State of Michigan. Two separate lines include more than

cience, history and the arts emerge and merge for children and adults through hands-on activities with indoor
and outdoor museum exhibits at Raven Hill Discovery
Center. The museum is 157 acres of indoor and outdoor fun.
The Indoor Museum facilities provide a host of exhibits
that foster learning through creative displays and play.
Science comes alive when children ride a generator bike to
turn on lights and learn about solar energy in a visit to the
Off the Grid Energy House. History becomes relevant when
children visit Raven Hill Schoolhouse and sit at desks used
by different generations. Visitors can see a working loom,
learn to fuse glass or create stained glass art projects, work
in clay, metal or other creative media.
Outdoor exhibits invite visitors to walk through time
while connecting history, art, science and music. Beyond
Jurassic Park depicts Earth's geologic history with rocks,
fossils and interpretations of plants and animals living in
the time of dinosaurs. Ancient World is a 30 acre field that
explores four world cultures: American, European, African
and Asian. Visitors can see what work and play was like in
ancient times. The Earth Tones Music Garden connects the
science of sound and the art of music. Earth Tones instruments include a 75' friction harp, stone lithophone, whale
drum, mushroom bells and more as earth materials generate melodies with natural instruments. A Tree House,
Labyrinth, Wetlands Boardwalk and more
continue the outdoor exhibits.
Open year round for individuals and families. Groups and
classes are welcome by appointment. Raven Hill Discovery
Center is at 4737 Fuller Road, East Jordan, MI 49727.

Bailey's Place, Petoskey
Stones & Stuff, Petoskey
he origin of the Petoskey Stone can be
traced back about 350 million years to
the Devonian seas that covered Michigan's
Lower Peninsula. In 1965, the Petoskey Stone
was selected to be the state stone--the first
fossil designated as such by a state legislature.
While Petoskey Stones can be found on
beaches around the northern half of
Michigan, they are more stunning and beautiful when they're polished. The stone pictured sitting on President Obama's desk
made its way from Bailey's Place to the White

"I knew it was our stone instantly," says
Bailey. A close friend of Souza's, Patti Lease, bought the stone. It was
intended to be a 50th birthday present for the president, though
Bailey didn't know it at the time. Only later did she learn that it
ended up on the president's desk.
Bailey's Place also specializes in sterling silver Petoskey Stone

Cross in the Woods,
Indian River
isitors passing through Indian River stop at National
Shrine and Parish of Cross in the Woods--whether or not
they are personally religious. The history and spectacle of the
shrine make it one of northern Michigan's top tourist attractions.
In 1946 the diocese of Grand Rapids established a parish
in Indian River to serve the Catholic families in the area and
swelling number of summer vacationers. The original rectory
and church were designed by Alden B. Dow, a student of
Frank Lloyd Wright. The Administrator, Father Charles
Brophy envisioned something extra, however.
Father Brophy commissioned a gigantic cross, erected in
1954. Made of a single California Redwood, the cross stands
55 feet tall and 22 feet wide. When the Grand Rapids Bishop
declared that "the cross looks like an empty house without the
figure of Christ on it," Michigan sculptor Marshall Fredericks
was commissioned to design the figure of the body of Christ.
Four years later the figure was cast in bronze in the country of Norway because there were not casting plants in the US
large enough to produce the work. The corpus is 28 feet tall-with arms stretching out 21 feet--and weighs 7 tons.
Cross in the Woods is open from dawn to dusk every day
throughout the year. There is no charge to visit, but donations
help maintain the site. A Gift Shop, Doll Museum, Meditation
Trail are also open to visitors.

Great Lakes Lore
Maritime Museum,
Rogers City
reat Lakes Lore is a maritime museum that honors the
people who served the shipping industry. Generations of
men and women sailing the Great Lakes are remembered
with their stories being told in displays featuring their uniforms, personal possessions, navigational and maritime tools.
Four centuries of Great Lakes shipping traditions and history are revealed. From small daysailers manned by pre-colonial French and British traders, to modern-day supercarriers,
captains and crew are depicted and commemorated.
Learn about tragic losses of ships and personnel on the
Great Lakes, where as many as 200 vessels per season were
lost, and are still being discovered. The museum highlights
accounts of the loss of the Cedarville and Carl D. Bradley as
told by survivors who were aboard the vessels.
Ship out with some of your own Great Lakes artifacts. The
Great Lakes Lore Museum Gift Shop is fully stocked with
nautical effects. The museum also features one of Michigan's
best maritime art galleries.

heboygan Brewing Company is once more thriving in
Northern Michigan. First established in the late
1880’s, the former “Cheboygan Brewing & Malting

Perched on the west bank of the Cheboygan River, the
brewery had a succession of owners, and was known by
several names. Both industries declined with reduced timber production, prohibition, and the swelling popularity
of national brands – and the brewery in Cheboygan closed
in 1911.

Tip of the Mitt and UP
Wineries Compete on
the National Stage
ost Michiganders are familiar with the established
wine growing areas of the state. Southwestern
Michigan, the Lake Michigan Shore, along with Old
Mission Peninsula and Leelanau Peninsula have been
recognized as the four federally approved viticultural
areas. There are more than a hundred established
wineries growing a variety of classic European varieties
such as Chardonnay, Riesling, or Pinot Noir--as well as
French/American hybrids.
There's a burgeoning grape-growing region in our
midst, however, with new varieties thriving north of the
45th parallel, and spreading throughout the Tip of the
Mitt and into the UP. Grapes are new American, genetically adjusted, and/or culturally enhanced varieties,
according to Dr. Jerry Perrone, owner and winemaker
at Pleasantview Winery in Harbor Springs. Thirty years
ago, says Perrone, there were no wineries this far north.
There are more than a dozen now, as cold hardy
grapevines flourish in Harbor Springs, Indian River,
Petoskey, Cheboygan, Alpena, as well as the UP.
Many wineries have tasting rooms, with varying charges
per tasting. The wines are made from new cold varieties
such as Marquette, Kay Gray, Frontenac and Sabrevois.
There are sweet and semi-sweet wines, semi dry reds and
whites. Some are tart or crisp. All are interesting and an
adventure.

and supports the restoration of these magnificent structures.
In 1984 the GLLKA discovered the remote St. Helena
Island light station in deplorable condition. A group of
dedicated volunteers worked more than twenty years to
restore the lighthouse, earning it the nickname "The
Miracle of the Straits of Mackinac."
In 2004, the Association received the deed to the
Cheboygan River Front Range light and is now undertaking restoration as funding becomes available. Plans call for
returning it to its circa 1910 appearance, when huge numbers of vessels carried lumber from area mills to harbors
throughout the Great Lakes. The lighthouse is open to the

public weekends during the
summer. Volunteer keepers stay
at the lighthouse, greet the
public, and staff the gift shop.
Volunteer Keeper programs are available at lighthouses throughout the Great
Lakes. A complete Keeper program list is at the GLLKA website, under "Resources."

Voyageur Trading Post,
St. Ignace
he Voyageur Trading Post in St. Ignace celebrates
Michigan artists. The artists in turn celebrate nature and
their Michigan heritage
through stunning artwork in
a wide variety of media.
Dozens of artists are represented in the gallery which
opened in 2011. Owner Alan
Turf, a furniture maker, specializes in a variety of wood
projects, picture frames and
folk art.
Examples of what you will
find include: wood turnings
produced by artist Jim
Rutledge, which he makes on
a wood lathe, then hand
paints in colorful designs.
His design inspirations come
primarily from Native
American patterns. Jack

high-gloss tables and furniture using natural wood forms and
burls. His posse of like-minded "wood pirates" bring him
interesting pieces from the forest to start the creative
process.

Gold Mine Jewelry, St. Ignace
isitors to the Tip of the Mitt are fascinated with Michigan's distinctive rocks and semi-precious stones. The Petoskey stone, the
Michigan State Stone, is probably the most well known, found along
the beaches and in fields and quarries of Northern Michigan. The
Puddingstone, while less well-known, often contains a dramatic blaze
of color, and varies from red to brown and pink to purple.
Puddingstones, more than a billion years old, are one of the favorite
materials used by jewelry artist Yvonne Della-Moretta, co-owner of
Gold Mine Jewelry in St. Ignace.
The upscale shop features a large selection of original designs by
Della-Moretta in a variety of natural Michigan stones. Featured are
necklaces, beads, bracelets, bookends and home decor.
Della-Moretta has also designed jewelry inspired by the Mackinac
Bridge.
Her creations are in a variety of precious metals, many including gemstones. The Mackinac Bridge Ring has become a favorite keepsake for
visitors.
Della-Moretta and husband Tom boast more than 25 years in the
jewelry business. Gold Mine is a full service jewelry shop, offering
only conflict-free diamonds. Custom design and repair services available.

The Fort Michilimackinac Pageant
Story by Mike Fornes
ho would have known 250 years ago that an event on
the shores of the Straits of Mackinac would one day
become commemorated as the longest-running free attraction in the state of Michigan?
The Fort
Michilimackinac
Pageant, a re-enactment of events that
took place at the
Straits of Mackinac
from 1715 until June
2, 1763, tells a story
that culminates in an
attack by American
Indians upon British
troops at the fort that Re-enactors put on a mock fight between
has been re-construct- the British and the American Indians
ed in its original location by Mackinac State Historic Parks.
This year marks the 250th anniversary of the famed battle
at the fort.
The show will be performed at 3:30 p.m. Saturday and at
2:30 p.m. on Sunday and Monday, Memorial Day. The 2013
edition of the pageant — now in its 52nd year — will again
feature a cast of a sizable portion of Mackinaw City’s entire
population of 878 plus another 200 re-enactors who come
from other areas of Michigan and several neighboring states
to participate in the colorful event at Colonial
Michilimackinac.
The action begins each day with a fashion show 30 minutes prior to the start of the Pageant, narrated to display cultural differences in authentic period wear. Participants dress
as American Indians, French or British colonials or soldiers,
and voyageurs.
In the history of the Fort Michilimackinac Pageant there
have been many changes. Although the basic story of the
Pageant has remained the same throughout the many years
of its presentation, changes in the script and action have
reflected changing attitudes toward the cultures portrayed.
Adaptations have also been made to make the Pageant more
historically authentic. The recurring theme of all Pageant
participants is to remain faithful to the spirit of history and
honor those whose stories make up the events of the Pageant.
The highlight of each year’s performance is the baggatiway
game, the ruse by which the Indians gained entry to the fort
held by the British on June 2, 1763. By intentionally throwing
a small stuffed leather ball over the fort’s wall as though it
was part of the game, the Indians hoped to attack the garrison at Michilimackinac. A decisive victory resulted in the
W
deaths of nearly two dozen British. The Indians later abandoned the fort and American forces decided to rebuild the
stronghold high atop a Mackinac Island bluff.
There is no charge to any of the pageant performances or
accompanying events. A free will offering is taken up before
the performances and donations are used to develop authentic clothing and props.
Audiences annually travel from throughout America to see
the show, yet many locals have no idea it exists or have never
attended the free event, organizers say.
