P. Car park. At the top of Lizarrusti Hill, we leave the car in the car park, which is situated to the side of the
inn. We set off from there.
1. Starting point. With the Lizarrusti Inn on the left, we start to climb.
2. Wooden Fence. After crossing it, we turn to the right and carry on close to the fence. We will soon see the
GR 12 and 121 signs and we carry on along the line of ash trees.
3. Saroiondo. After reaching the peak, we enter the beech grove before us and carry on.
WHAT TO SEE
1. THE PARK KEEPER’S HOUSE
IN LIZARRUSTI
8. Lareo. With our backs to the Lareo reservoir, we venture into the Sarastarri beech grove, following the signs.
There are white signs, red signs and even green ones. As we climb up through the beech grove, we leave the
Sarastarri Cave on the right.
It was built in 1887 by the mikeletes (the Basque
militia), to watch the traffic between Gipuzkoa
and Navarre. This is why it is also called the House
of the Mikeletes. This place has become one of
the main entrances to the Natural Park in Aralar.
At present, the Aralar interpretation centre is
situated here and it also serves as a refuge and
a bar (closed for refurbishment; the information
office is situated at the crossroads in the district
of San Gregorio).
9. Sarastarri. With the Sarasta peak above us, we make our way to the Elorreta sheep pen and this is where
we take the GR, which leads from peak to peak.
2. L’EMBASSAMENT DE LAREO
4. Iraio. On Iraio Hill, we take a trail to the left and go down it, leaving the GR markers on one side.
5. Akaitzerreka. We turn left and proceed along the river.
6. To the left. With the big beech in front of us, we turn to the left, leaving Iruerreketa on the right.
7. To the right. We continue along the trail, which goes off to the right, with the Lareo reservoir on the left.
10. The Elorreta sheep pen. We leave the sheep pen on the left and continue from peak to peak.
11. Agautz. This well-known grazing area is 973m high. From here you can see the dome’s walls, which face
north, and the higher grazing land in Aralar… after enjoying the incomparable views, we follow the GR signs.
12. Paso de Agauz. Here, we turn left and come to the dome, descending through the beech grove.
13. The Aldatse drinking fountain. We carry on ahead from this watering point and we come out onto the trail.
From here, we continue on the right.
14. Downhill. In front of us there are two trails and we take the one on the left to go downhill.
15. Towards the right. We follow the path that goes to the right.
The Lareo reservoir was built in 1989, on the spot
surrounded by the Malkorburu, Sarastarri, Akaitz
and Alleko mountains, to ensure the ecological
flow of the River Agauntza and the supply of water
to the inhabitants of Ataun. It covers an area of
20 hectares and has a volume of 2.35 hm3.
3. COVA DE SARASTARRI
18. Towards the left. We continue along the path that leads downhill towards the left.
Qui s’atreveix a endinsar-se en aquesta cova? Té
una galeria i un bell pou, ple d’aigua neta i
transparent. Es diu que era l’estatge de molts
genis; també hi ha qui assegura haver vist aquí
a Mari, la mare naturalesa.
19. Martinsaroe Hill. At this point, we come out onto the main trail, turning to the left. If we turned to the right,
we would come to Enirio.
4. THE INTSUSTI DRINKING FOUNTAIN
16. Towards the left. We proceed along the path that goes to the left.
17. Straight ahead. We continue along the path that is in front of us.
20. Towards the left. We leave the main trail and follow the path to the left because it is the shortest way.
21. The Intsusti drinking fountain. After resting in the shade of the pine trees, we carry on ahead.
This rest area is in the shade of the pine trees and
there are several tables and a drinking fountain.
22. The Aralegi meadow. Here we follow the path that leads us to the right of the sheep hurdle, going past
Atxuripe. Along this path we will be able to see the tracks left in the stone by the old carriages.
23. Kobaegi. We leave the Kobaegi farmhouse on the right and continue along the trail that turns downhill
to the left.
24. The Errekarte drinking fountain. At this fountain, which is to be found between Ataun, Lazkao and Zaldibia
and which awaits those who approach in search of fresh water, there is a verse written by Lazkao Txiki. After
quenching our thirst, we will continue along the same trail.
25. Lasarte Hill. In this spot, where we will see a tombstone in memory of the two brothers who were killed when
the roof of the Intzartzu hut fell in on them (1876), we will proceed along the trail that leads us to the right.
26. Amundarain. Turning left, we pass in front of the Amundarain farmhouse and take the road that goes off
to the left, following the GR signs and leaving the road.
27. Towards the left. We come out onto the road that we see in front of us and then we proceed downhill
towards the left.
28. Mendiola. After leaving several houses behind us, we leave the road at the bend and, after passing close
to the Mendiola peak, we make our way down to the cemetery.
29. Steps. In order to get to the town centre, we take the steps which are to be found at the entrance to the
cemetery.
30. Paskualitturri. After coming out onto the main road, we turn right and come to the square.
31. End. The route ends in San Martín Square, where the church and the Town Hall are situated.
