dom to manifest their beliefs through practice and
observance in their daily lives . . . If the federal
government can force morally opposed individuals
to purchase contraception or abortion-inducing
drugs and devices for a third party, what prevents
this or future administrations from forcing other
Americans to betray their deeply held convictions?”
(The entire text is available at
www.fortnight4freedom.org.
The American Catholic bishops are once
again calling Catholic faithful to participate in a
Fortnight for Freedom: June 21-July 4. It is a
time for Catholics to pray and to witness to our
commitment as Americans as well as Catholics of
moral conscience to the first of our freedoms, the
freedom to hold and to exercise our religious beliefs without government intrusion or coercion.
These two weeks will focus on the theme
“Freedom to Serve.” Our Christian discipleship
has always expressed itself in our commitment to
serve the poor and the vulnerable, especially in
health care and family services. We must protect
the freedom to continue to offer those services
conscientiously. As we read on the USCCB website:
“During the Fortnight, our liturgical calendar celebrates great martyrs who remained faithful in the face of persecution by political power—
St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More, John the
Baptist, Peter and Paul and the first martyrs of
the Church of Rome . . . This is a time when
Catholics can unite themselves in prayer to the
men and women throughout history who spread
the Gospel and lived out Jesus’ call to serve the
‘least of these’ in even the direst of circumstances.”
As we have been doing, we will continue to
publish valuable information in the bulletin and on
the parish website. The first step in safeguarding
our freedom of religion and conscience is to be informed regarding the issues and values at stake.
In Evangelii Gaudium, Pope Frances observed
that "religion [cannot] be relegated to the inner
sanctum of personal life, without influence on societal and national life." Pope Benedict XVI said
that this work belongs in a special way to "an engaged, articulate and well-formed Catholic laity
endowed with a strong critical sense vis-à-vis the
dominant culture.” We must all be committed to
defending these God-given freedoms for all
Americans.
Dear Parishioners,
Consider the following names: Archbishop
William Lori of Baltimore, Chairman of the United
State Conference of Catholic Bishops; Dr. Russell D.
Moore, President of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission; Leith
Anderson, President of the National Association of
Evangelicals; Sister Maria Christine Lynch, l.s.p.,
Provincial Superior, Chicago Province, Little Sisters
of the Poor; Rabbi Aryeh Spero, President, Caucus
for America; Clyde M. Hughes, Bishop / General
Overseer, International Pentecostal Church of
Christ; Stephen Baskerville, Ph.D., Professor of Government, Patrick Henry College; Sister Regina Marie
Gorman, O.C.D., President, Council of Major Superiors of Women Religious; David Stevens, MD, MA,
CEO, Christian Medical Association; Tony Perkins,
President, Family Research Council; Richard Land,
D.Phil., President, Southern Evangelical Seminary;
Alan Sears, President, Alliance Defending Freedom;
Mark Tooley, President, Institute on Religion and
Democracy . . .
The list goes on and on. A diverse group, indeed.
These are just some of the over 100 religious leaders and scholars who are the signers of Standing
Together for Religious Freedom, an open letter
to all Americans that voices concern for our most
cherished right, the right to freedom of religion and
moral conscience, which continues to be threatened
in American society through government interference. The obvious example is the U.S. Department
of Health and Human Services’ mandate requiring
employers to supply contraceptive coverage against
their moral ands religious beliefs. But that is only
one specific example. The signers of the open letter
say, “While the mandate is a specific offense, it represents a greater fundamental breach of conscience
by the federal government” by forcing one citizen or
entity with clear moral convictions to purchase a
product or pay for a service that patently violates
conscience and principles. The signers go on to say,
“The HHS policy is coercive and puts the administration in the position of defining – or casting aside –
religious doctrine. This should trouble every American.” And one important point to note, that this is
not a “Catholic” issue but one of respect for ALL
freedom of conscience, is made when the letter continues: “Many of the signatories of this letter do not
hold doctrinal objections to the use of contraception.
But we stand united in protest to this mandate, recognizing the encroachment on the conscience of our
fellow citizens. Whether or not we agree with this
particular conscientious objection is beside the point.
HHS continues to deny many Americans the free-

A Word from Human Services
At the feast of Pentecost, the love of the Father and Son descends upon us. This spirit of
love is the Holy Spirit. We experience the Triune God and this Gift inspires us to reach out to
others. That is what you did Sunday as a Parish. We collected 7 barrels of food for Our Lady of
Loretto and $3,226 for Anthony House. . Both groups accepted these gifts with gratitude. Jesus
said, “I will send you the Spirit, and this is how the Spirit moves.”
A Call for Greeters at the Food Drive Barrels
The summer food drives will be July 5 and 6 and the August 2 and 3.
If you are able to serve, please call Sister Marie ( 747-3768) and leave your name, the number
you can be reached at, and the Mass at which you can assist us. You may find out you like it
and join the group. Just by giving a little of your time to volunteering at the food drive can
make a big difference in the life of others.
Welcome, Fr. Joseph Scolaro
With great happiness we would like to announce that Bishop Murphy has assigned the Reverend Joseph Scolaro as an associate pastor to the Parish of St.
Joseph.
Fr. Scolaro was ordained this Saturday, June 14, 2014, by Bishop Murphy at
St. Agnes Cathedral. Fr. Scolaro is a native Long Islander. He grew up in
Bayville, a lifelong parishioner of St. Dominic Parish in Oyster Bay, where he
attended elementary school. He went on to Chaminade High School and subsequently the University of Notre Dame. He entered the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception, Huntington, in 2010, to begin the program of priestly
formation. There he pursued his studies in theology for two years, and spent
his remaining two years at St. Joseph's Seminary in Yonkers. We look forward to his parish ministry here at St. Joseph. Welcome, Fr. Scolaro!

Best Wishes, Fr. Innocent & Fr. Todd
We would like to extend our Prayers and Best Wishes to Fr. Innocent Amasiorah and Fr. Todd Saccoccia as they prepare for new parish assignments. Bishop Murphy has assigned Fr. Innocent as
an associate pastor to the parish of St. Anthony of Padua, East Northport. He will also continue his
studies at Fordham University.
Fr. Todd has been appointed an associate pastor in the parish of St. Rose of Lima, Massapequa.
Both assignments take effect on Wednesday, June 25, 2014.
We are grateful for the dedicated ministry of Fr. Innocent in St. Joseph Parish for almost two
years. Fr. Todd has been with us on a temporary assignment for only six months, but in that time
we have come to appreciate his many gifts.
For the past three months we have been talking about the 2014 Catholic Ministries Appeal. Have you responded yet? If
you contribute to the Appeal you will help your less fortunate brother and sisters.
Last year Catholic Charities delivered or served more than 550,000 meals to senior citizens and families.
Your support helps many of the soup kitchens conducted through our parishes.
The Office of Hospital Ministry served more than 300.000 people in local hospitals
Parish Social Ministry Programs assisted more than 19,000 people each month.
If you support the Appeal you help our own parish finance our local ministries s we share the proceeds when we reach our
goal of $172,600.00
The Catholic Church conducts by far the largest and most important charitable program on Long Island. The Appeal deserves your support. Yoe will feel much satisfaction when you contribute to the Appeal.
Thank you!

STEWARDSHIP
A Way of Life
Stewardship Reflection – June 15th
Today we celebrate the relationship between God the Father,
Son and Holy Spirit who invites us into right relationship with
himself and with each other. The first reading tells us that
God is merciful, and gracious, slow to anger and rich in kindness
and
fidelity.
How appropriate that we celebrate Father’s Day today!
We salute and thank all fathers, grandfathers, uncles, teachers and coaches who image the love of the Trinity for those they meet. We pray that they
image the love and kindness of the Trinity in all their contacts.
Sr. Louise Cullen RSM.
Last week’s representatives for the 11:45 Mass –Our new Extraordinary Ministers, 1:00PM – St. Joseph School, 5:30- Respect Life Committee, were left out
of the bulletin. We thank them and all our ministers, who give their Time and Talent to help make our parish an example of a community that invites us to Belong More Deeply.
