KIDS GO CRAZY AT CARNAVAL!!!
By: Kaylee Beattie, Allison Caudill
Students showed
their school spirit at the pep
rally on Friday, September
27th. Everyone was pumped
up and ready for the
upcoming weekend events.
As the band got everyone up
and out of their seats, the
cheerleaders stirred the
crowd with their dance
routines. Fall sports captains
also informed the crowd
about their seasons and
upcoming events. Everyone
“ooed and awed” over soccer
captain Patrick Mackenna’s
adorable question to Nikki
Dixon. After the court was
announced, the audience was
surprised with the student/

teacher “dance off” that the
cheerleaders organized. Although no one dropped that thun thun thun, Mr. Debias and Tommy LaRue were the dancing
stars. They were not the only winners though, seniors also dominated the class chant, drowning out every other class!
While Ship was winning 14-6 at the half, Greyhound fans were really excited to see the halftime festivities.
Alyssa Dalida announced the seniors raised the most money out of all the classes in the annual fundraising competition.
The girls on court were becoming very excited waiting their
turn to ride onto the field in the traditional Corvettes. Alexis
Adams, the 2012 homecoming queen, led the girls out onto
the field. As Kaylee Beattie, Allison Caudill, Gretchen
Diehl, Josslyn Howard, Ashanica McCardle, Rachel Nye,
and Hayley Ream lined up in front of the stands, everyone
anxiously anticipated the crowning of the queen.
The suspense was at its climax when Hayley Ream was
finally announced as our 2013 Homecoming Queen. It was
a really emotional moment for Hayley as she was crowned
by Alexis, who is her best friend and our previous queen.
Hayley was asked how she felt at that moment and she said,
“I can’t even describe how awesome of feeling that was
because she’s someone that I’ve always looked up to and
we’re so close. Being in the same position that she had been
in the year before was a great feeling.” Hayley was not the
only winner on Friday night. Our Greyhounds defeated
James Buchanan 28-6, ending the night with a bang! The
excitement wasn’t over with everyone looking forward to
the promising events of Saturday’s Homecoming Dance.
Raise the Roof!!
Saturday of Homecoming was a night to
remember at Carnaval de Ship! Seniors were both excited
and sad that it was their last Homecoming night. Freshmen
were ready to see what their first homecoming dance
would be like. As the music was blaring, popcorn was
popping and everyone was filling onto the dance floor
ready to have a good time. Students were dancing the
night away to their favorite songs and making memories
with all of their friends. During all of this excitement, the
Homecoming Court was announced and Hayley Ream was
officially presented as queen. After this, the court had their
special moment in the spotlight while dancing to

State Budget Cuts Affect Us All
By: Catherine Edwards
Budget cuts; two words no one wants to hear. Unfortunately for the students
in Pennsylvania schools, they have become a reality. Faculty and students alike
have felt the impact of them.
In 2011, Governor Tom Corbett slashed nearly $1 billion from Pennsylvania’s
public schools. The basic education subsidy was reduced by $550 million, Career
and Technical Education was level funded at $62 million, and other cuts to school
districts have amounted to more than $50 million. Many parents and citizens in
Pennsylvania were strongly against the proposed budget cuts; regardless, they still
occurred. While the 2013-14 proposed budgets have increased education funding
by $90 million over last year, a $766 million hole is still felt by all.
In terms of how the cuts have directly impacted SASHS students, former
superintendent, Ms. Carroll, says that, “The Shippensburg School District has
been very lucky.” She goes on to further explain how she and new superintendent,
Mrs. Bender spent countless hours, days, and weeks doing everything in their
power to save what they could. “Extra-curricular activities are very important to
me,” Ms. Carroll continues, “we didn’t want those to be taken away from the students.” The middle school was the hardest hit with
many programs and activities being eliminated or staff being reduced.
According to Principal Bruce Levy, the hardest part of budget cuts was having to cut staff. Not only have staff been cut, but classes too. He
hopes this will not negatively impact students, but it is “saddening” to have to cut classes and programs. For example in the last two years, Mrs.
Mowers and Mrs. Jackson have retired and their positions in the business department were not filled. Business classes taught by those teachers
such as Accounting and Career Exploration are no longer available to students due to state budget cuts.
A Transition in Leadership
By: Erika Rhinehart & Jon Kim
After working as a Greyhound, Superintendent Ms.
Kristen Carroll has now become a Chambersburg Trojan.
Carroll is the new director of pupil personnel services in
the Chambersburg Area School District. Ms. Carroll has
been SASD superintendent since 2009 and has stayed in
that position for four years. She also held other positions in
the district in the past. She will be greatly missed by the
entire Shippensburg Area School District.
Ms. Carroll and Mrs. Bender interviewed with the Maroon and Grey Today .
Ms. Carroll said that her position in Chambersburg will be different than Shippensburg because she will not be the boss. She also will have more communication
with students than she had in Shippensburg. She is proud of her achievements in our
district like balancing the budget with numerous cuts in education from the state
government.
Mrs. Beth Bender, former assistant superintendent has
taken over the top position of superintendent. When asked
about the transition, she said it went well; both she and Ms.
Carroll have worked as a team and that has helped greatly
in making a smooth transition. Bender said that the biggest
challenge with this big change is that Ms. Carroll will not
be here anymore. They have worked together since 2009,
but since September 27th that has changed.
The Shippensburg Area School District bid farewell to Ms.
Carroll and wishes her well in her new job!
“He bleeds maroon and grey.”
-Mrs. Bender
(about Mr. Strine.)
Since Mrs. Bender was promoted to superintendent, we welcome back Shippensburg Area Senior High School graduate, Mr. Matthew
Strine as assistant superintendent.. Many students are familiar with Mr. Strine because they remember him as assistant principal across the street at
the middle school or they had him as a teacher when he taught math in 7th grade on Team Acadia at SAMS. “His heart is in Shippensburg,” says
Bender. Living in Shippensburg, working in the school district in the past, and having kids in the area schools, makes Mr. Strine a great fit as new
assistant superintendent. Welcome back Mr. Strine!

Mr. Sites Returns to SASHS!
By: Hailey Bryett and Madison Torres
Mr. Sites, one of our art teachers, filled in last year for Mrs. Myers after her
retirement, and was rewarded for his efforts with a full-time position this summer. There
are many things students might not know about him. He recently also earned a position as
sophomore class advisor. He was interested in this spot for multiple reasons and while
asking him our questions, we found out more about our new art teacher, Mr. Sites.
Mr. Sites was motivated to become an art teacher because it has been a life-long
passion for him. This field always provided him with the feelings of “excitement, hope,
expression, awe, and justification,” Mr. Sites says. He wishes to educate his students and
instill in them these same aspects that art brings to him. The school board considered not
filling Mrs. Myers’ position and Mr. Sites feels very fortunate and thankful to be granted
the full-time opportunity.
Between this year and last year, there isn’t much of a difference in his
responsibilities. His class schedule has changed and he has added some new duties to his
list of things to do. Mr. Sites feels that teaching is a responsibility that must be earned and
teachers should improve and learn something new every day.
A little while after he took on the full-time job, Mr. Sites was given the
opportunity to be a class advisor. He sees it as a long-term relationship with the sophomores here at SASHS. Mr. Sites believes it to be an exciting
chance to watch the kids “mature and flourish” over the next few years.
One of his students from last year, sophomore Katie Eichelberger said, “Mr. Sites offered constructive criticism if you needed it and then
helped you build upon that.” Many students are happy Mr. Sites and his art classes have returned to SASHS and we look forward to seeing Mr.
Sites in the years ahead!
New Librarian at SASHS: Mrs. Maret
By: Erika Rhinehart
Many of you may be wondering who the new face in the library is. That face is Mrs. Maret. She may be new to
SASHS, but she’s not new to the Shippensburg Area School District. She was pulled up from James Burd Elementary
School to take the place of Mrs. Nollenberger, who retried prior to the start of the 2013-2014 school year. This left only
four librarians in the district instead of five.
“I’m building this
library for my
students. This is
their library, not
mine” -
“In the past, JA/LEX and other individuals
have made donation to the district libraries.
These donations are greatly appreciated and
I’m hoping more come in to create this
collection” says Maret.
Mrs. Maret had many new ideas for our
library and with the help of students we can
help those ideas become a reality. If you have
Mrs. Maret
a fine, pay it! With that money, more books
can be purchased to make the library as up to
date as possible. The library catalog can now be accessed from home,
thanks to Mrs. Maret’s new ideas. To access the catalog just go to
http://shipk12.follettdestiny.com, from there you just click on the
Shippensburg Area Senior High School link. That opens up the media
center resource page. From there, just log on with your student ID and
password. When you are logged into the library catalog, you can search
for, request, and renew books. Student now have 24 hour access to the
library catalog, so they do not have to wait until they get to school to
access the computer catalog. Stop by and check on our recently updated
media library.
“My goal is to get a digital database and
to get everyone using this new
web-based catalog.” - Mrs. Maret

SASHS Under Sugar Attack!
By Kaylee Beattie and Michal Monahan
Last year, it was our school lunch. I’m sure you can remember the shock at
biting into that delicious pizza only to discover it was now made with wheat crust!
Or maybe you were upset that the mouthwatering meatball sub you so craved for
lunch no longer included cheese because it exceeded your allotted diary intake.
This year, thanks again to our federal government, the battle rages on. This
time, it’s the soda machine in the line of fire. Although Mountain Dew and Pepsi
will still be sold, they will be sold in limited quantities. What’s the reason for fixing
something that most would consider not broken? “Health. Health is the big thing.
We are supposed to be an educational institution, and yet we sell sodas. It rots your
teeth, it’s high in caffeine and sugar. We sell five times that, more than any other
drink. That’s a concern,” says Principal Mr. Levy. So what will be featured in these
new, revamped, open-faced, healthy drink machines? “Life water, Propel, juices,
Tropicana, tea, and a small amount of Pepsi and Mountain Dew,” states student
council President Emily Stouffer. So how are students reacting to these drastic
changes?
There are many mixed emotions about the situation. Senior Seth Frey says, “I
think it’s a little ridiculous and it doesn’t make sense to me.” Senior Spencer Van
Scyoc is on the other end of the spectrum. He states, “It’s a great idea! You can’t be
drinking soda and get a body like mine!” The controversial topic of the soda
machines endures throughout the high school, in hopes that it brings positive
change.

Guess the Teacher!
By: Morgan Newell and Kylee Miller
Believe it or not, the boy in the picture is a faculty member here at SASHS. This
teacher was born on May 23, 1984. He graduated from Forest Hills Senior High School
and then went on to Shippensburg University to graduate with a teaching degree. He
enjoys the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and playing or watching sports. He likes to eat
everything, but really enjoys meatloaf the most. Who is this teacher?
If you have any ideas to who this teacher is, WRITE YOUR NAME, GRADE,
AND GUESS ON A PIECE OF PAPER and drop off to Mr. Peters in room 20.
Correct guesses will be put in a drawing for a chance to win an exciting and awesome prize from the newspaper staff.
Good Samaritan
By: Hailey Bryett
Senior, Luke Maclay, received the Maroon and Grey Today’s first Good
Samaritan Award of the new school year! Mrs. Lopez nominated him for his
amazing ability to volunteer so selflessly at a young age and go out to help those in
need. Almost every Tuesday night for the past four years, Luke has travelled to Safe
Harbour in Carlisle where he works with the homeless children. There, he helps to
plan activities, tutor the kids with their homework, and serve them snacks.
Luke said, “It feels good to be appreciated by our advisor and chosen out of
many other volunteers who are also members of the club.”
SHINE (Student Helpers Inspiring New Energy) is a club at SASHS that you can
join to help out at the homeless shelter. With everything Luke has done with SHINE
for the past four years, we can only imagine how great it would feel to be recognized
for doing something so wonderful!
Reporter Hailey Bryett, Luke Maclay, and Mrs. Lopez
Last Christmas, Luke and the other members of SHINE gave small presents to
each child of the homeless shelter. Luke said, “Seeing their appreciation for the
smallest things is really inspiring.” Think about that; waking up to no presents on
Christmas morning or not having a family there to share the day with you. Nothing is
more important than the love you feel around the holidays and Luke helped those
kids truly enjoy last Christmas!
As well as helping during the holiday season, Luke volunteered during the summer. One or two times a month for two hours at a time, SHINE would
visit the shelter. If anyone is interested in joining this club, it is every Tuesday night. You could attend the club meetings or talk to a member.

Greyhound Football looks to “Turn Up” the Heat
By Morgan Newell and Kylee Miller
After last year’s Mid Penn Colonial Championship, expectations are high, but the
Greyhounds stumbled out of the gate with a 0-2 start. The good news is there’s plenty
of season ahead including most of the Colonial Division schedule.
Quarterback Seth Frey hands off to William Burt in the first half against JB.
Many of the senior players have positive thoughts on the season. Quarterback
Seth Frey is pretty excited about the season and believes his line worked hard all off
season with a lot of skilled positions to get better. Seth has kept a positive attitude
saying “Things are looking up.” Running back William Burt said, “We have to forget
about weeks 1 and 2. We have a lot more regular season games and more to prove,
we have an opportunity. Forget about weeks 1 and 2, keep moving forward, and keep
working hard.” After the slow start, the Greyhounds pulled it together and beat both
Northeastern and West Perry before the Homecoming showdown with JB.
The boys learned many things from the opening game loss against CD East. Wide receiver Storm Fridinger said, “It’s a bad feeling, and I don’t want it to happen again and
we learned a lot from that game.” Burt felt similar about the loss “Just the feeling of letting everybody down at home again, we had a pretty good turnout in the student section
and have to play better for them.” Seth said, “It’s a long season, learned quick week 1 that we need to prevent that from happening again, working hard every week.” William
believes that the biggest threat on the schedule was CD East, so hopefully the Greyhounds continue to ‘turn up’ the heat against the other teams after their 21-0 confidence
building victory over West Perry.
The senior boys expect a lot this season. Burt wants to win the division again and Frey said, “We want to go further than any other team we’ve ever been a part of. We’ve
worked harder than any team I’ve been a part of and that gives us a lot of hope.” Burt feels that Ship football has been a tradition lately and he wants to keep carrying the
tradition proudly. He and the team don’t want to be just as good as last year, “We want to keep raising the bar.”
Some different players who are stepping up this season are Nick Morris and Jared Heberlig at tackle, and Cade Myers and Tim Hart at guard. Michael McCleary is replacing
Robbie Keyes at linebacker, while Mason Cramer is at defensive tackle, and Dylan Herb and Elijah Harris replaces Tyrell Kater and Tony Johnson in the backfield behind Frey.
Even though the Greyhounds lost a lot of talent, the team has hopeful expectations, including bringing the Colonial Division championship trophy and LBJ back to Ship!
Hounds Soccer Looks for Division Title
By: Nick Strait
Shippensburg boys’ soccer opened their season with a rough start by
losing both of their games. However, they quickly rebounded and got
their season rolling again by beating their rival Big Spring.
This season for the Hounds will be different from any in the past. It
is the first time coach, Warren Jones, has had 15 seniors. “It’s the most
depth we’ve had in a long time,” stated Jones. When asked about the
key players on the team, he said, “With 15 seniors we have a lot of solid
players.” It is clear that he expects big things from his senior boys this
year. However, he did mention a few of the key players on the team:
Levi Varner, Nick Strait, Patrick McKenna, Ben Shoemaker, Nathan
Holtry, Ryan Boone, Dan Garling, and Matt West. These important
players will hopefully aid the team in achieving Jones’ goal of winning
the division and making playoffs.
The Greyhounds have not won the division title since 2008 and have
not made playoffs since 2010. In spite of having 15 seniors, these goals do not come without a challenge. Jones said his biggest problem this year is defense,
“We need to turn the defense around. Two years ago we lost most of our starting defenders. This group just hasn’t peaked yet.” Nevertheless, Jones believes
the boys will have a successful season and reach playoffs, the team just needs to “peak at the right time.”
Patrick McKenna, a senior captain, was asked about his role on the team and thoughts on the season. “As a captain I try to lead the team by being a
role model and coach while on the field. I would like to go 18-0 and reach playoffs, but I have a personal goal of 10 goals and 10 assists for the season.”
Likewise, Matt West, a sophomore starter, would like to go 18-0 as well as mentor the underclassmen and build a
strong team for future seasons. The team opened their season with a tournament at Oley Valley. The Hounds were
the two time defending champs at this tournament. Unfortunately, they went 0-2, losing the first game to Daniel
Boone 4-1 and the second to Oley Valley 5-0. The resilient Hounds quickly rebounded, winning their first two division games. They beat a strong James Buchanan team 4-1 and arch rival, Big Spring 3-0.
On September 9th, Levi Varner and Matt West kept the goals rolling in against a talented East Penn squad.
The Hounds battled hard for a 3-2 win over the Panthers. Shippensburg looked to keep the momentum going with
one of the biggest games of the year, Gettysburg. Gettysburg is the defending division champs and Ship was
looking to dethrone them this year. Unfortunately, the Hounds lost 4-1. Later that week the Hounds played in the
Greencastle tournament.
Levi Varner is third
in the state for
scoring with 19 goals.
Keep up the good
work Levi!
They won both games and the entire tournament. They beat a solid Bermudian Springs team 4-0 and New Oxford 8-0. Levi Varner leads the Hounds
in goals with 19 and Nathan Holtry leads the team in assists with 6. The boys are currently 10-4 overall and 6-2 in the Colonial Division.
Congratulations to Boy’s Head Soccer Coach Warren
Jones on his 200th career coaching victory! It came on
September 14th in a win over New Oxford!

Girls Soccer Kicks it Into the Fall Season
By: Kaylee Beattie
The girls’ soccer team came into this fall
season with high expectations. Although the
first few games were disappointing, the girls
have been keeping their heads held high and not
letting up in any games. This paid off, in the
Greencastle Blue Devil Tournament when the
girls took 2nd place due to goal differential.
With seven returning seniors to lead the team,
the girls have been working hard to stay
positive and continue to play to the best of their
ability. “Our biggest expectation this season is
to have a better season than we had last year,
have a winning record; it’s very possible if we
concentrate on the goals we have set ahead of
us,” said returning head coach Mary Miller.
First year assistant coach Jacey Kelley
stated that her biggest expectation for this year
is “Improving upon everything we teach the team at practice and everything Mary taught last year.” With seniors Brandi Spear, number 27, and
Rachel Nye, number 25, leading the team in scoring goals, the team is not holding back. “My biggest goal is to go to playoffs with the team,” says
Brandi. Although Rachel takes a different stance by saying her biggest goals are “To be really close as a team, celebrate every victory together,
work hard after a loss and have fun as a team”. The girls are working hard to meet their main goal, winning games. A lot of the girls’ struggles this
year are in their defensive line. Although they have seniors Kaylee Beattie, Rachel Wood, Liz McCurdy and junior Jordin Shives stepping up and
taking control on defense. Senior Cecilia Piper, says she is “most excited for senior night” which was Saturday, October 5th at SU.
Senior Soccer Girls
Field Hockey Rolling to Victory
By: Gretchen Diehl
After a tough season last year, the girl’s field hockey team looks
hopeful and won their first couple games. The new head coach, Coach
Angie Norieka, is preparing her team to have a successful season. She has
a lot of previous experience as a player and coach and was even once the
assistant coach at Wilson College. Coach Norieka said, “The team worked
really hard in the pre-season and are really dedicated which makes me
think we can improve our record from last year.” After losing a lot of
talent from last year, the two seniors Lauren Smith and Janay Hamilton,
have really stepped up to lead their team to success. The junior players
are very strong this year including: Allyson Fetter, Hannah Wyrick, Drew
Lovett and Denice Lovett, and Lexi Wolfe
The field hockey team started out strong with a 5-1 victory against East
Pennsboro and is continuing their success with victories against
Waynesboro and Big Spring. Janay Hamilton said, “We played with
confidence and courage, which led us to a victory against Big Spring.”
With a late goal against Gettysburg, they were not able to comeback in the
end leaving the score 2-1. This only made them come out better and
Seniors Janay Hamilton and Lauren Smith with head coach
stronger in their next game against Greencastle, while tied at halftime, they ended with
Angie Norieka and assistant coach Heidi Brandt
teamwork and determination, and defeated the Blue Devils, 6-2.
As they continue their season, field hockey has big plans for their team including a possible spot in the District III playoffs. Coach Noreika
said, “It’s not so much about the wins and losses, but a successful season to me is everyone coming together as a team. I am aiming for great things
with this group!”

Digging Into the 2013 Volleyball Season
By: Sheyenne McCulloch
The 2013 SASHS volleyball team looks to youth and athleticism in
reaching success this year. This year’s volleyball team only has one senior,
Jordan Kent, so they have to lean on other strong key players such as junior
Amanda MacLaughlin, junior Alyssa Dalida, and junior Becca Davis to take
leadership roles. First year Coach Suwan Kongkeattikul states, “We are just
going to take one game at a time and absorb and gain experience as much as
possible.” His tactic for this year is to treat every team as their biggest
competition and to not underestimate any of their competitors.
Mr. Kongkeattikul is our school’s new head volleyball coach and
will be able to give the girls great building blocks to succeed. According to
the coach, “Even though I’m the new head coach here, I coached
volleyball for 14 seasons at Scotland School for Veterans Children as the
head coach, so I come here with the experience needed to build a solid
volleyball program.” Coach Kongkeattikul’s two main focuses this year are
to make his players great competitors and better people on and off the court.
Coach Kongkeattikul is staying very positive and upbeat for the fall
season. According to him, “We can all learn so much about ‘life’ from
being a part of a team in any sport. It takes quality habits such as
commitment, dedication, perseverance, and of all desire to be best at what
you do. So, it comes down to ‘you’ whether you’re willing to put that time and effort into it to better yourself and the team.”
Come support your school’s volleyball team at the Dig Pink, “Pink Out” match on October 8 at 7:00. All admission fees will be donated to the Breast
Cancer Awareness Foundation. So come help a worthy cause and support our Greyhound girls in their volleyball match against West Perry. Go Greyhounds and

On Your Mark
By: Emily Stouffer
New season, new coach and new athletes, this year’s cross country team is going
through a lot of changes and they are adjusting well. The boys have five boys going to
districts! The girls have five runners on their way to districts. Not only have they worked
hard on running and training, the cross country team has had to go through the big
transition of getting a new coach. Coach Mike O’Connor recently decided to volunteer
this year and the school found a new coach, Mr. Stan Line.
Line has coached in the past and last track season coached pole vaulting. He says
he
can see anybody making it to the post-season as long as they set their minds to it.
Although the team has not had consistency with their times, Coach Line hopes that it will
get better as time goes on. The team all agrees that they have enjoyed the season together.
The boys are graduating five guys this year and the girls are graduating two runners. The
team has met their goals of getting five girls and five guys to Districts!

Golf Tees it Up!
By: Emily Stouffer
Dedication and perseverance is what it takes to golf. Although our SASHS golf team do not have the best record, they
all worked together to get through the tough matches and achieve goals. Coach Brad Horgos said, “Most of the team has
improved since the start of the season. Almost the entire team has had improved scores from match-to-match with some
players actually setting personal bests.” The team fought through a hard season, but seem very dedicated to their sport. The
hardest part for golfer Zaen Miller was putting and Jared Kiem says it is either walking the long 18 holes or hitting the ball
straight. The goals for the overall team were just to play the best they could and have fun. They showed a lot of
determination during the season and had a good year despite their poor record.
Zaen Miller was the only golfer to qualify for the Mid-Penn Postseason Tournament from the Shippensburg golf team.
He was very excited to be the lone golfer representing Ship at Mid-Penns. Zaen hoped to qualify to districts. Although it
was tough for him, Miller believed that he could pull through and reach Districts. Zaen said that the team’s goals for next
year are getting more golfers to advance into the post season. Despite his best efforts against a tough field, unfortunately
Zaen did not make it past the Mid Penn Tournament, but that experience will help him get back next season!

Travis Ott Pitching his way to the Top!
By Morgan Newell and Kylee Miller
Class of 2013 graduate Travis Ott left the cornfields of Shippensburg this past summer to take the mound under the shade of Florida palms. As most of
us know, Travis played at SASHS for two years on the varsity baseball team. His average pitching speed was between 90-92 mph and Travis also beat his
brother Ricky’s record in strikeouts his senior year with 112.
Travis moved to Florida in June after being drafted in the 25th round of
MLB draft by the Washington Nationals. During a recent interview with the
Maroon and Grey Today, Travis said, “The only big adjustment I had to make
was being away from friends and family. Also, I didn’t have a vehicle there to
get me around.” Travis wasn’t really bothered by the sticky, hot weather; he
did all his running in the mornings when it wasn’t as hot out. The biggest
change from high school to the minor leagues for him was all the extra running
and lifting.
During a recent interview with Coach Dan Watkins, the Greyhound coach
was asked if he ever thought Travis would make it to the Minor Leagues.
Watkins said, “I wanted to make it clear to Travis that he didn’t have to be as
good as his older brother. I wanted him to relax and be the best Travis Ott that
he could be. Well, I guess he’s answering that question at a very high rate.”
Watkins and Travis both give a lot of credit to Leon Hoke who is the SASHS
assistant coach who focuses on pitching. He also played in the minor leagues.
Leon’s help during and after practices is what made Travis well prepared for
professional baseball. Mr. Watkins stays in touch with Travis weekly, between phone calls and text messaging. Mr. Watkins said, “I always touch base with
him before his pitching day and shortly before his outing.” Coach Watkins is very proud of Travis and how great he is doing in Florida. Travis gives a
quote to younger players that are interested in playing MLB one day, “Never give up on goals, even if they feel impossible.”
While in Florida, Travis has talked to some major league players like Wilson Ramos, Christian Garcia, and Chris Young. He has also pitched
against many big league players. Starting his young career, Travis has a record of 3-0 with an earned run average of 4.03 and 32 strikeouts which is very
impressive for a 19 year-old. SASHS is truly proud of Travis for his accomplishments in the Minor Leagues.
Are You Ready for Some Football?
By: Payton Fridinger & Jon Kim
The National Football League, the most popular sports league in the United States, has returned and it has SASHS talking. Students and teachers
show off their love for the league by wearing apparel of their favorite team and playing Fantasy Football. Five weeks have passed since the season
started, and SASHS students and teachers express their thoughts on the season, predictions, and which teacher would make a good NFL player.
When asked who he thinks will face off in the Super Bowl, senior Josh Forrester has the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos with the
Seahawks coming out victorious. According to Josh, the Seahawks are the best team in the NFL because of their overwhelming talent and strong
defense. “I’m going all the way” said Josh hoping to win it all in his fantasy league. He believes that Trent Richardson, running back for the
Indianapolis Colts, is the player that is going to really help him. “He’s going to do good because he’s on the Colts,” said Josh. According to Josh,
Mr. Kongkeattikul is the teacher that would make the best NFL player. His reasoning is “Mr. K, because he’s fast and really fit.”
Sophomore Wade Mills believes the Houston Texans and San Francisco 49ers will be in the Super Bowl with the Texans winning due to
their wide receiver Andre Johnson. For fantasy football, Wade said Emmanuel Sanders of the Pittsburgh Steelers is the best. “Sanders is stepping
into a big role this year,” he said, referring to Sanders becoming more involved in the Steeler offense. Wade feels that Mr. Mancino would be a
good fit in the NFL as a running back.
The last student interviewed was Laurell Killian, a sophomore. She says the Baltimore Ravens will win it all again this year no matter who
faces them. “It doesn’t matter, they’re going to win,” said Lauren who is very confident in her team. Although she doesn’t play fantasy football, she
says that Ray Rice, running back of the Baltimore Ravens, would be the best player on any team. Laurell said that Mr.Powell would make a good
running back in the NFL. Mr. Powell was an assistant coach at Shippensburg University and former head coach here at SASHS
Mr. Gulnac, a science teacher, picked the Pittsburgh Steelers and 49ers to be in the Super Bowl with the 49ers winning despite the fact that
he’s a Steelers fan. He explains that the Niners’ performance last year will be a huge factor into this year’s season. When asked about fantasy
football, he thinks that Adrian Peterson would be the best because “he’s just a beast”. Mr. Gulnac hopes to win it and count his cash!
The 2013 NFL season will be very interesting. From September to December, for many of us, it’s all about Sundays and Mondays and
maybe one of these predictions might be right? The only way to know is to tune in and find out.
According to Josslyn Howard, Nicole Baker, and Brooke Barrett,
without a doubt, Mr. Meixell would be the best NFL player as a
linebacker and be cheered on by his new bride, future
Dallas Cowboys cheerleader, Mrs. Meixell!

More than just a Music Festival, It’s an Experience!
By: Makiela Burkholder & Iva Shoemaker
One town, two days, 26 artists, and
thousands of people, 2013 marked the 10th
anniversary of the Uprise Festival in
Shippensburg and it’s much more than just
a festival.
On September 20th and 21st at our very
own Shippensburg Fair Grounds, Uprise
Festival 2013 was held, and it was bigger
and better than before. During Uprise,
people from across Pennsylvania, the
country and even out of the country, came
together to celebrate the word of God
through music, food and a number of other
activities.
Music and entertainment included 22
bands and to help mark the festival’s 10th
anniversary, Jep and Jessica Robertson
from A&E’s hit show, ‘Duck Dynasty’
spoke in front of the thousands of fans who
attended. The couple spoke about their 20
year marriage, how crazy Uncle Si really
is, and of course their strong Christian
beliefs. After they spoke, Uprise offered
Reporters Makiela Burkholder, Iva Shoemaker, and Kylee Miller pose with
meet and greet with Jep and Jessica to
Uprise Director, Mr. Scott Brown.
those who paid the extra fee to do so.
Of the 22 bands at the festival, founder of
Uprise, Scott Brown says, like many others, that he was most excited to see Skillet because he’s good friends with them and they definitely
keep Uprise “on the map.” Of course, along with the bands, there were other activities including a wrecking ball blow up, Q-tip fighting, a
petting zoo with Alpacas, chickens, pigs, and lots of good food and good company. Even though it rained most of the day, crowds still
flooded into the festival, making the 10th anniversary celebration of Uprise something to really celebrate!
Even though Uprise seems like an event that just ”happens” there’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes to make it all fall into place
every year. From choosing bands, to finding volunteers, Scott Brown says there are both challenges and rewards in making it all happen.
Choosing bands to please the unique crowds pulled in every year and keeping the goal of $50 and under ticket prices seems to be the biggest
of these challenges. However, hearing stories about the experiences of attendees and seeing people themselves is most rewarding according to
Brown. Even with many other challenges not even mentioned, Uprise has grown from a small festival to something bigger and better each
year. However, it’s up to us as the youth of the community to continue that growth. “Why not come support it? It’s in your own backyard,”
says Brown.
Steinour Rises at Uprise
By: Makiela Burkholder & Iva Shoemaker
Ever imagined performing in front of thousands of passionate fans?
Ever imagined opening for bands like Skillet, We Are Leo, and Tenth
Avenue North? Whether you have or haven’t, one of your fellow students
experienced it recently during Uprise!
Brady Steinour, a sophomore at SASHS, performed at the
Shippensburg Uprise Festival held at the Shippensburg Fair Grounds on
Friday, September 20th. He opened the festival on Friday night and was
followed by We Are Leo. We asked Brady how he felt and he said, “I’m
excited.” This was Brady’s third year attending the Uprise Festival and
his first year performing. Two members from Duck Dynasty, Jep and Jessica Robertson attended Uprise and spoke to fans about, their beliefs.
We asked Brady what he thought about them being there and he said,
“I wanna see them!” Uprise director, Scott Brown, described Steinour’s
performance as “great” and “awesome.” Shippensburg High School is
proud of Brady’s musical accomplishments!

Dear Champ,
Dear Champ,
(Advice from our Beloved Mascot)
What is wrong with the stupid heating and cooling system?! I am either
freezing to death or sweating like a hog! Like, can someone fix that?
Thanks. Bye.
Dear Champ,
I am not having fun in gym class this year and it is my senior year! Shouldn’t it
be fun? What could I do to make it better?
- Frustrated Senior
Dear Irked Senior,
In this case it is somewhat apparent that the physical education department has
no concern for the seniors to go out happy. Many seniors feel EXACTLY as you do,
12th grade gym is too serious and zero fun. In the past, many high school seniors
were excited for 12th grade gym because gym was more than you did the previous
years, it was exciting to play fun games with all out friends for the last year of high
school. Sadly, there is nothing you or I can do, so you and all the other seniors will
have to suck it up. Seeing as it is only a marking period class, the pain and torture
will be over before you know it! Hang in there!
Sincerely,
Dear Cold and Confused,
I understand that you are not pleased with the temperature. Remember
that we have a maintenance crew that works hard trying to control the
temperature for all rooms. If this problem is really bothering you, have a
teacher make a request to the office. Overall, the temperatures have been
much better now then they were in the beginning of the year. Still, if you
feel the same, plan out your warm and cool clothes for the week and bring
both to school, just in case.
Sincerely,
Champ
Champ
Dear Champ,
Dear Champ,
I am taking many taxing classes this year. I’m also taking classes outside of school and
participate in sports so my schedule is very busy. I don’t have any free time anymore and the
stress of it all is really starting to build up. I get an average of 4 hours of sleep per night and can’t
seem to get to bed early and get a decent amount of sleep. Is there anything I can do to help
alleviate the stress of it all?
Sincerely,
Exhausted Student
Dear Exhausted Student,
Wow! You seem to have a lot of stuff on your plate! My advice to you would be take a break
from all the stress. You’re the one that does it to yourself. There comes a point where you have to
decide what is more important in life. You need to balance out good grades, sports , sleeping,
eating and a social life. Don’t over do yourself…..life is TOO short!
We should have new school spirit ideas. We always have
the same ones for each spirit days and it’s the same stuff every
year. Why not change it up?
Later, Very Spirited Student
Dear Very Spirited Student,
That sounds like a great idea! Recently, Chambersburg
had a Homecoming Parade and a Powder Puff Football Game
for the girls! Every fall sport had a float and everybody was
super pumped for the CASHS homecoming game! If you think
that’d be a good idea or if you have any other great ideas you
could always go to student council. They will take your ideas
and hopefully help you out! GO GREYHOUNDS!
Sincerely,
Sincerely,
Champ
