2016-2017 Secondary Open Enrollment
Open enrollment is available for junior high and high school students residing within the Sylvania
Schools boundary, November 2 – December 16, 2015. Open enrollment for 2016-2017 is limited by
the building capacity and is handled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Applications must be done in
person through the Student Services Department at Bradley J Rieger Administration Building,
4747 N. Holland Sylvania Road, Monday – Friday between the hours of 7:30 am – 4:00 pm.
Cougar of the Week: Andrew Dunkley
World Language teacher, Mr. Lucas Hoffman, has chosen
sophomore Andrew Dunkley as the next Cougar of the Week. Mr.
Hoffman says that “I nominated Andrew Dunkley for Cougar of the
Week because he is a kind and friendly student that represents the
Southview family. He is a bright student and fun to have in class.”
Andrew is the son of Rudolth & Dareth Hanniford. In his spare
time, Andrew enjoys sleeping and hanging out with friends. His
favorite book of all time is To Kill a Mockingbird. He would like to
go to college and study business management. If he could meet
anyone in the world it would be Kanye West because he is his favorite rapper. Keep up the great work Andrew!

Bus transportation to and from school is available, but if a student is coming to school late or leaving early

incorporates weighted grades into calculations, and tracks course requirements for BOTH Division I
and Division II. Your child’s core course information is saved for the duration of his/her high school
career. The athletic department is proud to make this software available to you free of charge. We
believe it is a very useful academic tool for you and your student-athlete.

COUGAR SPOTLIGHT
Congratulations to the Lady Cougars’ Basketball team, who traveled to Maumee High School
last Tuesday and came home with their first victory of the season in impressive fashion. Contributions came from the entire team, with Erin Morrissey dropping in a game-high 22 points and
great energy on both ends of the floor. Ten points each were chipped in by Clarke Sanders and
Keely Pohl. Dani Peterson also played a key role with excellent ball handling and unselfish
passing.
Senior, Zachary Poczekaj, was honored as the Chamber
of Commerce student of the month. He is pictured with
his parents, Christopher and Renee Poczekaj and
Southview Principal, Dave McMurray.
The Sylvania Syborg team competed in Fargo, ND over the
weekend. They had a great time and learned a lot about
robots. They did come home with the Blood, Sweat and Duct
Tape Trophy for never giving up during the competition.
Congratulations!

COUGAR SPOTLIGHT
Congratulations to the boys’ and girls’ swim and dive teams for a fantastic season opener
against Napoleon. The boys beat Napoleon with a score of 118 to 65. Congrats to the following first place finishers: Maggie Hsieh, Zane Kruszynski, Noah Curran, Sam Curran,
RJ Kondalski, and Kotone Pax.
Congratulations to Interact Volunteers of the Month – for October: Max Westjohn and
Bashaier Ambon; and for November: Hudson Chesser and Matthew Rothschild. Please
report to Mrs. Wetmore for your gift card. Interact members are reminded to volunteer and turn
in your hours. Also, Jefferson Award Applications are due January 8th.
Mr. McMurray enjoyed last week’s Rotary luncheon with our
CougaReview Head Writer, Joey Ball and Lead Choreographer,
Cassie Potter. Unfortunately, Gillian Martin the Director of
CougaReview was not able to attend.
Sylvania High Schools have been honored as being named to the Advanced Placement District Honor
Roll. This signifies that our school has increased access to AP course work while simultaneously maintaining or increasing the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher on AP Exams. Reaching
these goals indicates that our district is successfully identifying motivated, academically prepared
students who are likely to benefit from rigorous AP course work. This distinction was given to only 425
districts throughout the United States and Canada. Considering there are 611 school districts in the
state of Ohio and more than 14.000 public school districts in the United States, this is indeed an honor.
Only 25 districts in Ohio were awarded this distinction and Sylvania was one of two districts in NW
Ohio to be recognized. Congratulations to our AP teachers and students on receiving this
distinction for the 3rd year in a row!
The new science computer lab is just about
ready. Students will be able to use the lab
at the beginning of the second semester.
If you plan to take the December 12th ACT, the deadline has passed. You can late register by going to
www.actstudent.org.
Students are assigned to counselors by their last name for all grade levels. The Guidance phone number
is 419-824-8737. Please call with any questions or concerns.

The Northview & Southview Parent Organizations present a
Community Forum on Teenage Stress
Tuesday, January 12, 2016
7:00 PM in the Northview High School Media Center
Facing an unhealthy level of stress is an extremely common problem for High school
students. A community panel of mental health professionals will provide suggestions
and answer questions in an open forum. Some topics to be discussed will be: How
stress affects teenage mood and bodies. Is my child stressed or depressed? What are
warning signs to watch for? When should a parent seek professional assistance to
support their teen's mental health?
If you would like to submit a question to the panel ahead of time, please email
[email protected].
