On the Cover - Bill & Margaret Barker’s 1966 Coupe
Just got our first Corvette...
What the heck took us so long?
Ha!
We are long time Chevy
owners, having been involved
with the Vintage Chevrolet
Club of America for the past 35
years. After owning 1931 and
1938 Chevs for most of the
time, it became increasingly
apparent that a car that could travel at freeway speeds would make life much
more enjoyable.
Spent a considerable amount of time at the Portland Swap Meet in April
looking for a more modern car to acquire. Narrowed it down to a 1956 Chev
convertible and a 1961 Corvette convertible. I sat in the Vette the first day of
the meet and loved it. Then on the second day, I sat in it again when the top
was up and it was raining cats and dogs... ouch. The top metal bars rubbed
against my head. It was definitely not a good feeling. Darn. (You, see, I'm six
foot three inches tall.) By the way, the '56 was too much money, with too
much work remaining.
So, I came home without a “new” car. Five days later, I decided to go for a
drive up Highway 99 between Lynnwood and Everett. I remembered that
there used to be a car lot there with “vintage” cars. After looking on the wrong
side of the road for three miles I finally found them. Apparently they moved
across the street to a new location in 1991. I guess that it has been a while
since I was in that neck of the woods. Ha! I walked the entire car lot without
seeing anything that caught my fancy, and then went inside. There was a
yellow '66 vette that blocked my way... and I was hooked before I even got to
the other side of it. I called my good friend, Bob Helgeson and he
immediately drove over to look it over with me. Together we couldn't find any
reason NOT to get it. All that was left was the price negotiation.
I came back with my wife two days later on Sunday, an hour before the dealer
opened. Amazingly enough, the same salesman was there an hour before
opening time on Sunday!!! What the?? Within the next two hours we
concluded our negotiations and I drove the car home around noon. Got home
just as it started raining. Pulled it in the garage just as the drops started. Little
did I know... but it snowed on both of the next two weekends!!! I didn't drive
it again for three weeks!! So I'm now making up for that lost time.

On Your Marque...Get Set... Go! - President’s Message
On Your Marque ...
Get Set ...
Go!
By Kevin Jewell - CMCS President
2001 Z06
If you were not at the July 4th picnic, you missed what I
would describe as one of the best club events since I have
been a member of this fine club. Al Dager and his legions of
volunteers did a fantastic job of pulling this event together.
OK, they couldn’t plan the weather (which was OK), but they
did plan the food, activities and location; all of which worked
very well. Everything worked, and I heard all positive
comments about the picnic.
You probably noticed that the picnic was 100% club financed.
Our club has been fortunate in having several money making
events, plus being frugal on other cost issues with
volunteers, so that we have achieved a fair club cash
balance. Consequently, your club’s board decided to spend a
bit our club money with a give back to our members. Come to
all the next meetings to take advantage of this policy.
We also agreed this year to have club sponsored door prizes
for those people that come to meetings. Chris and Leslie
vonRavensberg are coordinating this effort this year. Red &
white wine plus blue vodka, makes for nice basket, for a July
4th event. If you don’t come to the meetings, you can’t win
the prize, so we hope to see you.
You have heard in prior messages about our sponsors. Our
next meeting will be at Speedway Chevrolet on 8/16/08. We
invite you to join us at Speedway for the August meeting. If
you attended the meeting last Fall at Lee Johnson, we
expect the Speedway meeting to be similar.
We are in the heart of the car activity season. Pick those
events that sound good to you and participate accordingly. I
will continue to recommend that we enjoy the events planned
and not have regrets later in the year because we didn’t do
some events.
See you on the road.

USS John C Stennis Aircraft Carrier - Event Report
Message From The Captain To The Ship’s Crew (following the event)
I could not be more happy with the way you all presented the JOHN C.
STENNIS to the car clubs this weekend. Those folks were ecstatic!
• The way the Sheriff got them through the gate and supported them with
parking.
• the way Chad greeted them on the pier and got them formed up for the
photo-ex expeditiously and meticulously.
• the way Cindy greeted them on the ceremonial quarterdeck to start the
tours.
• the way Doug presented flight deck control, Sean presented the flight
deck and Lynn presented the Bridge. Two hour tours in only three spots
because they loved it so much and had endless questions. And yes I did
get routinely asked if the yellow Z06 that got launched off the cats on the
Ouijas Board was mine.
• the emblematics provided by Fun boss and the MWR staff were hugely
popular, generating over 5,000 dollars in proceeds for our ships store.
• and the photos I got to distribute as they departed were absolute first rate
memories of a lifetime.
Shipmates, you made dreams come true for the 250 people we had onboard
this weekend and lots of our Sailors (over 75) got to hear the enthusiasm in
these peoples voices as they went for rides in the Ferraris, Porsches, Vettes
and Mustangs.
BZ and Well Done! WR/Capn
Write-up by Byron Faber for the GOCC Newsletter
A mid July summer day was a good (no, GREAT) one for the crew of the USS
John C Stennis aircraft carrier & several car clubs, including 4 Corvette Clubs
from the Pacific NW. We had all submitted the necessary information for the
security forces to evaluate in order to have base access. And this was a
privilege for the car clubs, not the general public (or they would be swamped
with requests).
The Corvettes gathered near the base to await their turn to go on base and get
a nicely staged group photo of each club's cars beside the ship.
After the photo session, we moved our cars to nearby parking and then we
were escorted onto the ship.
In the hanger bay they had refreshments set out for us, Starbuck's coffee,
muffins, cookies, fruit, water bottles and donuts. They also had a selection of
ship merchandise to sell for the benefit of the Morale, Welfare & Recreation
(MWR) department. They took orders for shirts with our club's logo on the
back and personalized with our names & the ship's decal on the front. We
placed the orders & they personalized them to be ready when we finished our
tour. The Captain said that the sales and orders made over $5,000 for the
benefit of the MWR department.
10
The people who conducted the tours were very knowledgeable and courteous.
It was awesome to see the giant ship and to meet the sailors who help it to
function as the mightiest warship the planet has ever seen.
Universally, the comments I heard were about how competent & how very
nice all the personnel were. This ship has set many performance records, so
we knew they were very capable, but now we also could see how personable
the officers & crew were, as well.
After the tours were over, we went back to the cars to give rides. The sailors
had been able to sign up for rides in advance of the event, so it was fun to give
some repayment to them for their service to our nation.
One sailor said that this was the best duty day he had ever had. One of the
fellows I took for a ride laughed out loud as I “punched it” getting on to the
freeway, as I always do, too!
All in all, I think we made some of our great military folks delighted with
seeing the cars & having rides, and I know the Corvette people were just as
delighted to have the photos, tours, shirts and to be able to give these worthy
folks rides in our cars.
The ship's web site is http://www.cvn74.navy.mil/news.html
Perhaps we could encourage car clubs nationwide to do similar events for
their local military heroes?

July 4, 2008
•
A great 4th of July Membership Appreciation picnic was held at
Perrigo Community Park in Redmond. Approximately 80
members were in attendance. Members feasted on an abundance

roast beef and barbecued beef sandwiches, homemade chili,
fabulous desserts, and beverages provided by CMCS. Eight
participants in the chili cook-off provided their delicious chili as well. After

President Kevin Jewell called the meeting to order at 1:45 PM.
Board Members Present: Kevin Jewell, Gary Main, Dennis Montgomery,
Cheryl Heppner, David Ormerod, Chris vonRavensberg and Jean Dager.

members present. There were not. She said the current membership count stands
at 272.
Activities Report:

leaving from Fry’s Electronics in Renton in the late morning. The exact time
schedule will be provided later.
• He announced a Cruise for Kids is planned July 26 hosted by the Anchorage
Corvette Assoc. to benefit Seattle’s Ronald McDonald House. Those
interested should see Gary for tour information. The group is interested in
raising support for this worthy cause. He reported that $17,000 was raised
last year and that the Ronald McDonald newsletter wrote about the Club’s
participation. Donations may be sent in care of Gary.

Creek Car Show. Robert said that there have been a few changes from last
year’s show and that he would send e-mail to members about the changes.
• Mike and Jane Armstrong were not present to report on Seattle in September.
Kevin said that this is the CMCS premier event which is held every other

Kinnunen said he will be attending Corvettes in the Park in Cottage Grove, OR
August 8-10 and to see him if anyone would be interested in touring with him to
this event.
OLD BUSINESS: The President asked if there was any old business to discuss
and there was none.
NEW BUSINESS:
Byron Crocker said he would like to change the name of the Club to Corvette
Club of Seattle and leave the word “Marque” out. No one in the Club was
interested in this suggestion.
Newsletter: Oran Petersen inquired if people had received their July newsletter
and most people were affirmative in their response. He said that he had made up
dash plaques for this July 4th picnic and everyone was welcome to take one.
Also, that Club business cards were available to pick up to help promote our
Club. Oran needs some cover photos and biography information for future
newsletters but is covered for the next couple of months.
Door Prize: Chris and Leslie vonRavensberg presented the door prize winner,
Gary Main, with a basket of goodies which included a red and white wine and a
blue bottle of vodka in commemoration of the 4th of July picnic.
Prizes: Al Dager presented gasoline card prizes in increments of $15, $25 & $50
to chili cookoff winners and a $20 gas card to the winner among the early
registrants. Additionally, a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize trophy was presented to each
chili-cookoff winner. Jean Fiorentino won 1st prize, Cheryal Heppner 2nd, and
Dave Ormerod 3rd.
50/50 Drawing: Kevin said our Club has been exceptional in supporting 50/50
raffle tickets that help support our charities. Jack and Claudia announced that
today, $332 in tickets were sold. A drawing was held and $166 was given to the
winner, Gary Maxwell. The other half will be deposited into the scholarship fund.
Kevin reminded members to attend the next general meeting August 16 at
Speedway Chevrolet where dinner will be furnished. Also, that the next Board
meeting will be July 18 at Lee Johnson Chevrolet.
At 2:25 PM, the meeting adjourned in accordance with a motion that was made,
seconded and unanimously passed.
Respectfully submitted,
Jean Dager, Secretary

Aquasox Baseball Game
August 9, 2008
Dinah Shore surely loved baseball, Corvettes
and apple pie. If you do also, here is your
chance to attend the August 9th Aquasox game
in Everett. The team likes to have the
Corvettes lined up at the park entrance. We must be in place
before 6 pm. The game starts at 7 pm. Admission to the game
is free to any of the Corvettes on display. Paul Luczyk has
volunteered to continue this event, taking over from the
chairman of many years, Ben Benninghoff. Contact Paul at

The Location: The Best Western River’s Edge in Tukwila,
Washington is the event hotel this year. It is south of Seattle near the
intersection of Interstate 405 and Interstate 5. Interstate 90 is a few
miles north. This newly remodeled hotel has new pillowtop beds,
plasma televisions, mini fridges and other room amenities. It offers a
free breakfast and much more. The event room rate is $92 per night
plus tax. (This is $28 lower than our 2006 hotel rate.)
Call (425) 226-1812 or (800) 544-9863 to book your reservation now.
Mention CMCS or the Corvette Club to get the event rate. Check out
the hotel at www.bestwestern.com/southcenter.
The Dinner Cruise is Back: Not only is it back, but it is a three-hour
cruise departing from Elliott Bay on the Royal Argosy – Argosy’s
premier ship. The buffet dinner is prepared by Argosy’s own chef. The
food and menu planning are done to the standards of CRI Inc, who
own and manage several of Seattle’s finest restaurants, including the
Metropolitan Grill and Elliott’s Seafood Restaurant. The menu
includes salmon, prime rib, chicken and all the extras, including
vegetarian dishes. They are also serving hors d'oeuvres as we board.
Have a look at Argosy’s site at www.royalargosy.com.
Also, you can leave the driving to us for the evening. We have bus
transportation between the hotel and the ship.

Lance Buller and Stephanie Porter: Lance, Stephanie and the band
will wow you with their musical talents during our cruise. They are well
recognized and accomplished artists based in the Seattle area. Lance
has played with Bob Marley & Little Anthony. He was associated with
the Beach Boys for 24 years. In addition to his trumpet skills, when he
and Stephanie combine their voices and magic, it is something you
will long remember. Check them out at www.lancebuller.com.

Southcenter Area Show ‘n Shine: We have been fortunate to
secure a great and high-visibility location near the hotel and near the
state’s largest shopping center. Albert Lee Appliances in Tukwila is
the venue for our Saturday morning show, which is a Tukwila
Centennial event. Judging is People’s Choice.

Friday Night Reception and Valve Cover Races: Enjoy a CMCS
hosted barbecue at the hotel to meet and greet old and new friends.
Afterwards are the famous valve cover races. For rules and
information about the valve cover races, go to our Web site
www.corvettemarqueclub.com and look in the downloads section for
the document “Lets Go Valve Cover Racin’ – Rules and More”. As
you’ll recall, the participants and the spectators all enjoy this
competitive event.
Great Drives: The event includes two driving events: The Sleepless
in Seattle Tour on Friday night, after the valve cover races and a
Saturday afternoon tour, after the Show ‘n Shine. We’ll have you back
in time for you to get ready for the Saturday cruise, banquet and
entertainment.
Sunday Raffles and Awards: We promise to have you on your way
by 11am, after the awards presentation and after the drawings for the
many raffle prizes.
The Price: The price, at $95 per person, has not increased for this
event since 2004. By lowering your total cost for two nights at the
hotel and for the event by almost $60, you’ll have extra left over for
fuel. This weekend extravaganza is exceptional. It is made all the
more so by the great folks who come to Corvette events.
A Marque Club Welcome: Our club loves to host this event and to
share our town with you. We can do that only if you come.

SIS 2008
by Michael & Jane Armstrong
What is special about July 16th, 2008?
July 16th we surpassed the number 100.
That is the number of friends who have
registered to attend SIS 2008. This is
way ahead of previous SIS events at this
relatively early date. We have an equal number of entries
from our other clubs and from our own club. The top two
clubs for entries are running neck and neck. ( The
competition continues to heat up!) And there may be another
club that surprises everyone to pull ahead in the days ahead.
None of this should surprise you. You know that SIS is a
high-value event with a wonderful variety of fun activities.
The raffle items are coming in and the details just get
better. We may sell this one out. Our restriction is the boat
capacity, but we would love the challenge of squeezing in just
a few more if we hit that number. Okay, our hopes are high.
But don’t you take a chance. In two months, Seattle in
September V will be over and everyone will be home. Those
who attended will be sharing their good-time stories and
hopefully some of their “goodies” with their club friends who
missed out. Now which “boat” do you want to find yourself
in? Please mail in your registration today.
We now have club t-shirts available for our members. They are
white Hanes tagless in 100% cotton in sizes M to 3X. The cost is
$8. They are available from Mike Armstrong at club meetings and
events while quantities last.

If you have been watching the NCM Construction Cam then you have seen a
lot of things really taking shape. Concrete work has been going on this week
29
and many of the large steel girders and the barrel roof pieces are going up
now.
A second construction cam will be going up on the inside of the Museum soon
to help showcase the action taking place on the new Corvette Boulevard –
stay tuned.
Take a minute and view our outdoor “construction cam” here.
Preserve and Document Your Corvette's History
Images, documents and pieces of historic memorabilia preserve a Corvette’s
history, and we offer another way to save your Corvette’s past and preserve it
for the future with Build sheets and reproduction window stickers.
Build sheets are available on Corvettes 1981 – current model year, and you
can save by ordering the complete package that includes your Corvette's
dealer brochure and the Corvette Black Book. Find out more about this
special way to document your Corvette’s history and place your order online
or call us at: (800) 53-VETTE.
We have also obtained a limited number of original Corvette build sheets from
the Corvette Assembly Plant and are offering them for sale through our
Resource Center. We have random build sheets on Corvettes produced from
2002-2007.
These are “not” reproduction copies and many are marked, tattered and worn
from the journey through the build process. Build sheets are available at $40
for NCM members and $50 for non members. You may contact the Resource
Center at: (800) 53-VETTE to find out if your 2002-2007 build sheet is
available prior to purchase.

Ronald McDonald House - Event Report
by Marty Cameron
Arriving at the Ronald McDonald House on July 16th
at 4 pm gave Joyce Jones, Joice Bueling, myself and
my sister-in-law (Bev) a chance to help with the
dinner meal. Susan, who has been a volunteer at the
house for 2 years, supplies the dinner (a baked potato
bar/salad) and we bring dessert. Joice was in the right
place at the right time and has purchased enough

Laps From the Past or “Marque in Time”
A CMCS history feature by Ben Benninghoff
40 LAPS AGO: August ‘68. President Bruce Kelly
oversees the monthly business meeting at the home of the
Clarks. A modest profit was realized from the past Rally;
expenses were less than expected. PRI practices have been
arraigned for next month. Jeff Weymouth will handle
publicity for the event. Carl Mollow is working on
gathering 39 trophies for the Rally. If profits allow the
purchase of timing lights will take place. Larry Shirk will
take care of the tech inspections. Corner workers are still needed, contact Dan
Boemeke or Larry Hillard to volunteer. Frank Olsheski will take care of
timing. John Thomas will handle traffic control. A Halloween party is in the
works for October, location not secured yet. A questionnaire for WWSCC
was filled out and future dates and events for the coming year were
announced. The typewriter issue was tabled for further discussions. Wally
Arrowsmith asked about the telephone committee and the program chair.
30 LAPS AGO: August ‘78. President Len Hodges opens the monthly
meeting after the Beach Party get together at Kayak Point Park in Marysville,
where 32 members attend. CMCS celebrates the Corvette’s Silver
Anniversary Ball at the Windjammer on Shilshoe Bay, and attends the 9th
Vintage Corvette Enthusiasts Picnic at Rainbow Falls State Park. Other events

by the Nanaimo Corvette Club, Spokane Corvette Club’s 2nd Annual
Convention at the Sheraton Hotel and Spokane Raceway, Fun In The Sun
meet NWACC meet sponsored by the Hi Desert Corvette Club in Bend
Oregon. Since the past 5 out of 8 official monthly meeting have not seen a
quorum present to make motions and call for voting, a mail out ballet electing
support for a bylaw change to waive such has been sent out to all members for
approval. There still exits the requirement for a 2/3 majority vote to carry a
motion at a meeting, but this will go a long way to have the meetings be
official and legal on these matters. CMCS obtains 1,000 “Would you like to
meet other Corvette enthusiasts?” hand out cards. Each member may have up
to 10 free, or for purchase of $2.50 for 100. Window-Bumper Stickers “Road
Race Drivers Do It Deeper And Come Out Harder”, or, “Have You Hugged
Your Car Today”, are available for $5@; 6 or more for $3@. Membership
chair Melody Kahler motions the club approves John & Penny Grosso, and
Mr. & Mrs. Lee Johnson as honorary members, while voting in new members
Conrad Engeness, Sally Christian, Barb Kelly, all approved by the members
(nothing mentioned in minutes concerning the total membership numbersBen).
