Staffing Update
This week we have had a change
around and welcoming of staff to
our school to cover a number of
staff who are on leave. Aaron Ward
is replacing Beth Hector as Deputy. Aaron
has worked closely with our school over the
past three years assisting to develop flexible
learning programmes from his Regional
Office position and comes with a wealth of
experience from his last school, John Pirie High
School. Kaye McCauley has returned from
Long Service Leave allowing us to retain Anna
Gubbin to undertake Vanessa Secomb’s role
whilst she is away on long service leave. Gary
Pammett has once again stepped into Deirdre
Moloney’s role as librarian and Charmaine
Simmons has returned briefly to cover for Helyn
Southwood who is also on leave.
Intentions for 2013
As we have begun planning for 2013 it is
important for us to be able to work out student
numbers in the different year levels as it drives
both funding and subjects that can be offered.
To assist us in this process it would be greatly
appreciated if you could let me know if your
child will not be attending Maitland Area
School in 2013.
SA Public Teaching Awards
Staff from Maitland Area School have once
again been recognised in the SA Public
Teaching Awards.
Four staff were nominated for awards (Deb
Schwartz, Jackie Norman, Anna Taheny and
Vanessa Secomb).
Anna Taheny was successful in winning the
Regional Award for Inspirational Early Career
Teacher and Vanessa Secomb was successful in
winning the Regional Award for Inspirational
Primary School Teacher. Congratulations to all
staff and good luck to Anna and Vanessa for
the State Awards.

Book Week
Congratulations to the R-7 classes
for their Book Week Assembly
Presentations. Classes used puppetry,
live-action performances, video and
song to promote their favourite books. A terrific
Book-Week celebration! (Pictures and more
later in the Newsletter).
New Student Welcome
Year 6/7 Tuck welcomes our newest class
member, Caitlyn Wyatt.
We hope you enjoy your time with us at
Maitland Area School.
Three Way Conferences
Booking forms for this term's Three-Way
Conferences go out this week with interviews
held next week. Please take this opportunity
to talk to your child's teacher about his or her
progress.
The two Year 6/7 classes have a slightly
different format for their conferences, which
now follow the secondary model of booking
time with the subject teacher rather than the
home-class teacher.
These will happen on Wednesday September
5th in the School Library. We hope this will
provide a greater depth of communication.
Happy Birthdays
Happy Birthdays go out to Bradley (6/7S),
Layla (R/1/2), Mikayla (5), Ella (3/4MN),
Bethany (R/1/2), Jyden (3/4MN), Ella (R/1/2)
and Taylor (R/1/2).
Assembly Roster
Assemblies start at 2.30pm in the PAC and
feature a variety songs, plays, videos,

'Pirates of the Curry Bean'
On Wednesday August 22 we were invited by the
Maitland Lutheran School to view their matinee
performance of the very funny 'Pirates of the Curry
Bean'.
The MAS students thoroughly enjoyed the show, with
some excellent singing from the chorus and terrific
characterisation from the lead actors.
Well done to all the staff and students!

I urge you to attend on Wednesday September
5 as the night is a valuable tool to help maximise
student’s success.
Royal Adelaide Show Team
Sarah Townsend and the Agricultural Studies

CHILDREN'S BOOK WEEK ASSEMBLY
Friday August 24
Our 2012 Book Week Assembly was held
in the Performing Arts Centre on Friday,
August 24. Each R-7 class had prepared a
presentation promoting a favourite book, and
like each year, there was keen competition.
Students and parents were welcomed by
Librarian Deirdre Moloney who introduced the
Book Week theme - 'Champions Read' (very
fitting in this Olympic year!) - and our two
judges Caroline Brown and Loren Mills.
Award Winning Books
The Year 6/7T class introduced the shortlisted and winning books in each category of the annual
awards. Students read short summaries of each book's plot.

Class Presentations
Year 3/4 Norman
Year 3/4MN started proceedings with their
film promotion of Roald Dahl's 'BFG'. The DVD
had been filmed in the classroom and down
the main street.
Despite a few technical hitches the film
showed off the Year 3/4s acting skills with
great use made of masks.
Reception Edginton
The Reception class's book was 'Scary Bear'.
Earlier in the week the students had made
scary bear masks and attended a Teddy
Bears' Picnic.
For their presentation the students sang
'Going On a Bear Hunt' which had a very
scary ending!

5 Gubbin
Year 6/7T
They used live news reporters and puppets to
retell the classic story of the Dingo who traps
a Wombat but is tricked when the Wombat's
friends all ad 'useful' items to the stew.
They began their presentation with Charles'
movie that saw famous people promoting the
book. The students then sang an original song
'Caterpillar, Caterpillar' and used puppets,
and singing to illustrate the life-cycle of the
caterpillar.
The Year 5 class had a busy week filming
'Wombat Stew'.
Well done to Anna Gubbin and the students for
a beautifully made film.
Year 6/7 Tuck decided that their favourite
book was 'A Very Hungry Caterpillar'.
6/7 Salmon
The Year 6/7S students presented three books,
including 'Commotion in the Ocean' - a very
funny live puppet play, a PowerPoint and
iPod presentation of the book 'Farmyward
Hullabaloo'.
Year 1/2 Atkins
The Year 1/2 class re-enacted the story 'A
Surprise for Mrs. O'Malley.'
The surprise? Find alligators in the alley!
There were lots of masks and giggles in this
story, especially at the end when the alligator
eggs hatched.
Awards
Judges Caroline Brown and Loren Mills were
faced with a hard decision after such a varied
program, but eventually the Year 1/2A class
was announced runner up and the Receptions
the winner of the $100.
Lots of thanks to Deirdre Moloney for
organising the competition, to Caroline and
Loren for judging and to the Friends of the
Library for their prize donation.

Ben's Android App
Tim Tuck | ICT Coordinator
Year 8 student Ben Feutrill has been busy making
- and publishing - his own game apps on the
Android phone market. I talked to him about his
work:
How long does it take to make an app? The time
varies, but I can finish off a simple app in under
two hours.
How difficult then is it to make your own app?
That depends on the software. Some I have to
code for, others, like 'Piano Champion' and 'Linky's
Fruit Revenge' were drag and drop, so I didn't
write any code.
How did you get started? I thought about making
apps for the iPhone but I didn't have a Mac computer.
Since I did have an Android phone I looked into
making apps for them. The first one was fun so I made
more and published them on Google Play.
Year 1/2 Literacy Group
Vanessa Secomb | Year 1/2 Teacher
The Year 1/2 students visited 6/7T to see their animals.
Annabelle Smart
The year 6/7s have 5 animals, my favourite was Rex the
Eastern Blue Tongue Lizard. We patted Rex, he is gold and
brown. He had a blue tongue.
Henry Butler
When we were in the 6 & 7 class we looked at all their
animals. My favourite animal was the guppies because
they were cute little fish. I also liked Rex the Eastern Blue
Tongue Lizard but he looked a little bit scary. He was
melting very fast. There were fish as well and their colours
were orange and white. They had eggs as well but they
were still hatching.
Kira Davies
Rex the Eastern Blue Tongue Lizard has sharp claws. He has
a blue tongue, he is very fast. He is even very quick.
Oliver Linke
I saw an Eastern Blue Tongue Lizard his name was Rex he
belongs to the Year 6/7Tuck class. They have 5 pets, they
have a turtle and a lizard and eggs and lots of guppy fish
and gold fish too.
Zoey Schulte
Rex the Eastern Blue Tongue Lizard walked up to the edge
and nearly fell off the edge and Rex’s skin was coming off
and I saw Rex.
Harrison Geater-Johnson
We went in the Year 6/7 class and there was a lizard
called Rex the Eastern Blue Tongue Lizard, he was cool.
There were chicken eggs and they were cool as well. There
was a turtle called Shelly and a lot of fish. There were a
lot of guppies as well. We got Rex out and he came and
he climbed on me and he likes me, he licked me.
ÐÐ The Year 6/7 Tuck class added to its menagerie this week with the hatching of its baby chicks. Lots of thanks to Sarah Townsend for
setting up the incubator and checking the eggs on the weekend.

Festival of Music: Magic Millions
On Tuesday the 21st of August 24 students from
years 5-7 attended the Festival of Music Choir
rehearsal at Magic Millions, Adelaide. It was an
early start to the day with students meeting in the
bus bay at 6:15am but this didn’t stop our MAS
students from shining on the day!
400 Primary students from various SA schools
attended the rehearsal, which went for 3.5 hours
during which time students sang 14 songs from
memory, some with actions and many in three
part harmony! Congratulations to all our students
for their excellent efforts on this day, particularly
our grade five students who are new to the
program this year.
Highlights for the day included Brianna Schwartz’
beautiful performance of her solo song, “He
Aint Heavy”, which she will also perform at the
Festival theatre in September (congratulation
Brianna) and our lunch at McDonalds on the
way home. Thanks to Belinda Wundersitz, Helen
Moloney and Vanessa Secomb for supporting
students on this day and special thanks to Belinda
Wundersitz (Choir Trainer) and Diane Wheare
(Piano Accompanist) who have so aptly prepared
our students for this important event.Seventeen of
our students will represent MAS at the Adelaide
Festival theatre on September 11th. Tickets for
this concert can still be purchased through BASS
(either book online or phone 131246). We look
forward to a fantastic performance.
