A letter from Julie
Where are you going for Christmas? Relatives? Friends? Or are you
planning just a quiet Christmas at home? Its good to know where you
will be and what you will be doing. Many of us are already well into the
planning and are looking forward to it. Some people though will not be
looking forward to it – the lonely, the bereaved, the sick; for others,
such as the refugees we have been seeing on our news screens, it will
be just another day to survive to the next.
The first Christmas didn’t go according to the plan Joseph and Mary
had. Instead of a secure room for the night, they too found themselves out in the cold with nowhere to go. The Saviour of the World
was born in a cowshed. No Oxfam, no Band Aid – this family just had
the help of a local businessman. A simple innkeeper who, seeing poor
people in need, did his best with what he could offer.
You might be thinking that right now, the world looks as though God
doesn’t have a plan. But He does. Sooner or later, the world will
understand what love really means. When that happens, there will be
Peace on Earth.
Dare to believe it.
Come and experience Christmas with us.
Services over Christmas will be:
Sunday 20th Dec, 3pm Christmas Carols at The House of the Open
Door (Tythe Barn)
Christmas Eve, 4pm Christingle Service at St Mary’s Church
Christmas Morning, 10am Eucharist at St. Mary’s Church.
All are welcome as we, in turn welcome Christ into the world and into
our hearts.
May the Love and Light of Jesus Christ be with you now and always.
Julie Fay.

St Mary’s Church Boiler and Heating
The parochial church council ( PCC ) has after long consideration has taken the view of
a diocesan energy expert. The heating plan will be in stages.
Stage 1. To invest in electric pew heating for the first 5 rows on each side and electric heating for the vestry and altar and at the back of the church . This will be the
most cost efficient. A present estimate for the pews is around £6500. This has proved
to be the best for several churches across the counties.
Further stages. Longer term view is to extend the pew heating in a similar manner
and to replace the boiler and a new oil tank . This will provide a background heating.
Reliance on a boiler alone would prove to be more expensive in getting the church to
comfortable temperatures for the short times that the church needs heating. It would
cover frost situations. It has been recognised that the old boiler is past its sell-by-date.
The old oil tank does not meet current regulations.
The present boiler fund sits at around £11 000 from the efforts of parishioners. The
PCC gratefully recognise this. Further detail can be got from PCC members.
At present Gloucester Diocese still has overall control and the PCC has to apply for
“faculties”. Decisions as they arise will be posted in STOP PRESS.

The treasurer has reported an increase in hall lettings which has improved the
financial position which has enabled the hall to be maintain to a high standard
and facilities added when possible.
Buzz Electrical Services conducted the 5 year mandatory electrical testing of
the Memorial Hall it was discovered to conform to current legislation updating
of the electrical system was required, the cost of this was £1738.
With this expenditure in mind it was decided as there had been no increase in
hall hire charges for 3 years to make a modest increase in charges
The Rag Bag has continued to be supported in the last year raising £455.00,
thank you to those who have contributed to it Unfortunately Rag Bag has decided not to continue collecting useable clothes indicating the rising cost of collecting from the Rag Bag bin and the down turn of the used clothing market,

On Monday 12th October Mick Watkins from the English Carpet Bowling
Association gave a demonstration of the skills of bowling to an audience of 25
which was followed that evening by trying their hand at the game. The following Monday evening and Tuesday afternoon bowling began at the Memorial hall,
the charge of £3.00 per session was possible as Mick Watkins had located a
second hand mat and bowls for £150.00 a tenth of the cost of new equipment

Childswickham WI
Members have played skittles, been to the cinema and attended the Autumn Council
Meeting since the last meeting. Mary gave a short summary of this meeting where they
listened to two very interesting speakers ‘ The great British Florist’ and Mandy Hickson
the first female Tornado pilot.
Members were informed about the lunch at the Ebrington Arms in November and the
New Year meal.
The November meeting was the AGM attended by 32 members and 2 guests. One committee member felt it was time to step down after many years excellent service in a number
of roles, and 3 new members agreed to join the committee to bring it up to 11 members.
Marilyn was re-elected as President for a further year
Childswickham WI has had a very successful year maintaining and increasing its membership to 44. A special year marking 100 years since the start of WI has heralded a number of events. A Queen’s garden party and a National AGM which made the press with
cake cutting.
Alongside local events the group has had speakers about Broadway’s War memorial, Film
catering, and the impact of war on Women as well as finding out more about pearls, listening to music from Shakespeare, the science of coffee, and seeing Tudor times come to
life. Grace and Merleen introduced us to Dogs for the deaf as well as proposing a Resolution. We dabbled in crochet, sugar, scones, flower arranging and monoprinting.
Members attended meetings with Michael Portillo, Spring and Autumn Council meetings
as well as going to the cinema, attending a craft workshop for enamelling at Jinny ring
craft centre, and of course those lunch outings.
The meeting then continued with cheese and wine and a Quiz enjoyed by all.
Members were reminded of the Table Top/Craft Fayre and the Christmas Party. Subs and
Teas on Jan 6th 3 pm.
Women’s Group
Childswickham Women’s Group has continued to raise money with coffee mornings throughout the
year. The October Ploughman’s lunch raised a wonderful £420 for Hearing Dogs for the Deaf.
Thank you to everyone who contributed or supported this event .

Dear Residents,
Well Christmas is coming, and judging from shop windows, has been coming since the end
of September!!
A family always had a Christmas tree placed in the hall. It was beautifully decorated with
the obligatory angel on the top. As Christmas drew near the presents were accumulated
around the bottom of the tree. Each was labelled with recipient's name and giver's
name. All were wrapped beautifully and laid down carefully for distribution on Christmas
Day. But then there appeared one present which stood out. The wrapping was in gold paper and seemed to glow. The ribbon was obviously very expensive, but like no other that
anybody had ever seen. The label read 'A present for you all'. On Christmas Day all the other presents were given out. Beautiful jewellery, top range magazine subscriptions, vouchers for a Spa, a leather handbag, silk ties and even a silk waistcoat. The children's presents
were wonderful as well, with all the top technological equipment anyone could hope
for. OOhs and AAhs followed each opening. But the best present of all lay unopened. 'It's
not for me.' 'Nor for me.' 'Is it for you?' 'No I don't thing so.' Nobody picked up the golden
package - content with their own expensive gifts already opened. But that present had another message on the back of the label. It said 'With love from God.' The gift was the baby
Jesus, which God had sent to change each ones life. To set them free from anxiety, to bring
peace and the promise of eternal life.
We all need to take and accept that most precious gift this Christmas. Do not leave it under
the tree.
I wish you God's blessing this Christmas.
Wendy Foulger (Rev) Acting Vicar of Aston Somerville.
p.s. Do come to the Christmas Day Family Communion on Christmas Day at 9.45a.m. We
would love the children to bring their presents to show us all. In return receive God's
blessing in the baby Jesus.
FACEBOOK
Like it or loathe it it is proving to be a good communication set up
acroos villages and communities
Childswickham, Hinton, and Willersey have their own facebook pages.
Winter coming up and they do not promise us an easy one weather wise.
We need to keep an eye on all of the villages. If anyone needs help or hits a
crisis point then let the village page know and somehow some where help is
around the corner.
It’s the time of the year to check on your out houses. Make sure they are
locked carefully. A case in Hinton where someone has had tools pinched.
If you are disappearing for winter sun let your neighbours know.
Make a point of getting to know what cars your neighbours have so if there
are any suspicious ones in or around your neighbourhood make a note of
registrations.

St Peters Church – Christmas Bazaar
On Tuesday 24th November, we will be holding our last Coffee Morning for 2015 in the Church and like the past few years, this will also
be our Christmas Bazaar with a selection of stalls from 10.30am –

If anyone is interested in having a stall please contact Clare Davies on
07814188077 or email [email protected]. There is no cost for a
stall we just ask for a small donation to be made on the day.
Harvesteen Success
We held our annual Harvest Supper (Harvesteen) on Saturday 31st October and once again a very successful event with lots of support. We were entertained by Dampiers’ Round and the Drakes Broughton
Bell Ringers. He whole evening was magical. We raised over £700 towards the Church Roof Repairs. As
you may have been in the Evesham Journal, we did receive a grant to £98100.00 towards these repairs,
however, the final bill could be as much as £110,000. It's a stunning building, and we can't secure its future until we fix the roof, so all this extra fundraising is needed.
Christmas Services
13th December 11:15 we have Lessons and Carols
20th December 16:00 come and join in our Christingle Service
24th December 23:30 our beautiful Midnight Mass with Mulled Wine and Mince Pies.

Hinton church roof work:
Some of you may recall that Hinton was delighted, way back in April, to learn that it had
been successful in applying for a £100,000 grant from the Listed Places of Worship Roof
Repair Fund. But have heard little from us since then. That's because we're like ducks
swimming upstream - there's an awful lot going on under the surface, but not much
movement!
We learned that the project needs a "Faculty" from the diocese (which is the diocese/Cof-E mechanism for ensuring that any alterations to their churches are controlled and
done properly) and also Planning Permission and Listed Building Consent from
Wychavon. The latter is needed because the repairs to tower roof require that it is
changed from a slate roof to a lead roof - and thus, its appearance will change. Although
only low flying aircraft and birds will be aware of the change!
In order to apply for those things, we needed a fully detailed job specification and drawings. These have now been done, and run to over one hundred pages! And our applications have now been submitted to the diocese and to Wychavon. The work has gone out
to tender and our hope is that scaffolding will be erected, and the job started, early in
2016.
