Judi Quilici, owner of Giardini Gift, Garden and
Home, said visitors will receive an empty bag and a program that lists activities in Proctor District that evening.
Businesses will have neon pink boards out on the sidewalks to indicate they are participating in the event.
Retail shops will offer discounts on products, while
restaurants will offer special menu items or regular items
at special prices. The amount that will go to BCRC will
be listed in the program.
A DJ will be on a sidewalk playing music as people
stroll through Proctor District. All other activities will
take place inside businesses. A roaming fashion show
will meander through the businesses, with models
wearing clothing available in the shops or displaying
artwork.

“We want people to visit several restaurants and many
retail businesses,” Quilici remarked. “We want everyone to visit as many as they can.”
Quilici pointed out that the majority of funds raised
will go directly to client services at BCRC. The majority of those clients live in Pierce County.
Everyone who buys a ticket will receive a neon pink
necklace and a brass pin with pink enamel in the shape
of a bra, the symbol of Breast Cancer Resource Center.
Last year 525 tickets were sold. Quilici is optimistic
more will be sold this year.
She is proud of the way her fellow entrepreneurs in
Proctor District support the event. “These are tough
times, but everybody has stepped up to do their part,”
she said. “In turn, I hope people will turn out to support

Mandolin Café celebrates
Wine, Women and Song
Yearly mammograms are
recommended starting at age
40 and continuing for as long as
a woman is in good health.
Breast exams by your doctor or
nurse should be part of a health
exam about every three years for
women in their 20s and 30s and
every year for women 40 and older.
Women should know how their
breasts normally look and feel
and report any breast change
promptly to their doctor or
nurse. Breast self-exam is an
option for women starting in their 20s.
Some women − because of their family history, a genetic
tendency, or certain other factors − may need to be
tested with MRI in addition to mammograms. (The
number of women who fall into this category is small −
less than 2 percent of all the women in the United
States. ) Talk with your doctor about your history and
whether you should have an MRI. For more information
about increased risk, please call 1-800-ACS-2345.
To help support Tacoma’s own Breast Cancer Resource Center
(BCRC), the Mandolin Café will be hosting a fundraising event
called “Wine, Women
& Song” on June 19
from 4-8 p.m. Tickets
are $20, and entitle the
holder to a night of winetastings, music and
raffle prizes. Sagelands
Vineyard of Wapato,
Wash., will be the featured winery that night,
the café. The Collective will play live music. Everyone who buys
a ticket will be automatically entered in the
raffle that will feature,
among other prizes,

Ancient Chinese tradition helps cancer survivors recover
By Jill Russell
A local nonprofit is looking to use
a 3,000-year-old Chinese tradition to
help raise awareness about breast cancer and help those surviving cancer to
heal.
The Tacoma Dragon Boat Association (TDBA) is a hodge-podge of
people from around the region who
join together year round to paddle traditional Chinese dragon boats. Members of the group range in age from 18
to over 80 and paddle for recreation
and/or competition. Their motto is
“fun, fitness, and fellowship for people who love being outdoors.”
TDBA is the home of the Destiny
Dragons, named for the moniker by
which Tacoma has been known for
more than 80 years, the City of Destiny. The group welcomes new members at anytime and from a wide range
of professions. The dragon boats are
moored at Johnny’s Dock Restaurant
and Marina in Tacoma’s Thea Foss
Waterway.
TDBA held its first paddling practice for breast cancer survivors on
April 17 and eight women attended
the practice. The team will host practices every Sunday for women cancer
survivors.
“It’s a wonderful sport,” team
member Phyllis Bales said. “One

A positive self-image is key to cancer recovery…
BCRC celebrates completion of elegant Resource Room
A
sk anyone on staff at
the Breast Cancer Resource Center (BCRC)
what is new these days at BCRC
and they will no doubt say with a
big smile, “the Resource Room.”
Thanks to a number of caring
people who donated their time
and considerable talents, BCRC
now has an exquisitely furnished
and decorated Resource Room
where cancer survivors can go
to choose and be fitted for wigs,
prostheses, post-surgery camisoles and bras. Everything a
woman would need after having
a mastectomy or lumpectomy
she will find at BCRC’s Resource
Room – all at no charge.
Since upon opening in 1998,
BCRC has had a Resource Room
but it needed a lot of upgrades
to make it fully functional and
comfortable for both staff and
clients. “It was just a hodgepodge room,” explained Executive Director Marsha Robbins.
“And it was hard to serve people
because of the way it was set up.
We wanted a place that is nurturing, where people can sit and
relax after all the tension in doctors’ offices and all the waiting
rooms. We wanted something as
far removed from that as could
be.”
A sizeable grant from the Charis Fund got the ball rolling on
giving the room the extreme
makeover it needed so badly.
Then came the help of some
good people: interior decorator
Kathy McDonald, who stuck
with the project for two years;
Kathy Swan, president of Carpenters Union Local 470; and
Chris Winters of Painters and
Allied Trades Local 1964 all
rounded up help and pitched in
to create a room that was obviously built by professionals who
put lots of tender loving care into
their work. It took two years to
complete, and now the Resource
Room is open for the business
of bringing beauty back into the
lives of women who are surviving cancer.

Critical Illness Cash
Plan
Puttin’ on the Pink
A heart attack doesn’t have to be
financially devastating, if you’re prepared.
Every 34 seconds someone in the United States suffers a heart attack.* Are you financially prepared
if it’s you? A heart attack, stroke, cancer, or other serious illness often comes without warning.
The Critical Illness Cash Plan is insurance that helps protect you, your family, and your assets from
unexpected expenses.
If you or a member of your family is diagnosed with a critical illness, you or your designee will receive a
cash payment to use however you want. For instance, use it to help with:
An unexpected loss of income
Out-of-pocket medical costs and travel for medical care
Home healthcare and rehabilitation expenses
Plus, there’s an option to have your premiums refunded if no claims are filed.
