The 2016 Lakeside Historical Society float in the 51st Annual Western Days parade. This year’s float was designed
by LHS Vice President Steve Miller (who pulled the float
with his truck) and longtime LHS member John Swink

the entry was the vintage calliope, donated to the Society
by Dolores Gruner.

MEMBERS ARE WELCOME!
Lakeside artist, David Ybarra, has created another slice
of Lakeside history with his latest mural, a cattle drive during
the Mexican era in California. It took more than a month to
complete because Ybarra had to work in blistering bright sun
on some days and had to wait for the rain to let up on other
days. He even worked at night with lights shining on this
project.
Ybarra said he came up with the artwork concept when
Pinnacle Peak Steakhouse opened at 9927 Maine Avenue
in 2014. He presented the idea to the owner and she
thought it would be a good fit. He pitched his idea to the
Maine Avenue Revitalization Association (MARA) and they
set about raising money. It took a couple of years for the
funds to be raised, but they finally they gave Ybarra the
green light. Unfortunately the restaurant had closed down by
then. The owner of the building, Steve Clapp, liked the mural
idea and wanted the project to continue, even though a different type of restaurant might eventually open there. Clapp
is very happy with the mural.
MARA asked the artist to create the mural with Lakeside
landmarks and that’s what he did – with El Cap Mountain
looming in the background, trees marking the San Diego
River meandering through the area, Lindo Lake in the distance, Mexican cowboys driving a herd of cattle, and the
Estudillo adobe house in ruins. Ybarra said he got a real
Bovine education on the anatomy of cows, since he included
hundreds of them in his painting.
Ybarra considers himself a sign painter and got his first
job on Maine Avenue back in 1975. Looking up and down
the street, his signs and murals are on at least 12 buildings,
a fact to be proud of. He said his idea has always been to
create old fashioned signs in Lakeside’s Historic District.
For his next project, Ybarra is envisioning a stagecoach
and a train coming through Lakeside, highlighting old fashioned and outdated transportation, perhaps on the Agriculture Pest Control building across the parking lot from his
latest project.

3RD GRADE LIVING HISTORY DAYS JUNE 7, 8, & 9, 2016
By Chris Herzog
Hey Old Timers!
Once again, the Lakeside Historical Society will sponsor this local history program for the 3rd grade students of
the Lakeside Union School District. The Museum committee and volunteers help the students participate with
hands-on activities of chores, pastimes and traditions
reminiscent of the 1900’s, and a little bit of Lakeside history geared for this age group
A few more volunteers are needed to help with the activities of “cow milking,” button sewing, and braiding. Volunteer for one, two, or all three days and any amount of
time you can give us. Dressing in period costume really
adds to the fun. The dates are:
Tuesday, June 7
 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. — Lemon Crest School
 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon — Lakeside Farms School
Wednesday, June 8
 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. — Lindo Park School
Thursday, June 9
 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon — Lakeview School
Activities include: button-on-a-string game; “cow milking”; braiding; button sewing; olde time school room; wash
tub laundry; needle craft/handwork; antique gas engines.
Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. is open to the public to see
the antique engines and talk to the guys who run them.
We also need buttons for the button sewing activity:
size of a nickel, four holes, any color or material. If you
can donate buttons call me or please drop them off at the
History Center with my name attached.
Sure hope you will join us—this will be our 11th season.
Refreshments are provided for the volunteers. Please call
Chris Herzog at (619) 561-0372 to be part of the show.
On Wednesday, June 8, at 10:45 a.m., come see the
Early Days Gas Engine & Tractor Association, Branch #22,
give us a live demonstration!
The EDGE&TA was formed in 1957 and is a national
organization whose purpose is to stimulate interest in collecting, restoring, preserving, and exhibiting gasoline and oil
engines, gas/diesel and steam tractors, power driven farm
machinery and any other equipment of historical value.
These gentlemen come every year to take part in our Living
History Days. The event will take place in our courtyard. All
interested adults are welcome.
The 2016 Living History Days will be held from June 7
through 9 at the Lakeside Historical Society, 9906 Maine
Avenue. This annual event is sponsored by the Historical
Society and tailored for the 3rd graders of the Lakeside
School District as part of their local history program.
