Saint Stephen’s 2016-17 Athletics Guide
A BRIEF HISTORY
Athletics has been an integral part of Saint Stephen’s since the
school’s opening in 1970. SSES began as a K-8 school, adding one
grade level each year and various sports programs in conjunction
with enrollment growth. Tom Stoll served as the first athletic
director and led the program into the late 1980s. Sports offerings
and facilities were limited at the start. In the early days, the
Falcons fielded teams in football, volleyball, soccer, basketball
and cheerleading. Indoor sports were played off-site until the
construction of the Selby Gymnasium in 1974. Due to the difficulty
of maintaining a large enough roster, football was dropped in
1976 in favor of baseball. The addition of softball and tennis teams
followed soon thereafter.
Although the Selby Gym was state-of-the-art at the time with its
innovative rubber flooring, it had no air conditioning. Air flow
was maintained by two giant fans on the east wall that created
a substantial breeze upon entering the facility. There were no
floor-level bleachers, and spectators watched from bleachers
erected on the gym’s balcony.
Through the 1980s, sports offerings included soccer and
volleyball in the fall, basketball and cheerleading in the winter,
and baseball, softball and tennis in the spring. As school
enrollment grew, several junior varsity teams were added.
Retractable bleachers were also added to the gym in the mid-80s
so that fans could get closer to the action on the floor.
Dave Samler became the school’s second athletic director in
1989 and guided the program into the 21st century. Carlos
Boothby, a 1983 SSES graduate, followed Samler in 2011. As
the student population continued to boom throughout the
1990s and into the 2000s, there was a demand for more sports
offerings, leading to the launch of boys and girls golf, boys and
girls swimming, girls soccer, wrestling, cross country, track teams
and the return of football in 2006.
Facilities were also upgraded. A beautiful new wood gym floor
was installed in 1996. The athletic fields became Turner Fields in
a 1997 renovation that included a pristine Bermuda grass surface
field, a new softball field, dugouts for baseball and batting cages.
The culmination of building upgrades came in 2013, when the
school unveiled the new Moore Athletic Complex at Turner
Fields, including a field turf football/soccer stadium and the
Falcon Field House training center and locker rooms. In 2016, the
Falcon rowing program was launched and a new boathouse was
constructed on the rear of the gymnasium.
Saint Stephen’s teams have earned 13 state championships
in the school’s relatively brief history and the Falcon athletic
program is more vital than ever under the leadership of Athletic
Director Lenny Paoletti. In 2016-17, SSES will field 53 teams that
compete in 14 different sports.
INTRODUCING
THE RE-IMAGINED
FREDDY FALCON!
He’s been Saint Stephen’s beloved
mascot for more than 30 years, but even
Freddy Falcon needs a makeover every
now and then. Thanks to a challenge
from the Falcon Athletic Boosters, who
chipped in half of the funding, the SSES
community rose to the occasion and
supported an online campaign in late
spring 2016 to re-invent Freddy Falcon.
Saint Stephen’s then worked with BAM!
Mascots in Ontario, Canada to design a
custom concept for the new costume.
Initial sketches were created, modified
and approved in May. Over the next
few months, Freddy came to life at
BAM! Studios. He arrived on campus in
mid July and was a highlight as he was
introduced to a raucous crowd of fellow
Falcons at the school’s opening chapel
at the Hoagland Arena on Aug. 19.
Don’t miss your chance to meet Freddy
as he soars in to represent his Falcons
at a variety of athletic and community
events throughout the year.
MESSAGE from ATHLETIC DIRECTOR LENNY PAOLETTI
Welcome Falcon Families!
There are more reasons than ever to be excited about the
2016-17 season!
This year, Saint Stephen’s will host district tournaments
in boys and girls cross country, boys basketball, boys and
girls soccer, girls golf regionals, and potentially the district
tournaments for boys and girls golf when those sites are
announced later this fall.
In the spring, we’ll host the Manatee County Track
and Field Championships, Manatee County JV Track
Championships, Manatee Middle School and Manatee
Elementary Track Championships. So not only will Saint
Stephen’s be the site for dozens of exciting Falcons
regular-season games, but we’ll roll out the red carpet to
welcome schools from throughout the area for top-level,
post-season competition!
Another reason to be very excited for the 2016-17 season
is that the majority of the student-athletes participating
on our varsity teams will be juniors and seniors! These
Falcons have been training within our programs, have
committed themselves to our department-wide strength
and conditioning, and are now bigger, faster and stronger.
For example, this will be the first time since the inception
of the program that girls lacrosse will have a senior
on the team . . . and the Falcons won their first district
tournament last year!
Also new in 2016-17, football, volleyball, and boys and girls basketball will participate in more localized geographic
districts that include schools such as Out-of-Door Academy, Bradenton Christian, Sarasota Christian, and Imagine of North
Port. This will give us the chance to build on already blossoming rivalries with those schools and bring many more games
within easy travel distance for our fans.
And we’re making it easier for you to follow all of the Green & Gold sports happenings by enhancing our already great
athletics pages at www.saintstephens.org. New individual team pages were launched this fall. We’ll continue to update
them with great information about all of our sports throughout the year.
I’m also very excited to welcome a number of new head coaches to the Saint Stephen’s athletic family. Dave Ruemenapp
(boys basketball), Jeff Logsdon (swimming), Mike Verrill (girls basketball), and Andrew Sopher (girls soccer) are all great
leaders who are perfectly qualified to help our student-athletes reach their potential and represent the school in the firstclass manner that we demand.
With the progress we’ve made through the hard work of so many, the athletic programs at Saint Stephen’s are no longer
a well-kept secret. The curiosity of years past is slowly being replaced with a bullseye. It’s no longer a surprise to anyone
when the Falcons have success on the playing fields and courts. We are becoming the “big game” on everyone’s schedule.
Time and time again, we have proven ourselves to be state-level competitors; now is the time to show everyone who we
truly are – We are Falcons!
Go Falcons!
FOOTBALL preview:
What can they do for an encore?
After a long hiatus, Falcons football was relaunched in 2006, and the steady climb up the ladder of success began with
the hiring of Head Coach Tod Creneti in 2011. After a winless first campaign at SSES, Creneti’s program has soared.
The Falcons have posted consecutive winning seasons since 2013 and are a combined 23-10 during that stretch. The 2015
squad (9-2) set a school record for wins and collected the program’s first two post-season victories, winning convincingly
at Lecanto Seven Rivers Christian (56-37) and Boca Raton Christian (35-0), before falling to Lakeland Santa Fe Catholic in
the Sunshine State Athletic Conference Florida Bowl Championship in Orlando.
The Falcons offense averaged more than 350 yards and nearly 40 points per game, while the defense held seven
opponents to 10 points or less and recorded a pair of shutouts.
The SSES ground game put together a record-breaking season. The Falcons established new team bests for total rushing
yards (2,720), yards per game (247.3), yards per carry (8.6) and rushing touchdowns (38). Individually, quarterback Fred
Billy accounted for 33 touchdowns (18 rushing and 15 passing) and nearly 2,000 total yards. His QB rating of 85.6 was
the best in school history. Running backs Demetrius Davis, Ace Murrell and Alex Virgilio combined to produce more than
1,400 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns. All return for a 2016 team that loses just two seniors and is poised to continue its
run of success.
The defense will be led by returning All-Conference safety Lethario Jones, but he’ll have plenty of experienced help. Back
for another year are key upperclassmen Peyton Vining (LB/WR), Jett Gillum (LB/S), Parker Landsberg (DE/OG), Ace Murrell
(LB/RB) and Virgilio (LB/RB), as well as sophomore defensive end Tyler Burnham.
In addition to Billy, Davis, Virgilio and Ace Murrell, the offense returns two-way players Vining, Landsberg and Jordon
Murrell (WR/DB), along with senior tackle Josh Stevens. Virgilio once again handles the placekicking and punting duties,
and he got his senior season off to a flying start this summer by being named a Ray Guy Prokicker.com Top Prospect at
the Ray Guy Kicking Camp.
The emergence of Saint Stephen’s football has created a new sense of excitement on campus. Friday game nights have
become prime-time events, thanks to the high-powered Falcons and the opening of the state-of-the-art Moore Athletic
Complex in 2013.
With five home games and two road contests within easy driving distance of campus in 2016, fans will have plenty of
opportunities to root on the Falcons in person. The schedule is highlighted by games at local rivals Bradenton Christian
and Out-of-Door Academy, which will play their inaugural seasons in the SSAC Coral Bay Division. There is also a visit from
Santa Fe Catholic in the third week of the regular season for a rematch of last year’s championship game.
Despite its brief football history, tradition is building and Saint Stephen’s has had great success finding opportunities for
its student-athletes at the collegiate level. In each of the past four seasons, at least one Falcon has moved on to a NCAA
Division I FBS or FCS program: Linebacker/tight end Tim Nutter (Furman 2013), linebacker Bradley Beazant (Rice 2014),
offensive lineman Wyatt Knopfke (Boston College 2015), and long snapper Jacob Westberry (Fresno State 2016).

FALL SEASON
CROSS COUNTRY: After qualifying for back-to-back state meets in 2014 and 2015, the boys’ team is poised to make some
serious noise this season. The Falcons will be in search of their first-ever district and regional championships, and the pieces
are in place to make a serious run. The boys were second at district, fifth at regional, and 20th on the course at Apalachee
State Park in Tallahassee at the state meet in 2015. Several of the top runners, including junior Hayes Chatham, and seniors
Dawson Hamilton, Andrew Csubak and Alex Howe, return with another year of valuable experience behind them. The
girls have fallen short of qualifying for state competition the past two years, but have advanced out of the district meet to
regionals. They were third at the 2015 district run at G.T. Bray Park and will be led this season by senior Dasha Fomina and
seventh grader Maddie Popp.
BOYS GOLF: Recent Saint Stephen’s teams have kept a tradition of
excellence alive. The Falcons will be chasing their third straight regional
championship and state tournament appearance in 2016. The 2015 team
finished seventh in the state, led by senior Justin Wynen, who was one shot
off the lead after the first day before ultimately finishing eighth. Although
Wynen has graduated, the 2017 Falcons have four golfers back who
participated at the state tournament and will look for leadership from key
returnees sophomore David Hu and senior Adam Vilimovsky. The Donald
Ross Invitational at Sara Bay Country Club is a highlight of the regularseason schedule, and the Falcons will be seeking a title after finishing
second a year ago.
GIRLS GOLF: The girls’ golf program has emerged as an annual contender
for the state championship. Although the Falcons are still seeking their
elusive first FHSAA team title, they have dominated district and regional
play since 2012, winning crowns in each of the past four seasons and
posting top-11 finishes at the state tournament. The 2016-17 Falcons
will lean on senior Vanessa Yan, who will once again be one of the
area’s top individual players. Yan was the district medalist and tied atop
the leaderboard at regionals last season. She will be working to take
another step forward after finishing 14th and 17th at the past two state
tournaments. Other top returning players include sophomores Kendall
Miller and Catherine Huang, and eighth grader Maria Huang.
SWIMMING/DIVING: The Falcons train at the G.T. Bray Aquatic Center,
three miles from the Saint Stephen’s campus, and welcome new Head Coach
Jeff Logsdon, former leader of the Lakewood Ranch YMCA competitive
program and assistant coach at Manatee High School. Sophomore Alex
Webster is the top returning performer and the next in a line of outstanding
swimmers at Saint Stephen’s. As a freshman in 2015, Webster established
new school bests in the 200- and 500-meter freestyles. He advanced all the
way to the state meet and placed fifth in the 500 and eighth in the 200.
VOLLEYBALL: The Falcons are looking for a rebound season in 2016
and will be led by record-breaking junior outside hitter Sophie Bilik, who
should continue to pace the Falcons statistically and be a candidate for
all-area honors. She already ranks third on the school list for career kills.
On the opposite side is sophomore outside hitter Ashleigh Rodhouse, a
versatile player with the capability of swinging in all four hitting positions.
Defensively, the leaders will be libero Juliana Rodriguez and defensive
specialist Kristyn Weaver. Junior setter LeNae Jones will drive the offense
and middle hitter Astrid Culp also returns. A key newcomer to the varsity is
freshmen middle hitter Sarah Stevens, who stands six-feet tall and is ready
to make an impact.

WINTER SEASON
BOYS BASKETBALL: SSES enters a new era under first-year head coach David Ruemenapp, who will attempt to
jumpstart the Falcons and turn them into district contenders. Ruemenapp’s coaching resume includes impressive
turnarounds of programs in Texas, North Carolina and Florida. He takes over a Saint Stephen’s program that has not had
a winning season since 2009-10, but made positive strides in the past two years. The Falcons were 8-17 last season, with
three losses by eight points or less despite 1,000-point career scorer Jake Westberry missing more than half of the season
with an injury. SSES also built some momentum by winning its final three regular-season games. The top returning player
is senior guard Jordon Murrell, who averaged eight points and three rebounds a year ago.
GIRLS BASKETBALL: After winning just five games in five seasons between 2009 and 2014, the Falcons have made
significant competitive steps forward during the past two campaigns. Saint Stephen’s has collected 12 wins and a number
of narrow losses that speak to the progress being made on the court. Mike Verrill, who also coaches SSES softball, takes
over the program and has two solid contributors to build his 2016-17 team around. Juniors Claudia Sbaschnik and LeNae
Jones are in their third season playing together and should provide scoring, rebounding, and leadership. The Falcons
will compete in a new district with a much more local flavor. Instead of a schedule stacked primarily with Pinellas County
foes, SSES faces Bradenton Christian, Sarasota Christian, Out-of-Door Academy, and Imagine School at North Port as new
district rivals.
BOYS SOCCER: Few high school programs have been as consistently successful as the Falcons under Head Coach Marc
Jones. The dean of area soccer coaches came to SSES in 1994 and has directed a string of teams that reload and compete
annually at the highest level. The Falcons have captured 17 district, nine regional, and one state championship in Jones’
23 seasons. A model of consistency, the Falcons have posted a 67-11-14 record since 2010-11. Their last district loss
came during the 2009-10 season, a string of 35 games in which SSES is 33-0-2. SSES has reached the state tournament
four times since winning its lone title in 2001, and advanced to the Final Four in 2011, 2014 and 2015. SSES has an active
streak of district championships dating back to 2011. A two-year run of regional crowns was snapped in 2016 with a
loss to Naples Community School in the regional semifinals. The 2016-17 Falcons expect to once again compete for
championships. The team will be led by high-scoring seniors Jonathan Boyd and Alex Virgilio. The pair combined for 30
goals and 30 assists last season.
GIRLS SOCCER: After serving as the middle school and junior varsity head coach, and varsity assistant in 2015-16,
Andrew Sopher takes over the varsity Falcons and inherits a program filled with emerging young talent. Although they
fell short of a district championship in an upset on a penalty kick in the closing minutes of last year’s semifinal, SSES
posted another strong season and one upon which to build. The Falcons appear poised to return to their regular winning
ways behind skilled players such as juniors Katie Pierce and Lily Meaker, sophomore Kendall Miller, and eighth grader
Julianne Dunbar. A standard of success has already been established. The program has had just one losing season and
captured nine district titles since 2000, including a string of five consecutive from 2008-12.
WRESTLING: The Falcons made school history in 2016 by hosting their first on-campus meet in January. The inaugural
Falcon Invitational featured grapplers from SSES, Bayshore, Manatee, Bradenton Christian, and Sarasota Military Academy.
It was one of the highlights of a truly memorable season for the young program. SSES eventually placed three wrestlers
in the FHSAA 1A-Region 3 championships in Fort Myers. Max Manning (132 lbs.), Jake Manning (106 lbs.) and Parker
Lansberg (160 lbs.) each won their weight class at the Class 1A-District 11 tournament to qualify. Jake Manning and
Lansberg capped off their seasons by winning first-round regional matches. All three return in 2016-17. The Falcons also
welcome impressive newcomer Alan Morano, Jr. The freshman transfer from Bradenton Christian made his own history
last season. As an eighth grader, Morano advanced to the state meet by winning district and regional titles at 113 pounds
– the first post-season wrestling championships ever for the school.
SPRING SEASON
BASEBALL: After a successful 2016 campaign in which SSES went 15-10, including a six-game win streak to close the
regular season, the success of the 2017 Falcons hinges on the development of its young pitching staff. Senior RHP Caleb
Eyre is big game tested, winning key starts down the stretch last year, and will be counted on to be a veteran leader on
the mound. Sophomores Max Runde and Jacob Eyre will also see significant innings and their success will determine
what kind of year the Falcons will have. Shane Dempsey, a senior transfer from IMG Academy, should also be a major
contributor. After tremendous freshmen seasons, Mike Madigan and Ben Tobio are once again expected to be the
offensive and defensive leaders of the team. Both are dynamic players who should develop into solid college prospects.
The team saw significant gains in 2016 while starting one of the youngest lineups in the area and will look to continue on
the success of its talented yet very successful underclassman.
SOFTBALL: SSES had its two-year run as district champions snapped in 2016, but the young Falcons appear poised for
big things over the next few seasons. The roster is filled with underclassmen who continue to gain confidence as they
play together. All eight Falcons who appeared in 17 games or more last season were sophomores or younger. Five of
those players hit better than .300, and freshman pitcher Amy Woodworth was a workhorse, throwing 89.2 innings with
a respectable 4.68 earned run average. As a team, the Falcons hit .283. Juniors Claudia Sbaschnik and LeNae Jones will
again provide the leadership. Sbaschnik, the team captain, batted .319 with a team-high seven extra base hits and 14 RBI.
Jones paced the Falcons with a .364 batting average and 18 stolen bases. The current roster, given time, should help SSES
build on a softball tradition that, since 2001, includes seven district titles and an appearance in a regional championship
game in 2015.
BOYS LACROSSE: With head coach Jamie Carver stepping aside following the 2016 season, the Falcons will have new
leadership in just their fifth year as an FHSAA-sanctioned program. SSES will also need new leaders to emerge on the field
with the graduations of team captain Anthony Matteo and leading score Ali Sammour. Senior goalie Matt Goeders returns.
GIRLS LACROSSE: No sports program at Saint Stephen’s has gone from birth to district champion faster than girls
lacrosse. After starting as a club team in 2009, the program reached varsity status in 2013, and it didn’t take long for the
Falcons to taste success. Teams comprised entirely of underclassmen and middle school students appeared in district title
games in 2014 and 2015, before raising the championship trophy for the first time in 2016. The Falcons defeated defending
champion Cardinal Mooney for the District 17 crown and followed that up with the school’s first playoff win, a rout of Estero
High in the opening round of the state championship. Their post-season run ended at perennial power Naples Barron
Collier a few days later, but the Falcons believe they have set the stage for bigger and better things. The 2017 team will
be led by a group of proven and experienced performers, including two-time all-district selections Baylee Barker, Emily
Hiebner, Katie Pierce, and Kendall Miller.
TRACK AND FIELD: Over the past two seasons, SSES has set a new standard for competitiveness, qualifying 18 studentathletes for the FHSAA state championship meet. In 2015, then-sophomore sprinter Jordon Murrell and senior distance
runner Andrew Zandemenego were the first two SSES boys to qualify for the state meet in an individual event in more
than a decade. Murrell (200 meters) and junior Andrew Csubak (800 meters) kept that run alive in 2016, finishing seventh
and sixth, respectively. After fantastic performances at the regional meet in Clearwater, 10 Falcons – the most ever –
advanced to the 2016 state championships. All placed in the top eight of their event to medal. Eight of those qualifiers
return, including the boys 800-meter relay team of Csubak, Henry Howell, Hayes Chatham, and Dawson Hamilton. Letherio
Jones, Fred Billy, Murrell from the 4x100 relay; Jones, Demetrius Davis, Murrell, and Csubak in the 4x400 relay; and Csubak,
Chatham, Howell, and Luke Valadie in the 4x800 relay.

BOYS TENNIS: Last season, first-year head coach Scott Shields inherited a program that had won the 2015 state
championship, but returned just two experienced players. That combination presented a significant rebuilding job with
seven newcomers, but the Falcons responded with a promising 5-3 campaign. Two of those losses came against local
public school powers Riverview and Sarasota. The young Falcons went 4-1 in district play and added a convincing victory
against cross-town rival Lakewood Ranch. Newcomers Noah Van Dyke and Dmitry Spiridonov each notched six singles
victories to pace the Falcons and return to bolster the 2017 team. Also returning are Alex Siegal, Dominik Von Burchard,
and Rishab Ramamurthy. Cardinal Mooney transfer Chenhi Li also figures to be a key contributor.
GIRLS TENNIS: In a rebuilding year similar to their male counterparts, the Lady Falcons put together a solid campaign
in 2016 that included an unbeaten district record and runner-up finish at the district tournament to qualify for regionals.
Senior Mpho Cho and eighth grader Allie Serterides won district singles titles at Nos. 3 and 4, and both return, along with
sophomore Sabina Budova, eighth grader Lalasa Vacek, and seniors MaryAnn Placheril and Emma Jones. The outlook for
the 2017 season is promising with the team only losing Annie Brey. The Falcons are in a great position to compete for
district and regional appearances and beyond.
ROWING: In mid-February 2016, nearly 20 students reported to the new boat house on campus as prospective members
of the inaugural Falcon Scullers rowing team. The rowers spent the spring training with Sarasota Scullers coach Andreas
Leichtfuss to learn fundamentals in preparation for future competition. This season figures to be another developmental
year on the water as the program builds.

SAINT STEPHEN’S ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME
The Saint Stephen’s Athletic Hall of Fame was reinstated in 2016 after a six-year hiatus, with the induction ceremony
held during the school’s Game Changers athletics fund raiser on Jan. 30. The annual event was chock full of enthusiastic
current and past parents, alumni, friends, faculty and administrators, and proved to be the perfect setting to honor two
former Falcons who have brought distinction to the school.
Alumnus David Wheaton ’87 couldn’t attend the induction, but Alumni
Director Laurie McFeeley shared his heartfelt note of thanks at being
honored for his illustrious tennis career: “What I experienced and learned
at Saint Stephen’s continues to impact me today both personally and
professionally as a radio host, writer and speaker. I have come to realize
that anything I am or have done is because of God’s grace – His unmerited
favor – along with the sacrificial investment that family, friends, and key
influencers like Saint Stephen’s have made on me.”
Wheaton won the U.S. Open junior title in 1987 and was ranked the
country’s No. 1 junior player. In 1988, he enrolled at Stanford and helped
lead the team to the NCAA title. Wheaton turned pro later that year
and eventually won his first top-level singles title and finished as men’s
doubles runner-up at the U.S. Open in 1990. In 1991, he won the Grand
Slam Cup in Munich, beating Michael Chang in straight sets; reached
the semi-finals in men’s singles at Wimbledon, beating Andre Agassi in
the quarter-finals before losing to Boris Becker; and was a men’s doubles
runner-up at the Australian Open with partner and former Stanford
teammate Patrick McEnroe. In July ’91, Wheaton reached his career-high
singles ranking: World No. 12. After retiring from the professional tour in
2001 due to recurring injuries, Wheaton continued playing in professional
tournaments on the senior tour, winning the Wimbledon men’s 35 doubles
championship title in ’04 and achieving runner-up status in ’05. He served
on the Board of Directors of the United States Tennis Association through
2006.
The second 2016 Hall-of-Fame inductee, professional golfer Carolin
Pinegger ’09, was on campus for the ceremony. After graduating from
Saint Stephen’s, Pinegger played at the University of Central Florida. She
turned professional immediately upon college graduation and joined
the Symetra Tour (“the road to the LPGA”). She is currently taking a year off from Symetra play to get her MBA at Rollins
College.
Prior to entering UCF, Pinegger was a five-year member of the Austrian National Team and finished third in the 2008
Austrian National Championship. She excelled on the Future Collegians World Tour (FCWT), winning the championship in
2008 and was named FCWT All-American. Her college highlights included being named All-Conference USA in 2010 and
leading the Knights to their first tournament championship since 2002. In 2012, she was again named All-Conference USA
and was the top finisher for UCF in NCAA East Regional competition. Pinegger was elected team captain in 2013. While
much of her undergraduate years were spent in the classroom and on the links, Pinegger still found time to give back
to the community through volunteer work in a variety of community service projects including Habitat for Humanity,
Autism Walks, and Junior Achievement.
In 2014, she was a cast member on Big Break Myrtle Beach, the 22nd season of the Golf Channel’s popular television
series. She is also co-creator of a social network called GLBrain.com, an internet platform providing users with the ability
to start their own blogs about vital issues such as politics, finance, and the environment.
Please help us recognize and celebrate the accomplishments or our alumni and former coaches who made
outstanding contributions to Saint Stephen’s athletics and brought distinction and excellence to the school
and its programs. Criteria for induction and nomination forms can be found at: www.saintstephens.org (under
the Alumni tab)
