BANDSTAND PROMENADE : THEN AND NOW
The Bandstand Promenade and Land’s End area in Bandra is not only well loved by the citizens
staying in the locality, but also by people all over Mumbai. From senior citizens and teenagers to
health aficionados and children, everyone enjoys a stroll down this beautiful promenade.
ARUP SARBADHIKARY
However, this was not always the case. Some years ago, Bandstand was on the verge
of being categorized as a dumping ground since debris was constantly being added to
the sea. But the citizens of the area decided to come together and take a stand to restore
Bandstand to its former glory. The construction of the promenade began with the assistance
of elected representatives like Shabana Azmi to start with and later over the years assitance
of Dilip Kumar, Sunil Dutt, Priya Dutt and Baba Siddique. It is thanks to the perseverance
of the residents, architects like P.K. Das and the ongoing support of representatives like
Baba Siddique that the promenade has become a cultural hub today. The aim was to make
Bandstand and Land’s End a community place which is easily accessible to everyone.
Bandra Fort was also restored as a heritage site which is now a cultural hub that hosts a
variety of events. Maintenance is a continuous process which is undertaken by the Bandra
Bandstand Resident’s Trust. In order to keep track of finances and progress of projects, the
trust believes in maintaining accounts and undergoes auditing regularly. The trust has various
plans to fortify and secure the promenade, which will begin once the monsoon season ends.

BEAT INFLATION WITH
AFFORDABLE VEGETABLES & FRUITS
The recent price rise on a variety of commodities has made life difficult for many. From petrol and vegetables
to railway fares, everyday necessities are becoming more and more expensive. In order to beat inflation, we
started with an initiative of setting up centres for selling vegetables and fruits at affordable prices on a weekly
basis. This fair price market is an important aspect for the community as fruits and vegetables should be
affordable for everyone.
Everything available at these centers are sold at approx. Rs.15 to Rs. 20 below market prices. Fresh vegetables
are brought from Vashi APMC and are thoroughly washed before they are put up for sale. These vegetables and
fruits are sold daily in some localities and on fixed days in areas like Pyari Nagar, Danda Naka, Salsette DPRC
Ground and Khar Gymkhana. Subsidized vegetables and fruits have helped to beat inflation.
DHAN POTHOHAR GURUDWARA OFFICE
Safety should be paramount for
every citizen and everyone should be
able to step out of their homes feeling
safe. It is this thought that prompted us
to ensure that CCTV installations are
set up in and around the BandraKruz
area. As many as approximately 16
robberies have been averted thanks to
these CCTVs that have aided the police
in nabbing the criminals.
BandraKruz is regarded as one
of the safest locations in Mumbai
and even those who have stayed
here for decades will agree that the
BandraKruz area is a great place to
be. Taking this sense of well-being
one step further was the prime aim
by setting up the cameras at various
points.
On Sunday, 29th June, interactions were held with the office bearers of the Dhan Pothohar Gurudwara prior
to the commencement of work for improving the area. Work will be carried out not only to beautify the area
around the Gurudwara but also to enhance existing facilities.
“ The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others. ”
FOOTBALL FEVER GRIPS BANDRA
While the world was gripped by FIFA fever, Bandra paid tribute to the team sport of football with the
Bandra West Football Association League organized on Sunday, 29th June.
The tournament has now become a sporting tradition in Bandra, this tournament has been supported
and sponsored by us for many years. A true Bandra tradition, the tournament gives an opportunity to young
boys to cultivate and understand the value of team spirit. Sports are an important part of a young person’s
life and this event is the perfect platform for them to exhibit their talent, bond and win great prizes in the
bargain. Bringing the community together and stressing on the importance of sports is the main aim of this
tournament. This tournament has been nurtured, cherished and supported year after year to bring the value
of true sportsmanship to the citizens of Bandra, Khar and Santacruz.

NOTEBOOK DISTRIBUTION INITIATIVE
”
Education is the foundation of life and every child should have the right to access basic education.
It is this thought that we take forward with the Notebook Distribution Drive. Children of various areas
were given notebooks that they can proudly write their futures in. For 20 years, notebooks are being
distributed in different areas across Bandra, Khar and Santacruz. Around 75,000 books are distributed
annually over a period of four days 26th - 30th June.
The smile that the notebook distribution has brought to the faces of these young children was great
validation and this has given a boost to the drive. We strongly believe in the cause of education and we
want to ensure that every child is given an equal opportunity to excel in life.
