Did you know that more than 62,000 healthy residents of the Washington, D.C. area
carry a DNA mutation that could potentially cause a mitochondrial disease in them or
their offspring? Mitochondrial disease is a devastating and often fatal disease. It affects
both children and adults. Symptoms and severity of the disease vary. In some cases,
children will not live to see their teenage years. Adults will see their once - active lifestyle reach debilitation. There are no effective treatments for mitochondrial diseases.
Getting an accurate diagnosis could take years and there is no cure. Mitochondrial disorders are at the core of many well—known diseases and chronic illnesses such as, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and autism spectrum disorder.
About the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation
The United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation was founded in 1996 through a merger of
several smaller foundations, established by those who lost loved ones to the disease. Starting as a volunteer organization based in the basement of a home, the UMDF
has grown into a nationally recognized organization.
The UMDF is represented by countless volunteers who operate more than 60 local chapters, groups and ambassador programs, and offers support to all sufferers of mitochondrial disorders regardless of diagnosis, suspected or confirmed.
UMDF Mission
To promote research and education for the diagnosis, treatment and cure of mitochondrial
disorders and to provide support to affected individuals and families.
UMDF Research
Since 1996, the UMDF has provided more than $6 million in grants to support research
that may lead to less invasive diagnoses, better treatments, and ultimately a cure.

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the DC/VA/Baltimore Chapter of the United Mitochondrial Disease
Foundation we would like to welcome you to “Fall into a Cure” our chapter’s inaugural fundraising event.
Your support and participation at this event will help to spread awareness about mitochondrial disease
and raise critically needed dollars to support medical research to find a cure for this devastating and often
fatal disease.
This event would not have been made possible without the generous support from our local businesses
and through support received from national organizations and franchises. We are grateful to each of them
for stepping up to the plate to provide financial support, and donations of goods and services. Please
thank them by continuing to support them through your patronage.
We would also like to thank Melinda O’Toole, Donna Nameth, and Kylie Dunmire from the national headquarters of the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation. We appreciate the resources and support they
have provided to help us plan and manage this event. Special thanks go out to the Junior League of Washington, for providing us with a cadre of talented and helpful young women who have volunteered their
time to serve their community. We are extremely grateful to Mr. and Mrs. John A Gilbert Jr., for sponsoring our event at this beautiful club. We appreciate the help from ALL our girlfriends who have pitched in
to help and set up. Last but not least thanks to our sons, Bryan, Cole, Clay, Jake, and Patrick for helping
their mothers with a variety of auction related duties and for putting up with us for the last three months.

Silent Auction Rules
1. To bid, attendees should clearly print the Bid ID as indicated in their registration
packet. Numbers and names that are not legible will not be recognized when determining bid winners.
2. All items in the silent auction have bid sheets and have been assigned an item number. Enter your bidder number and the amount of the bid on the sheet.
3. Each new bid must be entered on the next blank line available on the bid sheet.
4. The initial bid must be at least the minimum bid amount or higher. Each increase
bid must equal or exceed the minimum raise shown on the sheet.
5. Silent auction bids which do not meet the minimum raise will be disqualified.
6. Scratching off bids is not allowed. Once a bid has been properly entered on a bid
sheet, it is valid and binding.
7. Silent auction bids which do not meet the minimum raise will be disqualified.
8. Guaranteed Winner: If you are certain that you want an item and don’t want to bid
further, take advantage of the “guaranteed winner” slot on the bid sheet. Pay the
listed guaranteed price and the item is yours. No bidding is recognized after a guaranteed bid is made.
9. The Winner is either the person making the guaranteed bid or the last bidder listed
who used the correct bid increment and whose name/bid number is legible. No additional bids can be placed once a section has been closed.
10. Attendees must check-out, pay and collect their winnings before leaving. Check-out
is not available until 10:15 p.m. If you cannot stay you must make arrangements with
another attendee to pay and to take home the items you have won.
11. A bid is an obligation to pay if you win. All sales are final.
12. Services are good for one year unless specified.
13. Hotel and restaurant certificates generally do not cover taxes and gratuities. Many do
not include alcoholic beverages. Please check terms on the certificate.
