December 20, 2015 - Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church
Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church
OUR MISSION STATEMENT
Founded in the good news of Christ that “God so loved the world that he gave (us) his only Son”
(Jn 3:16) and knowing that he (Christ) “came that we might have life — life in all fullness” (Jn 10:10)
and rooted in Jesus’ command to “Love one another as I have loved you” (Jn 13:34), we the members
of Christ the Redeemer Parish commit ourselves:
• To foster an understanding and sharing of Christ’s message
• To celebrate the glory of God in liturgy which recognizes our diversity and calls us
to oneness in God’s presence
• To challenge the faithful to respond to Christ’s call to meet the needs of all people
with compassion and charity.

THANK YOU ON BEHALF
OF THE THOUSANDS YOU HELP
WITH LIFE-SAVING SERVICES
WHEN YOU GIVE TO CATHOLIC CHARITIES
Thank you for your support of Catholic Charities this
year. Your support is vital to our work, and we are
grateful for your gifts of time, talent, and treasure. If you
missed the opportunity to give to Catholic Charities, you
may still do so. You can make your year-end gift in
support of Catholic Charities by going online to
www.ccda.net. Or you can make a gift in next week’s
collection and note Christmas Collection / Catholic
Charities on the memo portion of your check. All gifts
stay in the diocese.
COUNTLESS THANKS
CTR parishioners were extremely generous again this year as
they stepped in to help our neighbors in need. Loads of coats
and shoes were donated through our Religious Ed program for
the LINK Thanksgiving basket distribution. Through our
annual Giving Tree project, bagful after bagful of gifts went to
the Loudoun County Holiday Coalition so that low income
families could put gifts under their Christmas trees. You
donated checks and cash and groceries to help fill the LINK
Christmas baskets so that our neighbors are able to feed their
families this Christmas. You then remembered that there is a
great need for blood during the holiday season and you were
there to “Give the Gift of Life. Our gratitude goes out to the
many volunteers that organize and give their time to these
projects and to the overwhelming generosity of all the
parishioners.
DONATE YOUR USED CAR
If you are thinking of replacing your old car with something
new, please consider donating your old car to Catholic
Charities. We take used vehicles and give them directly to
families in desperate need of transportation. Donating to
Catholic Charities is easy. We handle all the paperwork and
you receive an IRS donation receipt. Avoid the hassle of
selling your car, simplify your life and reclaim that space in
your garage. To donate, please call 703-841-3898.
CHRISTMAS FLOWER ENVELOPES
Envelopes are available on the credenza and may be returned
anytime in the collection basket. Please print the names of
your loved ones clearly so that we can include them in the
bulletin.

“And how does this happen to me,
that the mother of my Lord should come to me?”
The Spirit of the Lord came over Mary and she conceived
the child of God. That same Spirit fills her cousin
Elizabeth, who shares our wonderment and surprise: Jesus
Christ, Emanuel, God with us.
How does Christ come to be with us? Why does the
church celebrate the sacraments of initiation to
welcome us into this family?
If you are an unbaptized Adult or have an unbaptized child
over the age of 7 interested in becoming catholic through
the sacraments of baptism, confirmation, and communion
or are from a different denomination and interested in

CHRIST THE REDEEMER CATHOLIC CHURCH
DECEMBER 20, 2015
December 2015
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus,
Each year, as you and I kneel before the Nativity scene, we see an infant, often depicted with his tiny arms
outstretched towards us. That moving gesture communicates a twofold meaning: Jesus desires to be held by us and to
hold us as well in love! Recently, Pope Francis wrote: “Love, after all, can never be just an abstraction. By its very
nature, it indicates something concrete: intentions, attitudes, and behaviors that are shown in daily living” (cf.
Misericordiae Vultus, n. 9). Our Holy Father was speaking about love in the context of God’s mercy. As you know,
he is urging us to reflect on God’s mercy in a very intentional way from December 8 of this year to November 20,
2016: an Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, as he calls it. “…mercy is a key word that indicates God’s action towards
us. He does not limit himself merely to affirming his love, but makes it visible and tangible….” (cf. Ibid.).
So, this year, as you and I kneel before the Nativity scene and fix our eyes on the Infant Jesus, surrounded by
Mary, Joseph, and the shepherds, we see in Him a very tangible and concrete sign of God’s love, His mercy revealed
clearly and unmistakably. The Infant Jesus is reaching out to each one of us: “Because you are loved by God Our
Father, I have come to be among you and to save you by my future dying and rising. See how much I love you: My
tiny arms stretched out towards you now and later on, stretched and nailed to the Cross.” Since the only response to
love is love, let us reaffirm our love to the Infant Savior, to be shown by imitating Him in our daily living and by
reaching out in love and mercy to those we encounter, beginning with our family.
Yes, we live in a world that is troubled, anxious and uncertain. The Infant Savior lying in the manger draws
us beyond every difficulty to Himself, because only in Him and because of His mercy, will we experience hope that
endures even unto life eternal. Let us respond to His love with open hearts and outstretched arms.
Please be assured that you and all those you hold dear will be remembered in the Holy Masses which I shall
offer on Christmas and throughout the Christmas Season. You will all be likewise brought to the Lord in daily prayer
throughout the approaching New Year. Please pray for me, that I might bring the concrete love of the Infant Jesus to
all those who are in my pastoral care.
Faithfully in the Heart of Christ,

In this memoir, set as deeply in his mind as in the
Southeast Asian jungle, a young American soldier embarks
on a journey to a war that, for him, will never be over.
The world was a playground for Mickey,
a naive Irish American kid bored with
his life. His father served in World War
II, his brother was a Marine in Vietnam;
now it was his turn. His 365 days in
Vietnam builds in torment until an
attack on a bunker complex in Cambodia.
Wounded, his friend captured, he
becomes a tormented survivor knowing
he is always just a heartbeat from death.
