Envisioning a Choir Loft
In 2005, as final designs were settled for our current sanctuary,
our planners desired to make the chancel (stage) area as flexible as
possible. With this in mind, we chose to utilize moveable risers for
the choir. At that time, the full choir included some fifty members.
As the choir grew, allowances were made, and an additional row
added for the use of our hand bells and our expanding choir.
Since moving into the new sanctuary, our choir has more than
doubled in size, with major cantata performances and rehearsals
often exceeding the space on the risers.
The notion of flexibility was a worthy goal, but in practice the
risers have proven too difficult to move. They occasionally have
required mechanical repairs, the movement of the choir on and off
of the risers is often noisy, and there is no accommodation for
wheelchair access. Discussions and planning for their replacement
began in 2011.
The heart of the project is the replacement of the existing choir
risers (4 rows) with a permanent choir loft consisting of 5 rows of
pew seating capable of accommodating 110 persons, including 2 in
wheelchair accessible spaces.
Additionally, the chancel platform is to be extended left and right
to provide some additional stage width for the piano, drums and
organ as well as to provide better wheelchair access into the choir
loft from either side. A low privacy panel/rail will be installed but
will not obstruct the view of the stage or choir. The arc of the
existing communion rail will be shortened to accommodate these
changes but will still allow persons to enter the chancel from the
side.
The first pew on either side of the main floor seating sections will
be relocated to become the back row of those sections and the
hardwood floor of the chancel stage will be refinished to ensure a
seamless connection to the additions.
The total project is projected to cost approximately $90,000 and
should be completed by the summer of 2016. The actual
construction may be done in phases so as to minimize disruption of
our worship space.
We believe that the addition of a permanent choir loft will have a
long-term positive impact on our ministries of worship and music.
We invite you to be a part of this important step in our life
together as a congregation by making a “second mile” commitment
of any amount to support this project. Gifts may be spread over the
course of the year and be paid weekly, monthly, quarterly or as a
one-time offering at any time. Gifts of at least $750 (“one seat”)
may be designated to honor or memorialize someone. Such gifts
will be recorded in our Memorial Book, located in the church gallery.
Watch your mail for additional information in the days ahead, or
pick up a brochure and commitment card at the church. Participants
in our music ministries will be given their initial opportunity to
commit to this project on May 21. The congregation at large will be
invited to join in this effort beginning June 7th at each morning
worship service. Together, let us commit to building a choir loft
worthy of our sanctuary.

Music Ministry
"Praise the Lord! How good it is to sing praises to our
God” Psalm 147
Have you heard? The Seaside UMC
Sanctuary Choir has been invited to sing for the
NC Methodist Annual Conference on Thursday,
June 11th at the 10:45 service in Wilmington,
NC! This is a HUGE honor for us and we are so
excited! We have hired a bus to take us safely to
Wilmington and invited our own Wilmington
String Ensemble to accompany us! There will be
over 2, 000 people in attendance who will join us
in song and worship. You can join us too—either
in person (follow the bus, we leave at 8:30 AM),
or via computer by clicking on the link, which will
be listed in the Thursday emails. We would love
to have you join us, but we would also like to ask
for your prayers. Please start praying NOW for
our safe journey and that all of our choir
members will be well and able to participate.
Thank you!
I am looking forward to VBS this year and
hope you are going to be helping to shepherd our
children during the week of June 15-19. The
music this year is so much fun! Bring your
children, grandchildren or neighborhood children
to VBS!
Traditionally, the Music Ministries take a
well deserved "break" from rehearsing during the
summer months and we are looking forward to it
after a wonderful and busy year. There will still
be great music to lead worship each Sunday so
please join us during the summer.
Now is the time to be prayerfully
considering whether joining the choir or an
ensemble is what God is calling you to do. I will
post the fall schedule in our August newsletter.
Come be a part of this exciting Music Ministry.
We are a growing group of individuals who love
singing and making music to the Lord! Have a
wonderful summer!
With a voice of singing,
Kathryn

Worship News
We can’t say enough about how great the
music was throughout Cantata and Holy Week.
Kathryn Parker and the choir did an
exceptional job and we all commend them for
it. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could fill the
seats at the Maundy Thursday and two Good
Friday Services? Looking ahead, we have the
Red, White and Blue concert for our veterans
on May 24th and our Seaside Choir has been
invited to sing at the UMC NC Annual
Conference Worship Service on June 11th in
the Wilmington Convention Center.
Our usher captains are still in need of
volunteers. This is an important position at our
church and an important part of our worship
service because Ushers and Greeters are the
first people that first time attendees meet.
Their smiles and attention brings them back.
The ushers have worked hard on a video to
inspire volunteers to come forth.
We will soon be welcoming a new Duke
student to our church for the summer. He will
participate in our worship service and as in the
past, preach in several services. Be sure to
give him a warm Seaside welcome.
Welcome Ricky Harrison
Spelling Bee Whizzes
Seaside welcomes Ricky Harrison, our
sixth ministry intern from Duke Divinity School.
The field education program at Duke is a central
part of a student’s formation for ministry. This
opportunity allows students to gain vital
ministry experience within the context of their
more formal academic theological training.
Seaside’s internship is a focused 10-week
experience, inviting the student to reflect
theologically on life in parish leadership.
Ricky is a rising second year student who
hails from Texas. He began his in time in the
Divinity School in the Fall of 2014, but served a
pre-admission field experience last summer at
the United Methodist Related Hinton Rural Life
Center in Hayesville, NC. His home is outside of
Dallas, TX. He begins his work at Seaside on
May 24th and will be with us through August
9th. We celebrate his arrival and look forward to
being in ministry with him through this summer
placement.
During the course of the summer, we
encourage you to invite Ricky to join you for
lunch, dinner, or other activities that he may
get to know us and grow in ministry during his
relatively brief time here.
The Seaside Spellers, Pat Linnell and
Marilyn Schenck, were in the Brunswick
County Literacy Council’s 26th Annual Adult
Spelling Bee to the end! There were thirteen
teams entered into the Bee. At the end of the
third round Pat and Marilyn were one of the
two remaining teams. Their final opponents
were the defending champions; so much was
on the line. Pat and Marilyn went down to the
wire, falling to their nemesis, the word
rapprochement. The winning team spelled
rapprochement correctly and then, to take the
win, spelled caliphate. The Brunswick County
Literacy Council is thankful for Seaside’s
sponsorship of the team and know that
Marilyn and Pat will be back next year ready
to take on all comers and come out victorious,
bringing the title to Seaside. Thanks, Pat and
Marilyn for being incredible spellers and
making Seaside a standout in the spelling
field.
UMM Gives Donations
Playground Upgrades
You may have noticed that our
playground area has been undergoing some
much-needed maintenance of late. Special
thanks to George Baumgartner for his tireless
efforts on this project. But there is more to
come.
As a result of a generous gift from Terry
and Mary Featherstone with support of the
Preschool, STARS, and our Trustees, these
upgrades and improvements will continue.
During the month of June we will have a
commercial grade, bonded rubber mulch
playground surface installed. This surface will
offer the advantage of additional protection for
our children and the durability to allow for
riding toys inside the playground fence. We are
grateful to the Featherstone’s for this generous
gift and look forward to many years of benefit
for the children we serve in Christ’s name.

United Methodist Men’s News
At the UMM meeting this month we heard
a powerful message from the Brunswick Christian
Recovery Center founder, Larry Shreve and
Director, Josh Torbich. BCRC treats addicts of all
types and does so based on the life and
teachings of Jesus Christ. Along with Larry and
Josh, two young men currently going through the
treatment process, gave testimony to the
program effectiveness and the role that Christ
now plays in their lives. BCRC is driven by
private contributions, and accepts no aid from
the government because of the concern for
restrictions placed on their focused Christian
format. At evening’s end, the UMM donated
$1,000 to their program.
The golf tournament results are in at a
record $11,012. The committee has already met
to go over the event and discuss ways to make it
better for next year. They, along with all the
volunteers, did an outstanding planning job and
put on a great tournament.
The 2015 UMM scholarship applications
are available and can be picked up at the church
office. The applicant must be an active member
of Seaside United Methodist Church or a nonmember who is actively involved in SUMC
sponsored projects or programs. He or she must
have been accepted to a collegiate
undergraduate program, an accredited post-high
school educational program, or a state licensed
course of training. Students currently enrolled in
any of the above post-high school programs are
eligible to compete for the 2015 scholarship
award.
The amount of the scholarship is $500
and the signed application must be submitted to
the church office no later than Friday, June 19,
2015.
UMM Presents:
During the months of March, April, and
May 2015, The United Methodist Men of Seaside
United Methodist Church presented checks to
seven of the non-profits supported by the group.
In 2014, over $19,000 was raised by the Seaside
UMM for the benefit of Brunswick County. The
seven selected non-profits were Providence
Home, StreetReach, Literacy Council, Brunswick
Family Assistance, Hope Harbor, S.T.A.R.S
(Seaside Teaching and Reaching Students), and
the Brunswick Sheriff’s Charitable Foundation.

UMW News
Seaside UMW is supporting United
Methodist mission’s efforts in the very poor
country of Sierra Leone, Africa by packing buckets
full of food items. These 5-gallon buckets will be
packed onto a container and the container will be
blessed by Bishop Hope Morgan Ward and Bishop
John Yambasu, who will be visiting our Annual
Conference in June from the Sierra Leone Annual
Conference.
The Seaside UMW will be providing meals
for several of the weeks during the S.T.A.R.S.
Literacy Program this summer. Each circle has
chosen a Monday night to serve the students and
their families. After serving the meal, each UMW
member will join the families for the meal in order
to create a community atmosphere. The desserts
will be focused on the Dr. Seuss book, Oh, The
Places You'll Go, which is the theme for the
S.T.A.R.S. Program.
More than 30 of the finest epicureans will
be participating in the September Basket Bonanza
to Benefit the Methodist Home for Children in
Wilmington. Seaside UMW is donating a beach
themed basket, "Seaside from Sunset" to be used
for the event. Each member is donating coastal
items for the basket.
The Seaside UMW will be hosting the
Women's Spiritual Retreat November 3rd and 4th

Permanent Endowment
Committee—Donor Story
While visiting the Will Planner on her
favorite charity's website, Judy, a surviving
spouse and a mother of three children, came
across the idea of a Give it Twice Trust. She
contacted the charity for more information and
talked with a gift planner who explained the
concept as a way to first give income to children
through a trust and then to transfer the trust
balance to a charity in the future.
Judy wanted to treat each of her three
children equally and also provide a benefit to her
church. The gift planner told Judy that with her
estate IRA holdings she would have the ability to
do something significant for both her family and
her church. Judy was concerned because while
her two older children are financially responsible,
her youngest, Jim, "spends money like water."
Judy was afraid that if Jim were to receive cash in
a lump sum he would spend it right away.
The gift planner explained that the "Give It
Twice" plan could be very helpful. June could
transfer a large amount from her IRA at death to
the trust. Her children would each receive onethird of the income from the trust over 20 years.
That would give Jim a chance to learn to save and
invest. After that time, the trust balance would
benefit her church. In addition, by using her IRA
money, Judy wouldn’t have to pay income tax on
any capital gains, take a charitable deduction, yet
still be able to provide an income for the children.
Judy: “I established a Give it Twice Trust
and was thrilled with the plan. The prospect of
helping my three children and my church made
me happy and I knew that leaving this legacy was
the right thing to do.”
Does this idea appeal to you? If so,
contact one of your pastors or someone on
the Permanent Endowment Committee.

Adult Education
June 11:00 Sunday School Class
Starting May 31st, the class will begin
a 4-week DVD series on Peter and Paul. BBC
has published a fascinating documentary
series that includes “In the Footsteps of St.
Paul,” and “In the Footsteps of St. Peter,” by
David Suchet. You will spend 2 weeks on each.
In each of the documentaries, the
major two-part series produced for the BBC,
Suchet travels with Peter and Paul on their
journeys and follows in their footsteps
showing their impact on Christianity.
May 31st and June 7th will explore the
footsteps of Peter. June 14th and 21st you will
explore the footsteps of Paul.
The class is open to everyone and
meets at 11:00 Sunday mornings in room
210. Watch the Thursday newsletter for what
will follow for the rest of the summer.
Summer Intern to Facilitate Summer Class
Ricky Harrison, our Duke Summer
Intern will be facilitating the Adam Hamilton
DVD course, “Making Sense of the Bible.” The
class will meet beginning, Thursday, June 25th,
from 6:30-8:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall for
6 weeks.
In “Making Sense of the Bible:
Rediscovering the Power of Scripture,”
Hamilton, explores the key points of questions
like: Were Adam and Eve real people? Why is
God so violent in the Old Testament? Why
would Paul command women to “keep silent in
the church? Is Jesus the only way to
salvation? How does God view homosexual
people? And, is the Book of Revelation a guide
to End Times?
In approachable and inviting language,
Hamilton addresses these often misunderstood
biblical themes, leading readers to a deeper
appreciation of the Bible so that we might
hear God speak through it and find its words
to be life-changing and life-giving.
Signup sheets are in the Gallery for
all classes beginning June 1st.

Country Fair BBQ—a HUGE thanks!
A heartfelt thanks to Bev and Mike Williams, the
Country Fair BBQ host and hostess with the most and
mostest. The Country Fair team thanks the Williams' for
all of their hospitality, planning, cooking, baking, and
grilling, and doing everything else to make each evening
perfect. Without them, there just might not be a
BBQ. We are in their debt.
Mike and Bev would like to thank those who
helped make the BBQ a success. A huge shout out to
Colleen and Don McGregor for making all of the beans
and manning the kitchen. Thanks go out to women from
the church who came like little cooking genies and peeled
hundreds of potatoes to make that great salad and to the
others who brought their favorite desserts to share with
the masses. We know that if you have a sweet tooth, you
certainly got your fix at the BBQ.
Finally, thanks goes out to all who purchased
tickets—whether you are a regular or a new
attendee. Along with all of the delicious food, being a part
of the fellowship and camaraderie with those associated
with SUMC makes the BBQ a premiere kickoff for the
Country Fair activities. We're glad you could be a part of
it and hope you already have it on your calendar for next
year.
There is nothing better for a person than that he
should eat and drink and find enjoyment in his
toil. Ecclesiastes 2:24

Country Fair continued:
Leadership Need for Children’s Play Area
It’s important to have a safe and fun
environment for the kids visiting the Country Fair
with their parents. The play area, supervised by
church members, will allow parents to shop worry
-free, confident that their children are safely
enjoying themselves. We hope that Seaside UMC
will be seen as a welcoming place for parents and
their children.
To that aim, the Country Fair Steering
Committee is seeking an adult volunteer who is
willing, able, and delighted to be the Event Leader
for the Children's Area this year. Do you like
"bouncy houses" and children's art activities? Are
you willing to organize other volunteers who are
ready to help out for those two days? If you’re
that person, please consider calling or talking to
Kim or Carolyn Loucks (315-729-6474) about
making this commitment.
Country Fair Donations
Donations can also be brought to the
church storage building (next to the playground)
during office hours on weekdays and on Sunday
mornings, as you come for Church Services, until
11 o'clock. Clothing, household items, furniture,
tools, sporting equipment, decorative items,
dishes, linens, and appliances (please check with
Larry Cramer) are needed, but only if they are in
good condition.
Please, do NOT bring computer printers,
non-flat screen televisions or monitors, or nonoperational computers—and absolutely, no paints,
liquids, or hazardous materials such as kerosene
or lamp fuels. Also, no mattresses or box springs,
as they cannot be sold per NC State law. Items
we cannot sell will need to be disposed of at a
cost and inconvenience to the Church. We want to
offer attractive as well as safe items for sale to
the public.
If you need help getting items to the
church, we have an easy solution. A wonderful
team of volunteers will come and pick up your
items. Please call the church office (910-5795753) and schedule a time.
NEED ANSWERS? WANT TO VOLUNTEER?
The following list includes the names
and phone numbers of the Event Leaders who
can answer questions about donations, and
accept names of those who would like to
volunteer. Remember, there is much work
that is done ahead of time, so if you are out-of
-town during the Country Fair weekend, you
can still help!

Seaside Youth News
Congratulations to Our Graduates!
This year the Seaside Youth Fellowship
is proud to celebrate with two of our students
as they graduate from high school and move
on in their life journey. Callie Hucks and D.J.
Foote have graduated from West Brunswick
High School and as you can imagine they are
both excited about the coming days and
months! Callie plans to attend UNC Chapel Hill
in the Fall. D.J. is already hard at work at
Jones Ford and will continue building his
career there as they have extended an offer of
full-time employment to him. We are so
excited for the potential God has placed in
both of these lives and hope that you will
continue to pray for and bless these two
students as they take on the new and exciting
opportunities that life will bring!
Summer Fun with the YF
After wrapping up a great school year
with our students we are looking forward to
continuing our discipleship this summer with
opportunities for missions, ministry and
community building. Vacation Bible School is
going to be a great opportunity for our
students to grow in Christian service and
leadership as they participate in shepherding
our flocks. We have also been granted the
privilege of helping the STARS program as we
will host one of the Monday evening family
dinners. Plans are also in place to team up
with some other churches in doing some local
missions work as well as having some fun
getting to know students from other places.
An "End of Summer" retreat is in the works as
well. Sprinkle in there some fun days at the
beach, some mini-golf tournaments and it will
be a busy, yet great time for our Youth
Fellowship! As always, you have the
opportunity to serve our students in this
ministry and are encouraged to pray about
God's leading in this direction. If you are
interested in helping, contact Stefanie—she
would LOVE to hear from you!
Grace and peace,
Stefanie Riley

GriefShare
The final session of Cycle 6 concluded with a
balloon release in memory of the participants’ loved
ones:
-It gave me a safe place to express my grief, and I
was able to reconnect with God,
-I was given hope, I made new friends and I was
given tools to help me get through my grief.
-I realize bit by bit – I am healing
-Such nice friendly people
-It made me stronger
-Real people telling their own stories
This group was the largest we have had
since starting GriefShare in 2012. We also had the
best weekly attendance/participation from this
group. The healing and growth we have seen from
each member has been heart-warming.
Our next cycle of GriefShare begins
September 11th and will run through December
18th. For more information, contact Milly Houger,
910 579-2603 or Jim McNeill 910 579-2405.
Garden of Disciples
The Garden of Disciples is undergoing a
restoration. At the time of this publication the
painting should be completed on the Garden’s
perimeter wall. Soon we will be ready to replace
some of the current shrubs in the Garden. The team
needs your help and suggestions as they select just
the right kinds of shrubs to add to the beauty and
interest of the Garden. The shrubs considered
should be hardy, easy to maintain as well as heat
and drought-tolerant. We are also looking for plants
that have color or an interesting structure. If you
are a gardener or landscaper and have ideas we
would love to hear from you. Please call Gerry
Strickland at 910.579.0364.
The Garden is open to all to come and reflect
or to those who would like to give a few minutes of
their time to weed or clean up the garden. The
revitalization of the Garden is due to dedicated
volunteers. No need to wait for an organized
weeding party, just grab some tools and come to
the Garden. All will notice your efforts, and the
committee thanks you in advance.
Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress; instead
of the brier shall come up the myrtle; and it shall be to the Lord
for a memorial, for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.
