Now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the
Hegeler Carus Mansion is a source
of pride to the Illinois Valley. Located at 1307 Seventh Street in LaSalle, this architectural masterpiece, built from 1874-1876, is a key to the history of the Illinois Valley, the Midwest, and the
nation. Tour director Edna Olsen explains, “Visitors of all ages will experience a step back in time
and see the grandeur of the Victorian era.” The home remained a private residence until 1995
when the Hegeler Foundation was formed to protect and preserve the home. The mansion is an
example of high artistic achievement in architecture and interior design, yet also highlights
accomplishments in industry, philosophy, publishing, and religion. One hour tours are available
Wednesday thru Sunday at noon, 1pm, 2pm, and 3pm. Cost is $7 for adults, $6 for seniors, and $5
for students. Special group rates are available. More information is available at

a wonderfully unique landmark, stands proudly on the
corners of Columbus and Lafayette streets in Ottawa. This twenty two room Italianate mansion
has drawn attention for many years as a private residence, a public library and currently a public

This site, which is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, remains open to the

Streator is home to the charming country Tudor, the Weber House. Located at 1503 Baker Street,
owner Ted Weber welcomes visitors to experience themed rooms and extensive gardens. The home
was built in 1938 by his parents, Ernest and Zelma Weber. Ted Weber became a radio interviewer
for a Chicago station and had his own syndicated show. During his career he interviewed many
celebrities and was able to travel extensively. His travels furthered his appreciation of architecture
and art. Realizing the importance of preserving his family home, Ted Weber moved back to
Streator in 1983 and has made it his passion. Originally, the home had an ordinary yard and much
of the property was not used. Today, due to Weber’s dedication, the Weber House has uniquely
decorated rooms which are appropriately named for celebrities he once interviewed. Each room
reflects a different period design, with one room displaying a collection of Wedgewood china
given to Mr. Weber by Lord Wedgewood. The home now has a beautifully manicured English garden segmented into rooms. The original 1943 playhouse of the Weber children is still on the
grounds laden with classic toys. Mr. Weber, feeling the need to promote tourism in Streator,
opened his home to the public. However, he stated “I did this for myself because I always enjoyed
architecture and admired many things I saw as I traveled through Europe.” Open daily from 10-5,
tours can be arranged by calling 815-672-8327. Call ahead if the weather is questionable.

Built in 1848, this two-story stone museum
collects and preserves artifacts and relics that
pertain to LaSalle County history.
1875 Barn and Aitken School and
Blacksmith Shop
The Barn was originally built in the township
of Eden. This structure was systematically
disassembled on site and reassembled in
downtown Utica. The school was in operation
until 1954, it was later donated to the LaSalle
County Historical Society. The Blacksmith shop
was constructed in 1892 and was later
purchased and restored by the LaSalle County
Historical Society.

From June through September, the Norsk
Museum in Norway, IL. will be open Saturdays
and Sundays 1-5 p.m. The two-building museum
is dedicated to the Scandinavian settlers who
founded the Norway area in the 1800s. Contains
articles of Scandinavian life, such as dishes,
clothing, furniture and spinning wheels.

legendary frontier scout and US Marshal “Wild
Bill” Hickok.
Middle Eastern Conflict Wall Memorial

This beautiful granite wall honors fallen men and
women who have served during Middle Eastern
conflicts. Names are etched in the stone. This
memorial was established in 2004 by the Illinois
Freedom Run organization.

1832, and ended with how the teen sisters
were released from captivity by the Indians a
week later. The Indian Creek Massacre claimed
the lives of 16 men, women and children.
Rachel and her husband eventually moved back
to what is now Shabbona Park, where they
erected a monument over the graves of the
slain families. Shabbona was the Potawatomi
chief whose warning the Indian Creek settlers
ignored. He is buried near Morris. The Indian
Creek raid drove settlers to Fort Johnston on
Ottawa’s south bluff, where they met a fellow
from New Salem named Abraham Lincoln, who
arrived in late May to join the militia to fight the
Black Hawk War.

Perhaps you would prefer some time on land and some on the water. From June through
September, guests are invited to take part in the Land and Water Tour. This tour includes a trolley ride on the Starved Rock trolley. The tour takes passengers through the historic sites in the area,
and then returns to Starved Rock Lodge for a delicious soup and salad bar lunch. After lunch, passengers are then treated to a leisurely one hour river cruise on the “Belle of the Rock.” At only

A new addition to LaSalle County is the
Grand Bear Lodge and Indoor Water Park.
This
charming lodge is set in 60 wooded acres of beauty. Guests may choose to enjoy luxurious accommodations in oversized rooms, suites or vacation villas complete with amenities. The lodge features several restaurants, snack bars, ice cream and gift shops. The Grand Bear Lodge offers skindrenching fun in its 24,000 square foot indoor water park. The indoor park houses America’s first

or relaxing in the Lazy River. The water park features a wave pool, a large dump bucket, hot tubs

Illinois & Michigan Canal State Trail
From Seneca to LaSalle
This multi-purpose trail offers visitors scenic hiking and bicycling, combined with the opportunity to experience LaSalle
County’s
natural resources and historical sites.
Walk or bike the canal tow path where horses pulled passenger boats from 1848 until 1852 and mules pulled the heavy freight required to build
Chicago and northern Illinois. Follow the
footsteps of famous Illinoians
such as Abe
Lincoln, “Wild Bill” Hickok, and Chief Shabbona along the shady canal across LaSalle
County from Seneca on the east to LaSalle on the west. Enjoy the turtles sunning themselves or spy many varieties of birds. Check out a restored lock at the LaSalle access, the Fox
River aqueduct at the East Ottawa access and the restored grain elevator in Seneca.
Seven access points in LaSalle County provide parking and access to the 10 foot wide
crushed limestone trail. The 61.5 mile trail will take you all the way east to Joliet.

One of the most prominent displays of outdoor
sculpture anywhere exists here in a collection
called the “Effigy Tumuli,” executed by artist
Michael Heizer. Park has ball diamonds, picnic
areas, biking, bird watching, canoeing, hiking,
snow-mobiling and cross-country skiing.
Canal Road by Rt 351 • La Salle
Restored to its 1848 condition, this lock is representative of the mid 19th century canal locks.
Lock 14 was built with local limestone, and possesses massive white oak gates and swing
arms. This site also provides visitors with an
idea of the scale of canal boat operation. Only a
short distance further downstream of Lock 14
along the Illinois and Michigan trail system, visitors can view the canal’s confluence with the
Illinois River. Bike trail to Utica.

County Conservation District. The park’s wellorganized trail system hosts 14 distinct trails
plus numerous connector trails. These trails
course throughout the park’s habitat, including

The spring wildflower show at Matthiessen is
spectacular, especially on the bluff forest, featuring the magenta-colored blooms of shooting
star, the brick-reds of columbine, the pinks of
spring beauty, and the pastels of hepatica. Five
miles of hiking trails into a canyon and around
the bluff. Hiking along the Vermillion River.
Creek. The 21st century tranquility sharply contrasts with the bloody, violent clash of cultures
that earned the park its place in American history. A monument has been erected in memory of
the 16 men, women and children slain by Native
Americans in the Indian Creek Massacre. Two
teenage sisters who were taken prisoners were
released a week later. The park is named for
the Potawatomi Chief Shabbona, who tried to
protect the white settlers.

Mitchell’s Grove was right in the middle of
heavy glacial action, especially during the last

“CSI” detective and “Forrest Gump” star Gary
Sinese has other talents besides acting: he plays
bass in a musical troupe named for his “Gump”
character. The Chicago-area native and his band
headline the Saturday night festivities of
Ottawa’s much-anticipated summer festival.
During the last five nights of the festival, live
musical acts provide the tunes and local restaurants provide the tastes at the popular “Taste of
Ottawa.” An art fair, a used book sale, local
entertainment, children’s games, an antique car
show, riverboat rides and horsedrawn carriage
