FROM FATHER ANTHONY
If we were to take a good look
at today’s society, we would realize
that the behavior of many individuals
stems from a basic lack of self-control.
We could come up with an endless list
of examples, such as substance abuse,
violence, promiscuity, anger, rudeness,
verbal and physical abuse, gambling,
cursing, adultery, glu7ony, pre-marital
sex, road-rage, self indulgence, lying,
cheating, excessive materialism, and so
on, just to name a few.
Unfortunately, some of these behaviors can become so
out of control that they can adversely affect others. Some recent
examples are the tragic random shootings at various schools
and other venues. Although this type of incident is still a rare
occurrence, unfortunately, there has been an increase in such
events. “Going postal” was not part of our vocabulary a few
years back. In today’s world, one never really knows what
could happen in any given place, and at any time. The reality is
that we have been forced to live with domestic terrorism.
There is no doubt in my mind that as society becomes
more secularized, it also becomes plagued with all sorts of problems and an increase in violent crimes. With an increasing number of people having no faith tradition, there are countless souls
with no sense of accountability to a higher power. The bad apples of this sector of society have no problem behaving inappropriately, or even criminally, when it behooves them. Those who
are not criminally minded are still susceptible to behaviors that
are outside the realm of morality and ethics, which again, stem
from a lack of self-control.
In regards to the Christian community, there are various
ways of dealing with issues of self-control. Prayer, of course, is
the starting point since it is an integral part of one’s spiritual life.
The first step in controlling one’s various passions, is to prayerfully acknowledge their existence and the amount of control
they have on one’s life.
In our Orthodox Christian spiritual tradition, there is
one other powerful tool at our disposal, which is fasting. Fasting had always been an integral part of the spiritual lives of early Christians, as well as devout Orthodox Christians throughout
the ages. For the Orthodox, fasting basically consists of an alteration of foods consumed as a starting point. The general rule is
that animal products and alcoholic beverages are prohibited
when one is fasting. We Orthodox Christians fast on Wednesdays and Fridays each week (with some exceptions), and during
certain periods of the year, in order to strive to control various
passions and to remind ourselves of our constant dependence
upon God for all things in life.
The correct understanding of fasting has always incorporated prayer and the performing of good works as necessary counterparts; otherwise, it would be practiced in vain.
The spiritually healthy Orthodox Christian ideally focuses
more clearly on God through prayer during times of fasting,
because he has willingly controlled the basic bodily passion
for food and drink. In this prayerful state of mind, he not
only encounters God more readily through prayer, but also
through his fellow man by involving himself in charitable
works.
What is important to stress here, is that true fasting
does not remain on the level of food consumption. Here is
where the ability to control undesirable behaviors comes in.
When we’re able to control what we eat and drink, we can
then take fasting to a higher level. Sincere, prayerful fasting
leads to fasting of the total person – fasting from what we
say, what we listen to, what we look at, what we do, etc. The
combination of prayer and fasting can give us the strength to
tackle many issues which seek to control us.
Obviously, I’m not trying to naively insinuate that
mass murderers would not commit crimes if they would only
learn to fast! There are many types of negative behavior that
are based on a multitude of complex issues. In such cases,
spiritual guidance is only the beginning of what is truly
needed in order to help. The average Christian, however,
could reap immense spiritual benefit through a fine-tuned
spiritual life that would include fasting.
As an Orthodox priest, I’m obviously biased toward
a holistic spiritual life that emphasizes prayer, fasting, regular liturgical and sacramental participation, performing good
works, and so forth. In a general sense though, all those who
believe in God should seek the full inclusion of Him in their
lives through whatever means they know. Basically, we are
all children of God, and as any child we are in need of his
unending and unconditional love, as well as his mercy and
divine guidance.
Beloved in Christ, please remember that we have a
13-day fast period coming up on August 1st, in honor of the
Dormition of the Holy Theotokos. Let us use this holy period
– our “summer Lent” – in order to keep our own passions
and self-control in check. As far as the rest of society, it is
our obligation to continually pray for the world. Hopefully,
our own example of sincere Christian spirituality can perhaps affect others around us to seek Christ in their lives.
Asking for the intercessions of the Holy Theotokos,
+Fr. Anthony

FAST OF THE THEOTOKOS
The “Pascha of summer” will soon be upon us. This holy season in honor of the holy Mother of God
is a time for spiritual renewal through prayer, strict fasting, charitable acts, frequent church a7endance, and
receipt of the holy mysteries of Confession and Holy Communion. Please note that, as we do every year, the
Paraklesis (supplication service) to the Theotokos will be chanted each weeknight of the fast. I will also be available for
confession after each Paraklesis, or during office hours by appointment.
The general guidelines of the Church for this fast season are identical to those of Great Lent, for those
who are able to follow them. On weekdays we fast from all animal products, including fish, as well as wine
(all alcoholic beverages) and olive oil (many substitute vegetable oil). On Saturdays and Sundays, we are
permi7ed wine and olive oil. On the feast of the Transfiguration of our Lord on August 6, we are also permi7ed fish, along with wine and oil. Please remember that on all fast days, shellfish is always permi7ed.
As we always state, these guidelines to not apply to those with compromised health, pregnancy, or
other similar situations. Let us all take up our spiritual armor and prepare for this great feast of the Mother
of God, to the best of our ability.
REGARDING THE PARAKLESIS SERVICE
Unfortunately, many of us do not a7end any of the multiple Parak lesis services offered to the Holy Mother
of God during the fast of the Theotokos. This is one of the most popular services of the Church, laden with
poetic hymns set to simple, yet beautiful melodies. The hymns make very clear to us the important role of
the blessed Panayia in the life of the Church. They extol her as Mother of God and mediator between Christ
and humanity. Following are some excerpts from the service. Hopefully, these will inspire us to come and
be blessed by the Theotokos while a7ending the Paraklesis.
O Theotokos, we shall never be silent of your mighty acts, all we the unworthy. Had you not stood to intercede
for us, who would have delivered us from the numerous perils? Who would have preserved us all until now with our
freedom? O Lady, we shall not depart from you; for you always save your servants from all tribulation.
With my temptations surrounding me, searching for salvation I have sought refuge in you; O Mother of the
Word and ever-Virgin, from all distresses and dangers deliver me.
With most serious ailments and with the passions so dark, I am being tested, O Virgin, come and bring help to
me; for I have known of you, that you are without fail the endless treasure of cures, only all-blameless one.
I know you as the protection of my life, a steadfast shelter and refuge, O Virgin; disperse the host of my many
temptations, and force away the demonic aXacks from me. I pray to you unceasingly, from corruption of passions deliver me.
The streams of my many tears, reject not, Holy Virgin; for you gave birth to the One who dried all the tears,
from all the faces of people; The Christ was born of you.
From the great multitude of my sins, ill am I in body, ill am I also in my soul. I am fleeing to you, the one who
is all-blessed, the hope of all the hopeless, please come bring help to me.
Lady and the Mother of Him who saves, receive the supplications of the lowly who pray to you. Mediate between us and the One you brought forth; O Lady of all people, intercede for us.
MOST HOLY THEOTOKOS, SAVE US!

FROM FATHER ANTHONY
SPIRITUAL WISDOM
Even the Saints of God were at times seized with despair and despondency. What, therefore, can we sinners expect? O, the enemy often wounds us by the wrath, humiliation, and cruel despondency of the heart! We must continually turn to God and be every moment with Him, in order that we may not be besieged with the wrath and despondency
of the enemy. There are other means, besides, of escaping from them – the broad way of the world; only, if you give
yourself up to worldly pleasures, despondency will leave you for a time, at least while the pleasures last. But afterwards you will be captivated by these pleasures; they will become a necessity to you, and you will find comfort and joy
in them, and in them alone; but may God preserve every Christian from finding his only way of escape from despondency of the devil through such means! It is beXer to walk in the narrow path, to patiently bear despondency, and to seek
frequent help and deliverance from the Lord Jesus Christ, Who always rejoices over those laboring for their salvation for
His sake, than to enter on the broad and smooth way of the world and purchase there, by means of the pleasure of the
flesh, freedom from the spirit of despondency. By means of this spirit of despondency, the enemy has driven many from
the narrow path of salvation onto the broad, smooth path which leads to destruction. (St. John of Kronstadt)
Christian life means to become like Christ; to have, as Saint Paul tells us, the same movements of the heart, the
same thoughts, as the Son of the Father. If we remain conscious of this goal, if inwardly we go with all our being in this
direction, our mind will not be lost in peXy things. Envy, jealousy, frictions, and the minute problems of daily life will
pass completely unnoticed. (Archimandrite Sophrony, spiritual son of St. Silouan)
A MESSAGE TO OUR VACATIONING BRETHREN
Beloved brothers and sisters in Christ, while we enjoy our summer vacations let us not forget our
spiritual obligations to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. This not only includes daily prayers, but also
church a7endance on Sundays and feast days. If traveling domestically, one can usually find Orthodox
churches of multiple jurisdictions in most major cities. Remember, we are all Ortho do x regardless if we are
Greek, Russian, Serbian, Arabic, etc., so please a7end no ma7er the nationality! If we are traveling internationally, there is still a good chance of finding an Orthodox church in many foreign capital and major cities.
If you will remain local during the summer, please continue to a7end church. Remember, the Church
is not on vacation! For those with summer homes on Cape Cod, as you probably know, there are two Orthodox churches from which to choose (why not try both?).
When traveling, always remember to bring a small portable icon with you, along with a prayer book
(our bookstore volunteers can help you with this). If you don’t want to carry a Bible, you can always find
the daily scripture readings on our wonderful Archdiocesan website – www.goarch.org.

Philoptochos Ends Its Year With a Night of Celebration
On June 4, 2014, the Ladies’ Philoptochos celebrated their end of the year at Chinatown Restaurant in
Stoughton. It was a night of festivity as Philoptochos paid tribute to Bertha Weinberg for her twenty seven years
serving as chairwoman for the Sunday coffee hours. Guests enjoyed the display of photographs showing fifty years
of Philoptochos activities as well as the plentiful assortment of food. Bertha was surprised with a corsage, plaque,
and gift card. Here are the words of appreciation she delivered that evening.
“Thank you for this honor you have bestowed upon me. I am touched and sincerely appreciate it. It has
been my pleasure and my honor to serve my church and our community. I had such a wonderful time and made
many dear friends in the fifty years I have been in Philoptochos.
Looking back, I realize I have gone through six priests and held every office except Treasurer. I guess you
never trusted me with your money! I have fond memories of chairing dinner dances, fashion shows, decorating for
Easter, working at Palm Sunday cake sales, and of course chairing my AXic Treasures table since our very first
festival on Warren Ave. You always called my stuff “junk,” but I know many of you did preXy well at my table!
My 27 years of chairing the coffee hour has given me my greatest pleasure. It gave me the opportunity to
meet new people and socialize. A sincere thank you to the wonderful hostesses who helped make our coffee hour
such a success.
Again, thank you all for this tribute – at least now I will have something to write in my obituary. And to
the new generation of Philoptochos members, I hope you will always remember me as the Greek lady with a Jewish
name who always wore a hat to church on Sundays.“

Our annual Greek Food Festival is just around the corner!
As we all know, the single biggest factor contributing to the success of our Festival is the commitment
from over 150 of our parishioners that work long hours prior to and during the Festival.
Many other parishioners that are unable to work during the Festival have, over the years, generously
donated merchandise or made monetary donations to help defray the costs that we incur.
For those of our parishioners that would like to donate merchandise, we have prepared
a list of items that we utilize at the Festival.
It would be greatly appreciated if you, your business, or your employer could help us
defray the cost by donating merchandise.
