It has always been popular with
tourists, but The Wirral is expecting
an even bigger influx of visitors next
year.
There’s a clear enthusiasm for golf in the area,
which has 14 courses, and that drove The Open
to record attendances in 2006. The competition
is now set to return to the Royal Liverpool Golf
Club in 2014.
But it isn’t just golf that makes The Wirral
famous, as my recent visit went to show.
An area with breathtaking coast and countryside, including spectacular shores and cliffs it
also has an impressive collection of hotels and
guest houses, award-winning restaurants and
so many visitor attractions, you will need to
return again and again to fit them all in.
As it is surrounded by rivers and the sea, with
some of the cleanest beaches in Western
Europe, it is gaining a growing reputation for
being one of the best places in the North West
for watersports.
These can be enjoyed at the Wirral Sailing
Centre in West Kirby. The centre also does popular two hour boat trips, taking you round the

Businesses in the region are also getting a
major boost next year when The Wirral hosts the
International Festival of Business with Liverpool,

world-class events is expected to bring £100 million of inward investment to Britain. A great
tourist destination, one of The Wirral’s most popular seaside towns, New Brighton, has just

More of the outdoors comes your way with

ral Pavilion theatre, which celebrated its centenary in May. There is also now a 66-bed Travelodge hotel, 1,000 seat, eight-screen cinema,
a 24,000 sq ft casino, while the marine lake has
been dredged, cleaned and enhanced to offer
a range of pursuits including canoeing, kayaking, sailing, windsurfing and water orbing.
The model boating lake has also been rebuilt, as has the 327.8 m promenade from the
Floral to Marine Point, providing extensive outdoor seating.
My partner Michael and I headed for Hillbark
Hotel in Frankby, Merseyside’s only five-star
hotel. A grade two listed building set within Royden Park, it was built in 1891. It is simply a wonderful place to stay, and was once completely
taken over by pop star Beyonce for herself and
her entourage to stay in. As well as a wonderful
hotel, it also has a famed restaurant.
The Wro Bar & Lounge in West Kirby has won
‘Best Bar’ for two years running and the Tourism
Entrepreneur category for 2012 in the Liverpool
City Region Tourism Awards.
A must for your to do list while visiting The
Wirral is a stop off at Port Sunlight.
An enchanting picture postcard village, it was
founded on the four principles of industry, art,
education and charity.
Another famous stop off is Ness Botanic Gardens. It has 60 acres of landscaped gardens,
with the finest collection of rhododendron and
