On the Air Waves
CoHF has been blessed with a wonderful relationship these past few years with Money Matters Radio on WESO
970 AM radio. Our “Live Shout Out” has turned into a weekly program on Tuesdays from 8 - 9 a.m. This has
been a great way to educate the community on what is new with the Center and those whom we serve. Many
of our community supporters and business partners have joined the program to expand upon how the Center of
Hope contributes to the community. Money Matters Radio has sold their programming to a syndicated broadcast
company and the Center will no longer participate in the venue. We will miss this opportunity to advocate to
listeners over the air, but we look forward to other opportunities with our local partners.
Charlton Cable Access Television
(CCA-TV is funded through a grant by the Town of Charlton’s Cable TV franchise fees.)
Our beloved “On the Air Waves” radio show has now moved onto cable access with host Dick Vaughn. With
the help of this cable access show, the Center is creating memorable programs discussing services and issues
surrounding people with disabilities. The access channel serves cable subscribers with public, educational
and government based programming from all of Charlton and surrounding areas. Public-access television is
traditionally a form of non-commercial mass media where the general public can create content television
programming, which is narrow cast through cable TV specialty channels. Public-access television was created in
the United States between 1969 and 1971 by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
We are currently working on segments featuring the history of the Center of Hope Foundation, Day Habilitation
programs, Summer Camp and Let’s get to work! - Vocational programs. We are also working on a segment
involving Civil Rights and people first language. Air times will be posted on the Center of Hope’s website once
completed and scheduled for public airing.
Youth Works Program - Summer 2014
by Colleen Neely (edited)
The Center of Hope Foundation participated in a youth grant program called Youth Works, sponsored by the
Commonwealth of Massachusetts, through the Commonwealth Corporation and the Central MA Workforce
Investment Board this summer. Our agency was awarded grant monies to place 32 individuals from Southbridge,
MA in a total of seven job sites (three of which were the COHDH, WSDH, and SDH programs). The participants
were also placed at YOU, Inc. as office assistants, Camp Foskett and Cops N Kids as Counselors in Training (CIT),
Harrington Hospital as candy stripers or kitchen helpers, as well as assisted with transporting patients. Janitorial
tasks at Incom and landscaping jobs in and around Southbridge with DPW (Department of Public Works) were
also positions filled.
Before the program began at the start of July, applicants applied for the Youth Works program and went through
the interview process at the Center of Hope where they discussed their interests, reasons for applying, and what
their goals for the future were. To be eligible for the program, youths had to be residents of Southbridge, aged
between 14 - 20, and be below a certain income. Each individual interviewed was intelligent, professional and
well-spoken, which made the selection process very difficult. They all had their eyes set on their future goals;
Marine Biologist, Social Worker, State Trooper and Engineer to name a few.
2.
The program had a two day orientation (July 6th and 7th). Consideration of the individuals interests and current
experiences played a role in the selection of work site locations. The feedback from all of the work sites were
positive. One participant, Christopher Mendez, age 20, began his full time direct care position at West Street Day
Habilitation the day after the Youth Works program ended.
With the vast majority of the individuals now returning to high school or college, hopefully they have taken
something positive away with them from this work experience. Most of them worked hard to complete a portfolio
packet, writing what skills they have, what skills they need to continue to develop, what their dream job or career
is, and put a lot of thought into what type of employee they are and what they need to do to work towards their
dream job (ie: keep up their grades, apply for college scholarships and financial assistance, get a part time job, get
their drivers’ license and car, meet with their guidance counselor, etc). Having professional references was also
discussed and highlighted. The participants were told to use their supervisors from this program as a professional
reference. They also practiced mock interviews and were told what strengths they showed in the interview and
what things they needed to work on. They all seemed eager to learn and improve on their skills.
Thank you to ASPIRA, YOU, Inc, Camp Foskett, Cops N Kids, Harrington Hospital, Incom, DPW and all of the Day
Program Administrators, staff, and program members at the Center of Hope for making this year’s Youth Works
Program a great success!
My day at Summer Camp
(Jennifer Valois)
On August 14, 2014 I arrived at the Center of Hope Summer Camp located at Salem Covenant Church Camp in
Charlton to meet the crew from the Charlton Cable Access Television. It was a beautiful day and the first thing I
noticed was the sound of giggles and the sight of bright smiles on the group of volleyball players. Quickly, Ryan
Thompson appeared and introduced me to one of her staff members, Andrew. Together we walked the property
and Ryan shared information about her first connection with the Center of Hope. Her mother, at the time,
provided therapeutic horseback riding for the campers. Ryan’s role developed from helping her mom to taking
over the riding when needed. Later she became a camp counselor and now oversees the summer program in
conjunction with the family support trips and programs. She explained how many of our CIT’s (Counselors in
Training) have become full time employees of many of our day habilitation programs and vocational business
sites at the Center.
Although the summer camp has been going on for several years at various locations, for the past two years our
camp has been held at the Salem Covenant Church camp in Charlton. The program offers flexibility to families
covering the 10 weeks of summer. Some individuals come for the whole summer, while others pair this week
with other camps/services offered in the community or through the school systems. On average there are 18 25 campers enjoying outdoor activities, such as swimming and indoor options of games and crafts to coordinate
with the theme of the week.
This week’s theme - “Super Heroes”. Many of the children were excited about decorating their Super Hero Capes
and inquired many times if it was time. In preparation for the live version of the game “Clue” scheduled to be
played at the end of the day and for the “Field Day” events on the following day, capes and signs showcased their
teams’ special players and powers.
Many children took turns swinging on the swings and a few of the older kids tried to reach the leaves on the tree.
Others shared with me their favorite toy they brought or something they found while playing their game. It was
a wonderful day spent seeing the fun activities planned for the children and the joy each individual had playing
with their friends. A highlight for me, as well as others watching the day wind down, was seeing a little boy
run across the field to his father yelling “Daddy! Daddy! Come look and see what I did today!” Meanwhile you
could see his Super Hero Cape flying behind him in the air and his sign held proudly over his head. Spirits were
definitely flying high that day.
3.
Annual Golf Tournament
Originally, the Center of Hope’s Golf Tournament was planned for August 13, 2014 at the Heritage Country Club
located in Charlton, MA. Unfortunately, Mother Nature took over and a tournament of Boating would have
been better suited for that day. Marie Barse, CoHF Fund-raiser Director, and Heritage Country Club quickly put
into action a new plan to reschedule the annual tournament two weeks later. On this day, August 27, 2014 the
weather couldn’t have been better at 90 degrees and a comfortable breeze to offset the heat.
Sixteen teams gathered together to support our Special Olympic - Recreational and Holiday Giving Programs.
Our event “Hole in One” sponsors, Incom and Southbridge Savings Bank joined together in a foursome of their
own and won the Champion Green Jackets for the 2nd year in a row. Our event is designed for every type of
golfer. With a best ball outline, each player has an opportunity to shoot and the team selects the best playing
ball to continue. Throughout the day several holes added fund-raising incentives to help the team’s overall
game. A few of the crowd pleasers were the “Vegas Hole Double or Nothing” - bet an amount, hit it on the green
and win double your bet and “Hole-y-Craps” - roll a 7 or 11 and take a stroke off your game.
This year our raffle prizes were donated by twenty individuals/businesses which offered a variety of options.
Many had their eye on the wheel of scratch tickets, stainless grill and golf laser range finder. Our goodie bags
were filled to the brim with treats to tide everyone over until dinner, promotional items such as koozies to keep
their drinks cold and an extra set of golf balls just in case a few players lost theirs in the trees.
Overall everyone had a wonderful day and the Center of Hope would like to thank everyone once again who not
only participated in the event, but who may have donated and volunteered to help make this a successful day.

November 21st Thanksgiving Dinner Dance
It was a very busy day for everyone on the August 21st; CoHDH was also on the calendar for the cable access
channel to check out. Everyone was running around putting together the last minute details for the following
days talent show, as well as participating in their daily skills training schedules. A large group of individuals
were out and about in the community visiting Books & Beans and checking out the new exhibits at the Jacob
Edwards Library. Members were eager to share their day to day routines and expressing what they look forward
to the most during the day or week. Many mentioned swimming at Focus Fitness and the YMCA. It was great to
see the members enjoy the creative, fun, interactive and educational games being played in the “colored circle”
curriculums. One game of bowling helped bring “Human Rights” topics to the table to discuss when someone
knocked the pin down.
CoHDH dedicated their August talent show “Songs in Movies” in memory of friend and co-worker, John Hagopian.
Twenty eight people participated in one or more presentations of “Bust your Windows - Step Up 3, Achy Breaky
Heart, Pretty Woman - Pretty Woman, On My Own - Les Miserables, Tomorrow - Annie and Dancing Queen Mama Mia. The performances were filled with a lot of energy, fun costumes and special effects by Allen S. - the
creator of snow.
Thank you to all that planned, participated and supported this fabulous event. Our staging was organized by
Connie Galli & Shepard Hill Regional High School, Denise Camerano created & sewed our curtains for Chad T. and
Max M. to announce curtain calls, Art F. (our go-to-guy) created amazing backgrounds and props to entertain
us and our ticket sales team for getting the word out. $1600.00 was raised through sales of popcorn, fudge,
cupcakes by Sweet Creations by Bonnie H., drinks and ice cream. A special thanks to Pat Smith for donating the
popcorn machine and Diana S. and Staff for making and selling it. The money will fund new IPADs for additional
curriculum possibilities and possibly a charging station.

Quinebaug River Day Hab
So, how many of you know that the Direct Support staff at the Center of Hope are multitalented? We are so lucky
to have some of the most dedicated, enthusiastic, respectful staff here at the Center. Did you know many of
them are also very artistic?
In recent months many of the Day Habs underwent a painting makeover, and three staff at the Quinebaug River
Day Hab (also known as North Wing) decided to help make the space at their day hab more inviting by adding
their “artistic touch” to the newly painted walls. Jovani Melendez, Eric Olson, and Nelson Burgus, thank you
so much for going above and beyond your job duties! You have created a very unique and special area for the
program members you serve. - Colleen Neely
Vocational Department
Different businesses and organizations contact the Center of Hope to see if there are ways
we could benefit from materials they may have. In the case of our fire starters that is
exactly what had happened. Mole Hollow Candle located in Sturbridge, MA contacted the
Center for a potential job opportunity utilizing our packaging company, NORESS. While
we were there talking, they mentioned they had an enormous amount of “scrap” wicks
left over from cutting the dried candles off of their rigs. Our vocational team put their
heads together looking at other recyclable materials available to us and started making
a few samples of fire starters. Each test fire proved to be a huge success with burn times
ranging up to 2 hours.
Now is the perfect time of season to buy one or more of our fire starters. It is as simple as
lighting the bag, placing it into your fireplace, wood stove or out door fire pit and enjoy a
cozy night with your favorite treats. Bags are being sold for $1.50 and can be purchased
at the Vocational Department, near Pauline’s desk and Hope’s Treasures Consignment
Shop.

each. There will be an assortment of homemade crafts, baked goods, art and other items.

compulsions. Along with certain related disorders, it is now categorized in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual

The Senate unanimously passed S. 2449, the Autism Collaboration, Accountability,

reauthorizes the Combating Autism Reauthorization Act of 2011 for an additional
five years. In 2006, the law significantly advanced the science and practice in the
autism field by increasing the number, scope, pace, and coordination of research,
surveillance, public awareness, and professional training efforts. Thanks to this law,
health professionals are able to better serve people with ASD and other developmental
disabilities. The professional education on screening, diagnosis, and appropriate
interventions will greatly help to improve outcomes for millions of Americans.
