DISTRICT AWARDS RECIPIENT
FINE ARTS – Art Award
Kimberly Wu
Harry Ainlay is proud to congratulate the following
students who received District Awards this past October
in the following areas.
Kimberly has astonishing artistic
talent and utilizes a variety of
mediums including charcoal,
acrylics, ink, sculpey, clay and
casting. She created a five by
seven foot mural in Crestwood
School and was Harry Ainlay‟s
official
t-shirt
designer,
graduation and yearbook cover
artist,
and
produced
advertisement posters for a variety of clubs and sporting
events. Kimberly gained provincial exposure for her art
in the Canada Day Poster challenges, Chinese New Year
festival and Alberta Chess Team t-shirt design contest.
Her artwork was also featured as part of the Capital City
Savings calendar. Kimberly is presently attending the
University of Alberta in the Faculty of Science. She has
aspirations of entering the field of medicine.
CAREER AND TECHNOLOGY STUDIES –
Fashion Studies
Gillian Bird
Gillian
demonstrated
exceptional talent in garment
construction. She trained in
several aspects of technical
theatre but her creativity and
sewing skills led her to focus on
costume design and production.
Gillian was head of costumes for
the school drama productions for
two years and also mentored
new students while running the costume department for
the 2009 production of Jane Eyre. This involved a
highly structured plan to keep track of crew, costume
pieces and actors while problem solving the
complexities involved with a major production.
Gillian‟s energetic personality was contagious. She
excelled academically, socially and professionally.
Gillian is currently attending Grant MacEwan in the
Technical Theatre program.

FINE ARTS – Music Award
Kent Shores
Kent was a bass clarinetist in
Harry Ainlay‟s Symphonic
Band, played the guitar for the
A Stage Band and Jazz Combo,
and was a tenor vocalist in the
Jazz Choir. Kent is a member of
the Euphoria Ukrainian Polka
Band and the Little Birds Big
Band.
He is a frequent
performer at the Yardbird
Suite‟s open stage and has explored the world of music
by attending concerts at the Yardbird Suite, the
Edmonton Winspear Centre, several Edmonton Jazz
Festivals and national and international venues in
Germany, Switzerland and Montreal. Kent has found his
niche in music and credits the Harry Ainlay Music
Program for encouraging his exploration of, and
appreciation for, music and its performance. Kent is
currently attending the University of North Texas,
majoring in Jazz Studies.
Congratulations to the Senior Football Team on
another outstanding season. They repeated as city
champions within the Edmonton Public Schools football
league and entered provincials for the 2nd year in a row
with an undefeated record. The team proceeded to win
the Northern Alberta Provincial Championship and
headed to the provincial final for the first time in 23
years. With a 2nd place finish in all of Alberta Tier 1
football, the team looks forward to continue to build on
this success.
Junior Football
The Junior Football Team has much to be proud of
this past season. With a roster filled with many players
who are new to football, they fought hard and competed
well in every game. Although they lost in the semi-final
game to J Percy Page High School, it was a close game
that could have gone either way. With these young
athletes, the future looks bright in football for the Titans.
Senior Boy’s Volleyball
Senior Boy‟s Volleyball Team consists of the following
athletes:
Sean Baergan, Connor Dreger, Nick Eveneshen, Mike
Goertz, Alex Ingstrup, Chris Ingstrup, Adam Iverson,
Lee Iverson, Mike Lee, Austin Lloyd, Patrick Mclntyre,
Ryan Patterson, Josh Peters, Nakul Shadagopal,
Clint Millard (Head Coach), Derek Nicoll (Assistant
Coach) and Ryan Flannigan (Assistant / Manager)
The 2010 Senior Boy‟s Volleyball season was an
amazing ride for many different reasons. Firstly the boys
represented the school with dignity and class at all
events. Secondly they improved immensely and played
very well with odds, and high level players, stacked
against them. They played well at the U of A tournament
and finished 4th and continued that play into the U of C
tourney finishing 3rd. At the annual TVT tournament
they played well and managed a 4th place finish in front
of our home crowd. After the TVT tournament the boys
received a long break, which they deserved, and it was
shortly after this that they started to hit their stride. The
team‟s strong play started with wins over formidable
opponents in league play, where they finished second,
and into the Lyndsay Thurber and Salisbury
Tournaments. At both tournaments they finished 2nd,
and the boys started to believe that they could beat
anyone. Playoffs, for league, started and the boys
continued their winning ways capturing the Edmonton
Public league championship. This win automatically
qualified the team for provincials and they went into the
provincial championships ranked 4th. At Provincials the
competition increased immensely and the boys defeated
Western ( #2) and lost to EP Scarlet (#3) and Grande
Prairie (#1). The Titans started the elimination round
ranked 3rd and defeated Sturgeon in the “round of 16”
game and Bev Facey in the quarter final. The team was
peaking at the right time and went into the semi final to
face Grande Prairie. The boys rose to the occasion
playing their hearts out, but it was not enough to defeat a
strong GP team. The Titans regrouped for the bronze
medal match vs. Western. What followed was an epic
battle, lasting 2 hours and going 5 sets. In the end the
Western team prevailed and won bronze. Looking back
on the season which saw the team win 37 matches and
lose 12, we can see it as a success. The coaching staff is
very proud of the boys and will always remember them
as hard working, intelligent players who bought into
everything that the coaches told them.
Junior Women’s Volleyball
Congratulations to the Harry Ainlay Jr. Women’s
Volleyball Team on a fantastic season. The team had a
very dynamic season and improved leaps and bounds.
As young student athletes, these volleyball players were
strong representatives of Harry Ainlay. The girls
showed true Titan Character throughout the season on
and off the court. The team finished 3rd at the Jr.
Western Canada High School tournament in Calgary,
won the consolation final at the Jr. Chinook High School
tournament in Lethbridge, won the consolation final at
Jr. TVT at Harry Ainlay and finished 4th at the Jr. Spruce
Grove High School Tournament. In the Edmonton
Public regular season league play, the team competed in
the Premier League, finished 3rd overall and advanced to
the playoffs performing at their peak. By the end of the
season the team began to play high tempo and
aggressive volleyball proving that all of their hard
physical, technical, tactical and mental training was
paying off. The Titans put together a very strong
performance in quarterfinal action against Ross
Sheppard (who challenged up from the city league) to
advance to the semi-finals against Spruce Grove (who
finished 2nd in the Premier League). Spruce Grove,
being a similar team to the Titans, proved to be a very
tough team and defeated the Titans. The girls have a lot
to be proud of and have continued to uphold the legacy
of Harry Ainlay Titan Volleyball.
Handball
The Senior and Junior Handball season starts on
February 15, 2011. We are looking forward to a
challenging and successful campaign at the city and
provincial level. Last year our Senior Women‟s Team
finished 2nd at provincials and our Junior Women‟s
Team finished 1st in Tier 2 cities.
2010 Skills Alberta Competition – Edmonton Expo Centre
Mechanical CADD
Our Senior Men‟s Team will be coached by Mike
Nahmiash. “Handball Mike” (as he is known in
handball circles) is one of the most successful and
informed handball coaches in the country. He has
travelled and competed extensively in the handball
world. Jason Leshyshyn will continue to coach with
Ainlay and he will be helping to build a strong
foundation with the junior program.
Mike and Jason will be on the selecting committee for
the youth development program at the provincial level.
They will be scouting and identifying players for the
ATHF Germany 2011 trip during the summer. This trip
will be an invaluable experience allowing players to
train and play in various German club settings.
We look forward to playing competitively and growing
the sport of handball in the province. Our teams will be
in the hunt for success and we expect to introduce the
sport to a new group of grade tens. Harry Ainlay is
currently the only high school with both senior and
junior teams. Mark April 7 – 9, 2011 on your calendars
for the Harry Ainlay Handball Cup and April 29 and 30
for Provincials in Red Deer. Go Titans!

CAREER CENTRE /
STUDENT SERVICES
With final exams just around the corner, we
encourage students to be proactive. Thoughtful
preparation can help reduce anxiety around exam
time.
Tips for Exam Preparation
Before the exam, the student can do several things:
 Be
thoroughly
prepared.
Thorough
understanding of the course material is the first
step in reducing test anxiety.
 Don’t cram. A final review is fine, but trying to
cover two months of material in two hours is not
an effective way to prepare for an exam. Begin
your review process early to help reduce last
minute anxiety. Regular review helps retention.
 Arrive at the exam location early. Relax and
don‟t talk about the test with friends. Frantic
reviews are often more confusing than helpful.
 Take care of your physical well-being.
Schedule exercise breaks, eat a healthy diet and
try to get the sleep that you require.
During the exam, be test wise and have a plan for
taking the exam.
 Some initial tension is normal. Generally, when
you receive the test, stop for a moment, take a
few deep breaths and exhale slowly. Carefully
review test directions and glance over the
entire test.
 In a timed test, make a schedule for answering
questions. Allow more time for questions worth
more points. Pace yourself to answer as many
questions as possible.
 Do not linger on questions that “stump” you.
Move on to questions you can answer. This will
get you ready for more difficult questions. You
can always come back if you have time. Higher
scores will usually result from trying all items.
Diploma Preparation Courses
There are a number of Diploma Exam preparation
courses available in January. Edmonton Public Schools
organizes BrainBoosters through Metro Continuing
Education. For more information or to register, contact:

This holiday season Harry Ainlay High School worked
in partnership with GEOMEER, one of Edmonton‟s
newest charitable organizations. Via GEOMEER‟s
“Helping Hampers Campaign”, six major high schools
from across the city were partnered with their local
elementary and junior highs.
Demographics of
families in dire need were obtained and high schools
were given the mission of helping these local families.
In total, this project involved approximately 40 schools
and 38 families.
From Nov. 22 to Dec 6 Ainlay students worked
diligently to collect items such as food, gifts, toiletries
and cleaning supplies to alleviate families from
worrying about these basic items. Harry Ainlay
specifically assisted 10 families which was the largest
number of all the high schools. We would like to
congratulate Harry Ainlay students for their dedication
and impressive effort in providing for these families.
We are proud to report that on December 14 the
hampers were delivered to their respective schools and
received by the families.
Additionally thank you to all the parents who assisted
in providing items for their children to donate. Your
support is greatly appreciated!
Next year GEOMEER hopes to expand this campaign
and help even more families. Keep up the great work
Titans!
FINE ARTS
Performing Arts:
Cappies
The Cappies program is well underway for the
2010/2011 school year. The Ainlay Critic Team has
already attended two productions and submitted their
reviews to The Edmonton Journal. Our team hosted
other Cappies on Thursday, December 9 for our
production of THE WIZ. The theme for the night was
“Going on a Picnic”! They did a great job hosting and
supporting the work of our performers. Thanks to the
teachers that allowed us to use their classrooms for
hosting students from other schools.
For the recent performance of "A Midsummer Night's
Dream," by M.E. LaZerte High School, the review by
Alyson Wu of Harry Ainlay High School is being
forwarded to the Edmonton Journal to be published.
Congratulations, Alyson!
Improv
Performing Arts Classes
Drama 20 students have enjoyed playwriting
workshops from local playwright and actor Jon
Lachlan Stewart. The Musical Theatre classes are in
full swing learning new songs, choreography and
doing scene work, and the dance classes are just
finishing off their Jazz Dance unit by
choreographing duets to “Lullaby of Broadway”
sung by Tony Bennett. Upcoming events next
semester include the One Act Festival after Spring
Break, and the Dance and Musical Theatre
Showcase at the end of April.
Drama Production
This year‟s production of THE WIZ was a grand
success! Performances ran Dec. 7 – 11 with very
receptive audiences. We participated in the Cappies
program again, and look forward to the spring when
nominations for awards are announced. Congratulations
to the 45 cast members and 37 crew members who put in
countless hours to make the show go on!
The Improv Team has been participating in the
Edmonton Improv League for the first time, this year.
They have performed twice and are making their own
mark in the competition circles. They are preparing for
the yearly city and provincial Improv Tournaments in
February for Canadian Improv Games and
Theatresports. A big thanks to Joleen Ballendine for
coaching the team and Ms. Fowler for being lead
teacher. The team‟s first fundraiser of the year was a
success! Watch for their second Pampered Chef
fundraiser in Semester 2. All funds from the fundraiser
will go towards sending Improv Troupe members to
Ottawa for the Canadian Improv Games in late
April 2011.

Tech Crew
The Technical Theatre Team continues to have a busy
year. While being involved in the drama production,
they have also been contributing their services to other
events in and out of the school. Along with the service
jobs they assist with in the Ainlay Theatre, such as the
music concerts and CALM presentations, students
crewed for the TVT Opening Ceremonies, the ASLIC
ceremonies held at Myer Horowitz Theatre, and assisted
with lighting and stage management for a performance
of the Usha Kalaniketan Dance Company. Though we
rarely see them in the light, these students deserve their
own standing ovation for their dedication and
professionalism.

Music Camp
Camp Nakamun was the scene of the annual fall music
camp from October 12 to 14. 150 students from the
Symphonic Band, Concert Band and Concert Choir
spent 10 hours in rehearsal and individual clinic
sessions, interspersed with a little outdoor exercise in the
beautiful fall weather, making use of the climbing wall,
zip line and human foosball “rink”. The students also
enjoyed an evening concert by Don Berner and his jazz
sextet. Thanks to the Harry Ainlay Music Parents‟
Association (HAMPA) for their huge financial support
of the fall camp and a special thanks to the chaperones
that gave up two days of their regular lives to enable our
students to participate in this very productive activity.
2010 Provincial Honour Band
Sixteen talented musicians from Harry Ainlay Music
formed 21% of this year‟s Provincial Honour Band
under the direction Dr. Rob Taylor from UBC. The
students were selected to perform, with this prestigious
ensemble, through a rigorous audition process in the
spring of the previous year. Each year the Honour Band
is immersed in intense rehearsals for three days with an
internationally acclaimed conductor and then performs a
concert and a clinic session for the delegates at Music
Conference Alberta.
Congratulations to Kathleen
Baker, Marie Konrad, Tiffanie Tse, Crystal Narten,
Anthony Wu, Keith Phoa, James Hwang, Emilie Josh,
Molly Wreakes, Mitchell Semple, Genevieve De Caen,
Austin Lee, David Sawyer, Ali Grant, Francesca Seal
and Michael Gust for being selected for the Honour
Band.
Winter Concerts
Spring Tour
On Wednesday, November 24 the Harry Ainlay jazz
ensembles performed their first concert of the year for a
great audience in the school theatre. The two stage
bands and jazz choir are now preparing 4 hours of music
for your dancing and listening pleasure at our annual Big
Band Bash, which takes place on February 26, 2011.
Looking forward to next semester, the music groups of
Harry Ainlay are excited to be performing as part of the
Heritage Music Festival in April in Anaheim, California.
In addition they will be doing master classes and clinics
with the music faculty at a university close to where they
will be staying. Although this is still a long way off, the
students are very excited about participating in this
international music festival.
Concert Choir, Concert Band and Symphonic Band
performed for a sold out, standing room only audience
on Tuesday, November 30. All three groups performed
exceptionally well and everyone in attendance would
agree that Ainlay‟s outstanding music program remains
among the elite in the province, and in fact, the country.
Congratulations to all the musicians involved in both of
these concerts.
FRENCH IMMERSION
We are pleased to announce a trip, in March 2012, for
the FLA 30, French 30 and French 30IB students of
2011-2012 to France. The trip will include a few days in
Rouen, in Paris, and many more lovely towns. More
details to come soon!
Taxi
In December, our
French Immersion
students gathered in
the Theatre to watch
the French movie:
“Taxi” completely in
French with no
subtitles! Not only
was this a nice way
to spend a Tuesday
afternoon but it was also great for the students to
measure their level of comprehension of French. Most
students said they really enjoyed it.
French 30-9Y challenge
After completing all the projects and the oral exam, the
Grade 12 French Immersion students wrote the
FSL 30-9Y final exam this week. Mme. Wolfe will have
the 90 + final marks ready for the end of January.
Félicitations!
Physique et chimie
Our French Immersion Physique 30 and Chimie 30 had a
busy week.
They
spent a morning at
U of A doing physics
experiments and an
afternoon at Campus
St-Jean (U of A)
doing
chemistry
experiments.
DELF/DALF
Only a few more months and it will be the DELF season.
This year, Grade 12 FLA 30 /30I students who are
writing the DELF B2 or DALF C1 level, and
French 30 /30I students writing the DELF level B1, will
be able to do so at no cost to them since the school will
cover the registration fees. However, in the future,
30 level students of French/French Immersion might
have to pay a registration fee in order to write the exam.
Campus St. Jean
We are glad to announce the implementation of a
partnership between Campus St. Jean and Harry Ainlay
High School. Since Saturday, Oct. 23, Campus St. Jean
has been offering free bi-weekly help sessions for our
French Immersion students in Math and in French
Language Arts. Campus St. Jean has been able to
accommodate 8-10 students per subject per level. The
people giving the sessions are French speaking
university students employed by Campus St. Jean.
Please ask your son/daughter to talk to their FLA or
Math teachers for the next session.
learn a new language, please listen carefully to the
announcement in January. Shortly, we will be looking
for interested Grade 10 students to apply for the 3 month
exchange program. The deadline is March 1, 2011.
French
Great first semester for our French students. Some
French students went to see the play at the Cité
Francophone „‟Une maison face au nord‟‟. Despite a
treacherous return home, our students enjoyed their
experience. This year, is Year 2 of our partnership with
a French high school in Rouen (northwest of Paris).
Students are busy writing to their pen pals. We are
excited to announce a trip, in March 2012, for the
French 30, French 30IB and FLA 30 students of
2011-2012 to France. More details to come.
German
German 10/10 pre-IB students,
after only a few months of
German,
are
presenting
themselves and likes/dislikes to
the class in German. Quite an
accomplishment! Our German
students are also looking indepth at the cultural traditions of
Advent and Christmas (Singing,
crafts etc.) Did you forget to leave your shoes outside
your bedroom door? Poor St-Nicholas!!
A few more months and the students will be off to
Germany, home of the real frankfurters…
Japanese
Tokiwa – Ainlay Exchange 2010-2011
SECOND LANGUAGES
Exchanges with Germany, Japan,
Québec, and Spain
If you are in Grade 10 this year and are interested in
spending a semester in a different country/province to
Eight students from Tokiwa University High School in
Mito City, Ibaraki, Japan completed their three month
study abroad program
at Harry Ainlay on
November 19. They
enjoyed
both
attending classes at
Ainlay and living
with Canadian host
families.
Many
students in our Japanese program had great opportunities
for cultural exchange and language practice. Fourteen
Ainlay students will be visiting Mito for a school visit
and homestay experience during their trip to Japan in
March, 2011. Have a great trip, Titans!
Spanish
For the past two
weeks, our Spanish 20
students have been
trading their textbooks
for glue and balloons.
The piñata confection is
in progress. Dr. Seuss should be worried. The Spanish
30 students are just finishing their Spanish children
stories.
STUDENT COUNCIL
This year's Dodgeball Tournament displayed fierce
competition by many teams in both the Teacher and
Student Dodgeball games. All teams fought bravely
throughout the competition, dodging many balls and
pleasing the crowd with intense play and creative
costumes. Congratulations to “McDonald‟s Monopoly”
who won the tournament with a sweeping victory of 3-0
in the finals. We would like to thank all students and
teachers who participated in this year's Dodgeball
Tournament, making it a huge success! We'd like to also
thank all of the spectators who came to the gym to cheer
and show off that Titan spirit!
After Dodgeball, Student Council led the events of this
year's Holiday Week. From the acclaimed Bingo to
finding candy canes in the new event called "Santa's
Beard", Ainlay students showed off their competitive
nature with lots of fun and excitement! Bingo, Cookie
Decorating and Santa's Beard were all great successes
with the immense participation of Ainlay students. On
December 17, Ainlay Leadership students will have the
opportunity to interact with the elementary students at
McKee for the Annual Winter Festival. They will lead
many activities, ranging from various crafts to games, to
celebrate the Christmas spirit! To kick off second
semester, on February 2, 2011 Student Council is
hosting the hugely popular Bring Your Own Banana
Day, also known as BYOB! We are looking forward to
seeing you there and don‟t forget your banana!!!
