UMM Jazz Ensembles to hold "Rebuild Lakeside Ballroom" benefit
Summary:
(October 8, 2003)-The public is invited to “Jazz it up for Lakeside” when the University of Minnesota, Morris Jazz
Ensembles perform during a “Rebuild Lakeside Ballroom” Benefit Dance Saturday, Oct. 18, at Central Square in
Glenwood. The City of Glenwood plans to rebuild the historic ballroom, which burned last summer.
The jazz begins at 8 p.m.. Or arrive early at 7:15 p.m. and receive free dance lessons courtesy of the UMM Swing Club.
Tickets are $10 adults $5 students.
The historic Lakeside Ballroom, once located on the shores of Lake Minnewaska, had attracted many big bands
including the likes of Glen Miller, Louis Armstrong, and Lawrence Welk.
"The Ballroom was historically monumental for this area," said Dr. James Carlson, director of the UMM Jazz
Ensembles. It had also been the site of dances sponsored by the UMM jazz ensembles to raise money for scholarships
and other projects at UMM.
Members of the UMM Jazz I and Jazz II will donate their time for the dance. Tony Streng, UMM student and a senior
guitar player in Jazz II said, "I think it's a good idea so our group can give back to the area. Especially since we have
used it [Lakeside Ballroom] before."
For advanced tickets, call Central Square ticket office, 320-634-0400. Tickets are also available at the door, or from
Glenwood State Bank, Eagle Bank, StellaBella Coffee House, and Corner Drug, all of Glenwood.
Central Square is located at 105 – 2nd Ave N.E. in Glenwood.
