GLENN FREY COME TOGETHER FOR LUPUS RESEARCH
Lupus LA's sixth annual "Evening of Love, Light and
Laughter” gala on May 11 raised more than $500,000 to
support the Lupus Research Institute, the nation’s
preeminent sponsor of innovative, novel lupus research.The
hilarious Jason Alexander of TV's Seinfeld hosted the
glamorous fundraising event at the Beverly Hills Hotel,
which featured a performance from Glenn Frey of The
Eagles that rocked the house.
Celebrity auctioneer Sharon Stone was a highlight of the
evening, helping to raise $200,000 from winning bids on
luxury items, trips and the opportunity to send 50 children
with lupus to summer camp. Golden Globe winner David
Shore, creator and executive producer of TV’s House, was
honored with the 2006 Loop Award presented by the
show’s co-star, Omar Epps. Shore's acceptance speech
included a video montage of the many times "lupus" was
mentioned on the popular medical drama.
"We have successfully raised over half a million dollars
tonight for lupus research, and we will not stop until we
win the fight," announced Lupus LA President Adam
Selkowitz to the star-studded room of over 400 supporters.
Famous guests included Rob Lowe (West Wing),Taraji P.
Henson (Hustle & Flow), Melissa Joan Hart (Sabrina the
Teenage Witch), Paul Rodriquez, Julie Benz (Dexter), Howie
"D" Dorough (Backstreet Boys), Rick and Kathy Hilton,
Shondrella Avery (Napoleon Dynamite), Shari Belafonte, and
Rex Lee (Entourage).
Also Honored: Renowned Beverly Hills dermatologist,
David Rish, M.D., who treats many lupus patients, was
presented with the Medical Visionary Award. Joyce Green of
the John Wayne Cancer Institute received the Michael
Wayne Award; John Wayne's son Michael lost his life to
complications from lupus and his widow, Gretchen Wayne,
presented the honor. Long-time lupus awareness activists
and Lupus LA founding members Judy and Mark Gutentag
received the Spirit of Hope Award. Kathleen and Wayne
Newton, Ann and Jim Gianopulos, and Marla and Bud
Paxson chaired the event.

Conference on July 8 was a resounding success, with
more than 160 people with lupus and their families and
friends gathering for the educational event at CedarsSinai Medical Center.

Lupus LA founder Daniel Wallace, M.D., and CedarsSinai’s Director of the Division of Rheumatology,
Michael Weisman, M.D., were hosts and two of the 10
lupus experts to speak at the free half-day seminar.
Topics discussed included what’s new in detecting and
treating lupus, how to participate in a clinical trial, and
strategies for adjusting to a chronic illness.
“After being really sick with lupus for two years, it was
nice to be out and about with the real world at this
event,” said participant Barbara De Witt, an LA-based
author. “Your event was well planned, well attended, and
got rave reviews—so enjoy a job well done!” Lupus LA
partnered with Cedars-Sinai Medical Center to host the
conference, which was sponsored in part by an unrestricted educational grant from Genentech/Biogen Idec.
