California DFW a “Star” at ISE
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife gets
a lot of flack when anything about the outdoors
doesn’t go “our” way. That’s partly because most
of us live in the now, while DFW must take the long
view. They also must work with the Feds, businesses,
environmentalists–any entity associated with
water, land, forest or sky. In other words, just about
everybody. Really. That’s a tough job....
But remember: there would be no fish or game
without DFW! Let’s take this time to ask questions,
make suggestions and thank them, too. They
deserve that.
ISE is proud to partner with DFW on several levels at
this year’s show, including:
• Discounted licenses, plus experts to answer
your questions (Booth 3700)
• Bringing the Director and Chiefs to talk with
outdoor enthusiasts Saturday, 1:00 at the
California Sportsmen Theater (Pavilion)
• Activities and experts in the Youth Fair @ Expo
Center (new location; still opens 3pm on Friday)
• Providing bass for the Aquarium Tank (Pavilion),
and trout for Lucy’s Kids’ Pond (Youth Fair)
• Creating and presenting the annual Youth
Conservation Award, Saturday, 3:30, at the
Adventure Theater (Building A)

DFW’s Hunter Education Program
Presents 4th Annual Youth Award
Please join us Saturday, Jan. 23, 3:30, at the Adventure
Theater, for the presentation ceremony! Junior-huntinglicense holders or youth under 16 who had a valid 2015
hunter education certificate were eligible. Contestants
submitted an essay on what “Passing on the Tradition”
Building 7
Fishing
meant to them. “A vital part of the hunter education
program is passing on this time-honored tradition,”
said Robert Pelzman, DFW’s Hunter Education Program
Administrator. “We wanted to recognize one of the more
than 20,000 students who pass through our program
each year. We’ll do that with a lifetime California hunting
license, valued at $600.”

Sportsmen Theater
Each year the California Sportsmen Theater, hosted
by Sep Hendrickson, gathers the finest guides and
local-water experts for info-packed seminars.
Come early. Stay long, and enjoy the free tackle, too!
KEVIN BROCK will cover all the king
salmon hot spots and key times on the
valley rivers. Techniques addressed
include float fishing and back bouncing
with roe, trolling spinners, boondoggling,
and back trolling with flat fish. For the first
time, Brock will share his secrets on how
to cure your own roe and smoke your own
salmon.
STEVE CARSON is one of the industry’s
most knowledgeable anglers and
instructors. He’ll present San Diego longrange trips, quite possibly the ultimate
fishing excursion. This fun and informative
seminar will include tackle, tips and
information about trips from 3 to 14 days,
and about catching yellowfin tuna, bluefin
tuna, yellowtail, dorado, wahoo.
ABE CUANANG is probably the best angler
to say just how to improve your chances of
success with white sturgeon.
James Stone
Tony Sepulveda
Scott Feist
Kevin Brock
ANGELO CUANANG has more than 30
years experience fishing for saltwater
species, including striper.
MIKE GRAVERT owns Intimidator
Sportfishing. He’ll teach you two of his
favorite techniques and all of his trade
secrets for chasing the delta’s premier
game fish: striped bass. When to target
them, tides, locations, and the equipment.
Plus, electronics, taking care of live bait,
more.
STEVE HUBER will cover the basic
methods needed for successful fishing on
the Klamath and Trinity Rivers. He’ll detail
salmon and steelhead gear.
RICK KENNEDY’s kokanee talk will cover
tips gained from nearly 20 years guiding in
the high country lakes, including trolling
with old-school tactics plus new techniques
with topics such as lure colors, depths,
leader length, presentation.
JAY LOPES, “The Sturgeon Kid”, owns
Right Hook Sportfishing. He’ll cover how he
puts hundreds of sturgeon on his clients’
lines. Currents, tides, baits, terminal
tackle.
SCOTT FEIST offers year-round, fully
guided fishing trips on the Sacramento,
Feather and Yuba rivers in a 25-ft. Willie
Boat Jet boat.

National Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame member
SEP HENDRICKSON created and hosts the theater. Long-time host
of the award-winning “California Sportsmen” radio show Saturday
from 6-8a on KHTK AM 1140, Sep makes time to practice what he
preaches, fishing for trophy-sized trout and salmon, landlocked
kokanee and king salmon, and hunting pheasant, chucker, quail,
turkey and wild boar. With his wife, Marilyn, Sep owns Sep’s
Outdoors, which produces “Ultimate Bass” on KHTK. The couple
remain a driving force with the California Inland Fisheries
Foundation Inc., and helped popularize ultralight fishing in the
West with the tackle company they created, Sep’s Pro Fishing.
Now “retired,” Sep works even harder...in the outdoors.

Anglers, hunters and sportsmen will once again
have access to the top management and decision-makers
of the California Department of Fish & Wildlife at the
International Sportsmens Expo.
Director Bonham and his top management team
will be on hand at a special question-and-answer and
informational panel to be held at the California Sportsmen
Theater on Saturday, January 23, from 1-2PM.
Sep Hendrickson, host of the award-winning
California’s North Coast. Included:
run timing, rigging, tactics and gear
Tony owns and operates Eureka-based
Green Water Fishing Adventures.
JAMES BASS SMITH will offer better
tips on fishing the bays for stripers,
sturgeon, shark, halibut, rock cod, ling
cod, crab and salmon.
“California Sportsmen” Radio Show on KHTK 1140AM,
developed the panel with the intent of increasing
communication and informing the public about the
decision-making process within the CDFW.
This opportunity provides northern California’s
sportsmen with the unique ability to relate and receive
clarification and solid information from CDFW regarding
direction, goals, regulations, studies, licenses, tags,
stamps, enforcement and more. “It’s an informative
panel and might put a few on the hot seat, but that’s the
idea,” said Hendrickson. “You can bet that California’s
sportsmen will be heard, and CDFW is there to listen and
clarify.”
Put faces to the names–let the Director and
his team know how you feel about issues, outdoor
opportunities and a whole lot more!

Sponsored by Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, this stage features several new
topics and presenters--local guides, TV-show hosts and magazine publishers.
On Saturday, show your support at two special presentations and celebrate the
past and future. At 3:30 the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW)
and the Wildlife Officer Foundation will announce winners of the annual
Passing on the Tradition essay contest. Then, at 4:30, join us to induct new
members of the California Outdoor Hall of Fame. Our host is Tom Stienstra,
author and San Francisco Chronicle Outdoor Columnist.
KENTON CLAIRMONT is the owner
of Train To Hunt and the Train To Hunt
Challenge. He is a former collegiate
and professional baseball player who
spent his youth hunting and fishing the
mountains of North Idaho. Although
he started his training career back
in the mid ‘90s it wasn’t until 2010
that Kenton introduced the outdoor
world to his training program designed
specifically for hunters. ‘People need
something to train for. So I designed an
event that puts a bowhunter’s fitness
to the test.” 2016 will see an new T2H
event in California.
GUY EASTMAN is one of ISE’s mostpopular speakers. Guy has been
hunting and filming western trophy big

share tips at his deer talk. Parrey’s
second seminar is on predator hunting
for bear and coyote. He says: “With
the pursuit of bears and bobcats with
dogs taken away from us, now more
than ever we need to step up to control
predators.” His talk covers nearby
predators, calling techniques, proven
set-ups, and particular weapons that
excel for this type of hunting.
