ST. PATRICK’S DAY
E
very year on March 17, the Irish and the
Irish-at-heart across the globe observe St. Patrick’s Day.
What began as a religious feast day for the patron saint of
Ireland has become an international festival celebrating
Irish culture with parades, dancing, special foods and a
whole lot of green. To celebrate the occasion, Barnert
Subacute Rehabilitation Center will have a special St.
Patty’s Day Patient and Family Luncheon, and
entertainment on March 17, at 12:00PM – 1:00PM.
The costume parade will follow at 3:00PM. To join the
fun and excitement, please R.S.V.P. on or before March
11th, Friday and look for the Receptionist at 973.754.0999
or call The Activity Department at ext. 1235.

Black History Month or National
African American History Month,
is an annual celebration of
achievements by black Americans
and a time for recognizing the
central role of African Americans
in U.S. history. The event grew out
of “Negro History Week”, the
brainchild of noted historian Carter
G. Woodson and other prominent
African Americans. Since 1976,
every U.S. president has officially
designated the month of February
as Black History Month. Other
countries around the world,
including Canada and the United
Kingdom, also devote a month to
celebrating black history.
ADMINISTRATOR’S CORNER
I
The story of Black History Month
begins in 1915, half a century after the
Thirteenth Amendment abolished
slavery in the United States. That
September,
the
Harvard-trained
historian Carter G. Woodson and the
prominent minister Jesse E. Moorland
founded the Association for the Study
of Negro Life and History (ASNLH),
an
organization
dedicated
to
researching
and
promoting
achievements by black Americans and
other peoples of African descent.
Known today as the Association for the
Study of African American Life and
History (ASALH), the group sponsored
a national Negro History week in 1926,
choosing the second week of February
to coincide with the birthdays of
Abraham Lincoln and Frederick
Douglass.

have been blessed to be part of the Friedman “Family of Caring” Healthcare System for three years and most
recently appointed at Barnert. My goal as Administrator is to lead our team of healthcare professionals, providing
quality care to our patients and enhancing the lives of their families, our staff and the community.
I look at each day as a chance to make a
difference, provide support and assure we are not
only meeting, but strive to exceed standards of
care. Feel free to stop in my office to chat about
any concerns or accolades you may have to offer. I
am always open to improvement and our patients
remain top priority.

HORTICULTURE THERAPY
Benefits of horticultural therapy include physical
activity, relaxation and enjoyment, skill development,
creative expression, sensory stimulation, intellectual
and personal growth, social interaction, a sense of
productivity and self-satisfaction and a spiritual
connection with life. Gardening is also known to help
improve memory, critical thinking, and language
skills. In addition, horticultural therapy can also
help those in need of physical rehabilitation.
Gardening can help strengthen muscles and improve
coordination, balance and endurance.
