W EEKLY R EFLECTIONS
“You Shall Have No Other Gods before Me"
2110 The first commandment forbids honoring gods other than the one Lord who
has revealed himself to his people. It proscribes superstition and irreligion.
Superstition
2111 Superstition is the deviation of religious feeling and of the practices this feeling
imposes. It can even affect the worship we offer the true God, e.g., when one
attributes an importance in some way magical to certain practices.
St. Hedwig,
pray for us.

Św. Jadwigo,

continued from page 1:
Idolatry
2112 The first commandment condemns polytheism. It requires man neither to believe in,
nor to venerate, other divinities than the one true God. Scripture constantly recalls this
rejection of "idols, (of) silver and gold, the work of men's hands. They have mouths, but do
not speak; eyes, but do not see." These empty idols make their worshippers empty: "Those
who make them are like them; so are all who trust in them.” God, however, is the "living God
who gives life and intervenes in history.
READINGS FOR THE WEEK OF
January 30 - February 6, 2011
Sunday:
Monday:
2113 Idolatry consists in divinizing what is not God. Man commits idolatry whenever he
honors and reveres a creature in place of God, whether this be gods or demons (for example,
Satanism), power, pleasure, race, ancestors, the state, money, etc. Jesus says, "You cannot
serve God and mammon. Many martyrs died for not adoring "the Beast” refusing even to
simulate such worship. Idolatry rejects the unique Lordship of God;
Tuesday:
Divination and magic
Friday:
2116 All forms of divination are to be rejected: recourse to Satan or demons, conjuring up the
dead or other practices falsely supposed to "unveil" the future. Consulting horoscopes,
Saturday:
astrology, palm reading, interpretation of omens and lots, the phenomena of
clairvoyance, and recourse to mediums all conceal a desire for power over time, history,
and, in the last analysis, other human beings, as well as a wish to conciliate hidden
powers. They contradict the honor, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God alone.
2117 All practices of magic or sorcery, by which one attempts to tame occult powers, so as to
place them at one's service and have a supernatural power over are gravely contrary to the
virtue of religion. These practices are even more to be condemned when accompanied by the
intention of harming someone, or when they have recourse to the intervention of demons.
Irreligion
2118 God's first commandment condemns the main sins of irreligion: tempting God, in
words or deeds, sacrilege, and simony. For example:
Sacrilege consists in profaning or treating unworthily the sacraments and other liturgical
actions, as well as persons, things, or places consecrated to God. Sacrilege is a grave sin
especially when committed against the Eucharist, for in this sacrament the true Body of
Christ is made substantially present for us.

Many people think that a spiritual life is in conflict or in contradiction to a life in the world.
For some spiritualities, that may be the case. In the community of discipleship of Jesus and in the
connection with that community in the Church, there is no contradiction between a spiritual life
and a life in the world. In fact, faith defines and strengthens believers’ connection with the world.
In John’s gospel, Jesus prays for his disciples. He anticipates his departure from the world and
their continued presence in the world. He addresses his heavenly Father and says: I am not asking
you to take them out of the world, but I ask you to protect them from the evil one…As you have
sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, so
that they also may be sanctified in truth. (John 17:15, 18)
A faith commitment lived out in the Church defines and strengthens believers’ relationship and
connection to the world by giving believers a purpose or mission in the world. Believers are sent,
as Jesus was sent. They exercise stewardship or responsibility for the world. This stewardship
extends, of course, to the physical resources upon which we depend for sustaining life on this
planet, our ecological responsibility. Beyond that, stewardship involves a responsibility for the
specifically human ecology embedded in the political order and the quest for justice and peace.
Believers are also connected to the world by their sharing in the creative energy of the creator
through their work for the world’s transformation. Again, this includes not only the physical
dimensions of earthly existence but also the cultivation of art and beauty and the creation of a
more humane world through work, the labor of our hands and minds.
In and through the Church as a community of faithful disciples of Jesus, believers find
themselves more intensely connected and committed to the fate of the earth on which they dwell
in all its physical and human dimensions.

REFLECCION
algún modo, mágica a ciertas prácticas.
Y no venerar otras
“No podéis servir a
que equivocadamente se supone “desvelan” el porvenir (cf Dt 18, 10;
Jr 29, 8).
solamente a Dios.
lugares consagrados a Dios.
Hemos

REFLEKSJE TYGODNIA
66
III. Nie będziesz miał bogów cudzych przede Mną”.
2110 Pierwsze przykazanie zabrania oddawania czci innym bogom
poza Jedynym Panem, który objawił siebie swojemu ludowi.
To przykazanie zakazuje:
Zabobonu:
Te czcze bożki czynią człowieka pustym: "Do
Bóg natomiast jest "Bogiem żywym" (Joz 3,10; Ps 42, 3 i in.),
który daje życie i działa w historii.
miejsce wtedy, gdy człowiek czci i wielbi stworzenie zamiast Boga,
ludźmi, a jednocześnie pragnieniem zjednania sobie ukrytych mocy.
Magia i Czary
pozyskania tajemnych sił, by posługiwać się nimi i osiągać
Dlatego
Kościół upomina wiernych, by wystrzegali się ich.
