105th Anniversary Gala Celebration
Oh! For the Love of Critters!
December 5, 2013

About Babe
Babe is a polite and
sweet piglet who is
naïve to the realities of
the farm. He is unaware
of his destiny in a world
where humans are top
dog. But the other
animals start talking,
and when Babe learns
what happened to his
family, he realizes that
he must be useful to the farmer to avoid becoming
Christmas dinner. He will have to use his head and heart
and save his own bacon.
The movie is adapted from a children’s novel, The SheepPig, by British writer Dick King-Smith. Special effects allow
the animals to talk while keeping to the character of their
species. Through the story of Babe, played by 48 different
piglets, we gain respect for animals as separate beings in this
wonderful movie.
Babe was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including
Best Picture, winning for Best Special Effects. Babe also won
the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture and earned
international acclaim, winning
18 awards and 17 nominations
the world. The New Yorker
called Babe a “lovely fable of
aspiration and survival” and “an
improbable, eccentric pleasure.”
About Babe’s Costar
Actor James Cromwell became an ethical vegan and animal
welfare activist while playing the role of Farmer Hoggett
in the movie Babe. He currently speaks on behalf of the
organization Mercy for Animals in calling for the humane
treatment of farmed pigs. He is asking Walmart to end its
suppliers’ use of gestation crates. Animal welfare and
behavioral experts agree that gestation crates, in which
animals can barely stand or move, are inherently cruel.
Gestation crates have been banned in nine U. S. states,
including California, and in the entire European Union.
Nearly every major food provider in the United States has
responded to consumer concern and ended the use of
gestation crates; these include McDonald’s, Burger King,
Wendy’s, Chipotle, Safeway, Kroger, Kmart, and Costco.

About PAHS
Through intervention, education, and advocacy the Palo Alto
Humane Society endeavors to create a world where animals can
live free of human cruelty and neglect. PAHS is a vital resource
for animal welfare in the Palo Alto community. It develops,
needs of animals. Such organizations include Palo Alto’s Animal
Shelter, the Humane Education Network, Greyhound
Welfare Foundation, Greyhound Protection League, Stanford
Cat Network, Peninsula Catworks, and Mow Wow Animals.
PAHS specializes in providing spay-neuter programs,
emergency veterinary assistance, and public education.
The Palo Alto Humane Society has deep roots in the
mid-Peninsula and a history of program building. Founded
subsequently managed shelters for the community of Palo
Alto for close to 50 years. After the establishment of Palo Alto
Animal Services, PAHS continued its relationship with the city,
providing contract humane education and night and weekend
emergency animal services for many years. PAHS’ donorsponsored programs complement services offered by the city,
as PAHS continues in its second century of service.
Since 1908 the Palo Alto Humane Society has given a voice to
animals in the mid-Peninsula community.
From its founding in response to common abuses of work
animals and strays, PAHS has intervened to alleviate animal
suffering. Now that humane animal control and shelter
management have become public services, PAHS focuses on
by public programs. PAHS underwrites the spaying and
PAHS funds emergency care for rescued animals and maintains
a hotline to answer pressing concerns.
PAHS introduced humane education to Palo Alto youth
and adults in the early 1900s, and it continues to educate
community members today, to increase public sensitivity to
animals. PAHS has developed Mow Wow Animals, an exciting
new Web-based curriculum for California schools that
represents a whole new animal in humane education.
PAHS organizes school and community events that offer
humane teaching and raise awareness of animal issues.
Early PAHS leaders prevented the use of shelter animals for
medical research and stopped the shooting of stray animals by
police. Animal advocacy remains a core part of PAHS’ mission.
The organization campaigns for humane policies at local, state,
and national levels. PAHS provides advice to the public on
humane choices in local commerce and dining. It has long been
active in organizing grassroots efforts for humane control of
humane issues.
