WOODSTOCK
elcome to the historic Woodstock Square, listed on the
National Register of Historic
Places. Spend a leisurely day shopping
Woodstock’s unique stores lining the
Square’s brick-paved streets amidst the
quaint charm of 19th century architecture.
W
the McHenry County government offices until the early 1970’s, when the
county moved to a new, larger facility.
Presently, the Old Court House and
Sheriff ’s House complex offer dining,
an art gallery, music academy and studio spaces.
Afterwards, enjoy an evening of fine dining and live entertainment. Then spend
the night to complete the experience of
all that Woodstock has to offer! You’ll find
everything from hand-crafted pottery, apparel, gifts and collectibles, toys, original
fine art, antiques, gourmet foods and exquisite jewelry, restaurants, live entertainment and nearby accommodations.
Throughout the year, the historic
Woodstock Square is the background
for many events, festivals and fairs,
summer band concerts and other
musical performances, a twice-weekly farmers’ market, car shows and
the annual Groundhog Days – celebrating Woodstock’s starring role as
Punxsutawney, PA in the 1993 movie,
Groundhog Day.
Two historic landmarks dominate the
Woodstock Square — the Opera House
and Courthouse complex. The Romanesque-style Opera House was erected in
1889 and once served as the city hall, library and fire department. Performers
who spent their early years on its stage
include Orson Welles and Paul Newman
among other notable names.
Not to be missed is Woodstock’s Victorian Christmas celebration that
begins each Thanksgiving weekend
with the Lighting of the Square held
the Friday after the holiday. The
Square glows from the thousands of
lights outlining the buildings and illuminating the trees in the Park on
the Square. Carolers stroll the streets
and horse-drawn carriages transport
visitors around the Square. Shopkeepers often provide refreshments
while you search for the perfect gift.
Today, the Opera House remains the cultural and entertainment center of Woodstock. Plays, concerts and performances are scheduled at the Opera House
throughout the year, including the nationally renowned Woodstock Mozart Festival
held each summer. Performance schedules
are available at the ticket office in the Opera House lobby.
We hope you’ll enjoy your visit to the
Woodstock Square and our community. We’re sure you’ll want to visit
often!
The Old McHenry County Court House,
a simple Italianate structure, dates to 1857
and the Sheriff ’s House and Jail were
constructed in 1887. In 1894, Eugene
Debs was held there for refusing to comply with a court injunction related to the
Pullman strike. The buildings served as
