Director’s Note
“The Dancing Years” is Ivor Novello’s most successful musical. It opened in March
1939 at Drury Lane but had to close at the outbreak of WWII. One year later it
began an 18 month tour and returned to London’s Adelphi Theatre in 1942, where
it ran for 969 performances. The company returned again to London in 1947 and
then resumed its tour, playing almost consecutively for ten years. Twenty years later
it was revived at the Saville Theatre in London, with June Bronhill and David Knight,
followed again by a national tour in which I spent a happy two years.
It is a pleasure to be directing the operetta again, at the Salon Varietés,
after having directed it here 10 years ago. Its is especially nice to have Siân
once more playing Maria, Peter not only choreographing but this time playing
Rudi, and Sylvia musically directing once again. All the principal characters
are perfectly cast, and the singers and dancers in this production are even
stronger than before. I would like to thank everyone associated with the
show, on stage and back stage, for all their hard work. I must also thank
Geoffrey and Ellie Bennetts for kindly letting us use their home for
rehearsals. Finally to you our audience for your support. I am sure you
will enjoy all the dedication that the cast and crew have lovingly put
into “The Dancing Years”.

The story begins at a little inn just outside Vienna in 1911. Rudi Kleber, a composer dreams that
one day his music will be played all over Austria and he tells his wishes to Grete, the innkeeper’s
young niece. A party of officers and actresses arrive for early breakfast and Maria
Zeigler, a celebrated singer, buys one of Rudi’s waltzes for her new operetta. She later
persuades her lover, Prince Charles Metterling, to allow Rudi to move into a studio in
his palace.
Soon, Rudi’s songs form the major part of the operetta and Maria is slowly falling
in love with him - a fact not unnoticed by Charles. Rudi sends Grete to England to study
music and dancing and she asks him not to propose marriage to anyone until she grows
up. After a triumphant First Night Rudi & Maria confess their love, however Charles
arrives unexpectedly and a tense situation develops.
Act II opens three years later. Rudi and Maria are deeply in love, Grete returns
and Rudi, with mock seriousness, keeps his promise. Unfortunately, Maria
overhears and thinking the proposal is serious, leaves. The story concludes in
1927. Rudi, who has been living in America, returns to Vienna to find Maria.

FRIENDS OF THE THEATRE
ASSOCIATION (FOTA)
Xpress
FOTA is a social group dedicated to raising funds to make
going to the theatre that little bit nicer. We have improved
what you can hear by buying roving mikes, what you can see
by buying better lights and how you feel by refurbishing the
seats. This year’s big project has been to buy a new sound
desk at a cost of nearly 13,000 euros.
Fundraising and social life go together. We have had trips
to listen to wolves howl, to see almond blossom in the
mountains, to shop till we drop in Gibraltar. We have a lunch
every month and sometimes a garden party in a beautiful villa.
Meet us in the theatre foyer on Mondays, Wednesdays and
Fridays in the mornings – where you can also buy our recycled cards. If you look around the theatre, there are lots of
members just like you here tonight, why not join them.
It is only 6 euros a year. Or you can telephone the
President, Gina Foster on 952 448 410. We even have a
weblog at www.fota-at-sv.blogspot.com so you can stay in
touch with us and the theatre wherever you are.

Director - PETER MITCHELL
Peter is no stranger to “The Dancing Years”, he was a singer
/ dancer in the west end revival and also understudied Rudi
and Franzel. He last directed the show here ten years ago.
The majority of the musicals staged at the Salon varieties
have been directed by Peter, his favourites being
“Showboat”, “The Merry widow”, “Blood brothers”, “The
Rocky Horror Show”, “Jesus Christ Superstar”, “The
Boyfriend” & “Grease”. His next production is “Annie”
which will be presented in October 2007.
PETER HEIGHT - Choreographer/Rudi Kleber
Pete’s career as singer/dancer/choreographer has taken him
to America, Mexico, Alaska, Brazil, Argentina, and the Far
East. Peter has choreographed and danced in many opera
and operettas. He received excellent notices as Bachus in
“Orpheus in the underworld”, and as the mute in “The
Medium”. For many years Peter appeared both on television
and on stage in “The Black and White Minstrel Show”.

Sylvia has recently been treading the boards of the Salon
in “The Heiress” and “Stepping Out” but we are glad to
have her back in the MD’s chair for this complex Ivor Novello
musical. She has Musically Directed countless productions
at the Salon Varietés in her many years involvement here,
from Roger’s and Hammerstein to Gilbert and Sullivan. In
fact, she musically directed “The Dancing Years” here at
the Salon 10 years ago.
SIÂN HOPKINS - Maria Zeigler
Born in Cardiff, South Wales, Sian was still a schoolgirl when
she appeared on TV in “Land of Song” which ran for six
years. She studied at the Guildford school of music and
drama and was a member of Joan Littlewoods “Oh What A
Lovely War” company. Sian also appeared in “A Funny Thing
Happened On The Way To The Forum”, “Camelot”, and
“Side By side” by Sondheim. Her first appearance here was
in 1997 playing Maria in “The Dancing Years”.

LUCY ROMERO-CLARK - Grete
Lucy first appeared on stage as a very young dancer. Since
then she has appeared in every Peter Mitchell musical. Lucy
was a great hit as Nellie in “South Pacific” and Sandy in
“Grease”. Her most recent performance here at the Salon
was as Polly Browne in “The Boyfriend”. At only 15, she
shows much potential.
LIZZ FREEMAN - Cacille
Lizz is well known to Salon audiences. Her vast repertoire
of roles range from a Homely Mother in “The Music Man”,
to a murderess in “Dead Guilty” to a black tribal chief in
“Robinson Crusoe”. She recently directed the popular “Old
Tyme Music Hall” and her next revue is - “You Must
Remember This” music of the 40’s, 50’s, 60’s - opening in
May.
GRAHAM CHERRY - Charles Metterling
Graham trained at Questers Ealing. His first appearance at
the Salon was in “JEFFREY BERNARD IS UNWELL” playing 27
roles! Since then has been in numerous productions, “MACK
AND MABEL”, “OLIVER”, “THE ODD COUPLE”, “MURDER BY
MISADVENTURE” and “WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION”
to name but a few, his most recent was in “ALADDIN”.
OLIVER LEIVA - Franzel
Currently studying for his A Levels at St. Anthony’s College,
Oliver played one of the T-Birds in “Grease”. His most recent
performance was in “The Boy Friend”. He would like to
thank the Peters’ for the opportunity to gain experience,
hopefully, towards a career in Performing Arts in the future.
GINA FOSTER - Hattie
Gina has been involved with the Salon Varietés Theatre for
20 years but is never happier than when she’s on stage in a
Peter Mitchell production. She played the evil “Demoness
of Discontent” in “Mother Goose” and more recently slipped
on her glad-rags and headed Lambeth way in “The Old Tyme
Music Hall”.
