Auditor’s Report
From the Director by Nick James
The Legislature considered several pieces of gaming legislation
this past Session. They were: one by Senator Hinojosa, which
would have allowed video lottery terminals at the various
tracks, another by Senator Carona calling for full casinos at 5 to
6 venues along with the tracks having full gaming or slot machines at each track’s discretion, and another similar to this one
by Rodney Ellis, Senator from Houston. Representative Richard
Raymond introduced legislation virtually the same as Senator
Hinojosa.
The legislation to get the most traction was Senator Carona’s.
He brought the tracks, the breeds, and casino interests together and worked out a compromise bill. He worked diligently on
the legislation, but was unable to convince enough Senators to
vote for it to bring the legislation to the floor. He has since
stated that he intends to bring it back again, whether in a special session or during the next regular session in January, 2015.

Two other pieces of legislation which would allow licensees with facilities not yet
built, open simulcast parlors until permanent facilities were built, but these were
not able to pass. One by Senator Hinojosa did not receive a vote in the Senate
Finance Committee. The other, by Senator Kel Seliger from Amarillo, passed the
Senate and was scheduled to be voted on in the House. However, because of a
controversial bill requiring blood tests to receive state aid, which was debated for
three-plus hours, killed the opportunity to be voted upon, along with approximately 60 other pieces of legislation in the final day they could be brought forward for a vote.
The licensees with facilities that are not yet built, are meeting with Racing Commission staff to come up with a plan going forward. As soon as their decision is
made, we will inform the membership.
The finals of the $50,000 Diane Whitely Memorial Stakes race was held on Father’s Day, June 16th. A large crowd was on hand at Gulf Greyhound for the finals.
(see pages 4 & 5 for winners) A number of the Board members and their families
were in attendance to see the commencement of the race and the plan is to
make this a yearly event on the same date.
The Texas Racing Commission met on June 11, 2013. An agenda item pertaining
to Greyhound racing is a change in the number of T races the track may run in
one week. Previously, a maximum of eight races could be run. The changes
would allow Gulf, at the judges’ discretion only, to add more to fill out race cards
if the number of active dogs is too low to do so. Also, Gulf Coast Racing, which
owns the Corpus Christi track, asked for and was granted a change in its racing
schedule to run Ts five days in August, 2014 as charity simulcast days.
On Jun 26, 2013, the TGA Board of Director met for its regularly scheduled Board
meeting. Topics discussed were analysis of the Legislative session, the Texas bred
stakes race, a report by the RMSC, and a report by the promotional committee.
Also discussed was the $100,000 one day race meet at the Valley next November.
The plan is to run 10 races at $10,000 per race as Stakes races. Particulars are still
being finalized and as soon as all are done, more information will be presented
to the membership.

Spring Meet pups shine
By Fri, Jun 21, 2013
NGA auction pups from this most
recent Spring Meet in April are already quickly moving up the grading ladder at various tracks around
the country. One of the big stars of
the meet, Review cover dog KB's Try
This On (Team Record*-KB's Autumn
Dove) was undefeated in his first six
official outings at Wheeling--four of
those in graded races (M, D, C and
B). The Grade B win came Friday afternoon (June 21) at Wheeling. KB's
Try This On, bred by Ken Biehle,
notched the fastest time at the
Spring Meet (29.61) and was purchased in the auction ring by Tom
Ferris for $30,000. The pup that
finished second to KB's Try This On
in the opening round at the Meet,
Flyin Supergiant (NMS Sweet ThingFlying Ablaze), continues his march up
the grading ladder at Southland. He was
4-for-4 in his first official races, two of
those in graded events (M and D). Flyin
Supergiant was sold by breeder Vince
Berland to Lester Raines in the ring for
$35,000--highest price paid at the Spring
Auction.
Another Biehle pup, KB's Santa Rina, like
Try This On, has gone from Maiden to
Grade A undefeated in five starts at
Dubuque for purchaser Michael Pence
(winning M, E, D, C, and B). Pence paid
just $6,000 for the Flying Coal City-BI's
Hunter pup in the auction.
CTW BRONZE DRAKE
Wheeling's 2012 All-American and top dog CTW
Bronze Drake is expected to return to the track in
mid- to late April.
According to Clear The Way Kennel operator and
Drake's owner David Peck, the sprint star traveled to Ken Biehle's farm in Texas soon after he
was named to the All-American team in late
February.

Excellence rewarded
Drake had a combined 52 starts this year and last, so we thought it was a good time to give him a
break. He also will have semen drawn (for future breedings),” Peck said. "We look forward to getting
him back to Wheeling sometime in April."
A December 2009 greyhound out of Lonesome Cry/
CTW Outa Sight, Drake had a banner year in 2012. He
was the track win champ with 28 victories, 24 of
those against Grade AA company, and had three five
-race win streaks. Eighteen of his victories were by 4
lengths or more. Peck is thrilled by Drake's selection
to the All-American team.

special honor and I'm grateful the voters recognized the

Bever. It's a privilege to have the opportunity to train a dog of Drake's caliber. They are few and far between," Bever said. "It's one thing to win Grade AA races at Wheeling, but to do it by the lengths he did

Clarity on Florida hauls
Thu, Jun 13, 2013
Recent changes in the animal welfare laws and regulations resulted in some confusion on
the paperwork greyhound haulers need to provide at inspection stations in the state of
Florida.
Authorities from the Dept. of Agriculture & Consumer Service, which oversees the stations, recently told greyhound industry representatives that the only required documentation is proof of vaccinations for all greyhounds being transported. That’s the same paperwork previously required. Questions had arisen, as a result of statements allegedly
made recently by station personnel to transporters as to whether health certificates and
the NGA registration certificates were also required. The Agriculture & Consumer Service
authorities said that they are not, and that personnel will immediately be advised of the
requirements.
Fall Meet support sought
There currently is a fundraising effort to honor the dogwomen as well as fiscally
support the NGA semiannual meets by putting together a new stakes race at
the Fall Meet. The goal is
$1500 – enough funds for a
Main Stakes sponsorship
and a $500 purse for the
fastest female of the meet.
Additional monies will be
divided between the purse
and a donation to a Breast
Cancer Awareness and Research cause. It is fitting that
the meet is in October,
which is Breast Cancer
Awareness month.
Donations can be sent to via
