The Field Club Foundation, a
separate 501C3 organization, on
November 10th, will be showing a
recently completed DVD created
by Ringling Art School students,
entitled “A Sense of Place”. In
addition to some terrific cinema
tography, there is a rich back
ground on the Club’s buildings
andhistory.

a.m., the Christmas decorating
group,headedbyFranDietz,Bar
bara Smith and Peggy Wilhelm,
willbetransformingourclubinto
a proverbial Winter Wonderland.

Last month, I opened my col
umn by noting that Art Ferguson
hadbeenourFCYCdelegatefor14
years. I described in detail his
work and accomplishments, but I
neglected to thank him for a job
well done. If you see Art around
the Club, please acknowledge all
his hard work. The Club thanks
Art for his many years of service.

issues related to the Club. It was

The weather is changing and
allthefamiliarfacesarestartingto
return from up north. This must
mean that it’s November and the
festive holiday seasons are offi
cially upon us. Before the parties
andbigcelebrationsgetstartedwe
holdourAnnualMeeting,whichis
scheduled for November 8th this
year. We hope you all plan to at
tend. The Agenda which you

Over the past two years the
Field Club Foundation has dili
gentlyworkedonputtingtogether
a film that showcases the history
of our Clubhouse and the impor
tanceofupholdingtheClubsstan
dards for the families and
generations to come. A big con
gratulations goes out to General
Crowell,thePresidentoftheFoun
dation on this truly remarkable
film. The Foundation is having a
specialpreviewinwhichallmem
berscancomeandviewthiswon
derfulportrayalofTheFieldClub.

Since we have reopened you
mayhaveheardmetalkalotabout
the big change at the entrance to
our Club. If you haven’t already
noticed both houses at our en
trancehavebeendemolished! Al
thoughweranintomanyobstacles
from the permitting and schedul
ingoftheproject,tocoordinating
irrigation, sod and plantings, it
was well worth the extra effort. I
must congratulate the Structural
Committee headed by Mr. John
Swift and of course the wonder
womanbehindtheGroundsCom
mittee, Mrs. Irene Page for work
ing together to accomplish this
spectacular entry to the Club. We
can now appreciate the entrance
and view of our historic Gate
house! All of the hard work and
planningthatwentintothisproject
waswellworththeendresult.
Wehavequiteafeweventsto
look forward to in November. If
you’ve taken a look at our Calen
dar you will notice that we have
twoveryimportantpeoplethatour
visiting our Club this month for
our popular Commodore’s Calls.

famous film director Werner Her
zog.Therewillbeaviewingofone
of his films, as well as a question
and answer session. I must thank
Katherine Harris and Sam Logan
for making contact and bringing
suchadistinguishedpersontoour
Club.

attheClubonNovember22nd.The
Club had to go through several
security checks in preparation for
General Mattis’ arrival. The visit
ing officers who did the initial in
spection of the Club did warn me
that if General Mattis was sud
denly called to central command
the event would unfortunately be
cancelled.Let’shopethisisnotthe
case, and instead look forward to
GeneralMattis’visit!Iwouldespe

making this function possible. I

bed!Highwindsanddrivingrain.
OK for sailboats, but those big
powerboatslookatitalittledif
ferently.Asithappened,Mother
Nature couldn’t have treated us
more kindly; windy sure, but
worse winds and rain mostly at
night when we were snugly tied
down,exceptforthefewwhohad
to wrestle their lines in the wee
smallhours!Wehadagreattime!

November 28th
There were 38 people and 10
boats on the cruise. By the time
four o’clock Friday rolled around
allbutoneoftheboatswerein.The
onethat wasn’t limped in atmid
night,havingtakenawrongturn,
had to wait for a higher tide to
complete. The weekend got un
derwaywithourcaptain’scocktail
party under the Dockmaster’s of
ficeoncenterdock,whichledtoa
quietseguetotheboatsorarestau
ranttofinishtheday.
At nine the next morning the
annual Field Club Useppa Tennis
Tournamentwasunderway.With
10playerswehadgreattime.This
year John Stephan and Ann Ross
organized the ladders (Nolia was
busy with a family reunion else
where). It was great exercise
through to 11:00 AM. We are
happytoannouncethewinnersfor
2011.Men’schampion:BraunGra
ham, Ladies’: Jeanne Graham.
Runners up were Ann Clark and
FredEngels.
Thisyearwedecidedtoletthe
RangoonExpressstayatdockside
and give Captain Jim Clark some

would have to wait for another
year. The afternoon was spent at
leisure, getting ready for the
evening’s festivities, watching the
gamesorjustplainvegingout.
DinnerwasintheTarponBar,
reserved just for us. We were
servedawonderfulbuffetoffillet,
chickenandgrouper.Withevery
one happy and comfortable, talk
ingovertheeventsoftheday,the
eveningwasoverbeforeweknew
it,andweretiredtoourboatsand
cottages to get ready for an early
start home Sunday morning to
beatthetide.
Bymyreckoningthisisthe30th
yearoftheUseppatrip.Hopefully
therewillbemanymore.
