At the Pipe Shop on Aug. 27, 19 shipbuilders from across the shipyard, from the
material orderer to the deliverer of the completed product, were recognized by
Newport News Shipbuilding leadership for their partnership in working together
to deliver the 70,000th pipe detail (out of 83,000 total) for Gerald R. Ford (CVN
78) well under budget. Vice President of Supply Chain Management Brian
Fields congratulated the shipyard team and said, “There is clearly a strong
partnership and respect among the organizations in the pipe value stream. Clear
communications by all shipyard parties have led to this great success.”
James Rodgers (X42), pipe bender responsible for bending the 70,000th
pipe detail, said, “We enjoy great support from our material, engineering, and
planning teams. We are all committed to the same goal of supporting our ship
construction teams with high quality pipe details and assemblies.”

NNS Interns Celebrate
Summer at the Shipyard
On Aug. 8, SHIPs Network invited
Newport News Shipbuilding’s
(NNS) summer interns to attend the
SHIPs third quarter luncheon with
Vice President of Engineering and
Design Jennifer Boykin. During
the luncheon, Boykin gave a brief
summary of her career history and
told the interns to consider all the
opportunities that come their way.
“NNS hosted more than 168 interns
this summer,” said Marti Kuhns,
Human Resources manager. “The

internship program serves two purposes; it enables students to gain practical
experience in their field of study and allows the company to develop a pipeline
of talent for future hiring.
M53’s Calibration Team Recognized
The M53 Calibration team was recognized on Aug. 17 by Machine Shop
leadership for their teamwork in reducing the list of daily requests issued by the
X36 tool room. At the luncheon, Quality Manager John Parker congratulated
the team on a job well done. “On Aug. 8, the daily tool request list contained no
items,” he said. “This list has gone from as many as five pages down to the norm
of half a page. Today, we celebrate no listings.”
Superintendent Joey Perry also spoke at the luncheon, “We attribute this feat
to not only the talents of the seasoned calibrators being able to complete the
requests, but also to the hours spent training and qualifying the new calibrators
who joined the team earlier this summer.”
Tool Room Supervisor Ellen Council-Powell also congratulated the team. “This
team has done an amazing job, I don’t think I’ve seen the tool list at zero in the
five years I’ve been the tool supervisor. Congratulations are due all around!”

security officer requests to look more
professional,” said Derek Jenkins,
director of Security. “Being and
looking professional has been in our
forefront for many years through our
uniform appearance, our dedication
to protecting this facility and our
response to protect and assist our
employees, customers, vendors
and contractors; as well as protect
company and government assets.
This change is just one more effort
toward enhancing our appearance and
supporting our officer’s needs.”

opening email and be aware of:
• Messages with “EXT” in the
subject line mean the email was
sent from somone outside of NNS.
• Being blind copied on emails
without receiving employees’
name in the “to” or “cc” line.
• Receiving email from an unknown
source that includes a link.

Hampton Bay Days is Sept. 7-9
Newport News Shipbuilding is a sponsor of
the 30th annual Hampton Bay Days festival
Sept. 7-9. The event will be held in downtown
Hampton and will feature a variety of music,
food, merchandise and craft vendors, and a 25-minute fireworks show. The
festival will also have 13 interactive vendors demonstrating environmentalism,
conservatism, clean water, and the Chesapeake Bay. For more info about this

X73 and E82 will host the 2012 Reactor Services Golf Classic at
Cypress Creek Golf Course in Smithfield. Registration begins
at 11:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. Cost is $75 per
golfer and is open to the first 36 teams (144 players). Entry fee
includes green fee, cart, unlimited range balls, post tournament
dinner and goodie bag. Registration deadline is Sept. 7. For more

ISO Audits Scheduled for Sept. 10 - 14
Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) will undergo a recertification audit of its Environmental Management System (EMS)
and a surveillance audit of its Quality Management System Sept. 10-14. This year’s surveillance audit will continue as an
“integrated” approach in evaluating key areas of these two management systems. This means that personnel involved with
discussions with the auditors will likely be questioned on both quality and environmental aspects of their work. Details on
each follow.
Environmental Management System (EMS)
Shipbuilding Quality Evaluations (ABS-QE) will conduct the recertification audit of
the NNS Environmental Management System (EMS). All parts of the ISO standard will
be audited, and individuals responsible for those areas have been notified.
Employees may be stopped by auditors and interviewed about general awareness of
the company’s environmental policy or how their job could affect the environment.
Employees can refer to their green ISO 14001 badge cards or the
O27 Environmental, Health and Safety Yardnet website as a reminder of the shipyard’s
environmental policy.
NNS is looking forward to another successful audit to maintain the shipyard’s ISO
14001 certification for the Environmental Management System. NNS was originally
awarded in 2003 and was renewed in 2006 and in 2009. For more information, contact

Quality Management System Audit
Auditors will also conduct an audit of the NNS Quality Management System
Sept. 10-14.
The audit team will review work documents associated with many of the areas of the
shipyard, including records for equipment calibration, training, production control,
product testing, internal audits, and corrective and preventive actions.
Auditors may also request to randomly interview employees in both nuclear and nonnuclear work areas about work procedures to evaluate their work practices, overall
awareness of NNS’ quality management policies and the knowledge of the impact their
work has. Employees should answer questions about how they normally accomplish
their work.
During the last audit, several people and departments were asked about their work processes. Managers, general
foremen and supervisors should emphasize to employees the importance of having knowledge of their work procedures
and working to authorized procedures and drawings.
A successful audit will maintain NNS’ ISO 9001 certificate for the Quality Management System. NNS was first
certified to ISO 9001 in 1993 and has renewed the certification every three years since. For more information, contact
