Ah, yes, when the frost is on the pumpkin!!!! No pumpkins here, but there sure
has been frost, maybe only really noticeable to golfers and gardeners, but we
sure have had it. As of this writing (Jan. 10) we have had 13 golf frost delays
with more in the forecast. We had 7 delays in December and six thus far in
January. The only day that prevented 14 consecutive days was a nice break on
Christmas day.

Mario did some “historical research,” for me and all the trivia buffs, and says
that this is the most frost delays we have had at least in the past three years. We
had 10 frost delays in the 2010-2011 season, 8 days in 2011-2012.

As you might expect, Southern California Edison isn’t done with PDG yet. In
all, Edison has 19 “phases” scheduled for our community, three of which have been completed. The most recent
phases completed were 2 and 4. Edison has told us that as money, time and the inclination come together, they
will be back again. Apparently they are coming together sooner than expected, by anyone, and they may return
in a month or two. This is not definite, so don’t hang your hat(s) on the time frame.
Speaking of Edison, I can’t begin to tell you how many homeowners have questioned why the new transformers
(those big green boxes) have to be above ground. Well, here’s the reason: Actually, there are a few, 1) people
tended to use the below-ground openings for waste disposal; 2) when Edison workers needed to do any maintenance work, there was always the danger of standing water and “junk” in general.
Neighborhood Watch and Security want to make sure we all take notice of any strangers we see wandering the
area. It only takes a phone call to security to put your mind, and ours, at ease.

We are certain at this point that SCE will soon continue their upgrades (Phases
3 and 5) which are smaller projects than the ones just completed. As mentioned
in President Hanks’ article, we just don’t have dates certain yet.
Now that we are “in season” let me remind you that we have rules for good
reason. Make sure that you and your guests wear proper attire when on the golf
course, the putting area, and the practice area. Reports have been coming in that
some are wearing jeans while playing golf. Granted, they offer warmth during
these frosty mornings, but they are not allowed. Do yourself and your guests
a favor; avoid a potential embarrassing moment because of non-compliance.

the Restaurant/Lounge/Clubhouse, which is also posted.)
Unrepaired divots and ball marks on the course are becoming excessive, so
much so, that it is taking its toll on the course. Your friends and neighbors
have organized a divot-filling party because you failed to fill your own divots
and repair your own ball marks. We all take pride in the condition of the golf

A Homeowner came into my office the other day to advise that someone may or may not have entered his home and had possibly
taken something of value. We had a pleasant conversation and it was learned
that he had locked his door when he left, but admitted that he didn’t always
do that. He also confessed to me that last month someone took his new laptop
computer from his unlocked vehicle that was parked in his driveway. This
spurred a conversation about how many people don’t bother to lock up their
homes and vehicles. He suggested that I write about this in my next article for
the PDG Newsletter. I laughed and remarked about how often I mention this
topic in my articles and said that I didn’t want to BEAT A DEAD HORSE.

I have spoken with numerous victims of these thefts, and they always seem to

from the side of a house. These thieves are not HORSING AROUND. If it’s
not “nailed down” they will take it. Lock your homes and vehicles. Don’t give
them the opportunity to steal something of yours.
Like you, I ask myself, “Who are these people that are stealing from us?” I
doubt highly that one of our Seniors is sneaking around in the wee hours of
the morning, looking through parked cars, or taking someone’s bike. So what
does that leave us? In past cases, it has been Visitors or Relatives that have
been caught or suspected of these thefts. It is up to all of you, along with Security, to stay aware of anything suspicious and report it.
I have been questioned about the probability of people crawling over our fences. Others offer the Gardeners as suspects. After 6:00PM, all Vendors are supposed to be out of PDG. If you see them in here, report them to Security. As
for the walls, we have no reason to believe that anyone is coming in this way,
and we have no way of monitoring this. Although, we did have a suspect that
“escaped” over the chain link fence into Suncrest when he was discovered
taking things from an unlocked vehicle. The “Free Exit” Back Gate has also
been the subject of concern. That gate, like the Front Gate has unrestricted
exiting. Our problem isn’t how they’re getting out, it is how they’re getting in.
I tend to believe that it is someone staying here, legally or illegally.
Statistics prove that the vast majority of thefts occur when the objects stolen
are exposed and unprotected. I am doing my best to make you aware of this.
But as the ole saying goes, YOU CAN LEAD A HORSE TO WATER, BUT
YOU CAN’T MAKE HIM DRINK.

Our dedicated and tireless Vice President (and Rules Committee Chairman!) John
Coyle provided the following for this report. Please take the time to read and
appreciate what he and other Members of your Men’s Club are doing to help us
all enjoy our golfing experience even more . . . as we continue to enjoy (or not)
the challenge of the game itself!
“Your Men’s Golf Club is proud to host Larry Bohannan, the Desert Sun’s golf
writer, as our guest speaker at the General Membership Meeting on Feb.19. Larry has hobnobbed with the greats and not-so-greats in the world of golf, and has a
wealth of stories and observations from his long career. Tell all your friends, and
let’s have a big appreciative crowd for one of our really good local journalists.
“Also at our Feb.19 meeting, Nominating Committee Chair Buck Davis will
again present the slate of candidates for office, and will solicit additional nominations from the floor. Nominations will then be closed; the Election Committee

Have you been to your Restaurant recently? Ken and I attended Friday
night dinner a short while ago. Chef Mark has prepared a fairly extensive
menu for us to enjoy. He has specials to offer as well as the regular fare
which includes a large selection of comfort food. I was having a craving
for fried food that night so I opted for the tempura style shrimp. Ken ordered a steak, but I know he likes the liver, too. I don’t know where he
finds them, but Mark purchases beautiful cuts of meat. The steak melted
in Ken’s mouth. I’ve had the Filet Mignon in the past and I agree; this
beef does, indeed, melt in your mouth. The Prime Rib dinners occurring
the last Wednesday of every month is a meal to lavish upon yourselves.
You deserve the very best life has to offer and this dining delight is one
fabulous way to do it. I know many of you attend regularly as you stop
to chat with me or call me on the phone to tell me of your joy with your
dining experience.
The Evaro Brothers are still packing them in during the regular Wednesday
Night Club. And, let’s face it; dancing is an enjoyable form of exercise, so
while you’re being social and dining over a delicious meal, you can work
off a few extra calories by kicking up your heels to the rhythmic beat of
their exciting sounds.
Lunches also offer an extensive menu. Mark reminds me that whether it
be lunch or dinner, if there is something you don’t see on the menu, but
the kitchen has the ingredients, they’ll be happy to whip it up for you. Our
Restaurant is pleased to go out of their way to cater to your every desire.
And, if you’re not pleased about anything, don’t be afraid to make your
voice heard. They want to know from you if there is some way to improve
on your meal or service.
Our Bartenders are trained mixologists and gifted conversationalists. They
work very hard and add to the pleasure of sitting relaxed at the bar enjoying a libation. We have a beautiful bar. Come in for a drink.
One of my most favorite meals is our Sunday Brunch. Rarely a Sunday
goes by that you won’t find us there. I like to start brunch with a cocktail.
We also offer an endless glass of champagne at minimal cost. And, it’s
great to see all the happy faces of friends and neighbors. Usually on the
omelet buffet, Maria cooks your eggs to order. She is an incredibly sweet
woman who listens to your every request. We offer a large assortment of
condiments such as shrimp, white and green onions, jalapeño, spinach,
ham, bell pepper, mushrooms, cilantro, black olives, and tomatoes. Maria
will top it all off with cheese if you want, too. As you move down the line
you’ll find sausages and bacon, potatoes O’Brien (my personal fave), biscuits and gravy. There are two different salsas to choose from; one regular
and one HOT!
Then, there’s the fruit platter, blintzes, freshly baked Danish pastries and,
now get this, this is great, a new addition to the menu . . . Eggs Benedict!

Computer Club
Happy Valentines Day! Isn’t it great to be able to go our computers and
send lovely cards to those we love?
No longer do we have to stand in front of the store display looking for the
perfect card and then apologize when we have put shopping off till the last
minute. In the matter of a few minutes, sitting comfortably at home we can
create the most beautiful cards anyone could imagine and know that they
will be received in an instant.
We mourn the passing of Frank Gottschalk who was a Charter Member
of the Computer Club and Director of Computer Club Learning Center.
Frank was also a great teacher and a good friend to all who knew him.
We welcome Ron Dingman who will assume Frank’s position as the Director of the Learning Center and will also teach certain classes. Welcome
aboard Ron.
Classes in the learning center got off to a slow start this year but are now
in full swing and several new classes are being introduced.
Sign up sheets are on the table at the front of the room during regular
meetings.
When we have enough students for a particular class a teacher is contacted
and a time is set. The students are then called and informed. Six students
maximum per class.
Computer Club general meetings are held on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of
each month at 9AM in the Clubhouse, unless that Thursday falls on a holiday such as Thanksgiving or Christmas. Any changes will be announced
on Channel 98.
General meetings consist of an approximately 20 minute presentation followed by a question and answer period, 50/50 drawing and round table
discussion. Coffee and cookies are served at this time.
Yearly dues are $15.00. Everyone is welcome. We look forward to seeing
you at the meetings.

life. We are very fortunate that we have the Braille Institute right here in the desert.
Since 1919, the Braille Institute has given thousands of visually-impaired people
“Solutions in Sight” so that they can live satisfying, fulfilling lives.
They offer an amazing range of classes and workshops to help build skills to gain or
regain your independence, which is FREE to anyone who has low vision or whose

brain are effected by dementia; 3) skills and techniques to provide effective care.

Gosh! Show time is fast approaching and will be here before we know it. Remember

25th at 7:00p.m. in the Clubhouse. There will be cabaret style seating again and
drinks may be purchased before showtime and during intermission.
The singers and dancers are in full rehearsals as I write. We have a CLOSED REHEARSAL policy and we ask for your cooperation. If you know what we’re doing

ON A MORE SERIOUS NOTE: The Entertainer’s Club is missing many of our
costumes from the Clubhouse storage area. These costumes were purchased by Lynn
Fox over the years and belong to the Entertainer’s Club. It would be appreciated if
ALL present PDG Dancers and former Foxy Ladies would check your closets for
costumes that should have been turned in at the end of 2009/2010. If any other club
or organization has borrowed them or seen them, please let me know so they can be
accounted for. The costumes in question are: Blue Velour, 2 pc (‘Trolley’ and ‘Razzle/Dazzle’); Red with gold sequin trim (No Business Like Show Business), Black

briefs and hats (Singing In the Rain). As president of the Entertainer’s Club I have

Hello 2013, the Mayan calendar notwithstanding!
On December 10, 2012 we played our first match at Ivey Ranch. Both Mary Ann
Hendry and Jan Voirol placed third in their respective flights and brought home the
bacon. Great work gals. Even though play took a long time, overall it was a good
experience for the seven new members and five returning members.
On Thursday, January 17, 2013 we will play the second match of the year at Oasis
Country Club. It is always a good time so those members playing are looking forward to this match. And lets hope that the good weather holds (last year was rained
out). Results next month.
Our schedule gets busy at this time of year so Tip is already asking for members
chosen to play Portola on February 4th and Tri Palms on Friday, February 22nd to
sign in and pay up. Checks should be made out to Cactus Cats in the amount of $35

On Saturday, January 19th we will hold our first (of two) Playdays for the year. We
will hold a business meeting at 10:30 AM in the Recreation Center followed by golf
at 12:30 PM. Come see our new logo and order a shirt. After golf we’ll have appetizers (provided by the club) and libations (BYOB) at the Recreation Center.
Remember to check the bulletin board in the Golf Information Center for current assignments!!! We want as many members as possible to have the opportunity to play.

Shuffleboard Club
We are very saddened by the recent passing of two “giants” of Shuffleboard, Frank Gottschalk and Jack Merrow. Both of them were excellent,
long time, players and were frequent winners as partners and individually.
Jack had not played these last few years; but those who have played with
him remember him well and fondly, earning him the nickname of “The
Grand Old Man of Shuffleboard”. And many of us more recently enjoyed
the Great 101st Celebration of his birth, that his wife Dorothy gave him a
year ago.
Like Jack, Frank too had a tremendous zeal for the game of shuffleboard.
He was a great competitor with a thorough knowledge of the game. Moreover, he was a prime mover in bringing about the construction of the PDGCC Shuffleboard Building. He also served as President of the Club and
was an elected Member of the PDGCC Board of Directors. Frank participated in many local Coachella Valley competitions year after year, and
recently received medals in the State of California Senior Games. His winnings in California had earned him a place in the National Competitions;
and he had looked forward to playing in Cleveland, Ohio later this year.
We shall miss his enthusiasm and presence.
The Coachella Valley Hi-Ten Season is in full swing. with a compliment of
snowbirds and year around residents making up our Team. Twelve Members comprise the squad with solid representation filling in as substitutes.
Those who have competed so far this year are: Esther Bergquam, Joe Coady, Dan Chiernyk, Joe Dion, Mark Helvig, Sherman McKinniss, Byron
Reider, Bill Rindone, Lars Sjoholm, Linda Goodman, Dean De Lap, Gary
Adams, Ray Goodman, Roger Gould, and Juanita Manning.
Two games are played on weekly assigned dates, each win worth one
point. At this writing, PDGCC is in sixth place (ten teams in the Conference), while last year we were ninth. So, significant improvement has
taken place. Eight contests will have been completed at the end of January,
leaving only two games to play in February, one at Ramon of Cathedral
City and the other at Royal Palms Happy Gang in Palm Springs.
Next month we will report the success of our participants in the District
Five Shufflers Association Rookie Tournament. Individuals from all
Clubs are eligible to play if they are beginners this calendar year. The District Five schedule also includes a Doubles Tournament (partners playing
against partners) in early February. This Tournament coincides, somewhat
unfortunately, with our again hosting the Regional Senior games. Spectators are welcome to attend. Keep tuned in by watching Channel 98 and
checking with Club Members
Our local Member Team Tournaments make Friday our busiest day of the
week. The current tournament will end on February 8; and a new one will
begin on February 22. Sign-up sheets are on the bulletin board. Anyone is
welcome to participate on other days, but Club Membership is required to
play on a Team in our Friday Tournaments. This is a friendly competition
and a lot of fun. If you are not yet a Member, or even not yet a shuffler,
drop in and watch a while. (It is also a time you can get a feel for the Partnership Tournaments mentioned above.) Then join our Club and come play
with us.!

Annual Charity Golf Tournament
The “wearing and spreading of the green” is coming up sooner than
the leprechauns can fill the pots of gold so get a jump start and
purchase your commemorative block now to support our designated charity, the Desert Cancer Foundation. The blocks will be set in
the ground at the entrance to the 1st tee and a special unveiling
will be held the morning of the tournament. This is such a special
way to honor a loved one, celebrate a special occasion or just to let
someone know how much you appreciate them. At the same time,
you are contributing to such a worthwhile cause and creating a legacy for all to enjoy. Did you know that Disneyland sold out of their
memory blocks for their new section faster than Minnie and Mickey
could get to the front gate to greet people! Please contact any of the

Women’s Golf Club
New Dimensions
One of the first things I would like to address is the speed with which our frost delays President, Beverly McGill, Vice President, Erma Hanks and the New Diare posted on Channel 98. I think we all appreciate not having to get ready to play
mensions officers and committee chairpersons accomplish so much for the
golf, only to find there is a frost delay. Kudos to whomever is so efficient.
The Cross Country game originally scheduled for April 23 will be played on February
5. This will replace Beat-the-Pro day that will then be played on April 23. Bob says
he’s too busy in the Pro Shop with all the tournaments in February and March and
doesn’t have time to play and practice. We are formidable opponents.
We hope that you have had a chance to sign up for the annual Spring Fling tournament to be held on February 16. This tournament sells out quickly every year. The
format will be a Scramble (always fun—no matter what your golfing abilities). The
$35 entry fee includes tournament prizes, breakfast snacks, and lunch!
Once again, the Spring Fling is sponsored by the LaDonna Keaton Team. This group
of realtors is always giving to our community; so if you see one of these realtors,
please say “howdy” and “thank you.”

our Restaurant staff needs equipment, they often ask New Dimensions,
which helps keep our homeowner dues low. New Dimensions purchased
the new karaoke television monitor for the Clubhouse. We appreciated
it at our December General meeting when Sugar Grassi led us in singing
Christmas Carols. Laurie Gross took the mike for “O Holy Night” and
George La Goe led “Walking in a Winter Wonderland”. Nine “Festival
of Lights” winners were announced: Donna Buffington and Shirl Wilkins,
Patricia Bustad, Paul and Beverly Carper, Donna Coggan and Rich Gerow,
Brian and Cathy Gray, Howard and Kay Rickus, Bill and Sue Rindone,
Roy Skultin and Darcy Quimby, and Carol and Dale Young. Congratulations to the winners and our gratitude to everyone in PDGCC who decorated. Every year, PDGCC gets brighter and more beautiful at the holiday
season.

send cards so that these members know that everyone is concerned and wishes the
best for them.

“snow globe” dessert, adorned with a snowflake cookie. Beverly McGill
described it as a snow crusted globe that just burst with flavor as you took
the first bite and you went, WOW! Disc Jockey, Michael Farber, of Music Media enticed everyone out on the floor and the majority of revelers
stayed through the last dance. Kudos to Carol Schaefer and Donna Glasser
LoBianco for chairing this special event. Their helpers were Carol and
Ken Dobson, Erma and Dennis Hanks, Carol and Mike Venerable, Bob
Brownell, Joan Sorenson, Pat Smith, Billie Cheshire, Bev McGill and as
always, Sugar and Bobby Grassi. The evening was a succession of memorable moments and if you missed it this year, plan on attending in 2013.
Pete Widman has been our Pull Tab Captain for the past seven years and
he did an amazing job. Jeane Rawson is assuming the responsibility and
her enthusiasm indicates that the Ronald McDonald House will continue
to benefit. Just put your pull tabs in the bucket on Jeane’s front porch at
39-090 Cudy Circle or bring them to a New Dimensions meeting on the
2nd Tuesday at 7:00 PM. The meetings are free with good entertainment
planned by Lela Buffington. Come join us at the February 12th meeting.
The entertainment will set the mood for Valentine’s Day and Norm and
Paula Koster will have an assortment of cookies and drinks for you. This
is an opportunity to meet people and make new friends. We hope to see

Artist of the Month
Carol Cole
I’ve always dabbled in art in some form or another. In college I majored in Marketing and Advertising Design. The marketing training
has served me well in my business career and the art training has
provided me with a lot of personal pleasure and stress relief.
I have been working with Hard Shell gourds for many years. This
year I started specializing in pet portraits on the gourds. In 2012 I
started going to our Art Club meetings. We had a water color artist
instructor for most of the summer. I am hooked! I love working with
Water Colors. I’ve joined the Coachella Valley Water Color Society
and through that organization have begun to paint “Plein Air” with
their Field Mice Group. It’s such a challenge to visit different venues and create a painting from sketch to completion in a couple of
hours.
On my first outing we visited Cabot’s Pueblo in Desert Hot Springs.
It rained and was very chilly, but we managed to complete our work
and have a great time. I’m just at the beginning of this journey and I
have a lot to learn. The painting featured is Cabot’s Pueblo. I hope
you enjoy it.

Roadrunners Golf Club
First of all we thank Sue McVicker for opening her home to all the Roadrunners on
the 18th of December for a bit of Christmas Cheer, and Sue thanks each member that
brought goodies to share for the special occasion. Everyone enjoyed chatting and
getting to know members during the gathering.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to our past president Mary Lou Lynch and her husband Jim because of the tragic loss of their son Brad and his girlfriend in an accident
in the Columbia River Gorge.
The Club Championship is scheduled on March 19 and 26, and to qualify to compete
you must have played 12 games in the past 12 months on Tuesdays during regular
play. There is a list in the Golf Shop with names of qualified members, check it out.
If you do not qualify you can still sign up to play but not in the competition.
A short bio of Sharon (Shar) Sylvester. She was born in Medesto, California in 1940,
she and her brother grew up in Oakland. She married Gary Sylvester at age 16,
continued Fremont High School and graduated in 1957. She attended Oakland City
College and raised her three children, Ken, Keith and Kristi.
She worked for Lockheed in Sunnyvale, CA, from 1975 to 1997 where she was a
financial cost and budget analyst interfaced with the navy negotiating contracts. Gary
also worked at Lockheed and was Electrical Engineer Supervisor.
Shar has 6 grandsons (yes, no granddaughters) and there is a set of twins. She enjoys
all of them and spends as much time as possible with them. Shar and Gary have lived
in Palm Desert Greens since 2001 and she enjoys playing at Golf. This is the 4th
season she has chaired the Social Committee and she does a great job negotiating the
meals that go along with our special events.
Shar and Gary have been married for 57 years!

Neighborhood Watch meets bi-monthly on the 4th Monday in the Palm
Room at 2:30 PM. Please attend our meeting on March 25 and join Neighborhood Watch to be a good neighbor watching out for neighbors.
Neighborhood Watch is part of the National Sheriff Association and Sheriff Deputy, Stacey Austin, and PDG Security Chief, Bob Russell, attend
our meetings to present the area crime statistics and to advise us on security measures. We have had recent criminal activity with entry gained
through unlocked doors or through unlocked patio doors. Lock your doors
and place a pole or piece of plastic pipe in the track of your sliders. If you
need help with this, call a Neighborhood Watch officer’s phone number
listed below.
The Neighborhood Watch network helps locate lost pets, too. Recently, a
dog escaped through an open gate and was run over by a car. Check your
gate latches to be certain they are aligned and working properly.
The Sheriff’s Department offers free home security evaluations with advice to make your home safer. You can call and arrange this service at
760-836-1616. Join Neighborhood Watch and get a warning sticker for
your front window. We need the help of all residents and membership is
free with no dues. Neighborhood Watch, the Emergency Response Team
and COPS work together in emergencies.

The putting course is in excellent shape and highlighted with new red and

Rule Reminder
Gus is full of fun and mischief. When you are on the putting course and
your ball pops in and out of the hole, it’s not always just a misfortunate
putt, more often than not; it is Gus knocking it back out with his furry, little
paw. For you see, his home is under the putting course and he resents having our members walking around on his roof. So he does his best to disrupt
our fun. I feel certain that he is laughing as he scurries from hole to hole.
Over the summer, Gus found other fun adventures. Don Risk photographed
him popping out of the ground and scaring the devil out of the SCE employees working along the Parkway; no one is safe from this furry prankster.
We are still excepting new members. This year our membership has flourished with old (sorry, returning) and new members, of over 120 players.
However, don’t let that bother you. On any given Wednesday, only about
60 will show up to play. Just come down to the Clubhouse on a Wednesday
at 1pm, pay the $10 membership fee and .75 cents weekly for tournament
play. If you get a hole in one, you will get back .25 cents for each one you
make.
All you need is a putter and a ball; bring a partner or come as a single, no
problem; we will get you a playing buddy. You can purchase a red club
shirt or wear your own with white bottoms and soft soled shoes. No experience needed. We’ll be happy to have you join us and you will be happy
you did.

Our Sunday Twilight Tennis on December 30th was fun but challenging. It was
VERY cold with a breeze to give it that extra sting. John and Yvonne Barrett
came to the rescue by hosting a last minute get-together at their lovely home
where we could get warm and share our snacks and libations. Thanks John and
Yvonne, you saved the evening. We still had fun chilly tennis but the after-tennis
get-together at the Barretts really topped it off! The start time for this Twilight
Tennis is now 4:00pm. Just show up to play and bring a snack to share after play.
Sadly George Broderick passed away on Christmas Eve. Our Tennis Club members remember George as “one of our best!”
Bob and Bette Ericsson had a special Christmas by going to the Mission Inn and
enjoying a romantic dinner and stay. Afterwards they headed for Texas to the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio to cheer for the Oregon Beavers college football team.
The very talented quarterback, Sean Mannion, just happens to be their grandson.
Those of us watching the game from home here at PDG were sure cheering for
a win.
We had another fun tournament on December 16th. Bob Brownell does a GREAT
job organizing these tournaments where everyone has a good time and gets to
play lots of tennis. Our winners were: Courts 1 and 2 Willard Bronson 1st place;
Bob Ericsson and Bob Larsen tied for 2nd place. Courts 3 and 4 Sara McCallum
1st place; Ken Miracle 2nd place. Courts 5 and 6 Louise Forsythe 1st place; Sue

The Tennis Club has purchased a brick to benefit the charity Desert Cancer Foundation. This foundation takes care of folks in the Valley who cannot pay. The
wording for the brick was voted on at the January 8th meeting. It will be located
at the entry way to the number one tee box. The wording will be as follows:

PDG Tennis Club
The yearly “Steak Fry” will be held on Wednesday, March 20th. This is a change
from previous years when it was held on Fridays. Only Tennis Club members
can attend and Wednesday accommodates more of our members’ schedule. The
cost is $10 and is held at the basketball courts at the Recreation Center. You bring
your own table settings. This has been a tradition for the end of the season farewell for most of our snow birds.
In baseball they call it the (DL) Disabled List; in football they have the (IR) Injured Reserve List; here at PDG Tennis we have the (TDL) Temporary Disabled
List. In this section we report the following: Bob Leasure; Diane Jones; Maxine Alderman, and Carol Nunes. This is just to say the Tennis Club members
thoughts are with you and wish you speedy recoveries.
PDG monthly tournaments are scheduled for the 2nd or 3rd Sunday of the month.
The actual date is decided at the monthly tennis meeting. If you are reading this
article and interested in playing in the February tournament, you can contact Bob
Brownell at 760 861-1148. You should be a tennis club member to play in the
tournament. A pot luck usually follows the tournament where you would bring
a main dish, salad, or dessert. January’s tournament was held Sunday, January

13. Remember if you want to include a guest in the tournament, you must go
through Bob Brownell first to be sure there are available spots. Guests will pay
$5 to enter, are eligible to win, and can bring a dish to share or pay an additional
$5 in lieu of bringing a dish.

Pickleball Club
Reality has hit; 2013 is here; so get those New Years resolutions out and start
keeping the resolutions you made to become a healthier you in 2013.
What better way than to become a member of our Pickleball Club. Three of our
members have lost a total of 50 pounds. Good job Pete Paris, Glenda Johnson and
Gary Foley. It’s a great cardio workout, lots of fun and will cost you only $10.00
for a year filled with fun. Let us help you to become healthier in 2013.
The Club held its first round-robin tournament. Coming in First Place was Ron
Schmeck, Second Place went to Pete Paris and Farmer. What a great tournament
Fred and Carol Nunes set up for us; hope you got the next one planned.
It’s that time of the year again. The 2nd year of Valley Team Play is starting up
in January. We will be playing different Country Clubs twice a month. The way
it works is that we are given a schedule of teams to be played during the next
3 months. We call the captain of scheduled Country Clubs and arrange where,
when and the caliber of collective teams. Example, Some Country Clubs want
to play their top players. Other Country Club’s might want to play only socially.
Some want 8 players or some 4. So 2 times a month we check with appointed
team Captains and set the play. This was a lot of fun last year, the first year. When
we play the other teams after a few games, we mix everyone on both teams and
just have some good fun. So pretty much some we get a mix of competitive play
and then some good fun meeting new friends.
Bocci Ball Club
Hard to believe it’s already Super Bowl. Marlene Flattum and her crew are
still hard at work for our Februayr 18th “Roundup” Picnic.
Western attire is optional. Ride ‘em cowboys and cowgirls. This year we’re
asking three dollars from everyone when you sign up. This is in lieu of the
traditional potluck.
Geno’s classes are still transforming players, and if any of you have the
time check them out. They’re currently 10AM Tuesdays. These classes
help new and experienced players develop skills and team strategies. Certainly a worthwhile investment of time.
The Bocci Food Drive for the Coachella Valley Rescue Mission netted
nearly 600 pounds of food, not to mention citrus and toys. The largest
contribution yet. Nearly 1000 meals were served. The look on the faces of
well fed children who often aren’t, reminds us what the season can mean.
Good job everyone and thanks.
Don’t forget Ron Schmeck will be bringing his “Big Star Night” performance to
Palm Desert Greens on February 17th at 7:00 pm at the Clubhouse. Doors will

Women’s Club
Palm Desert Greens Women’s Club is entering its 38th year and has continued
to be one of the most active and philanthropic clubs in the community. I am
sure we will have another outstanding year. Our new Executive Board was
sworn in at the January General Meeting held at the Oasis Country Club. Our
new President is LaDonna Keaton, Vice-President Carol Schaefer, Secretary
Marilyn Bergeson and returning as Treasurer is Sheila Weldon.

But before I go on, let me thank the outgoing Board, Lola Breeze, Joyce
Stashak, Sheila Weldon and all the committee members for the work they did
the last few years. PDG Women’s Club, in essence, holds a party each month
with their themed luncheons. Every month a group of ladies decorate each
dining table, sell raffle prizes, call members, book entertainment and make
sure everyone has a delicious meal. In addition, this year Lola organized participation in the Golf Cart Parade, the 40th Anniversary Celebration and the
charity tournament. She and her committees have given countless hours of
their time and they deserve our thanks.
At the December General Meeting held at Oasis Country Club, President
Breeze called her outgoing Executive Board and committee members up to
the podium, thanked them for their help and support and presented them with
gifts. The Executive Board members from the last three years that served
with President Breeze honored her as well with a gift. Then the party started. The December Luncheon has traditionally been the Christmas Party and
this year the theme was “The 12 days of Christmas”. Judy Robinson and her
committee outdid themselves with the whole event. The tables were decorated with bottles of wine wrapped in beautiful netting with partridges and
pear ornaments on a charger. 130 women were present, some in their colorful
Christmas sweaters. This was not by accident, because this year, on President
Breeze’s prodding, “A Christmas Sweater contest” was held. Several women
modeled their holiday finest. The judges deemed Billie Villa’s sweater the
Funniest, Pam Mara’s, the Prettiest, Patty Moss’s, the Most Glamorous and
Barb Piercey’s, the Most Eye-catching.
To keep with the festive feeling, our own Sugar Grassi sang Christmas carols and led the audience in song. We then dined on Steak Diane which was
superb, and Strawberry Shortcake. Usually that would be the end, but the
organizers had one more thing up their sleeve. All the guests participated in a
rendition of the 12 days of Christmas. Each table was given a day, and when
it was their turn to sing, they all popped out of their seats, some even added
choreography to their verse. Before they left, all guests were given a gift to
take home. Many commented that it was one of the best and we have Judy
Robinson, Kim Lauer, Jackie Wood and Lola for making it that way.
Judy Robinson has been writing this article for the last few years. I have so
enjoyed reading her descriptions of the luncheons; she has the ability to bring
the words to life. It will be big shoes to step into but I will try. I plan on reporting on the luncheons but also important news from the Board meetings.
Here’s the first important newsflash. The Board has decided that there will be
no fund raiser for the Library this year. Presently, the Library fund has enough
money to sustain it, so the Board (with the approval of incoming President
Keaton) decided to forgo the dinner/dance this year. This means that there will
be a March luncheon General Meeting.
I will be writing next month about the Installation Luncheon and a personal
look at our new Board members.

CALL TO ORDER: President Dennis Hanks called the Regular Board Meeting to order at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, December 18, 2012. The meeting was
held in the Clubhouse.

PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Parliamentarian Dottie Mills led in reciting
the Pledge of Allegiance.
ROLL CALL: Secretary Dixon noted the following were present: President
Dennis Hanks, Vice President Sherman McKinniss, Secretary Liz Dixon, Treasurer Mal Sinclair, Director Audrey Green, Director Sara McCallum, Director
Don Risk, Parliamentarian Dottie Mills, General Manager Roberta Reynolds
and Assistant General Manager Sara Fenimore.
PRESIDENT’S COMMENTS:
Southern California Edison (SCE) is finishing the electrical upgrades of Phases
2 and 4. The Association has submitted claims to the civil contractors for damages sustained on the #5 greenbelt and Recreation Center greenbelt. Although
it is rumored that SCE will be receiving more funding for Phases 3 and 5, the

Association has not been notified of start/completion dates.
The Board has been made aware that the pool filters at the Recreation Center
need to be replaced. The new filters will require additional piping, thus costing
more than originally budgeted in the Reserve Fund.
Old copper piping was replaced in the water fountain at the Recreation Center,
and new “cross traffic” signs have been installed at the back gate (Frank Sinatra Drive).
The Association recently received a nice compliment from a Canadian Golf
Course Designer regarding the condition of the golf course after the irrigation
project completed in October 2012.
EXECUTIVE MEETINGS:
The Board of Directors held Executive Meetings on November 27, December
3 and December 11, 2012 to discuss legal matters, contracts, personnel and
homeowner hearings.

Secretary Dixon moved to approve the Minutes of the Regular Board
Meetings held on November 27, and December 1, as written. The motion
was seconded by Director McCallum and carried (4 For: President Hanks,
Vice President McKinniss, Secretary Dixon, and Director McCallum; 0
Nay; 3 Abstain: Treasurer Sinclair was absent for the November 27, and
December 1, 2012 Meetings; and Director Green and Director Risk were
not seated members of the Board of Directors November 27, and December 1, 2012).
Treasurer Sinclair moved to accept the unaudited Financial Report for
November 2012. The motion was seconded by Vice President McKinniss
and carried (7 For: President Hanks, Vice President McKinniss, Secretary
Dixon, Treasurer Sinclair, Director Green, Director McCallum, and Director Risk; 0 Nay).
GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT:
Our staff members were given their Holiday Appreciation Gifts. We know you
have many choices, and our employees are extremely grateful that you have
included them in your holiday giving. Thank you.
Thanks also to the PDG Women’s Club for replacing the bulky television in
the Administration Office with a new flat screen TV. It’s surprising how much
more room we seem to have in the reception area.
Remedial work has begun at the Retention Basin. DandP Engineering estimates
completion shortly after the beginning of the year.

Phases 2 and 4 of SCE’s 19-Phase renovation project are nearing completion.
Once PAR has completed installing the new cable, the cut-over outages will
begin on 12-19, 12-27, 12-28, and 12-29. Thank you for your patience during
this stage of construction.

Our residents are pleased with the return of the Evaro Brothers for Wednesday
Club Night. The entire club was “rockin’ out” according to reports coming to
me. The updated lunch menu is receiving good reviews. Be sure to try some of
their new offerings.
The fence at the Southwest Pool will be replaced either this month or next.
There may be a couple of days when it will be closed.
Congratulations to newly elected Board Members Mal Sinclair, Audrey Green,
and Don Risk as they begin a new year of service to Palm Desert Greens.

Budget time is right around the corner. Some of the committees are already
setting project priorities for the coming fiscal year. The Budget Committee will
review them, and determine if they can be done this year or in the future, or, if
they are at all feasible. Budget Request Forms are available in the Administration Office and should be returned by no later than mid to late January.
Secretary Dixon noted receipt of the following correspondence:

The Desert Regional District will hold its thirteenth annual Palm Desert International Sports Festival and Senior Games February 7 – 10, 2013. We are
honored that Palm Desert Greens will be hosting the Shuffleboard competition
again this year. If you get a chance, obtain a schedule and root your home
teams to victory. They are quite fun!
It has been a pleasure working with the Board and Committees these past
years. One has only to look around to recognize the progress you have made.
You have shared your ideas with all of us; you have participated in our activities; and you have volunteered your services. This community would not be the
same without you.
We will be leaning on you again next year for your ideas, input and support.
We must be diligent in preserving and improving this wonderful community.

ARC: Chair Jerry Thomas reported that many residents are not submitting applications to the ARC for improvements on the outside of their homes, which
is in violation of the Association’s governing documents.
The Committee is investigating purchasing some new kitchen equipment that
Chef Mark finds necessary for increased productivity in the Restaurant.
Current holiday decorations must be removed by January 15, 2013.
The Committee meets at 8:30 am every Tuesday in the Association Office
Conference Room. No meetings on Tuesday, December 25, 2012 and January
1, 2013.
Clubhouse/Recreation Committee: Chair Beverly McGill reported the Committee met on December 5, 2012.
On the last Saturday of each month, Pickleball is offering a “bring a friend to
play day”. Pickleball will be conducting a fund raising event at the Clubhouse
on February 17, 2013, featuring Ron Schmeck’s “Big Star Night”. Tickets will
be available for this event on January 5 and 12, for $10 each.

Sales for November were $79,341, with 4,378 meals served.
Karaoke and BBQ Dinner are scheduled in the Clubhouse on Saturday, December 22, starting at 5:00 pm.
There will be no dinner service on Monday, December 24th, and the Restaurant
and Lounge will be closed on Tuesday, December 25th. Normal lunch hours
will resume on Wednesday, December 26th. No dinner service that evening.
Tickets are still available for New Dimensions’ “Snowflake Ball” on New
Year’s Eve. Additionally, there will be a buffet dinner in the Lounge from 5:00
pm to 6:30 pm.

Golf Committee: Chair Lynda Raible reported the Committee met on December 3, 2012.
The PDG Women’s Club will install the following new Officers on January 9,
2013: President La Donna Keaton, Vice President Carol Schaefer, Secretary
Marilyn Bergeson, and Treasurer Sheila Weldon.
The golf course is doing very well, and the Landscape Maintenance staff has
been busy fine tuning everything. If dry areas or overly wet areas are noticed,
please fill out a “Homeowner Comment” form in the Administration Office.

The Festival of Lights had 14 entries, of which eight (8) winners were awarded.
The new starter whistle is working well, however it is a bit harder to hear on
very cold days. Be sure to listen for it when it is around the time to tee off or
vacate the course.
Palm Springs Follies tickets for Friday, January 25, 2013 are still available.
Tickets are $51 per person, and this will be a matinee show.

Food and Beverage: Chair Greg Goodheart reported the Committee met on
December 10, 2012.
One of the subjects discussed at the meeting was the value of purchase. It had
come to the attention of one of the Committee Members that certain prices
seemed high for the food presented. Chef Mark assured the Committee that
some of the ingredients are of such high quality, that this justifies what appears
to be a costly menu item.
The Restaurant presents an extensive menu to keep offerings fresh, and the
patrons can request anything that doesn’t appear on the menu, as long as the
kitchen has the correct ingredients available.
Three (3) Wine Pairing Dinners are scheduled next year. This is an opportunity for you to relax and enjoy a high-end, gourmet dinner with a choice selec-

The Putting Club requested new flags on the putting green, as the numbers on
the current flags are hard to read when the flags are hanging down. The cost to
replace the flags is approximately $600. Each golf club agreed to donate $100
to purchase new flags that will stand out to the side, rather than hang down.

Landscape Committee: Committee Member Mary Lou Lynch reported in
Chair Marjorie Teaney’s absence.

Some of the projects the Committee discussed are: solar generated electric
power, Association Office expansion, Maintenance Yard expansion, Recreation
Center improvements, improvements to the restrooms on the golf course, and
emergency electric power supply(s).

Maintenance Advisory: Chair Carol Dobson reported the Committee met on
December 14, 2012.

The Committee discussed several issues, one being the prohibition of smoking
at the pools.
Maintenance Facilities Superintendent Mike Bridges and his staff were busy
last month, as always. In addition to regular maintenance, the crew repaired
damaged lighting at the front gate. When this was being repaired, a new
ground box was installed. The men’s sauna was repaired, some exercise equipment was repaired, signage at the back gate was installed, and Mike supervised
the professional cleaning of the Association Office’s carpet.
The Southwest pool was closed for several days last month due to a water
break. The pool passed the Health Department’s inspection; however the fencing around the pool did not pass inspection. The fencing must be replaced by
January 28, 2013. Additionally, due to new legislation, more signage will be
installed at each pool.
The Committee is in need of one (1) more Member. Committee Members are
required to attend each monthly meeting, and check all of the public facilities.
Reports of compliments, complaints or needed repairs will be discussed at the
next monthly meeting.
Security Committee: Chair Bob Grassi reported the Committee met on December 11, 2012.
Four (4) burglaries were reported last month, with a total of eight (8) burglaries year to date. (Burglaries are defined as entering a premises with intent to
commit a crime.)
COPS made over $400 at the Parking Lot Sale, and were able to purchase 18
new shirts for their volunteers.
The Committee discussed a Carfit Program in Palm Desert Greens. The Carfit
Program is in conjunction with AAA and AARP, and is a program that offers
older adults the opportunity to check how well their personal vehicles “fit”
them.
The Riverside County Office of Aging (RCOA) will be conducting a Carfit
training class at Eisenhower Medical Center on January 23, 2013 in which they

Director McCallum reminded the audience that there are so many things to be
thankful for, and wished them safe and Happy Holidays.
Director Risk thanked all of the residents who voted for him to become a
member of the Board of Directors. On behalf of the Putting Club, Bingo, and
Bocci Ball, 800 pounds of food was delivered to the Coachella Valley Rescue
Mission this morning, as well as numerous hand crocheted afghan blankets,
lovingly made/donated by someone who would like to remain anonymous.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Treasurer Sinclair thanked the residents for all of their well wishes and kind
thoughts during his recovery from surgery.
