In Gratitude We Thrive
School Psychology Awareness Week
Mrs. Burkeland with her student’s celebrating Awareness week by creating a Gratitude Tree on a white
board. The tree has seven branches representing the
7 Psychology Periods. Each student will know their
“leaf” and post a gratitude post-note inside the designated leaf/branch-period.
“Gratitude” bracelets were also purchased for students
to pass on to others. The idea is that the wristbands
recognize, through gratitude, individuals, students, and
staff who have made positive contributions to the
school community. The wristbands were to be only
worn for a day or two before being passed on to another. A note was then placed on the tree explaining the
action of which they are expressing gratitude.
Teacher/Support Person of the Month
Congratulations to Mr. Pierrevil and Mr. Galloway for being selected to represent the staff for the month of
December. Pictured below left with the PSLHS Admin Team, Mr. Galloway receives his award. Mr. Galloway is the ASA Guidance Counselor. Below right, with his students, Mr. P receives his award, much to the
pleasure of the students in the photo. Congratulations to both.
Securing Scholarships and Grants: These are the best types of financial aid because they usually don’t have to be repaid.
Students should try to secure as much grant or scholarship money before you consider borrowing for college. Scholarships
are available in a variety of criteria ranging from academic, religious affiliation, gender, community service, ethnicity/race,
talents or other special interest. Scholarships may also be based on financial need. Grants on the other hand are all based
on financial need; they tend to have a narrow focus to qualify. For a list of current scholarships see your guidance counselor
or search online for scholarships. Here are a few websites to consider; Fastweb.com, scholarships.com, collegeboard.com,
and college-scholarships.com. Local scholarships are also available on the St. Lucie County District website through the Education Foundation or Indian River State College Foundation.

The first 9th grade student-led conferences this year will be held on December 9th between 5:00pm and 6:30pm.
Students should have brought home their appointment letters already. If you have any questions, please call 3376715.
The 9th Reading classes have been analyzing informational texts on how an author makes points and connections.
We are using USA Test Preps and the website http://www.newsela.com to enhance students' learning to perform successfully on the upcoming FSA argumentative writing Prompt to be given in December.
As we move forward into the holidays, the 9th grade English department will begin studying a new unit theme-The
Power of Self Sacrifice. Within this unit, the students will be reading and analyzing the short story pieces The Scarlet
Ibis by James Hurst, Thank You M'am by Langston Hughes, and The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry. The students will
also be reading and analyzing the supplemental informational articles The Harlem Renaissance by George Hutchinson
and A Volunteer of Love by Denise Crittendon. While focusing on these reading pieces, students will also be practicing
the writing skills and techniques they have learned so far to prepare for the FSA writing exam this spring.

100 Turkeys to families in need. A loud
shout out to Chef Foerster and the Culinary Crew. For Thanksgiving, the Crew
took on and completed the challenge in
cooking and preparing 100 turkeys for
Mustard Seed Ministries. We can’t be
more proud of this team and this service
to the community they have provided. Not
to mention, the building smelled great for
three days.
