Celebrate National Library Week April 13-19
First celebrated in 1958, National Library Week is a time to celebrate the contributions of
our nation’s libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support. The Library offers
valuable resources that change people’s lives every day, including language learning resources,
public computer access, databases for job searches and homework help. During National
Library Week, stop by the Library for a sweet treat and tell us how the Library has changed your
life. Help change someone’s life by participating in the Community Blood Drive or in one of the
Library’s year-round activities.
Community Blood Drive
at Your Library
In conjunction with the Heartland Blood Centers,
the Library will be hosting a blood drive on
Wednesday, April 16 from 3:30 – 7:30 p.m.
A mobile coach will be located at the lower
level parking lot of the Library. Register online
at http://bit.ly/donatewpld. Simply create an
account, register and check in at the registration
table, located in our lower level lobby on the day
of the blood drive. Photo ID required. Walk-ins
welcome. Refreshments will be provided. Can’t
donate? We are looking for registration table

Clay3 Ceramics Exhibition Returns
in March
ClaySpace’s Clay3 National Ceramics Exhibition
will be hosted by the Library during the month
of March. An opening reception will be held
on Friday, February 28 from 6 – 9 p.m. Both
functional and sculptural ceramic art are
included in this juried exhibition. Each piece
displayed must fit within one cubic foot of space.
The exhibit is an opportunity for all ages to enjoy
the craftsmanship and artistry of this medium.

Teen Space Now Open
The Library’s new teen space features
comfortable seating and easy access to the
newest books for young adults. Set just inside
the Library’s main entrance, this space is
available for the teens’ exclusive use anytime
school is not in session. (Others can enjoy the
space before 2 p.m. on school days.)

Learn how many of our common household products contain chemicals
that hurt our immune system and harm our health. Dawn Duffy, a clinical
Aromatherapist specializing in holistic wellness, will instruct us how to use
therapeutic grade essential oils to cleanse our home while boosting our
immune system. Discover how we can use essential oils to relieve stress,
increase vitality and give us a better outlook on life. She will also talk
about natural solutions for pain, allergies, sleeplessness, hot flashes and
more. Dawn’s personal journey through two cancer diagnoses propelled her
to make many lifestyle and nutritional changes. Her mission is to share
what she has learned to help others to improve the quality of their lives
holistically.

Bees and other pollinating insects are vital
to our food chain. The decline in these
populations is getting a lot of media attention. Join local Warrenville
beekeeper Mary Puskar as she shares information on bees and
beekeeping and learn what you can do to help address the declining bee
population. Gardening tips, honey recipes and a honey tasting will be
included.
Environmental Book Discussion *
Tuesday, March 4, 7 p.m.
Susan Miura and Pat Nicholls will transport us
to the Greek Islands. Beginning in Athens, they
will feature the Acropolis, Parthenon, National
Garden of Athens and more. Attendees will
learn how to make the most of their time in this ancient city. From there
we will journey to some of the breathtaking Greek islands in the Aegean
Sea including Mykonos and Santorini, Beautiful slides of the islands’
picturesque towns and tiny streets, as well as stunning views from towns
perched on volcanic cliffs, will have audience members anxious to book a
trip. Samples of local food and a packet of authentic regional recipes will
be provided.
Tuesday, March 25, 7 p.m.
Resident Connie Schmidt will lead a book discussion
on an environmental topic. In her book, Overdressed,
author Elizabeth L. Cline evaluates the true costs of
low priced clothing on our world socially, economically
and environmentally. During the process she evolves
into a conscientious shopper and shares her journey
with us. Throughout her transformation she visits a
myriad of sources for clothing including garment factories, resale shops and designer boutiques seeking sustainable clothing.
Her message that “cheap chic” is doing damage to our planet and society
is a cry for social change. To read more on this subject, check out Cline’s

Creating Native Eco-Gardens
in Your Community *
Thursday, April 10, 7 p.m.

Tired of the endless battle to care for your
lawn? Want to see how you can get started
transforming spaces into eco-friendly, heritage based places? This
inspirational program is for those who wish to create native eco-friendly
landscapes. Dennis Paige will discuss how more than 50 million acres
of lawn are cultivated in the United States, covering more American land
than any single crop. Most lawns today are comprised of high carbon footprint, excessive maintenance, non-native species; in short, a biologically
sterile landscape. Learn how one community in the suburbs transformed
their lawns into an unfolding range of multi-seasonally colorful prairie,
woodland, and wetland wildflowers, grasses and native rain gardens.
Creating a Terrarium Garden *
Tuesday, April 15, 7 p.m.
Add a little green to your indoor space. Terrariums give us the chance to
bring nature indoors with a minimum of care. A great way to engage children, these indoor gardens can be scattered throughout the home or office
and make wonderful gifts. Joannie Rocchi will share her love of terrariums
by covering the basics of creating your own garden and will showcase
some of her own creations. She will give an actual demonstration of creating a terrarium using appropriate plants, containers and other materials.
Participants will receive packages of charcoal, pea gravel and potting mix
to help them get started.

Thursday, April 24, 7 p.m.
Would you like to maintain your cognitive vitality? In this educational and
entertaining presentation you will learn about your brain and activities
which can help you maintain and even improve brain function. Dr. Linda
Sasser will also discuss how memory works, age-related memory changes,
and strategies for improving retention and recall. Sasser, who holds a
Ph.D. in Educational Psychology, has more than 25 years of experience
as a professional speaker and professor of educational and cognitive
psychology.
An Evening with Fab Four FAQ:
The Beatles Performing Years 1957-1966 *
Monday, April 28, 7 p.m.
Join Robert Rodriguez in a presentation that traces the origins of the
Beatles, from their skiffle days as The Quarry Men through the decision
to cease touring in 1966, amidst great controversies as they segued into
becoming a studio act. Rodriquez will give a short talk and then show a
mini-documentary that includes rare photos, interviews, concert segments
and promos - as well as an audio recording made of the Quarry Men on
the very day that John and Paul were introduced. A book signing will follow
the presentation. Rodriguez is a pop culture historian. He’s written or
contributed to nine books. He’s also a featured speaker at the annual Fest
for Beatles Fans in Chicago.

Through the Eyes of Hubble *
Tuesday, May 6, 7 p.m.
The Hubble Space Telescope has had more impact on astronomy and
the public’s awareness of astronomy than any other telescope in history.
Michelle Nichols from the Adler Planetarium will present some of the wellknown, and not-so-well-known, images and science from the last 23 years
of Hubble’s mission. Michelle will also provide a sneak peek at Hubble’s
2018 replacement: the James Webb Space Telescope.
No-Bake Summer Desserts *
Tuesday, May 13, 7 p.m.
Join us in welcoming back Pastry Chef Rose Deneen as she demonstrates
how to create easy, no-bake summer treats. Learn how to make a lemon
mousse pie, summer fruit pudding and more. Recipes and delicious

Waking Ned Devine
Tuesday, March 25, 2 p.m., Ages 18 and up
Tully More is a quiet little Irish village, so when it’s
announced that the winner of the National Lotto
is a local, it shouldn’t take long to figure out who
the lucky winner is. Unfortunately it’s poor Ned
Devine, who was so shocked by the news his heart
gave out on him. It’s up to his friends to keep the
prize money close to home – in memory of Ned, of
course. So long as the lotto officials don’t catch on…

Twelfth Night
Tuesday, April 22, 2 p.m., Ages 18 and up
Shipwrecked and alone, Viola disguises herself as
a boy and becomes a servant of Orsino, Duke of
Illyria, whom she quickly falls in love with. Orsino
is madly in love with Lady Olivia, and sends his
new servant to court her, but things begin to fall
apart when Olivia falls in love with the messenger
instead. One of Shakespeare’s funniest comedies
is played to the hilt by Ben Kingsley, Helena
Bonham Carter, Richard E. Grant and more.

Tuesday, May 27, 2 p.m., Ages 18 and up
Based on a true story from the 1920s, Angelina
Jolie plays Christine Collins, a woman searching
for her missing child. The LAPD presents her with
a boy of the right age, but she insists this isn’t her
son. Collins struggles against the police cover-up
while continuing to hold out hope that she will find
her boy. (Rated R, 141 min.)

and Laurie Berkner. The Library’s Children’s Music Collection is
now located near the Children’s Activity Room to allow parents the
opportunity to browse the collection while their children browse for

math facts and problem-solving strategies. The songs represent
a wide variety of musical styles that are appealing to children,
including a skip-counting hip-hop song sung in bug voices and an
addition/subtraction train track with a country twang.

Tuesday, April 15 is the filing deadline for 2013 Income
Taxes. Tax forms are not available at the Library but are
easily accessible online at www.irs.gov (federal) and
tax.illinois.gov (state). Online forms may be accessed at
the Library and printed for 10¢ per page.

As you’re cleaning your home this
spring, be on the lookout for books,
CDs and DVDs that you no longer
need. The Library’s Used Book Sale is
always looking for donations to add
to the sale shelves in our lower level
lobby. Donations are accepted at
our Circulation Desk. Receipts for tax
purposes are available upon request.
All proceeds from the Used Book Sale
benefit the Library. More than $5,000
was received in 2013.
