Kyung Wha Chung

Kyung Wha Chung is recognised throughout the world as one of the finest violinists of her generation. A prolific recording artist, her dazzling and probing artistry has made her a much-­acclaimed performer throughout her fifty-­year career. Lauded for her passion, her musicality, and the intense excitement that she brings to her performances, Chung’s uniquely expressive interpretations of the violin literature have established her as an artist of the very highest stature.
Recent and forthcoming performance highlights include recitals at the Royal Festival Hall, the Barbican Centre and Carnegie Hall, and concerto appearances with the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, and in 2016 she opens the Verbier Festival with a performance of the Brahms Concerto with Charles Dutoit.
Kyung Wha Chung has recently signed an exclusive international international multi-­disc recording contract with Warner Classics, the first release of which is the Unaccompanied Sonatas & Partitas of J.S. Bach, for international release on 7 October 2016.
Discography Highlights
Kyung Wha Chung has recorded numerous award-­winning albums, and her extensive discography reflects the impressive breadth of her repertoire, with sonata partners including the likes of Peter Frankl, Radu Lupu, and Krystian Zimerman. She has made benchmark concerto recordings with world-­class conductors such as Charles Dutoit (Saint-­Saëns, Chausson, Ravel, Lalo, Tchaikovsky, Mendelssohn), Lawrence Foster (Saint-­Saëns, Vieuxtemps), Rudolf Kempe (Bruch), Kirill Kondrashin (Beethoven, Walton), Riccardo Muti (Dvořák), André Previn (Tchaikovsky, Sibelius, Walton, Stravinsky, Prokofiev), Sir Simon Rattle (Bartók, Beethoven, Brahms), Sir Georg Solti (Bartók, Elgar, Berg, Mendelssohn), and Klaus Tennstedt (Beethoven, Bruch).
The Complete Decca Recordings
Her recording contract with Decca/London started with her recording of Tchaikovsky and Sibelius Violin Concertos with the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by André Previn, in 1973. She then went on to record a further 17 discs with Decca between 1973 and 1988.
The Complete Warner Recordings
In 1988, she signed a recording contract with EMI Classics, releasing 11 discs between 1988 and 2000. J.S. Bach Unaccompanied Sonatas & Partitas
