Concelebrating Mass in the
great outdoors while on a
camping trip
Dear Reader,
Lent is a season of penance. But it’s also a reality check.
The “threefold cord” of Lent is prayer, fasting, and alms giving.
But we are exhorted to “pray always”; warned never to be of
those whose “god is their belly”; and threatened with damnation if
we do not feed and clothe “the least of these my brethren”.
So Lent is the opportunity our “nurturing mother”, the
Church, gives us to reflect on the reality of our lives throughout the
whole year, and to live that reality more intensely.
But Lent can also be another kind of reality check. With the
advance of technology, our lives are becoming more virtual; but are
they becoming more virtuous? We may greet the next app as “fantastic”; but is that only because it feeds our fantasy? We are more
“connected” to more people. But how deep do the connections go?
Lent is a time to “get real”.
We think books can help.
Of course, books are also products of technology. You can
become absorbed in a book just like you can become absorbed in
Facebook. But there are important differences between books and
ebooks. Your relation to a book is more direct: you can feel the
pages as you flip through them; see it on your shelf with its title
and author on the spine. There’s no battery to run low. It’s easier to
mark the pages. And for many, it’s easier to remember important
passages—“it was in the middle of a left-hand page”.
No doubt what’s most important is what books contain;
though even here we at Ignatius Press believe that what is true
(inner content) should be incarnate in what is beautiful (outward
form) . We try to make our books beautiful as well as durable.
So here are some elements of our own Lenten “get real” effort
that begins with this Lenten catalogue:
1. Our authors are real, not avatars. Meet Joseph Pearce on
page 7 as he tells you about some books he thinks are
transformative (i.e. make one more real).
2. I’m real, too, and I get a whole page of the catalogue to
prove it.
3. We have lots of new books (see pages 3 to 5), and classic
best-sellers too, that are all meant to help us live more
fully in the only truly real world: God’s world.
4. And we encourage you to get to know the real people at
your local Catholic bookstore. Amazon is very convenient and we probably all buy things there, even frequently. But do we want a one-world retailer? Have you ever
met, or even spoken on the phone with a real person at
Amazon? (And if there’s not a Catholic bookstore nearby,
Ignatius Press has a web site too, where you can buy
directly from us—which helps to support us—and browse
the best in Catholic literature.)
But we’re not neo-Luddites. We have some good films for you
as well (see pages 20 to 23). And most of our books are available as
ebooks.
Finally, Lent does teach us something about human appetites.
We all like to get more value for less cost. So we have some special
sale items in the catalogue.
May the Lord bless you abundantly in this Lenten season.

NEW SPRING BOOKS
Redeemed by Grace E
A Catholic Woman’s Journey to Planned Parenthood and Back
Ramona Treviño with Roxane Salonen
regnant at 16, Ramona Treviño entered an abusive marriage, which
ended in divorce. Wanting to help girls in similar tough situations,
she took a job as the manager of a Planned Parenthood facility. However,
Ramona began to grapple with whether she was doing women more harm
than good, setting her on a path to seek the truth, no matter where it might
lead. This compelling story tells of Ramona’s struggle to reconcile her
identity as a daughter of God with a world that sends conflicting messages
concerning the source of our dignity. It is the honest, heartfelt account of a
woman who, with the help of grace, overcame the wounds of her own past
while becoming an agent of healing for others.

A Time of Renewal
Daily Reflections for the Lenten Season E
Mother Mary Francis, P.C.C.
he Abbess of a Poor Clare Monastery for over forty years presents
beautiful meditations on the liturgical season of Lent. Revealing the
abundant treasures of the Liturgy, her insights into Holy Scripture illuminate the daily Mass readings in a fresh and inspiring way. These meditations help us attain the wondrous reward that a good Lent truly brings us:
holiness and a deeper union with God. Her reflections are profound and
timeless, not changing year to year, thus providing a lifetime of Lenten
meditations in one volume.

The Noonday Devil
Acedia, The Unnamed Evil Of Our Times
Jean-Charles Nault, OSB
he “noonday devil” is the demon of acedia, a gloomy combination of
weariness, sadness, and a lack of purposefulness. It robs a person of
his joy, and is experienced by countless people as depression, melancholy,
burn-out, or a mid-life crisis. Fr. Nault describes acedia as a serious, common spiritual problem, and he details the symptoms and effects of it, as
well as the powerful remedies for it, to help us be renewed in Christ.

“A must-read book! It offers most helpful and encouraging insights on a

Communion with Christ E
According to St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross
Sister M. Regina van den Berg
aint John Paul II declared that the great challenge for Christians today is
to become “the home and school of communion.” St. Teresa Benedicta
(Edith Stein) is a sure guide to attaining the communion for which every
human heart longs. This beautiful in-depth work examines St. Teresa’s life
and writings in the context of the “spirituality of communion”, providing
wonderful insights to help us grow in communion with Christ.

of philosopher and martyr Edith Stein, as relevant today as ever.”

NEW SPRING BOOKS
Radical Discipleship Consecrated Life and the Call to Holiness E
Cardinal Francis Arinze
ith 2015 deemed the “Year of the Consecrated Life” by Pope Francis,
this work is a very timely one—for this year, or anytime. This book is
a beautiful way for Catholics to participate in this Church-wide celebration
by coming to a deeper understanding of the consecrated life.
Radical Discipleship illuminates the vocation and the consecrated state in
the Body of Christ, beginning with a look at the origins of the consecrated
life in scripture and among the early Christians. It then reflects upon:
• The different forms this radical life takes
• The vows of Poverty, Chastity and Obedience
• Community life as it pertains to consecrated life
• The prophetic aspect of the consecrated life
• The impact of the consecrated state on the Church and on society
Radical Discipleship is a reflection, for both consecrated and laypersons,
that offers wonderful material for thought and prayer.

The Wife of Pilate
And Other Stories E
Gertrud von le Fort
hese three novellas from acclaimed German writer Gertrud von le Fort
display her mastery as a dramatist of ideas. The Wife of Pilate imagines
the slow, arduous transformation of an aristocratic woman, mentioned in
the New Testament, from a pagan into a Christian saint, as she is honored
in the Byzantine Church. Plus Ultra takes us into the high politics of early
sixteenth-century Europe, and into the soul of a lonely young lady at court
who knows she has attracted the intoxicating but dangerous attention
of the Emperor Charles V. At the Gate of Heaven takes the clash between
astronomical discoveries and the Roman Inquisition trial of Galileo as the
backdrop for harrowing reflections about man’s place in the cosmos.

THE IGNATIUS CRITICAL EDITIONS
T
The Ignatius Critical Editions
he Ignatius Critical Editions present a tradition-oriented approach to reading Western classics. While
many critical editions view literature through the lens of modernism and post-modernism, this series
offers critical examinations informed by the Judeo-Christian heritage as passed down through the ages—
the same heritage that provided the crucible in which the great authors formed these classic works.
Edited by acclaimed literary biographer Joseph Pearce, the Ignatius Critical Editions provide essays and
footnotes that analyze works in light of the Western tradition, allowing the reader to meet the authors in
their element.

Jane Eyre E
Charlotte Brontë • Edited by Jill Kriegel
ne of the finest novels ever written, Jane Eyre is also one of the most
misunderstood masterpieces of world literature. Whereas most modern
teaching of the text misreads or misinterprets Charlotte Brontë’s devout
and profoundly ingrained Christian faith and intentions, this critical edition
emphasizes the semi-autobiographical dimension of the novel, exposing
feminist critiques of the work as being woefully awry and illustrating Brontë’s
belief in the hard-earned, hard-learned blessings of sanctity and reverence.

Sense and Sensibility E
Jane Austen • Edited by Eleanor Bourg Nicholson
hat are two sisters of uncertain fortunes to do when the death of their
father exiles their family to live in the countryside of southwestern
England? Why, fall in love, of course! Through her deft unraveling of the
dramatically different romantic fates of Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, Jane
Austen displays her singular mastery of the English language and her equally
masterful invention of colorful and realistic characters. The author’s appreciation of what it is to be human, grounded in her deeply convicted Christianity,
illuminates the tale with special wisdom. In this, her first published novel, we
see the sense and sensibility of Miss Austen herself, which combine to form
the brilliance that shines forth in all of her works—a brilliance enlivened by
her remarkable sense of humor and the affectionate kindness that could only
be born of a gracious Christian spirit.

Othello E
William Shakespeare • Edited by Joseph Pearce
ne of the four great tragedies—alongside Hamlet, King Lear, and
Macbeth—Othello is among the darkest of Shakespeare’s plays, illumining the shadows of the gloomiest recesses of the human psyche and serving
as a damning indictment of the world in which it was written. A cautionary tale of the destructiveness of sin and the ruinous consequences of bad
philosophy, Othello seems to express Shakespeare’s rage at the cynicism and
brutality of the age in which he lived. From the Machiavellian menace of
Iago to the blind and prideful jealousy of Othello, this classic of world literature shows us the shadow falling over a society that has turned its back on
the light and life of virtue.

The Romantic Poets: Blake, Wordsworth and Coleridge
Edited by Robert Asch and Joseph Pearce
he word “romantic” has so many varied meanings that C. S. Lewis
quipped it should be deleted from our vocabulary. Yet, from the perspective of English literature, “romantic” is associated, first and foremost,
with the poetry of Romanticism, the movement that accentuated the
aesthetic value of emotion, human experience, and the majesty of nature.
In this volume the finest works of the first generation of Romantic Poets—
Blake, Wordsworth, and Coleridge—are assembled in an accessible and yet
scholarly manner, together with a selection of contemporary criticism by
tradition-oriented experts, in order to introduce these poets to a new generation of readers.

Ignatius Press has been
blazing a trail with the
publication of new Catholic
fiction which I hope will be
catalytic in the generation
of a renewed Catholic literary revival in the twentyfirst century. A Postcard
from the Volcano by Lucy
Beckett would be my pick
of the bunch. Superbly wellwritten by an author who is
steeped in western culture
and thoroughly knowledgeable of European history,
this novel should be on
every well-read Catholic’s
reading list.
Ignatius has also blazed a
worthy trail with its active
promotion of the works
and legacy of the great
G. K. Chesterton. One
thinks especially perhaps
of the painstaking publication of the Collected
Works. My Chestertonian
choice (apart from my own
biography of him!) would
be one of Dale Ahlquist’s
introductions to Chesterton,
such as Common Sense 101.
As an aficionado of the
great literary works of
Christendom, it has been a
true honour to be the series
editor of the Ignatius
Critical Editions. I would
unflinchingly recommend
any of the titles in this very
important series but will
single out The Merchant
of Venice, principally
for the simply sublime
critical essays which shed
priceless light on this so
often misunderstood and
misconstrued play.

Not God’s Type An Atheist Academic Lays Down Her Arms E
Holly Ordway
This is the story of a glorious defeat. Ordway, an atheist academic, was
convinced that faith was superstitious nonsense. As a well-educated
college English professor, she saw no need for just-so stories about God.
Secure in her fortress of atheism, she was safe (or so she thought) from
any assault by irrational faith.
But then something happened... How did she come to “lay down her
arms” in surrender to Christ—and then, a few years later, enter into the
Catholic Church?
This is the moving account of her unusual journey.
“Holly Ordway manages to dig into meaty intellectual topics without
losing the personal, relatable elements of her story. The result is a book
that has the rare combination of being both deeply intellectual and
deeply human.”

The Vision of Freedom That Tolkien Got, and the West Forgot
Jonathan Witt and Jay W. Richards
Anyone who has read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings can gather that
their author hated tyranny, but few know that the novelist who once
described himself as a hobbit “in all but size” was—even by hobbit standards—a zealous proponent of economic freedom and small government. At a time when many are concerned that the West is sliding into
political, economic, and moral bankruptcy, authors Jonathan Witt and
Jay W. Richards show us how J. R. R. Tolkien has, in his beloved novels
of Middle-Earth, drawn us a map to freedom.
“Witt and Richards brilliantly delve into the most profound depths of
Tolkien’s endlessly fascinating soul. This work offers us a true feast: the
feast of nobility, truth, goodness, and beauty.”

THE DIDACHE BIBLE
Why another Bible version and what does The Didache Bible mean?
First, this is not a new Bible translation. The Didache Bible uses the RSV 2nd
CE translation of the Bible (same as in the Ignatius Bible). It is called The
Didache Bible because this version of the Bible has extensive footnotes based
on the Catechism of the Catholic Church, a feature that is unique to this new
Bible edition. This Bible is a collaborative effort between Ignatius Press and
the Midwest Theological Forum, publishers of the Didache Series.
Besides extensive footnotes, The Didache Bible includes full color biblical
maps, 106 apologetical explanations to common questions, a comprehensive glossary and topical index, and two ribbon markers.

The Secret of Saint Thérèse
Called “the greatest saint of modern times” by Pope St. Pius X,
Thérèse of Lisieux lived a hidden life in a Carmelite monastery
and died at only 24 years of life. Yet, her “secret” of sanctity
has made her not only a great modern saint, but a Doctor of
the Church. She promised to spend her Heaven doing good on
Earth. Her simple spirituality, humility and complete trust in
God revolutionized the 20th century. Over 100 years after her
death she continues to inspire millions of people, help them in
their lives, and draw them closer to God.
This film tells the story of her life and message, intertwined
with the personal stories of twelve people from around the
world who testify to the great impact Thérèse has made on their
lives. Including very rare footage of the inside of her monastery
at Lisieux, we also meet a taxi driver in Rome, a famous radio
priest in the Netherlands, a wedding dress designer in Paris, a
teenager in Lebanon, a Protestant professor at Harvard divinity
School, a mother of twelve children in Nigeria, a stock broker on
Wall Street, and others, who share their moving personal stories
of how Thérèse, and her “secret”, has changed their lives. A
secret so powerful, it confirms her mission to “Love Jesus and
to make Him loved by others.”

Faustina Apostle of Divine Mercy
This award-winning movie is a beautiful representation of the
mystical life of St. Maria Faustina, who became the “Apostle
of Divine Mercy”. It tells the story of her mystical experiences as a nun living in a convent in Poland in the early 20th
century. It is to her that Jesus appeared and commanded that
she be his instrument for promoting devotion to his Divine
Mercy, and that the Feast of Divine Mercy be established and
celebrated on the Sunday after Easter. He also requested from
Sister Faustina that an image be painted and venerated of him
and his Divine Mercy, and asked that we pray especially the
Chaplet of Mercy.
The story and film are based on her own writings from her
“Diary”, which has become a worldwide best-selling spiritual work. She was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2000 as
the first saint of the new millennium. Actress Dorota Segda
received great critical acclaim by European film critics for her
stunning portrayal of Sister Faustina.
Film includes a 30 minute bonus extra of the “Making Of”
the movie.
In Polish with English and Spanish subtitles.

G.K. Chesterton on Saints Francis and Thomas
Actor and professor John “Chuck” Chalberg, who has been performing as G.K. Chesterton on stage and TV for over twenty years, gives
the best of Chesterton’s two superb biographies of St. Francis and St.
Thomas. His biographies on these two saints have been acclaimed as
some of the best ever written. Chesterton thought that every age has
needed the saint that contradicts it most. Ours is an age awash in
feelings and sentimentality; hence the need for St. Thomas, a man of
Faith and reason. Ours is also an age in which environmentalism has
become a religion; hence the need for St. Francis, a man of Faith who
understood that “nature” was our sister, not our mother. A fun, inspiring and insightful presentation of two of the most popular, and quite
different, saints in history.

including messages directly from Jesus to the seven persecuted churches on the nearby mainland. Entrusting the written record of his visions

among the Christians. These visions form the contents of the Book of
Revelation; the mysterious prophecy of Jesus’ return and a spiritual
