Thoughts From this Sunday’s Readings by Fr. John
Previous reflections can be found on his blog at
FrJohnMurphy.blogspot.com
A pithy summary of all today’s readings could be “you can’t take
it with you.” The bottom line for all of us is that when we die, all
the earthly things we have worked for and accumulated mean nothing. What matters in Heaven is totally different from what matters
in our lives here on earth. Wealth in and of itself isn’t bad. What
matters is what we do with our wealth. Do we hoard it like
the doomed rich man in today’s gospel from Luke 12:13-21? Or
do we follow St Paul’s suggestion in the second reading from
Colossians 3:1-5, and “Think of what is above, not of what is on
earth”?
In his encyclical, Evangelii Gaudium, our Holy Father Pope
Francis wrote “We have created new idols. The worship of the
ancient golden calf has returned in a new and ruthless guise in the
idolatry of money and the dictatorship of an impersonal economy
lacking a true human purpose” (56). St. Paul also likened greed to
idolatry in today’s reading from Colossians.
As Christians our lifelong goal should be making ourselves rich in
the eyes of God. Who are the rich in the Kingdom? Once again
St. Paul comes to our rescue giving us guidelines for citizenship
in the Kingdom. “Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and
beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and
patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another, if
one has a grievance against another; as the Lord has forgiven you,
so must you also do. And over all these put on love, that is, the
bond of perfection. And the peace of Chr ist contr ol your
hearts, the peace into which you were also called in one body.
And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as
in all wisdom you teach and admonish one another, singing
psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to
God. And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in
the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father
through him” (Col 3:12-17). If we follow St Paul’s guidelines our
heavenly wealth will be abundant.
Creator God,
Lord and giver of life,
how generous you are to all your creatures.
With such generosity ever before our eyes,
help us to avoid greed in all its forms,
to measure life’s worth
not by the quantity of possessions,
but by the life and love we freely place at the service of others.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever.
AMEN.
And over all these put on love,
that is, the bond of perfection.

Water Walking 101: Healing Fear 24/7
One-Day Workshop – Friday, August 26
10am- 3pm (Eastern Time)
“(People) go through far greater lengths to avoid what they fear
than to obtain what they desire.”
Our fears keep us prisoners drowning in worries from the past, present, future, or, if all is well, losing our joy and life to another’s
problems. Our worries and fears can take half our life. (Pessimists
live half alive and die two years sooner.) We will learn water
walking, not just to stop drowning in our storm, but, like Peter, to
walk on our growing edge where the waves of our fears become the
waves supporting our dreams.
Fee: $50 includes noon meal and $15 non-refundable deposit.
Living Life Fully in Light of Eternity
Weekend of Friday, August 26, 7pm - Sunday, August 28
Near Death Experiences reveal a Divine template for the spiritual
journey into unconditional love. We will explore how the process
of each stage of an NDE facilitates a transformation marked by
peace, forgiveness, increased self-esteem, a hunger for spirituality,
loss of the fear of death, finding our unique purpose, and the
conviction that all that really matters in life is to love as deeply as
the eternal Light of God loves us.
This retreat is to experience this transformation now – without the
inconvenience of first dying. Then our lives will be radiating
Jesus’ promise, “I have come that you may have life and have it
more abundantly.” (John 10:10) The retreat will focus on deepening positive memories, healing negative memories, healing fears of
diminishment and dying, and finding purpose in life.
Fee: $180 (includes a $40 non-refundable deposit)

of God, who is guided by

We could really use your help in Elementary Faith Formation
this school year. As of now, we need 20+ catechists on
Sunday morning, specifically 5th, 4th & 3rd grades, as they
have no teachers or aides. Pre-K, 1st, and 2nd grades only
have 1 class for each grade. Please prayerfully consider
donating your time to help on Sunday mornings 8:45a10:15a.
If you can’t commit to teaching each week, please consider
being a substitute. We can always use extra hands during
cold and flu season. Please contact Sharon Brown for
more information at [email protected]
