
for the UBS bank (now the BIS bank) is his largest north of the
Alps. The powerful half-circle design is used often in his projects
as well as the alternating bands of light and dark stone. It's
presence dominates the Aeschenplatz, yet it's symmetry and
curving facade fit perfectly into the site.

Offices designed and built between 2003 and 2004. The overall
glass façade has a distinct dented appearance. Horizontal
protruding bands of black aluminium cladding emphasizing the
floor slabs add to the twisted feel of the façade, while the
vertical perforated black elements act as natural ventilation in
front of the slender opaque windows.

Address
Walkeweg 55

Train depot and service workshops housed in a 240 m long
concrete building. Elongated light prisms placed rhythmically
along the roof (covered with plants originally found along railway
tracks) bring light into spacious working halls. Includes
administration wing with a restaurant on top floor. Together with
the nearby switching tower, this complex has improved greatly
the urban quality of the industrial area in the south-east part of
Basel.

The new Children's Hospital draws attention because of its
colourful façade that changes appearance depending on one's
viewpoint. This is possible because its glass panels are covered in
layers of foil, which reflect light in different ways. Punctuating
the street façades are mesh-protected loggias that allow children
to play "outside". All the patient rooms face a park-like
courtyard; along the windows they have built-in benches that can
be turned into beds for parents. Hallways are wide and bright,
their walls are covered in wood-like panels, tall slivers of back-lit
photos depict scenes from Basel and include child-scaled
figurines.

Volkshaus Brasserie & Bar
Address
Rebgasse 12
4058 Basel
Switzerland
http://volkshaus-basel.ch
.
This is the first phase of a long-term renovation project of the
1925 "Volkshaus" building - in addition to the existing concert hall
and beer garden, later on a hotel, a shop and a library are also to
be reinstated. In the renovation of the bar and the brasserie,
H&dM have removed all the unnecessary interventions from the
1970s, thus bringing back the original architectural character. All
the new elements refer to the original - e.g., oval windows or
light fixtures, chairs and table tops. Materials used include wood,
leather and tin. Wallpaper recreating 17th c. Basel as depicted by
M. Merian cover the restroom walls thus alluding to the
centuries-old history of the "Volkshaus" predecessors.

The new hall for the Messe Basel includes 50 000 square meters
of exhibition space that spreads across two windowless floors,
each 8 meters high. This large volume is clad into a shimmering
facade of interwoven metal strips, with each of floors slightly
offset. The ground floor, enclosed in glass, is designed for public
use and is shaped so as to form a "city lounge" - a covered plaza
that opens to the sky through a large, mesmerizing oculus.
