César Chávez: A Movie
About a Cause and a Legend
By Katharine A. Díaz
Labor leader César E. Chávez
passed away in 1993 after a life's
work of fighting for farmworkers'
rights. Not only is César Chávez
Day commemorated in several
states and the César E. Chávez
National Monument stands in his
honor, now there comes a film
about this legendary activist, César
Chávez, scheduled to hit movie
screens on March 28.
Directed by Diego Luna, actor
(Y tu mama también and Milk),
director and producer (The Well),
the movie stars Michael Peña
(Walkout and American Hustle) in
the leading role as Chávez; America
Ferrera (Real Women Have Curves,
Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants
and TV's Ugly Betty) as Helen
Chávez, the leader's wife; and
Rosario Dawson (Alexander, Rent
and Men in Black II) as Dolores
Huerta, who co-founded the United
Farm Workers union (UFW).
Filmmakers focused on crucial
periods of his life during the
1960's that included the Delano
march, the grape boycott, his first
hunger strike and the coming to the
bargaining table with landowners.
Peña brings those moments to life
with a sensitive portrayal of the
labor leader that allows us to feel
the personal sacrifices he made in
his life. Peña shows us that Chávez
had a quiet resolve and respect for
all, even the bad-guy growers.
He also brings to life less-known
incidences in the labor leader's
fight. One such episode takes place
during the grape boycott when
Chávez travels to Europe to gain
support for his cause and to block
grape shipments sanctioned by the
U.S. government intended for the
European market. The scene in
which he empties crate after crate
of grapes off a bridge is all about
sweet victory.
Dolores Huerta, as portrayed
by Dawson, is ever present. Her
important role in the struggle
may not be clearly defined in the
movie, but it's clear that she was
by Chávez's side every step of the
way. Dawson captures her inner
strength.
Ferrera's portrayal of Chávez's
wife gives us more insights into
Chávez's character. Through her we
see how he struggled to be a good
husband and father and understand
how his struggles were hers too.
Actual footage and news clips of
the time are seamlessly woven into
the movie. Even when paired with
the scenery, costuming, props, and
casting from the film production,
you believe you are back in the
Channel Islands wins national
Collegiate Advertising Award
CSU Channel Islands (CI) recently
earned top national honors from the
Collegiate Advertising Awards for
its “Together We Innovate – Join
Us” advertising campaign. The
Collegiate Advertising Awards
(CAA) is an elite national program
recognizing colleges and universities
for excellence in communications,
marketing, advertising, and
promotions of their schools.
CI garnered a Gold Award,
a
placing it in the top 5 percent
out of 800 entries submitted by
higher education institutions in the
U.S. and Canada. CAA’s expert
panel of design and education
marketing professionals judged
entries based on creativity, layout
and design, functionality, message
effectiveness, production quality,
and overall appeal. Participants’
entries competed against similar
sized organizations in their specific
groups and categories. Only the top
16 percent of entries earned awards,
ranging from the highest – Judge’s
Choice – to the lowest – Bronze.
“Under the leadership of President
Rush, the staff and faculty at
Channel Islands are constantly
challenged to innovate and be
the best at what we do,” stated A.
Michael Berman, Vice President for
Technology & Communication. “I'm
very proud that our Communication

long march to Delano.
1960's.
Yet, the biggest sigh of relief
comes not from the moment that
news breaks that growers are
willing to meet with the UFW, but
for a production that is respectful
of the great labor leader. That
said, this dramatic biopic of one
great Latino leader reinforces the
urgency for many more. We need
to all get out and support this movie
because with its success there will
be more. And perhaps the next one
will be about Dolores Huerta, who
continues the good fight.
& Marketing team can add this
recognition to the dozens of awards
received across the campus in our
short history."
The “Together We Innovate –
Join Us” campaign launched in
February 2013, with a blitz of more
than 100 ads in over a dozen media
outlets, including newspapers,
magazines, business publications,
online display ads, search engines,
social media sites, direct mail, as
well as University publications.
The campaign highlights the
University’s stellar accomplishments
and unique student-centered
atmosphere through an inspiring
array of ads featuring the photos and
stories of real CI students, alumni,
faculty and staff. It also makes a
compelling appeal to prospective
students, donors, and community
partners to join in the innovation and
advancement that the 12-year-old
institution is bringing to the region.

“We’ve been thrilled by the
enthusiastic response to the
campaign,” said Nancy Covarrubias

between our University and the

of the moral and social impetus’
for legalization, there is also a
clear economic case for a pathway
to citizenship. Ultimately, this
research adds further evidence to
the breadth of analyses finding
that enforcement-only policies
are economically, socially, and
morally ruinous.
Increasing deportations have the largest negative effect on employment opportunities for natives.

President subsequently ordered
a review of immigration policies
“to determine ways to make it
more humane,” the Washington
Post reported. Gutierrez later
remarked, “It is clear that the pleas

work with him to keep families
together.”
Amid concerns over a mounting

increasing number of deportations
also has economic ramifications.
A new study from the National
Bureau of Economic Research, by
economists Andri Chassamboulli
and Giovanni Peri, explores the
labor market effects of reducing
undocumented immigrants. They
find that an increase in deportation
results in a negative effect on
employment opportunities and
wages for native-born workers,
while legalization of the
undocumented would produce
positive labor market effects for
the native-born.
The major question the paper

name statement generally expires at
the end of five years from the date on
which it was filed in the office of the
the least costly way for U.S.
firms and workers?” With that
question in mind, the paper
analyzes four policy scenarios:
“reducing the opportunities of
illegal immigration (more border
enforcement), increasing the
costs that undocumented face
in looking for a job (hostile
environment, no access to any
social benefits), increasing the
frequency of deportations and,
finally, increasing legalization
rates.” As the report notes, each
of these policy proposals would
have different effects on the
economy, including effects on
employment opportunities for
native-born workers and jobcreation by U.S. firms. What the
findings show is that policies
increasing deportation rates
have a large negative effect on
native-born workers’ employment
opportunities, but legalization
could lead to higher wages and
a lower unemployment rate for
native-born workers.

César Chávez, el héroe
que necesita un doble
Desde estas líneas hemos
ensalzado antes la figura de este
defensor de los derechos de los
trabajadores que necesita un
imitador con urgencia: César
Chávez.
Si a esta altura del camino usted
no sabe quién es César Chávez,
está metido en una burbuja,
porque entre otras cosas, Diego
Luna tuvo la buena idea de hacer
una película sobre él que está por
estrenarse.
impulsan, y vuelven a impulsar
y siguen impulsando la reforma
migratoria a punta de marchas y
ayunos.
Hay líderes imprescindibles
en las comunidades y en las
pequeñas localidades, hay líderes
comunitarios que trabajan día
a día en las organizaciones
no gubernamentales que
cumplen infinidad de funciones
fundamentales.
Pero no tenemos un César
Chávez. No tenemos un César
Chávez y lo necesitamos con
urgencia. Necesitamos un líder
que tenga su misma determinación
para pelear por la libertad y
la dignidad de los millones de
inmigrantes que hoy no la tienen
en Estados Unidos.
Porque no hay libertad cuando
las familias son separadas, cuando
hombres trabajadores y honestos

1998.
Uno de los valores más
destacables del autor de "El
laberinto de la soledad" era la
pluralidad, que no haya "una
idea única y central", sino "una
diversidad armónica, no una
verdad, sino varias versiones de
la realidad, no un monólogo, sino
una conversación", añadió.
En el acto estuvieron presentes
representantes de las embajadas
de los tres países que marcaron la
vida del único nobel de literatura
mexicano.
España, donde participó
en un congreso de escritores
antifascistas en plena Guerra
Civil; La India, un país que amaba
y donde fue embajador hasta que
dimitió en rechazo a la matanza
estudiantil del 2 de octubre de
1968; y Francia, donde estrechó
lazos con intelectuales de los dos
grandes movimientos culturales
de la época: el surrealismo y el
existencialismo.
La sesión solemne es fruto de
la comisión especial encargada
de organizar las actividades
conmemorativas del centenario,
integrada por siete diputados, uno
de cada grupo parlamentario, y
presidida por Sonia Rincón, del
partido Nueva Alianza.

PERIÓDICO VIDA 03-27-14
En su intervención, Rincón
definió a Paz como "el mexicano
más universal", "el hombre de
letras que profundizó en el ser de
un país trágico y generoso, que
exploró salidas en ese laberinto del
aislamiento y la incomunicación
para proyectarlo al mundo".
" D u r a n t e m u c h o s a ñ o s ,
políticos e intelectuales que
se sintieron exhibidos en sus
dogmas y privilegios por la
crítica del maestro Paz intentaron
minimizar su obra o distorsionar
su pensamiento", indicó.
"Las etiquetas que le pusieron,
como ser el intelectual de la
derecha o el defensor del régimen,
han caído con el peso de la
historia", añadió.
Por su parte, el vicepresidente
de la Cámara baja, José González
Morfín, dijo que Paz "se convirtió
en protagonista intelectual del
devenir histórico del país en
el siglo XX" y "presenció su
transformación profunda de
nación rural a urbana".

Benito Bodoque y Cucho, ambos
miembros de la pandilla de Don
Gato, entre muchos otros.
E
los años 70, Arvizu logró el
reconocimiento de su personaje "el
Tata", de la comedia "La criada bien
criada", y con ese sobrenombre que
mantuvo hasta su muerte participó
en numerosos programas de
televisión de la cadena Televisa.
En
sus últimos años de vida, Arvizu
participó activamente en las dos
campañas del izquierdista Andrés
Manuel López Obrador por la
Presidencia mexicana, incluso
con la difusión de mensajes de
propaganda política.
El actor fue
también productor y escritor de
teatro, televisión y cine.

de México Arvizu interpretó a

Una mujer celosa le pregunta a
su marido:
- ¿Con cuántas mujeres has
dormido?
Él responde:
- ¡Contigo nada más! Con las otras
no me da sueño.
identificación personales a manos
Unidos.
Además de presentar su caso
ante el público, para evitar que
otros sufran el mismo engaño,
los estafados pidieron que el
presidente Barack Obama utilice

y autos policiales.
Apegados a
las tradiciones de este pueblo,
los labriegos cargaron sobre sus
hombros los féretros con los restos
de las dos mujeres, desde la entrada
del pueblo hasta la casa de los
familiares donde se llevan a cabo
los servicios funerarios.
"Nosotros
estamos aquí para recibir a nuestras
mujeres porque hoy son ellas,
mañana pueden ser nuestros hijos
que viven allá, del otro lado (en
Estados Unidos)", afirmó Felipe
Lino, vecino de la comunidad.
Para
Ramiro Vázquez, "el precio de
querer vivir mejor, a veces, se paga
con la muerte", pues la pobreza les
obliga a abandonar sus cultivos
y buscar nuevas oportunidades
atraer a posibles víctimas y/o
clientela.

No

comunidades no latinas acepten
ser representadas por políticos
latinos”.
