Blue Cap threw a New Orleans style Fat
Tuesday party with a parade and a classic
Cajun and Creole potluck to follow. Everyone got in the spirit of Mardi Gras donning
masks and marching through the halls to
songs which have been passed down through
generations.

See you next Fat Tuesday!!”
From our Executive Director, Tony Di Vittorio
Dear Friends of Blue Cap,
Imagine the company you work for is running huge deficits and can’t pay all its bills. Even worse, the leaders of the
company are in the middle of a very public battle that you can read about in the newspaper every day. Let’s say you
have not had a raise in nearly nine years and your family’s bills are always creeping higher. Is this a good time to ask
for a raise?
Well, the State of Illinois is the deficit ridden company that pays the “Blue Cap Family” to provide services and supports to very vulnerable people. Yet every day, due to the state budget crisis, Blue Cap itself becomes more vulnerable.
Though our reimbursements from the state are frozen at 2007 levels, our costs are definitely in 2016! On top of that,
the needs of people and their families seem to grow ever greater. And as we go further down the road, the state’s
comptroller says the deficits are growing so big that the delays to payments will have to grow worse as well.
You are part of the “Blue Cap Family” and we are extraordinarily grateful for that fact. Without your continued support, Blue Cap would be unable to weather the current crisis and carry on in providing exceptional services and supports to families who daily face their own great challenges. Not a day goes by that the community’s support of Blue
Cap fails to make a difference.
I hope this note does not begin to sound like the fable of the shepherd boy crying “wolf.” The seemingly never ending
state mess is an ever building challenge that Blue Cap and all social service providers are facing. In light of that, Blue
Cap is ever grateful for all you have done and continue to do!
Thanks for Supporting Our Journey,
Tony
Candlelight Bowl Fundraiser to Benefit Activities
Nothing beats a Candlelight Bowl when looking for a fun night out!
Mark your calendar to attend the Blue Cap Family & Friends Association
Candlelight Bowl at Orland Bowl, 8601 West 159th Street in Orland Park
on Saturday, April 9. Come join us to enjoy food and four games of
scotch doubles bowling including Crazy Bowl, Regular, Low Ball and 9Pin No-Tap for just $30 per person or $50 per couple. Throughout the
evening, raffles and split the pots will take place with a chance to win an
iPad Air or a mountain bike.
Your support of the Family & Friends changes the lives for the individuals in Blue
Cap’s Programs throughout the entire year. In an earlier issue of the Blue Cap
Review, we shared a story about our
new Canal Club Activity Center
and all the fun things happening
there. In 2015, the Family &
Friends committed its support of
the Canal Club and all of the fun
activities there by making a
monthly pledge. By participating

Bash at Blue Cap Sends Student and Her Family to Disney
On December 8, Aryn Robinson,
a student in Blue Cap’s School
Program, saw her dreams come
true courtesy of the Make-A-Wish
Foundation when she, her family
and her nurse were presented with
a 6-day trip to Disney World,
which also included memorable
stops at Universal Studios and
SeaWorld.
Aryn was born with Smith-LemliOpitz Syndrome, a rare genetic
disorder. She began attending Blue
Cap in the School Program at age 3,
and now at age 7 she continues to
thrive and grow.
Blue Cap threw Aryn and her family
a send-off party to remember. Two
volunteers from Make-A-Wish
Foundation presented Aryn and her
family their
“proclamation” and
played a video message
from Anna, a character
from her favorite movie
“Frozen” while everyone
at Blue Cap looked on
and celebrated. “I was
ecstatic to hear when
Aryn and her family were
selected to go to Disney
World! The family had
never been and to see

opportunity to visit the
most wonderful place to have fun in
the sun was great!” said Ekeshia
Pickens, Aryn’s teacher at Blue Cap.
She added, “I hope more of our
students get to go because it helps
them interact and see a place that is
filled with fun and laughs!”

We are sure Aryn lit up all of Orlando
with her infectious little smile just like
she does for us every day here at Blue

Get Ready to Tee off “Fore” Blue Cap Foundation
The 22nd Annual Blue Cap Foundation Charity Invitational will kick off with a 9 a.m. shotgun start at Silver Lake
Country Club on June 15, 2016. The Charity Invitational will be an event to remember with chances throughout
the day to win amazing prizes. In fact, this year’s big raffle will feature a drone. Don’t miss out on this event
where we promise to have you home by the exact time you end your workday!
The Charity Invitational tributes its great success over the years to the work of a dedicated committee. Have you
attended the outing year after year or just enjoy golf and would like to help with the planning of a memorable
event for a good cause? Call Jill Hart, Director of Community Relations, at Blue Cap at 708.389.8137 Ext. 108.

United Way Holds Adopt-A-Family Event at
Blue Cap Instructional Center
Blue Cap opened its doors to assist the United Way of
Metropolitan Chicago and The South-Southwest Suburban
United Way with the annual United Way Adopt-A-Family
Holiday Party and giveaway. The United Way contacted the
Blue Island and Robbins School Districts to identify families
in need for the holidays. They then matched 150 families with
businesses and community
members who were willing to
help by sponsoring an
“adopted” family’s wishes for
Christmas.
United Way volunteers sorted through gifts for 150 recipient
families.
On December 17, 150 local
families came to Blue Cap’s Instructional Center to see their holiday wishes come
true. The United Way threw a party to remember for the recipient families. Santa

support of his community.
Giving Tuesday Donations Doubled
On December 1, Blue Cap
joined in on The Coleman
Foundation’s #IL Give for
Giving Tuesday Matching
Grants Program. Giving
Tuesday is a day set aside
globally for charitable
awareness and giving.
Armando, a student in Blue Cap’s School
Program, launched the campaign with his
winning smile.
Through a vigorous Facebook
campaign, we were able to attract
22 new donors who were excited
about the opportunity to double
their impact. In total, 49 donors
helped us to raise nearly $25,000
with the match all in just one day!
A warm thank you goes to The
Coleman Foundation and Blue
Cap’s donors for joining the global
effort to spread so much good.
Aryn, early childhood student at
Blue Cap, sends her thanks for all
the generosity.

Tag Days Set for August
19-20 with New Sponsor
Blue Cap Foundation will be holding its Annual Tag Days fundraiser with new sponsor,
Albanese World’s Best Candy Factory located in Merrillville, Indiana, on Friday, August 19 and Saturday, August 20, 2016. Albanese has generously offered to donate
enough gummie bears to hand out to every
generous donor throughout the 2-day event.
We are currently seeking outgoing people
who are interested in volunteering individually or as a team captain to host a group of
volunteers. Volunteer sites will be throughout Chicagoland. The more volunteers who
come out to help, the easier it will be to
reach our goal of raising $15,000 to support
the Blue Cap Foundation.
For many years the Tag Days event was sponsored by
Ferrara Pan Candy Co. through the generosity of Sal
Ferrara. It is in his memory that we hold this event year
after year.

Wintertime Around Blue Cap
Groundhog Day, February 2, was nice and cloudy
and Punxsatawny Phil didn’t see his shadow. This
means an early Spring is just around the corner.
The Senior Program at Blue Cap saw this as reason to celebrate! With the help of staff, the seniors baked “groundhog” cupcakes and got started
on some indoor planting in preparation for
Spring.
Angie (left) and Hugh (right) eat their “groundhog” cupcakes with Tasha
McDaniel, Senior Program Coordinator.
17 Seniors with intellectual and developmental disabilities enjoy retirement or semi-retirement in the
Senior Program.
The week of January 25, the School Program participated in National School Choice Week to help shine a
positive spotlight on the most effective education options for every child.
We joined the nationwide movement by
sharing pictures and messages on Facebook
in support of parents and guardians having
the right to choose the best course of education for their children.
At Blue Cap, we believe in advocating for
our own rights.

School Choice Week.
Blue Cap’s 22nd Annual Auction fundraiser was held
at the DoubleTree in Alsip on November 5, 2015.
Over 200 attendees and nearly 40 volunteers came
out to support our biggest fundraiser. Each year during the live auction at the event guests are invited to
bid on a Special Project. This year’s Project focused
on our newly created “Family Is What You Make It”
Fund, which helps Blue Cap support individuals who
have no family support. With the support of the donors at the event, we were able to start out the fund

holiday gifts and also help a student in our school and an individual in adult services with dental needs.
Going forward, the Fund will touch the lives of countless individuals at Blue Cap. Look for updates in
future issues of the Review.

A Place to Celebrate
Spring is almost here and it’s not too late to place a brick, tree or bench
in Blue Cap’s Celebration Garden. The Celebration Garden, located at
Blue Cap’s Instructional Center, is a great place to memorialize a loved
one who has passed away. But did you know you can also celebrate any
milestone or life event in the garden? The Celebration Garden was also
created to honor a graduate, celebrate a wedding, commemorate an anniversary or retirement or just leave a lasting tribute for any of life’s
milestones.
Each year at the end of May, all new bricks,
trees and benches are dedicated at an event
held in the Celebration Garden.
A tree that has been
planted to honor a retirement and a bench to honor
the memory of a long-time
Blue Cap employee are
part of the garden.
