We took our students to the pumpkin patch last week. The kids all got a hayride thru the pumpkin patch, and
they got a chance to pick their own pumpkins. Many of them went with the white ghost pumpkin. After they all
got a lesson on all the different kinds of pumpkins that there are and yummy ways to prepare and eat them as
well.

The new school year at Rio Del Valle’s After-School Program kicked off on August 30, 2012
with 80 club members. A lot of our club members are 6th graders; luckily we knew a lot of
them from our summer program. The first day was filled with fun ice breakers that our
students got more excited about being part of the After School Program.

Fun times at Rio Real
FEAR FACTOR CHALLENGE:
For our Halloween event some
of the kids participated in the
Fear Factor Challenge, events
included Halloween Spider
Challenge (students place their
feet in a pool of fake spiders),
Ultimate Fear factor Challenge
(with gloves students moved as
many live Crickets from one bag
to another), Halloween
Memory Challenge (Kinder kids
only), Eat the Bug Challenge
(fake insect in the middle of
Whip Cream eating contest).
Kids won many prizes and our
grand prize was a used donated
bicycle, Anthony Galvan was
the lucky winner.
THE ARTS: Ms. Alberta our Mixteco
Promotora taught our students amazing art flowers out of recycled material. These pieces of art have been
spectacular that we will be entering
their cultural art in the upcoming
Boys & Girls Clubs National Fine Arts
exhibit.

Dancing Feet Program 2013 at all Rio After School
Sites
This coming year we have a great opportunity to participate in the 9th Annual High Desert
Dance Classic which will be held on March 8-10, 2013 at Antelope Valley College 3041 West
Avenue K Lancaster, CA 93536. Elementary school students from 5th grade will be competing in Fox Trot, East Coast Swing, and Salsa. Middle school students from 6th grade will
be participating in those three dances as well as Tango and Rumba. For more information
about the event please contact the After School Coordinator at your site!

Science Night October 12, 2012– Rio Vista Students were
building roller coasters using foam tubing, tape, a ruler, and a
marble.

Rio Vista Middle School
After ending the best summer program ever, Rio Vista students started back on August 30
and were welcomed to the After School program by staff, Ms. Wendy, Ms. Adonna, Mr.
Paul, Mr. Sean, Mr. Kevin, Ms. Cristy, Mr. Ruff, Mr. Nikko and Mr. Andrew.
Students signed up for music, flag football and enrichments. The enrichments offered to
students are MERITO, Smart Girls, Passport to Manhood, Triple Play, Lego Robotics, Photography, dancing, cooking, Flag Football Team (coached by Mr. Paul), and music (guitar,
choir, piano, drums). Students were given their PowerHour teacher to work on homework.
And if students do not have enough time to finish their homework during PowerHour they
can join Homework Club where they get extra time and help to finish it.

Remembering the dead at Nyeland’s Satellite!

partnering organizations and community leaders have been working
on a community garden project
since September! The students
have enjoyed being part of such
great project!
Students from College Bound program at Nyeland have enjoyed learning more about High School and
College requirements to gradue.

The first week of November was great our site filled with remembering our loved ones who have
passed by building them an altar for dia de los muertos. Halloween in October was also really fun
with a trip to sky high and trick or treating. We also managed to run our great programs like Street
Smarts, Smart Girls, College Bound, Keystone, Be Great Graduate, and volleyball.

Sports at Nyeland has been a great venue for students to use their energy and to learn
teambuilding skills. They had a great flagfootball season this fall competing against other
sites. Now, students are playing volleyball season!

Student of the month for October assembely on
Thursday November 1, 2012. Each staff picks a student that during the month do all there homework
and turn it in on time, follow the rules and follow
directions.

A few highlights Rio Rosales
Lights On After School
Our after-school time is always filled
with fun activities but today they were
extra special because our parents
participated! Mr. Ricky’s fifth grade
class made personalized collages.
At Rio Rosales After School Program the
1st, 2nd, and 4th graders learned about
Thanksgiving and how people celebrate
this delicious holiday. They each made
their own turkeys to represent the tradition. The younger kids wrote 5 things
they were grateful for, and the older kids
wrote a creative story "how the turkey
escaped the dinner table".

about the tradition on how
some people celebrate the life
of their loved ones once lived.
Rio Lindo’s After School Site
Flagfootball ended this past weekend.
We had a great year for the 3rd and 4th
making it to the playoff game. We lost
by 2 points, but the kids had a lot of fun
and put a lot of hard work and dedication into the game. The 5th grade team
did good, but we're learning to have fun!

Rio Del Norte
The following events were major highlights at Rio Del Norte:
Lights On Afterschool was a SPOOK-tacular success! In Halloween spirit we scared the
boots off our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders! Parents joined in on the scares. Some of the
other fun included a basketball shots, face painting by our fabulous artists, kids could
try their luck with a lollipop pull, and of course the chance to make beautiful masquerade masks.
In Sports ,our flag football teams did really well in the bowls on Saturday October 27,
2012. The 3rd-4th coed team took second place in the Sun Bowl. Boys’ 3rd-4th team
took FIRST PLACE in the Holiday Bowl. In Alamo Bowl our 5th coed team took FIRST
PLACE too! We couldn’t be more proud of our students.

Rio Del Mar
The month of October is always fun for the students here at Rio Del Mar, with the annual
Lights On event and Halloween activities, what’s not to like about this month? On October
18th the Boys and Girls Club after school program at Rio Del Mar elementary school held the
After School Alliance Lights On event and it was a smash. Over 80 students had the opportunity to join in on all of the fun games and activities, and the best part about it was that all
of the students’ parents came to join in on all of the events that were taking place. Some of
the after school program activities included, pumpkin decorating contest, face painting, mask
decorating, Halloween house decorating, and much more. Over 75 parents attended this
event to show their support for the after school program. Nearing the end of October the
after school program had a fall festival where the students had the opportunity to play
spooky Halloween games and eat lots of pizza. As this month is wrapping up we are gearing
up for the next few months to come, and we expect them to be just as exciting and fun as
this one.
