Council Corner
Message From the Board- Ron Botello, Board Chairman
I know you can’t really tell, but yes Summer is over and we are officially into Fall. Temperatures are slowly going down and I believe the 100 degree days may be behind us.
The bar in the main clubhouse is on its way to being completed, with the floor down
and only minor details remaining before the new furniture is delivered. I truly believe
this will be a showcase and a destination point that we can all enjoy. I think I see a
grand re-opening in our future.
Sonterra seems to be attracting some golf legends recently. First there was Lee Trevino,
and then we were honored to have Chi Chi Rodriguez visit our club a few weeks ago as
part of the Arzobispo Golf tournament, with the Arch Bishop also in attendance. The club is receiving
great recognition as a class location to have golf tournaments that not only showcases our course, but also
generates revenue. If you are a member of a non-profit or organization that is planning a tournament,
please consider having it at The Club at Sonterra.
Our golf courses are in great shape, renovations are being completed with more planned, there are
multiple activities for everyone, our meeting facilities are excellent, why would anyone want to join another
club in San Antonio? Your board is working hard to make The Club at Sonterra the place to be, with your
help I know we can get there.
The Club at Sonterra invites you to the

On the Greens– Donny Latham, Golf Course Superintendent
I would like to begin this October newsletter with a very big Thank You to
Gordon Hudson and his crew for providing the Grounds Crew with an outstanding Fajita lunch on Friday September 19. It was very much appreciated and
delicious.
I would also like to thank all the members who joined us for the divot party on
Friday September 19th. We started at 5:30pm on #1 South and we were able to
fill all divots on the entire course. It was a great event and a great turnout.
Thank you to all of those who turned out and we appreciate your help.
September was another great month. We were able to repair some areas along the North and South
courses that have be come eroded over the years. We sodded erosion areas along 12/13 North, #11
North and along some cart path edges also on the North Course. We also repaired
some areas along the cart paths all over the South Course. We fertilized both courses
during the month of September and actually caught a small amount of rain, so both
courses responded well to this application. We are cutting quite a bit of grass and both
courses greened up considerably. This is a great time of the year to fertilize your own
lawns heading into the fall. A healthy lawn in the fall is a healthy lawn in the spring!
I’m often asked “What do those three numbers mean
on the bag of fertilizer?” An easy way to remember is
UP-DOWN-ALL AROUND. The first number promotes UPward growth, second number promotes DOWNward growth and the third is ALL AROUND good for the plant. If any of you ever have questions about your
lawn or what kind of weed is in your yard, never hesitate to email me with questions and photos.
October is going to be a very busy month. We will overseed the South Course Emerald Bermuda grass greens
on October 13th. We will be overseeding with Poa trivialis. This type of turfgrass will provide an outstanding
putting green surface throughout the winter months which will also serve as an insulation for our Emerald Bermuda grass. We will also overseed the tees, collars and approaches on the South Course as well as Tees on the
North Course. Another important date to note. The Driving Range will be closed on October 27-November
10th. During these two weeks we will be doing a renovation to our Range Floor. We will bring in some topsoil on the badly eroded areas as well
as improve the overall look of the Driving Range. This will include defining target greens with bunkers to mimic actual shots that you will face
out on the golf course, as well as adding new targets at 10 yard intervals so that you can really work on your game. Once the construction is
complete, we will overseed the entire driving range floor. This process will greatly improve the overall look of your club. In my opinion, the
Driving Range is the first impression of the golf courses and I am looking forward to bringing the Range up to your standards. Thank you for
patience during this renovation. We look forward to seeing you all out on the golf courses and Thank You ALL For Being A Member!
Golf News- Jeff Hunter, Director of Golf
As we roll through September and into October, as my Cardinals get closer to the World Series, and as the weather cools, I
have one thing to ask; have you played golf this week? Both golf courses are really good, the cool mornings and warm afternoons make for the perfect weather combination, and all your friends are here!
Lots of things are in the works starting with the renovation of the driving range. We will close the range Monday
October 27 and re-open Tuesday November 11. We will fill in the holes that don’t allow us to pick the range properly, add
bunkers to a couple of the target greens, and over seed the entire range floor. We thank you all in advance for your understanding and I am working on a plan with a local range that will allow members to use their range at a reduced rate. We will
also over seed the South Course greens and tees, along with the North Course tees. With any help from above at all, this
should allow us to avoid the problems we had this year with the greens.
Our Partners Championship is coming up very quickly in November. As you know the top ten members that sponsored new members will be attending a four day trip of golf, parties, gifts and a great time at PGA National Resort. The competition was fierce,
and at the time of this writing, to close to predict the last spot. Thank you to all of our members who bring their friends and support Sonterra!
October is filled with great events for all members. The SWGA sponsored “Classic Affair” is October 7-9. This is our largest ladies
event of the year and the women of Sonterra put on one of the best events in the state. Golf, food, prizes, friendly competition and a great time
will be had by the winners!!
The MGA Member-Member Match Play, also a staple event at Sonterra, will be played October 11-12. Always one of the most popular
and the last chance to earn points for the Sonterra Cup, this will be a hotly contested tournament.
Congratulations to our match play winners. The Women’s division was finalized with Frances Cohn defeating Susie Dillree for the
crown. The Men’s competition is down to the final four, Mike Drake, Steve McKim, John Dillree and PTBNL. Final matches will be played
shortly to determine our winner.
It is never too early to start thinking about those Christmas special orders. All of those credits you have built up need to be used before years end, so don’t waste it and call us with those orders. New clothing and clubs will be here from all manufacturers in the next couple of
weeks. Shop early, shop often!

“MGA Sonterra Points Update”
“October Tournaments”
The MGA will hold The Member-Member Match Play on Saturday and Sunday October 11th & 12th. This is the last MGA tournament of 2014 and your last chance to earn Sonterra Cup
points. The Member-Member is a two-man two-day tournament
consisting of nine-hole matches. The tournament is flighted
with appropriate tees by flight. Prizes and Sonterra Cup points
are available to be won. Find a partner or sign up as an individual and the pro shop will pair you up.
Remember, joining the MGA is as easy as signing up for a tournament in the pro shop. For more information, call the pro
shop.
“Are you hearing from us?”
The MGA has a regular e-mail communication program with our
members and any interested club members. From time to time
as members join or change their e-mail, we find we are missing
some e-mail addresses. So if you are not receiving our e-mail
just go to the web site at:

and click on the red link at the bottom to sign up for email
notices of MGA events.
“The Brute Results”
The MGA held its annual Brute tournament on Saturday and
Sunday September 6th and 7th. The Brute is a two-man tournament with 27 holes per day in a variety of formats. The weather
was great and pace of play was brisk. We competed on the
North course. In the First Flight the Low Gross was won by
Connor and Reyes with a score of 207. Low Net was won by
McKim and Delgado with 199. The Second Flight Gross Winners were Landweher and Gibbons with Lawrie and Sutterfield
taking Low Net. In the Third Flight the team of Sutton and
French was the Low Gross winner with a score of 228 and Low
Net was won by Hester and Eller. The Fourth Flight Low Gross
was won by Richard and Brooks with a score of 234 and the
team of Baebler and Cross took low net with 203.
Sonterra Cup points were awarded to the top four teams in each
flight (two gross/two net) and pro shop credit was won by the
top three teams in each flight.

November 7 - 9 MGA Sonterra Cup
The MGA Sonterra Cup is a yearlong event. All members of the MGA
compete for “Sonterra Points.” There are a total of 40 players that qualify
for the Sonterra Cup tournament in November. The tournament is set up in
Ryder Cup format and split up between 20 guys each on the RED and
BLUE team. The points are earned by a formula of participation and
performance (gross & net, top 20% get points). The member-member
match play is the last chance to earn a roster spot for the Sonterra Cup held
November 7th - 9th, 2014. Each MGA member is automatically entered into
the Sonterra Cup by signing up for any tournament event.
The race is really tight with 15 points separating number 37 and number 57.
With 15 participation points available in the last tournament, plus
performance points, we’ll have a tight finish to the Sonterra Cup.

Tennis News- Michelle Dodier, Director of Tennis
Wow it’s like Vegas here at Sonterra! We have two
teams going to Nationals, four teams going to Sectionals and numerous members racking up individual
awards to add to the winner’s circle section—and we
aren’t finished yet. Our 3.0 Men’s team is heading to
Palm Springs the third week of October and our 3.5
ladies team follows them westward the week after to
beautiful Tucson. Good luck in your quest for that National title. More details to follow.
Besides all the excitement of league play and teams
heading for titles, we have a few other items on the
October docket. October is Sneakers and Cleats month,
and nominations for the 2015 Tennis Advisory Board.
Sneakers and Cleats is fun because it’s just fun (trust
me). The Sonterra Advisory board is important because
as the tennis play grows so grows, the issues. I know many of you have ideas and
would like to contribute to the cause of making Sonterra an even better place to
play. This is your chance to bring those ideas and issues to the table.
I often say San Antonio is a large city with a small town feel—that’s the feeling
we want to keep for Sonterra. A member said the other day she was on five
teams—with different members and five different team uniforms. Some mornings
she forgets what team or team uniform is playing that day. That’s a lot of tennis
and a lot of fun with a variety of members. We often have this scenario here and
the men do this too--they just don’t have the team uniforms.
Remember “don’t delete us before you read us.”
October Upcoming Events:
October 1- Nominations for the Tennis Advisory Board
October 5- Sneakers and Cleats
October 24-26- SAPTA Doubles Only Tennis Tournament- all Country Clubs
November Upcoming Events:
November 1-30 – Election for the Tennis Advisory Board
November 3- 3rd session of junior program begins
November 17- All club leagues end this week
November 20- Toys from Tennis 9am to 2pm Tennis/Lunch
November 21- Tennis Appreciation Party 7pm to 11pm
November 27 – Thanksgiving Day—pro shop closed
December 1- Club Singles Championship
News You Can Use:
1. No food on courts or chairs please.
2. It is club policy that you check in at the pro shop before going to
your court. This way we know the court is in use and we will not
give it away. If you are going to be late please call the shop so we
may hold it for you. The court is available to the next member if you
are not here 10 minutes after your scheduled time.
3. Ball machine use: for user safety we have a minimum age of 16 for
use of the ball machine. Anyone under 16 must be accompanied by
an adult. The machine sits so high that it is awkward for a young
person to drop the balls into the canister as well as move it into and
out of the shed it’s housed in. Thank you.
4. Please register your guest in the pro shop before play. Reminder: the
same guest may only come once per month.
5. No alcohol may be brought in from outside the club.

The Backboard- I’m not just a wall on a fence!
Do you know what I’m good for?
1. Like a friend I’m always there.
2. You’ll miss before I do.
3. I'm a good warm up before a match -- two can do it.
4. Besides ground strokes I can volley and help you with
half volleys.
5. Warm up my serve -- with just one ball.
Take a lesson and let your pro show you the many uses of a
backboard -- you’ll give out before it does.
Ball Machine- Why use me?
1. Need to work on my strokes—I need to develop a
weapon.
2. Need to practice what my pro just taught me.
3. Can’t find anyone to hit with.
4. Need a good work out.
5. Just lost and I need to vent with my ball machine.
6. My return serve is weak (did you know I can serve?)
7. Need to work on my overheads (did you know I have
great lobs?).

CAPTAINS RELEASING
COURTSPlease captains, let the pro shop
know as soon as possible if you are
not going to need all your courts
you’ve reserved for your league
match. Courts are at a premium and
we have someone on a wait list for
every extra court. This also applies to captains reserving practice courts during the week.
Recycle Cans and used balls- Please!
Just a reminder that we have a large green container at
the back door of the pro shop for tennis cans or any
plastic containers. We also would love it if you
dropped your used tennis balls in the tennis shop.
Thanks in advance for helping out.
Sonterra Tennis Advisory Board Nomination Time - WE WANT YOU!!
It is now time to look in the mirror and say “yes” -- I want to spend one hour a month at a meeting to help Sonterra
keep moving forward in the right direction. “Yes” to all those ideas that we talk about at lunch that we are happy or
unhappy about and will bring to the meeting instead of just tossing it around again at the next luncheon.
“Yes” to making a difference in YOUR club. We will be taking nominations in the tennis shop beginning
October 1st through October 24th.
Election for the board members will begin on November 1st through November 30th.

Fitness Guidelines and Etiquette
The majority of gym-goers are polite, courteous folks who would never eat their dinner in the locker room or leave their dirty towels and used razors in the shower. There are always the outliers, though, who forget that the exercise floor isn’t their home gym and
locker room isn’t their personal dressing chamber; it’s a space shared with dozens of other members. Here’s a refresher course in
fitness and locker room etiquette, and keeping these few tips in mind will ensure that you’ll never attract the ire of a fellow exerciser.
1. No one under the age of 16 is permitted in the Fitness Center or locker rooms unless accompanied by a parent or
qualified adult.
2. Everyone must sign in at the front desk before exercising. All guests must be registered. Guest fee is $6.00. Out of
town guests must be registered through the membership department.
3. Please use sign up sheets for all cardio equipment. Honor scheduled times and time limit guidelines.
4. Do not monopolize entire changing bench, or leave your bags strewn on the floor while exercising or showering. Make
space for all.
5. Place used towels in the towel bins. Small towels and locker room towels must remain in the Fitness Center.
6. Please shower before using whirlpool.
7. No Shaving or Soap products in Whirlpools
8. In locker rooms, take a moment to wipe down the sink and counter after use. Dispose of used razors, Kleenex, and paper
towels.
9. No horseplay or abusive language permitted.
10. Leave the shower the way you would like to enter it, pick up towels, used razors and hair in the drain.
11. If you take towels into the sauna, take them and paper cups out when you leave.
Dress Code:
Shoes and shirts must be worn at all times.
Torn T-shirts, cutoffs, and split-sided jogging shorts are not permitted.
Blue jeans are discouraged for working out.
Swimsuits only in the whirlpools. No leotards or cutoffs.
Dress code may change at Management’s discretion.
Exercise Etiquette
1. Re-rack your weights.
2. Allow others to use weight machines between sets, especially during peak periods.
3. Return benches to their proper place.
4. Use towels provided to wipe down equipment after use.
5. Children under 16 need parental supervision. Small children need activities to occupy themselves while parents work out.
6. Bring your own headphones to use on the cardio equipment.
7. Please be sure to stop the treadmill when you get off even if your intention is to come right back.
Be nice, be courteous, wipe down equipment after use, and pick up after yourself. Fitness center exercise floors and locker rooms
are ruled mostly by common sense and courtesy. Do your part each and every time you hit the gym. Thanks!
