The statue of the Tamagawa brothers is built in
the park in the Hamura Dam. When a new
channel was needed to be built with Edo’s development, Tamagawa Waterway was planned
by Shouemon and Seiemon.
The brothers completed the waterway to Yotsuyaokido in Shinjuku only in 8 months in 1653.
The shogunate government promoted the
brothers to Bushi position and titled them the
“Josuiyaku (waterway position)” to administrate
the waterway.

The water, which had been provided to people
in the Edo Era to support their living, is still used
as a part of drinking water for citizens of Tokyo
now.

∼free bird∼
There are so many wild birds living in Tamagawa River area.
In fall, when the time for migration comes,
birds will come to the riverbed on the way
to migrate to the south after breeding in the
north. This is the season when rare birds
such as snipes can be observed.
Swallows in spring and cuckoo and Arundinaceus in summer can be observed.
Binoculars and illustrated books are ab-
solute necessities. For binoculars,
a small sized pair is useful so that
they can be carried in the bag in
case of an unexpected observation (when you find a bird unexpectedly). For illustrated books, it
is recommended to prepare both
“for carrying” and “for admiration”.
When you find a flying bird, follow
it with naked eyes at first until it
stops on a branch. Then, take
out your binoculars and observe it
thoroughly.
